Ugh, they are ruining everything I love about Skye. The name thing I was furious about but now Daisy has completely overwhelmed Skye. Just because she met her psychopathic murdering biological parents does not mean Skye has to completely change her whole identity. It's disgusting what they're doing to her.

I love Skye and Ward so much I'm sticking around for them (I love the others too but these two are my favorites) and I am displeased with what they're doing to both.

ReplyDeleteYou say that like it's a bad thing. This is the MCU. Actually this is Marvel. The only thing constant is change. Change is necessary for good storytelling. I'm perfectly fine with characters growing. Nothing stays the same. That's life.
ReplyDeleteExcept the characters aren't growing. 2B was an out of character disaster for everyone involved (literally all of them got screwed over at some point) and it seems like the trend is continuing.

I know sometimes it's hard to adjust to major changes, but in the grand scheme of things it's just a haircut. There are worse things to have to adjust to such as having your entire town wiped out by a flood or getting a text message at 2 AM telling you that your brother-in-law has stage IV cancer. In the world of the show, Coulson losing his hand is a much bigger change then Skye/Daisy getting a new hairstyle or even using a different alias (especially because she's a spy and spies change their appearance and name all the time).

And DAISY... She will ALWAYS be Skye to me. She been Skye for 27 years, why change. I get that Daisy Johnson is the comic book character but I still hoped her identity wouldn't change at least anymore. She just keeps transforming :/
ReplyDeleteit's a haircut. I understand your concern. I too would hate to see the Skye we know disappear for the sake of adding a comic book character to the show. But a haircut is a superficial change, and while it might be fan service, I think it's ultimately harmless. I'd wait until the season premiere at least before jumping to conclusions.
ReplyDeleteI actually think a completely different look for somebody who's trying to stay off the radar is a good idea. Actually I think shorthair for someone who does a lot of combat is a good ideal and I've always wondered why so many female comic book characters have long flowing hair. Isn't that a little dangerous? Also the character is a spy. Spies change their look and use different names all the time. Keeping the same appearance and even the same name could put her at risk. Hydra knows what she looks like and she has superpowers. That makes her a big target. Maybe a different hairstyle could keep her from getting kidnapped. There are logical explanations for this.

Many people are also ecstatic. I personally don't care one way or the other. The writers can't make everyone happy. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you want to actually have a discussion about this, citing that other people agree with you doesn't do anything to get your point across. Take the time to explain your own opinion.

We actually have no idea how long she was using Skye as an alias. But it's just that, an alias. Skye is a spy. Name changes and new hairstyles are normal for that lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with it too. Actually, the more I think about it the more it makes sense. Hydra knows her name and knows what she looks like. With her powers, you know that they would want her. Using a different name and changing her appearance drastically may help keep her from getting kidnapped.
ReplyDeleteI feared that Daisy Johnson would swamp Skye - I didn't mind that Skye was Daisy at first but didn't want that to happen - and it looks like my worst fears are coming true. First the name thing (why exactly would Skye feel uncomfortable with a name she chose herself? She felt uncomfortable as Mary Sue Poots which is why she changed it in the first place. And why exactly does she owe anything to one parent who literally tried to murder her and the other who wanted to murder all her friends?) and now the haircut. The Skye I loved is gone and now it seems like she's someone completely different.
ReplyDeleteWell, i already explained my thoughts on the name change. While you may not agree with it, the fact that she's doing it to honor her father proves that she is not the character from the comics. If I'm wrong and that does happen, I'll be just as upset. But so far we have little information to go on. Watching the next episode should give us a better idea.

Forgiveness is often more about the person doing the forgiving. Skye desperately wanted to find her parents and get answers to who she was. Her mother may have been pretty far gone, but Cal did love her, he did put her first in the end, and he did show that there was good in him. Maybe that was all Skye/Daisy needed. Again, Ward has tried to kill Hunter, Bobbi, May, Fitz, and Simmons, yet you want Skye to forgive him. That's fine. Even if some people disagree with you you're aloud to have that opinion, for no other reason than you like Ward as a character. Now think about how much Skye's desire for a nice, normal, happy family means to her. If there's some aspect of that that she can cling to, not matter how thin, doesn't it make sense that she would?

ReplyDeleteI assumed it would be consistent with the latest version of the character from issue SHIELD #7. They took great pains in that issue to make all the characters look like their television counterpart. In that Daisy's hair was somewhat short, but not really.
ReplyDeleteI saw that. I wonder if it's already happened. I'm terrified at the thought that Coulson's murderer probably knows that he's alive. I also love the fact that she mentioned Agents of SHIELD first before the other sources. It made me feel like she values the show. I hope she's in another episode this season. It needs to become a tradition.

