How to Get Away With Murder - Season 2 Finale - Post Mortem Interviews

Is the Wallace murder and who did it a key point in the third season?

We don’t go back to working on the third season until May, but Wes’ childhood and who his father is — that's a major part of his life. So whether it’s something that we answer quickly, like who killed Rebecca (Katie Findlay) in the premiere, or the version where we extend it … I haven’t decided that yet.

Should viewers assume it was Frank avenging Annalise’s baby at this point?

I don’t want to leave anyone with anything — everyone’s going to have different theories and that’s sort of the point for me. I’m happy for more theories because that just means people are engaged and that’s all I want.

Is the hope to explore more of Annalise’s familial relationships next season?

Of course. Her family, whether she wants to believe it or not, is a really important part of her life and there are a lot of unresolved things there — especially after that scene with her father. And there’s always stuff with her mother. We’re at a point in her life where she may reconsider connecting with her family. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m definitely excited about exploring that more.

Oliver hasn’t murdered anyone, but was deleting that Stanford acceptance letter correlated to the fact that he’s hanging out with these people?

Definitely, it’s almost Connor’s worst nightmare — his darkness rubbing off on the angel that is Oliver. Or is that just who Oliver has been all along and he’s just been faking his way through life? I get Oliver. I get wanting to have a more exciting life. These are two guys who are very young and are only just starting to really know each other and know themselves so anything is possible between the two of them.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First and foremost, do you think Frank killed Mahoney?
CHARLIE WEBER: In my perfect version of the show, I believe so. With Frank, he’s already thinking about how he can make this OK. With his skill set, that would fall into that category. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I certainly have my vision and I can see that being something that Frank would do to begin his journey back to Annalise.

Do you think the love between them is gone?
I don’t know. Once two people have been in that situation, nothing goes away completely. There will always be something there. With Frank, he’s so concerned with the Annalise thing that he’s not dealing with the Laurel thing right now. He’s so consumed with what this means with Annalise that it’s his soul purpose.

Do you ultimately think he’s redeemable?
I do. I really do. He’s a complicated guy, but there’s a heart in there. He really does love Annalise. He really does feel he belongs to her, in a lot of ways.

Will Adam Arkin be back for more flashback stories next season?
I would love to have Adam Arkin back. It’s like with Famke [Janssen], they’re such busy, wanted actors that we have to work around their schedule, but I would hope that we do.

You mentioned Laurel’s family yet again in the finale. Are you finally planning to explore that in season 3?
Yes. I feel like it’s very present. The promise of our show is that we won’t dangle things out too long. The likelihood is yes. We’ve raised that question too many times not to answer it sooner than later.

TVLINE | One nagging question people might have: How did Sam let Frank stick around for 10 years? Why didn’t Frank just quit the job? What do you say to people who don’t buy it?
I would say that’s a great question, and I get it, and there are answers that we haven’t shown you yet. What’s their origin story? This clearly wasn’t the first little secret they’ve kept between them, and there’s probably a lot more than that, so I would just say it’s just the start.

TVLINE | Will Charlie Weber be a series regular in Season 3?
Well, I don’t want to say anything because I don’t want to give away anything.

TVLINE | Was Caleb always going to turn out to be the murderer?
Yes, for a while, and then I worried it was too obvious. When we got to this episode, the writers convinced me it was the right way to go. Annalise’s fight with Philip ended so quickly in the last episode, and I loved that we were able to continue it and show that Annalise has been really debating for the last two episodes about what she’s going to do with his information. Does she believe Philip? The minute Annalise found out that Caleb was the rat, she trusted Philip and believed that Caleb was the killer.
