Switched at Birth - How Does a Girl Like You Get to Be a Girl Like You - Review

Switched at Birth picked up right where we left off last episode, with Daphne and Lily discussing her pregnancy. Lily still hasn’t told Toby but when she finally does, things do not go very well. However, eventually they get together to talk things through and are able to have a civil conversation about everything and come to a tentative decision. I think it’s important to mention that although I think it’s nice that Daphne is there for Lily and Toby, at points during this episode I felt like she way overstepped. She’s allowed to have her own opinion but, at the end of the day, this has nothing to do with Daphne! She’s not the one having the baby, she’s not the one who would be consistently caring for it and supporting it financially - it’s not really her place. If Toby had asked for her opinion then fine, but he told her what they were leaning towards and she basically attacked him for it. I’m not really a Toby fan but I'm shockingly on his side. I would feel the same way no matter what they decided about the baby, it has nothing to do with their decision, it’s the way Daphne is going about voicing her opinion. She handled it horribly and I felt the same way about her interaction with Mingo. He’s trying his best and she’s just coming off terribly, as impatient and intolerant. I’m happy that she has promised to be more patient with him but she should also try it with everyone else because she desperately needs to finally out grow this lack of patience. Mingo learning ASL is very cute, so I hope she keeps her promise about being patient because he’s clearly trying. He did have a weird vibe with Daphne’s interpreter, so hopefully that will be explored in future episodes.

Meanwhile, Bay is taking more steps to move on from her break-up and sexual assault last season. Although she’s trying to outrun her past it seems that she just can’t get away. After she enrolls in a Spanish course at UMKC, she realizes that the students on campus haven’t forgotten about her and even resent her for the changes her assault has brought to the campus. She spends all of her time on campus thinking that her classmates are constantly talking about her and she is becoming increasingly paranoid, so she decides to drop her class and learn spanish elsewhere. However, while it’s true that people are sometimes talking about her, she has also found a few people who she’s inspired and who are standing up for her. She ends up staying in her class and kind of embracing her role as a helper for others who are going through something similar. I’m happy that Bay is finally feeling the support that she deserves and I’m looking forward to seeing her take on this role as an inspiration for others. Travis continued to be a great friend to her in this episode and his friendship with Bay is quickly becoming one of my favorite relationships on this show. Although he really overreacted at the game, he was coming from a good place so I’ll give him a free pass. Plus, after his revelation that he was sexually abused as a child, what Bay is going through is personal for him and he can really relate.

After last week’s revelation that John and Kathryn were having money problems, people are really piling on John this week by asking for a lot of money. I feel bad for him, it must be rough but I saw this coming from a mile away. I knew he would keep everything to himself and try to hide it from everyone, only to have his plan backfire. I don’t really have a whole lot of sympathy for him because of this, how is anyone supposed to know that they can’t write donation checks for $50,000 anymore if he doesn't tell them. I did think it was a little bad of Kathryn to just write that check without even asking John…but it must be nice to casually right a check for $50,000 though. I can’t imagine this going on much longer before people find out and I wonder just how far they’re going to take this story.
