Doctor Who - The Magician's Apprentice - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers

It’s been nine long months since we last saw Capaldi’s Doctor on our screens, but the wait is very nearly over when the show returns with The Magician’s Apprentice on Saturday evening. As you may be aware already, most of the stories this season will be two part episodes, with a cliff-hanger for the audience to chew over for the week between them. This opening instalment is no exception, and if you are anything like me then you will be spending the following week coming up with the various ways that its companion episode, The Witch’s Familiar, will solve the issues raised.

As we saw in the prologue released last week, someone is looking for the Doctor, an old enemy has sent out servants, including the curious Colonel Sarf (Jami Reid-Quarrell), to track him down. Though when you have the whole of time and space to disappear in to, staying several steps ahead of a few lackeys is child’s play.

Remaining hidden from people who know him very well, however, is a different matter altogether, which is fortunate for Clara, as she spots a strange phenomenon whilst in the middle of teaching an English lesson. The sky has been mysteriously frozen and in it, hanging motionless, are all four thousand one hundred and sixty five planes that were airborne when it happened. Cue a visit to UNIT at the Tower of London, who are completely baffled by the incident and have been unable to communicate with the pilots of the effected aeroplanes.

With the return of both Kate and Missy – and to a certain extent, the very obvious non-appearance of Osgood – this does feel like a very natural progression from Death in Heaven for our characters. There is some growth in places of course; Clara’s no-nonsense efficiency sees her getting straight down to business at UNIT, but it’s during her time with Missy where we really get to see how she has developed and moved on since losing Danny as the end of last season. Jenna and Michelle are the highlight of the episode for me; they bounce off each other exceptionally well as they are forced into an uneasy alliance.

The Doctor too has changed somewhat since we last saw him. He’s settled into both his TARDIS – which has had a small make over that we will see later in the season - and his role. We get to see his more humorous side, though that’s not to say it’s all fun games in this episode, and we also see him do something he hated last season.

The Magician’s Apprentice airs on Saturday 19th September at 7.40pm on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD in the UK, and at 9pm on BBC America. Below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.

“How’s your boyfriend? Still tremendously dead I expect.”

“He never uses it. I doubt he even remembers it exists.”

“They’re telling me you’re needed. They were going to put me through to the Prime Minister.”

“We've known each other a long time, and she's one of my own people”

“Pardon my sci-fi, but this is beyond any human technology.”

“You will come, you will stay.”

“Make me believe.”

“I’ve no idea. He’s not our concern, and he’s certainly not your employers.”

“Why show somebody what you can do, why not just do it?”

“Doctor, what have you done?”
