Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Paranoia/Maximum Security - Double Review: "Back in Business"

Hey everybody, I'm Laura, and I will be filling in for Kimberly for what looks like the remainder of the season. I'm a huge fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine; I've been watching the show live since the beginning of the year, and I binge-watched the rest of the show very quickly before that. I haven't been too impressed with most of the episodes in 3B, but these two episodes blew me away. They felt just like old times, and I must commend the writers for crafting truly wonderful episodes. Now for the reviews.

Paranoia:

I adored this episode with all of my heart from the beginning right to the last second. It was Rosa-centric in all meanings of the word. Rosa and Adrian announced their engagement, the three bachlorette parties were all for her, and in the best scene of the episode, it was focused on her reactions to Adrian needing to leave. I thought Adrian's bachelor party was interesting and when things turned sideways I was on the edge of my seat. All three of the bachlorette parties were great to watch. Boyle definitely had the winning party; smashing stuff is always a winner around Rosa. That's not to say that Gina's paintball party and Amy's quiz with drinks party weren't great too. They all contributed to this episode being fantastic. When Jake had to break the news to Rosa that he's going away for a while my heart truly sank. Andy and Stephanie played this scene so well. And then Rosa got to see Adrian one last time all the while she's in tears and she hugs and kisses him goodbye. This was almost too much for me to handle. I would have liked to see a bit more Holt, but he showed up at the end. Speaking of the ending, it was fantastic too, with the entire squad vowing to never stop looking for the person doing this to Adrian. Rosa was genuinely appreciate of this gesture. Did they rush a little bit too fast with this engagement and wedding? Perhaps. But I think it was true to Rosa's character. She finally found someone who she really connected with, albeit that someone is sometimes unstable. So she wanted to grab it while she could. This episode really fleshed out Rosa's feelings and I loved every minute of it.

Grade: A-

Maximum Security:

I wasn't sure where this episode was going at first, but I slowly enjoyed it more and more. This was a great episode for Amy, and Jake and Amy as a couple. Even though they had quite a hefty argument, they were both eventually able to see each other's point of view and resolve things. Boyle played Shipper on Deck for pretty much the entire episode, which was very funny. I thought the funeral scene was pretty funny as well, which seems like an odd statement, but this has done funerals before and they always keep up the humour. The notion of Holt really getting into these high fives was so great to see. And then it came time for Rosa's eulogy. Wow, it blew me away. She really dug deep and truly spoke from the heart. I'm so proud of her, but at the same time, my heart truly aches for her. Moreover, the whole undercover assignment part of the episode was awesome. Jake bringing up Orange is the New Black was funny, even though I don't watch that show I still laughed at the reference. I especially loved how Holt suggested Rosa at first because "she's terrifying". But in the end, Amy proves that when push comes to shove, she can be a force to be reckoned with if she sets her mind to it. After all, apparently she can be quite the 'psycho' when it comes to Jeopardy. Now I want to see an episode with Jake/Amy and Holt/Kevin competing with the Jeopardy questions. In conclusion, both this episode and the one previous weren't filler episodes. They're a part of what I can assume is the endgame for this season. Adrian is being targeted by Jimmy the Butcher, and he has a mole in the FBI. Amy is trying to get connections with his ex in prison. All the pieces are slowly coming together, and based on what I've seen so far, I will greatly enjoy how this story will wrap up/the remainder of the season.

Grade: B+
