Dark Matter - Episode 4 - Advance Preview: “Double Take”

3 Jul 2015

Last week left us with a hell of a cliffhanger and a lot of questions. Speculation has covered about every possible scenario, but the route Dark Matter takes is uniquely its own. Every episode I try to find something negative to say, but so far all I’ve come across is that the week long wait between episodes is painful. So, to help ease the pain of my fellow Dark Matter fans let me give you a little character preview so you know what to expect from our favorite amnesiac space crew.

The show, since the very beginning, has very skillfully tapped into character and actor chemistry when pairing them up for stories. This episode builds on two previously setup pairings for a couple of eye opening adventures. To properly preview this episode I’ll address the paired characters together instead of individually, because the pairings bond theses characters so tightly that I can’t address one without the other.

One and Three find themselves reluctantly paired together to try and find a buyer for the weapons left over from the mining mission. How they end up agreeing to be paired together is a well orchestrated moment that shows why Two is the one in charge. These two spend this episode bound in very close quarters as they try to work through the situation One gets them into. Since the promo gave this away, I can say that their encounter with Jace proves very informative and causes a drastic change in One and Three’s contentious friendship. I can also confirm that the promos and sneak peeks only tell a very small part of this story. Pairing Anthony and Marc together for this story was genius given how skilled they are at bouncing the sarcasm off of each other with ease.

Two and Five find themselves on a fun girl’s day out. It turns out they both share a skill that leads them to an unlikely place. They work together so effortlessly that I get the impression this is not the first time these two have partaken in this activity together. This outing goes a long way to showing the bond these two must have shared before the memory wipe. By the end of this story their relationship will suffer a drastic setback as one of them reveals a dark side that terrifies the other. Melissa and Jodelle have such an ease when they work together that it is exceptionally easy to believe their characters have some kind of sisterly relationship in their pasts. With that said, look for Two to have at least one moment that will come across as more maternal than sisterly. I look forward to one day finding out more about who all these characters are, but I really can’t wait to see how Five found her way into this ragtag team. Melissa gets a great opportunity to show off her fighting skills and it is a fantastic sequence.

Four is a bit of a loner this week. We learn some very interesting things about him throughout the episode. He doesn’t have a big presence this week, but his screen time was very wisely used to propel his character forward.

Six takes the opportunity presented by the space station and he gets his arm checked out. It’s a fun little side adventure for him and things don’t go quite according to plan. Not everything is as it seems in the world of Dark Matter.

The Android gets a little bit of a rest this week after her adventure from last week. She is left in custody of the ship while the others partake on their adventures. We do get to see her in a few pivotal scenes, including a curious encounter with a member of the crew.

This episode focuses primarily on the two pairings mentioned above, but the others do have their moments to shine. The end doesn’t have any big game changing moments like last week’s episode did, but by the end of this episode we may finally have an answer as to who the original owner is of the memory Five conveyed to Two in the premiere. This episode sets up new dynamics and fundamentally changes others.

You may have noticed that this preview is slightly shorter than most of my past ones. That is because Lindsey will not be back in time to work up a review for this episode, so she has asked me to fill in for her one more time, which means I tried to save my best material for that. After you enjoy this adventurous episode on Friday night at 10pm on SyFy be sure to return to SpoilerTV for my detailed review of this episode. I will try to have it up about an hour after the East Coast airing, so we can all discuss the information and relationship changes this episode presents.

Want a chance to earn an extra spoiler, or two, about your favorite character? Accurately guess who says the five quotes below and you can request a bonus spoiler. And because I’m so generous, I’m giving two chances to win spoilers, if you can also correctly guess who the quotes are being said to you too can get a spoiler about a character of your choice.

-“Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.”
-”Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw. Now go.”
-“Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.”
-“So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.”
-“Alright, we’ll see you guys back on the ship. Let’s go sidekick.”

Hit the comments below and leave your thoughts about this upcoming episode. Are you excited to watch the crew tackle the challenges this space station presents them?

  1. Anyone want to take a shot at the quotes above for some extra fun spoilers?

  2. Thanks for the preview :) I'm looking forward to seeing Two and Five together because I've loved the scenes they've had together so far. Of course after that cliffhanger I also can't wait to see what happens with Jace, One and Three! I'm a little disappointed Four isn't in the episode much since he and Five are my favourites so far but at least he he still has scenes.

Here's my guess at who's says the quotes:

-“Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.” - Android
-”Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw. Now go.” - Two
-“Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.” Three
-“So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.” - Three
-“Alright, we’ll see you guys back on the ship. Let’s go sidekick.” - One

    ReplyDelete
  3. Two and Five are a favorite pairing of mine and they do not disappoint here. Four may not be in this much, but what he has is really important.

You got 2 of the 5 quotes right. Take another go at them. It's a fun way to pass the time before the next episode.

