The Whispers - What Lies Beneath - Review

One of the things that I love about this show is that it consistently picks up the story not too far from where they left us. Episode 5 - “What Lies Beneath” continues that trend. Claire and Henry were bought into isolation by the hazmat team to ensure that they were hadn’t picked up any radiation from the nuclear plant’s meltdown. They are both in the clear, but how can that be? That is one of the lingering questions in this episode.

Sean’s back in custody and Wes has a lot of questions for him. Unfortunately, Sean doesn’t remember anything. Wes has a hard time believing him, feeling it is too convenient. I loved this scene. It was very moving to watch Sean talk about his memory being so poor that his shadow would know more than he does. He was even able to convince Wes that he didn’t know what was happening or who Drill was. The only thing that Sean does know is that it isn’t over. This obviously scares Wes and he rushes home to tell Lena that he wants her and Minx to pack up to stay with her parents. Lena argues with him, using her powers of persuasion to change his mind. I have to admit I would have preferred if Lena left and stayed with her parents. So far in the show I don’t find her to be very interesting and I don’t sympathize with her character at all. Every show has a character like that and she fills that roles for me, at least so far.

Claire gets removed from the cases officially, but will she actually stop trying to get answers? My bet was no! She goes to Wes, asking him to allow her to see Sean. In this scene she informs Wes that she doesn’t believe that they are dealing with a “who”, but rather a “what”. Though you can tell Wes isn’t sure what to believe he does allow Claire to talk to Sean. It was kind of heartbreaking to see Sean and Claire talk in the interrogation room, with Claire trying her best to jog Sean’s memory. She showed pictures of their lives together, and their son and he still didn’t remember. It must have been hard on Wes to stand there and watch them together as he left the room once Sean asked if they were happy. She responds cleverly by saying they were married.

During the Claire and Sean interview Wes gets news that Sean’s lie detector test came back with some unusual results. It looks like a malfunction in the readings but to Wes, he saw something else. He notices the pattern on the results form the shape of the tree where Sean’s plane crashed. This leads Wes to return to the crash site as he believes that what’s underneath it is important.

Meanwhile, Lena has been dealing with some trust issues with Minx. She believes Minx is still talking to Drill and this leaves her feeling unsafe. She even gets a gun out of their safe. I mentioned this in my last review, and I’ll mention it again. I’m a little creeped out by Minx. That little girl makes me believe that she is up to no good. She’s so mischievous that I wouldn’t be able to trust her either if I were her parent.

Sean explains his tattoos to Claire. He has been tattooing symbols of his visions and believes them to be a road map to destruction, because each of them involve tragic events. Sean then shows her a tattoo for something that he hasn’t been able to solve. She brings this news to her old partner, Jessup. She informs him that she believes that the reactor was just the beginning and that there is more to come.

Claire always seems to be a few steps ahead of the FBI. I don’t know why they would take her off the case! She was cleaning her house when she realized that the unsolved tattoo Sean has was the jersey number of a little boy. Claire goes to this boy, only to discover that his mom is Wes’s secretary. Now, some of you may have seen that coming. I, however, was a little suspicious of there being an underlining connection but I do have to say that I love how everything in this show is interconnected. The writers are doing a great job of making all these puzzle pieces fit together. What was Drill’s plan here? Apparently it was to get Wes to overhear a conversation between mother and son that would make Wes realize that he had to go back to the crash site to get more answers. That became apparent when Claire realized whose son he was and that Wes had gone back to the crash. This immediately had Claire worried for Wes’s safety, but she was unable to get a hold of him to warn him at the end of the episode. Hopefully nothing bad happens to Wes as he’s my favourite character in the show.

It’s great to see all the connections between the characters and how every small thing seems to be part of Drill’s big plan. This show just keeps reeling me in, and I’m hooked! What about you, are you hooked? And do you think anything bad will happen to Wes?
