TVLINE | Jane’s other big moment in this episode was kissing Weller. Why was this the right time for that?

They’ve been circling around each other since the pilot. They almost kissed in Episode 5. For me, what’s so heartbreaking about this episode is she finally feels safe. By the end of Episode 9, they’re having a pizza party together. It’s the first time we’re seeing them all laugh and just have fun together. As awful as the David thing is, Patterson goes to Jane at the end and says, “I couldn’t have done this without you guys.” [Jane is] really cementing her role in the team, and finally kissing Weller and feeling good about it. Maybe for the first time since she came out of that bag, she felt like she was on stable ground. The second Oscar shows up, the floor falls out from under her feet. Those things make it emotionally interesting.

TVLINE | Is there a love triangle on the horizon between Jane, Weller and Oscar?

It will complicate things, certainly.

What else should fans look forward to in the back half of the season – anything you can tease?

I just hope that we’ve proven that we’re serious about moving story really quickly. This isn’t a show that’s going to take its time – we’ve got an enormous amount of story to get out, and I think what’s really exciting is, Jane’s a fascinating character but it’s hard to write characters in a show like this that don’t have any secrets. Suddenly Jane has a giant secret and the way that it changes the show is something that we were really nervous about, because it really does change the engine of the show… but it just made it so much more satisfying to write, and so much more fun, and I can’t wait for people to see the second half of the season. It kind of feels like, network television now – and I think it’s great – we basically do two cable seasons a year, so it almost feels like a whole other season, and we’re getting into breaking those last few episodes, and you’re not gonna believe 20, 21, 22 and 23.

How will this video reveal affect Jane when the show returns?

It changes everything for her. That was part of the initial pitch [for the show] way back in the day and it was a moment we all knew was coming. I was excited and nervous about it, because it changes the show in a really fundamental way. But, as we're shooting episode 13 and we're just starting to break episode 17, it really deepens the show in a way that is incredibly exciting. As fascinating a character as Jane Doe was, it's hard to write characters on a show like this that don't really have secrets. The tension that she has obviously she doesn't tell the team first thing in the next episode. So it brings a whole new dynamic to the show that is really invigorating and fun.

Before he died, Carter mentioned Orion. Is that the new focus in the back half or is it on Jane's identity?

Jane's new thing is now that she has a direct line to somebody that knows who she became since she was kidnapped. That's her main goal, as well as Orion and everything. It's hard to talk about without giving stuff away. Daylight is kind of exposed and was part of the reason the tattoos were on her, but not all of the reason. We're a little passed it. It hasn't been exposed to the public yet, which the people who put this on her body would clearly like. But it's less of a concern. It all goes from here.

Did you always have this Russian spy parallel in mind for this episode?

That was always the fun of this one. There are some lines upon rewatching, where Jane is kind of amazed that someone would give up their life and go underground. Of course she's not even aware that she did the exact same thing.

Now that Carter is dead, what does that mean for Zapata’s resignation?
Hopefully she finds out about it before she hands it in.

What’s Zapata’s mindset when she finds out Carter is dead?
It’s relief and terror, because she certainly has a motive if there was foul play involved, which we know there was. It’s not over for them. They don’t get out of it that easy.

Reade got a call in the closing moment of the finale that sounds like it may be from a girlfriend. Are we going to get into Reade’s personal life?
Good catch. Yes, we will. It’s a big part of the next part of the season.

So he does have a girlfriend?
Yeah, he does.