  4. I'll give it a shot.

Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.” - Android to Five
-”Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw. Now go.” - Three to One
-“Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.” Six to Android
-“So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.” - Two to Six
-“Alright, we’ll see you guys back on the ship. Let’s go sidekick.” - One to Three

    ReplyDelete
  5. Okay i'm throwing my hat in the ring, quote 1: Three to One, quote 2: Three, quote 3: One to Three, quote 4: Six to Two, quote 5: Three referring to One. Probably got them all wrong, how are One and Two after their kiss? The sneak peek showed them a little awkward toward each other but is there more? The sneak peek kind of debunked the theory that the crew are clones, not that there ARE clones, just that the CREW aren't clones. If it's a bad secret does that mean that creepy Five is back? Would you call it a permanent broken relationship between Five and Two or can it be fixed?

    ReplyDelete
  6. On one of them got the speaker right, but not whom was spoken to. You got the right characters involved in two others, but reversed the order. Keep trying because you're on the right track.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You got 3 of the 5 completely right including who was spoken to. Give it another try because you are so close.

Things between One and Two are awkward, but that's not really a spoiler since we all expected that. While one of them doesn't seem to put much thought into it the other one is still thinking about it.

Outside of what that sneak peek shows the topic of clones doesn't really come up again, so you're guess is as good as mine. I'm still half expecting to meet some other versions of our crew one day, but that is me just speculating.

Two and Five definitely have some things to work through after this episode. I can't reveal who taps into their dark side, but it is a pretty epic moment. They are stuck on a ship together, so they'll have to deal with this eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I got CLOSE?! Whoa i never get close, cool, i'll keep trying.

  9. This is so stressful Lol:

Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.” - Android to Two
-”Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw. Now go.” - Two to Five
-“Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.” One to Three
-“So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.” - Six to Two
-“Alright, we’ll see you guys back on the ship. Let’s go sidekick.” - Three to One

    ReplyDelete
  10. You got all the speakers right and only missed one spoken to. You get one of the two spoilers, so pick your character. And take another guess at the spoken too category, because you're only one off. You could earn a second spoiler.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That's so awesome thanks. Before I pick the first spoiler I want and try and get that last character. How about this:

Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.” - Android to Six

    ReplyDelete
  12. You changed one that was right and left the wrong speaker intact on the other. You're so close you have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This is so stressful to watch in real time. Come on Vixx, win us some spoilers!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lol yeah this is going to kill me.

Given the circumstances perhaps we should consider leaving them behind.” - Android to Two
-”Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw. Now go.” - Two to Six
-“Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.” One to Three
-“So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.” - Six to Two
-“Alright, we’ll see you guys back on the ship. Let’s go sidekick.” - Three to One

  15. You are now the proud owner of not one, but two spoilers for a character or characters of your choosing. You're very good at this game!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thank you so much! I am going to go pass out now from all the stress. But before I do can I get spoilers on the Android and Two please. Thanks again for the really fun game! *Passes Out*

  17. The Android uses some unique techniques in order to secure the ship permission to dock at the space station. Also, as the above quote indicates, she's also not afraid to leave people behind if it means protecting the majority. Bonus cryptic spoiler for not giving up: The Android is extremely observant, but maybe not all that deductive.

Two tasks her crew with trying to help secure them money, but her own efforts leave her and Five in a tough spot. Turns out it is possible for Two to be to good at something. Which one of them will tap into their dark side when provoked? It's a scene worth waiting for.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well Five is already creepy so i'll say her LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks again Aimee, really appreciate the spoilers and the bonus cryptic one Lol. Can't wait to see the episode and your review this week.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I guess no one else can have an extra spoiler huh?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I really though the quote was Three because it sounded so like him, and i thought the second quote was Three again because the quote sounds mean and Two's not really mean.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This episode had a lot of great quotes. I had a list of about ten I cut down to five. I think I'll post another set of quotes tomorrow evening after work and give away another spoiler. So watch this thread tomorrow night for another chance.

Actually the second quote isn't said in a mean way. Sarcastic, yes, but not mean. Everyone got a little extra sarcastic this week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hard to say. Will be interesting to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Awesome, and oh ok yeah i could see Two be sarcastic.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I guess Five shows a dark side. In the last episode Two said to Six that Five did something right or something wrong to be on the ship. I guess we will get a piece of answer about this "right or wrong".

    ReplyDelete
  26. As promised, here is round two of guess the quotes. Same rules apply, if you guess all the speakers right you get to pick one character to get a spoiler about. If you, or someone else, guesses who all the quotes are being spoken to you can pick a character for a spoiler. If you guess both sides of the quote right you have the opportunity for 2 sets of spoilers. These are a tad trickier then the first batch, so get in tune with the Dark Matter characters and have fun!

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.”

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.”

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.”

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
    setting off any alarm bells.”

Who wants to be the gallant hero that wins everyone more spoilers to do them over until tomorrow night?

    ReplyDelete
  27. These seem really tough, but I'll give it a whirl:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.”- Two to One.

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”- The Android to Four.

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.”- Jace to One.

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.”- Five to Two.

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.”- Two to the group.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Really good first try. You got two of them completely right and on another you got the speaker right, but not who was being spoken to. So you have 3 speakers right and two recipients right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'll give it a go:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.” Two to One

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.” The Android to Two

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.” Three to One

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.” Five to Two

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.” One to Everyone

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ok, attempt two:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.”- One to Three.

