Emmy and Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn has landed a whopper of a guest role on Season 3 of Mom — where she’ll play Shirley, the woman who gave birth to Allison Janney’s Bonnie, TVLine has learned.

“She plays Bonnie’s biological mother,” Janney revealed to TVLine Monday night at CBS’ TCA bash, adding that the character’s reappearance — Shirley abandoned her daughter at age four, and hasn’t laid eyes on her since — “upends” Bonnie’s relationship with her own offspring Christy (Anna Faris).

Burstyn is slated to appear in Episode 3, airing Thursday, November 19, at 9/8c.

In the same installment, June Squibb will guest-star as Dottie, Christy’s idea of a perfect grandmother. Both Burstyn and Squibb are, at present, only slated for one episode each.

  • 04:15 - Code Black - Gail O’Grady to Guest & Cress Williams to Recur
“Code Black” is admitting two more cast members into the hospital.

Cress Williams will appear in the freshman medical drama in a recurring role, while Gail O’Grady will star in one episode with the possibility of her role expanding, series creator Michael Seitzman tells Variety.

Williams will play Marcia Gay Harden’s potential love interest, Seitzman alludes, adding that he and the creative team met the “Hart of Dixie” actor early in the pilot casting process, but didn’t find the right role for him at the time so they created this part.

As for O’Grady, the “NYPD” alum plays the mother to a drunk driver in a tragic situation. “Honestly, it was probably the most blistering performance I have seen in years, as the mother of two sons,” Seitzman says.

Though she’s only filmed one episode, O’Grady could return.
