Television Gets The Silver Screen Treatment In Toronto International Film Festival’s New Primetime Programme

International lineup features shows from the minds of Baltasar Kormákur, Jason Reitman, Morgan Neville, Fabrice Gobert, Lucía Puenzo and Tim Kring

TORONTO — August 13, 2015 – Six high-quality television programs from around the globe comprise the inaugural lineup for Primetime, a new programme launching at the 40th Toronto International Film Festival®. The section presents the best in international television on the big screen, channeling the powerful, small-screen serial storytelling coming from broadcasters, streaming services and independent filmmakers. The lineup features programs from France, Iceland, Argentina and the United States, created by directors Baltasar Kormákur, Jason Reitman, Morgan Neville, Fabrice Gobert, Lucía Puenzo and Nicolás Puenzo, and creator/executive producer Tim Kring.

“The growing convergence and artistic equality between television and cinema has ushered in a new era of high-quality, small-screen programming,” said Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF. “Primetime aims to spotlight the cross-pollination of these two moving image cultures, showcasing the bold and impressive work that’s being produced on an international scale.”

“Television has entered an artistic renaissance; we’re seeing, among other things, many filmmakers experimenting with that medium to broaden their forms of storytelling,” said Festival Programmer Michael Lerman. “The strongest storytellers are masters of change, and TV offers a narrative flexibility, a platform and a luxury for filmmakers to explore ways of telling longer stories that delve deeper into their characters.”

The programme includes Q&A sessions with show creators following the screenings. The Festival’s Industry Conference will also incorporate leading creative producers and thinkers from the world of long-form and episodic storytelling.

MICHAEL SCHUR RETURNS TO NBC WITH SERIES ORDER FOR UNTITLED COMEDY

Emmy Award-Winning “Parks and Recreation” Executive Producer Brings New Comedy to Network

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Aug. 13, 2015 — NBC has given a 13-episode series commitment order to an untitled comedy from “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” executive producer Michael Schur, one of the most respected and talented writer-showrunners in television today.

“For seven seasons, Mike Schur brought us the wonderful citizens of Pawnee, and we can’t wait to see the new group of indelible characters that he’ll now introduce,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “He came in recently and pitched the entire first season, and we loved it so much we ordered it to production. Mike prefers to keep details under wraps while he meets actors and actresses, but I can tell you that the man who brought Amy Poehler to primetime is bringing us another funny, strong and particularly complicated female character — yes, the lead is a woman — in a comedy like nothing seen before, about a woman wrestling with what it means to be good. We’re very excited about this show!”

Two-time Emmy Award winner Schur has one of the most fertile minds in comedy. His NBC series “Parks and Recreation,” which wrapped in February and currently Emmy nominated for best comedy series, remains one of the best-reviewed comedies in the history of television.

Schur is currently executive producer of the Universal Television-produced series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which won a Golden Globe for outstanding comedy series in its first year of eligibility. He is also an executive producer on the Netflix comedy “Master of None,” produced by Universal Television and starring Aziz Ansari. Schur has written and produced for other seminal series, including “The Office” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Emmy-Winning Writer Tracey Wigfield to Create Pilot About Millennial Woman Whose Mother Invades Her Workplace

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Aug. 13, 2015 — Emmy Award winners and producing partners Tina Fey and Robert Carlock are returning to NBC with a pilot production order for an untitled comedy written by Emmy winner Tracey Wigfield.

The Fey-Carlock project centers on a mother-daughter relationship that is challenged when an overly involved New Jersey mom gets an internship at her daughter’s workplace, a cable news network.

“Tina and Robert are two of the pre-eminent voices in comedy, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that they’re bringing their next project to NBC,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “We also adore Tracey, who has written some brilliant episodes of both ‘30 Rock’ and ‘The Mindy Project.’ With this super-talented trio at the helm, we’re eagerly looking forward to their next great show.”

Fey and Carlock have a rich history at NBC. They were writers and producers on “30 Rock,” which ran for seven seasons and won the Emmy three times as best comedy series. Fey also won two Emmys as a writer on “30 Rock” and one as a member of the writing staff for “Saturday Night Live.”

Their critically applauded current series on Netflix, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” was nominated for seven Emmys, including outstanding comedy series, in its first year of eligibility.