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”- The Android to Four.

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.”- Five to Two.

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.”- Five to Two.

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.”- Two to the group.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good try! Two of them you got just the speaker right. On another you got both the speaker and the recipient right. You also got just the recipient right on another. So, 3 speakers right and 2 recipients right. As an extra hint you have one with the right characters, but you have them reversed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You still have two of them completely right and on another you have just the recipient correct.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Gah, I both love and hate this game.

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.”- Two to Five.

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”- The Android to Four.

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.”- Three to One.

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.”- Five to Two.

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.”- One to the group.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok try again:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.” Five to Two

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.” The Android to Four

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.” Three to One

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.” Five to Two

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.” One to Everyone

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's a fun way to pass the time at least. :)

You are getting so extremely close now. You have 3 completely correct. One of them you have the right characters, but the order is reversed and on another you have just the recipient right.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So close! You have two of them completely right and two of them you have the right characters, but have them reversed. On another you have just the recipient right.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Okay Third times the charm:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.” Two to Five

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.” The Android to Four

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.” One to Three

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.” Five to Two

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.” Six to Everyone

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ok, ok, here goes:

“We should talk about what happened on the space station.”- Two to Five.

“I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”- The Android to Four.

“And I say you’re the dangerous one.”- One to Three.

“I don’t know, I think I may have played before.”- Five to Two.

“First things first, guys, we gotta get on that space station without
setting off any alarm bells.”- Six to the group.

  39. We have a winner! You're ridiculously good at this game. Which 2 characters would you like bonus spoilers for?

    ReplyDelete
  40. You got them all right, but Vixx barely beat you to the win. I'm in a very generous mood tonight and since you joined in on the fun pick one character of your choice and I'll hook you up with a extra spoiler.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh really that's crazy. Thanks again it was fun and congrats to Silverbow for an awesome head to head. I think I will take spoilers on the Android and Six please.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can i ask for one?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thank you kindly. I was going to go with the Android, but three spoilers might be a little bit too much. Five for me please. Bask in your victory now, Vixx, for I shall defeat you next time...

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Android finds herself alone on the ship as her crew find various kinds of trouble to get into. You may think she's just a android without feelings, but as Six pointed out last week she's "different" and throughout this episode you will come to realize that there is more to our favorite android then one may think. She is most certainly not the same android we first met in the premiere.

Six is still suffering the effects of his wound from last week. He spends most of the episode in a clinic for treatment and while you may not realize the importance of this scene at first I encourage you to pay very close attention to the video he is watching. It is very informative and I believe it holds a very important clue.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So Ann (LOL) is more human than we think? Cameron from T:SCC style? Even tough she was a robot but with human qualities, clue to SIX specifically or to the amnesia mystery?

    ReplyDelete
  46. It was a well fought battle by both of you. I look forward to seeing who wins next time. As long as I can keep getting screeners for this show I'll keep offering up this challenge, so hopefully you'll have many more chances to beat Vixx.

The adventure Five goes on with Two solidifies their relationship just before shattering it in the blink of an eye. Five has an age appropriate moment when she slips away from the watchful eye of Two. What she does while away from Two sets into motion the events that cause the above mentioned trouble for their relationship. It's sad to see this rift form in their friendship as Five spends most of the episode completely in sync with Two as they work together.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Now it's SHATTERING? Dang it why?!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Android isn't quite Cameron level yet, but we get to see a bit of her inner workings.

The thing shown in Six's story may offer a clue to the overall mystery. I could be reading the scene wrong, but the way it plays screams clues.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have my theories on the meaning of all this and how it will play out, but you'll have to read my review tomorrow night to get my take on it. I don't want to say much more about it, but their story was well constructed.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I want to reserve extra character spoilers as game prizes, because I don't want to give to much away and because I don't want to dilute the reason to play the game. If I get a screener for the next episode I'll launch another round of the game for that episode, so you'll hopefully have another chance next week. In the meantime Vixx and Silverbow picked some great characters for spoilers, so enjoy reading through them.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh ok , LOL"inner workings", interesting, Roger Cross being in a clinic kind of reminds me of when he was in the clinic where he met Sonya for the first time ha!

    ReplyDelete
  52. So it didn't feel out of place, having a sort of "girl's night" in this sci-fi show?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah they're really good, i may have been a little hard on Android because i'm not used to androids having human qualities.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It fits in perfectly. Having a girls night is no different then the boys night, albeit it's a bit more reluctant of a partnership then the girls.

    ReplyDelete
  55. They have their own stories this week, yes, and both stories are important.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ok, so Six and Four are the only ones without a boy's night of their own? Aw, LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Even Four? You said he's barely in the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  58. One, Two, Three, and Five share the main load of the episode and get pretty even screen time. Obviously a driving force is the One storyline but by no means is this episode only focused on him.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Four, Six, and The Android don't get as much to do as the other four but do not dismiss their stories this week because they all deliver important information.
