Latest Movie News (What is this?)

  • 24th November 2015 - Film Removed from Upcoming Release Schedule
Despite Fox's initial insistence that the Fantastic Four sequel was moving forward despite the box office failure of the first film, Fox has now officially removed the Fantastic Four sequel from their release schedule.

Fantastic Four 2 was originally scheduled for a June 9, 2017 release date, even before the first film hit theaters. With virtually all superhero movies performing well at the box office recently, Fox probably felt confident at the time that Fantastic Four would follow suit. However, Fantastic Four wound up being the rare superhero movie flop. Fantastic Four only grossed $56 million domestically and $167 million worldwide on a production budget of $120 million.

It's unclear if Fox removing Fantastic Four 2 from their schedule means the film is indefinitely canceled or if it will be rescheduled for a later date to allow more time for Fox to plan a strategy for what comes next.

  • 9th August 2015 - Fox Still Committed to Fantastic Four Brand
"While we're disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe," said Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson, declining to comment specifically on Fantastic Four 2.

  • 12th March 2015 - Film Delayed
20th Century Fox has made a slight release date change for Fantastic Four 2, and in and of itself it seems like a fairly benign move, but there’s a reason for the shift—Star Wars. Earlier today, Disney announced that the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: Episode VIII will arrive in theaters on May 26, 2017, returning that franchise to its May haven following The Force Awakens’ unprecedented December release. Fox had originally scheduled the Fantastic Four sequel to drop on June 2nd, but the film will now open in theaters on June 9, 2017 according to The Projection List. Given that Star Wars is now opening the week before June 2nd, it’s probably smart to get a bit of breathing room between the two franchises.
