Switched At Birth - To Repel Ghosts - Advance Preview: “Emotional Healing”

When we last saw Bay and Daphne their lives were becoming increasingly complicated. Daphne was dealing with her possible relationship with Mingo and Bay was still trying to deal with the painful repercussions of her rape. Season 4 returns on Monday, August 24th with the characters dealing with the emotional fallout of the events of the first half of the season. Expect lots of tears and a large number of surprises. Here is a little peak into what you can expect from each of the characters.

Bay (Vanessa Marano) is still dealing with the fallout of her rape and the falling apart of her relationship with Emmett (Sean Berdy). When we find Bay at the start of this episode she is a wreck as her life is in emotional turmoil. Throughout the episode she goes on a journey of self discovery in a unique way that only this show could pull off. She goes to Melody (Marlee Matlin) for some advice as she struggles to understand where things went wrong in her relationship with Emmet. Her life is an emotional mess right now, but Bay is a strong woman and with the help of her sister and her family I’m hoping she can find a healthy way to deal with the trauma she’s been through. Vanessa is called upon to take up an interesting dual position this week and she embraces the story and delivers a flawless performance.

Daphne (Katie Leclerc) has been faithfully standing at Bay’s side since the rape and she holds firm to that loyalty in this episode. Bay is her sister and she will protect her sister from anyone aiming to cause her further pain, no matter who it is. It is a good thing that Daphne is getting her life together because a lot of people are counting on her as the season resumes. Lily (Rachel Shenton) will entrust a massive secret to Daphne which sets up a story that is poised to tackle a big social topic. This show has a history of tackling socially prevalent topics with thoughtful storytelling and I expect this story to receive the same treatment. In the midst of all of this she is also dealing with issues revolving around her own relationship with Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch). One thing is for sure, Daphne is going to be busy for the rest of the season. Katie, as always, delivers an emotionally spot on performance as Daphne winds her way through the emotionally charged events in this episode.

Emmett plays a big part in Bay’s journey throughout this episode, but not necessarily in the way fans are expecting. At least one of his other relationships is on the line as the fallout of Bay’s rape continues to ripple throughout the group.

Toby (Lucas Grabeel) is dealing with his breakup with Lily by avoiding her. That doesn’t sit well with Daphne who, as mentioned above, is caught in the middle of several messy relationship issues. Given the story they’ve set him up for he is going to need his family more than ever.

John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) receive some information that has the potential to cause them a lot of pain. If this goes wrong the life they know may forever be altered.

Regina (Constance Marie) finds out some shocking news about Eric (Terrell Tilford) and she has some big decisions to make. The stakes are big and the decision weighs heavy on her. Look for a great scene between Regina and Kathryn where the latter provides some truly sound advice. When you watch the episode, especially this particular storyline, just remember that not all is as it seems.

This episode is a great way to launch the back half of the season. Some storylines see resolution and many new storylines are setup as the season seems poised to keep the heavy emotions flowing strong. Buckle up and be prepared for an emotion packed return to the world of Switched At Birth.

Be sure to tune in to ABC Family on Monday at 8/7c.

Hit the comments and let me know what you are hoping will happen as the show returns to finish up its fourth season.