The only issue I have with her new show (which looks interesting to me) is if it impacts her availabilty for AOS (I know silly but...), I'd love a Sif a season tradition alright.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it would be that much of a problem. Amy Acker managed to do an episode despite being on POI at the time. J August Richards came back despite all the projects he's been working on. You never know.

ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, whether you like it or not, all the characters have developed from what we saw in 1A. To me all of it fits and flows naturally and gives us interesting characters across the board.

ReplyDeleteI think part of the problem is people are used to TV shows and movies where characters don't change at all to the point where they become stagnant or characters of their selves. You're not provided with the opportunity to see how major events affect the character because in the next episode they are back to exactly how they were before, as if nothing happened. That doesn't happen on AOS. For example, we got to see Fitz deal with what happened to him as any real person would. We got to see his frustration at not being able to do the things he used to do and see him adjust to his new normal. I'm very grateful for that being a member of the disabled community.

ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with you, for example while I gave watching NCIS, Tony petty much never outgrew the playboy character for the 7 seasons I watched, it was always the women. At some point it just got boring and repetitive.
ReplyDeleteAOS has development, both major and minor (just May's change over what SKye told her about Barhain), and I had actually just been thinking about Fitz's injury as an example. You didn't just have him dealing with how to deal with this massive life changing injury, but you also got to see how everyone else of his "family" had to deal with it to, with varying degrees of success. Thought it was brilliant acting all round.

ReplyDeleteAlso, people seem to forget that Skye changed a lot between seasons one and two as well, but Chloe Bennet managed to make the character feel consistent then and I have faith that she'll do it again.
A very good point, Skye the Shield agent was very different to Skye the consultant, and it worked. Let's wait and see...

Skye has always been Daisy, and after years of searching she finally realized that. So now, she can close that chapter of her life asking "Who I am?" to "Who is Daisy Johnson and how do I grow into myself more?"
ReplyDeleteSure Cal may have had a hand in her deciding to take her real name, but not that much. I can't believe you defend Ward's actions and then you criticize Cal's actions who is arguably 10x more redeemable than Ward is. Although Skye and Cal got off to a wrong start, it was honestly just a lack of communication and understanding. However, I feel like if Cal is to ever comeback and regains his memories he might be more of a villain...but we will deal with that if that even happens.
She's not changing her identity because she found out who her parents were. To her, Skye was always another alias. Daisy Johnson is who she is, Skye wants to be herself. She was Daisy when she was born, and she was Skye most of the show but she wants to be who she was born to be, Daisy Johnson.
She has always been Daisy. She just didn't know it yet. She's not going to be a totally new character. Just a new version of herself.

ReplyDeleteOoh, I'm curious what her haircut will be like. And I NEED her to get the Quake suit from the comics. The casts Simmons made her were clearly an early prototype of the Quake gauntlets, and Fitz can make a suit like that in his sleep.

ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is, I always groan at the unbelievability of female action stars not bothering to pull their hair back/up when heading into battle, and AoS is no exception with that. Cutting her hair is another way to do that, I guess...
ReplyDeleteWe have to see how it's written, but Chloe says that adopting her birth name is representative of her finally learning the truth, as painful as it was, about where she came from and closing the door on that chapter. The name "Skye" is tied to a part of her life that's now over, the search for answers. It'll obviously take time for we fans to get used to the name change, but if done correctly, I think it can certainly be realistic.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I dislike the bangs (not a lot of women can pull these off IMO) and prefer her S1 hairstyle, but I didn't claim the entire second season was going to suck before it had even started because of them. Then again, I don't have some kind of agenda to diss everything about the show because they aren't conforming to my personal view of some characters.
ReplyDeleteThe show AoS was in the beginning was pummeled by viewers and critics alike and lost a gigantic chunk of its audience. The vast majority of the changes have been for the better, I'll say.

ReplyDeleteThis show is not about the comics. The MCU as a whole is loosely based on the comics. Daisy Johnson isn't biracial in the comics but Skye is on the show.

ReplyDeleteAnd Daisy Johnson is an important figure in the lore, just as Daisy will be in the show dealing with the Secret Warriors. Since they have picked "Quake" to be what Skye becomes it makes sense to go the full way and have her take the name Daisy.

ReplyDeleteYeah, something tells me they'll make us a wait a bit longer, or they'd already be flashing around concept art of the suit. (Although it's always possible the reveal will be as part of the promotional photoshoot for S3.) They may not feel that Skye is far enough in her evolution into a superheroine to get the suit, or even go by "Quake" (they've confirmed she'll call herself Daisy but I don't think the same has been said for the code name). If so, while I want to see her in the suit already, I also appreciate that they're taking the time to properly develop the character before she takes on a superheroine identity, which is a pretty big deal.
ReplyDeleteJust a few days ago I cited Arrow as an example of doing it wrong with their "everything but the kitchen sink" approach - namely, let's throw as many characters as possible into superhero costumes and give them superhero names, as if that will be awesome in itself and the journey isn't important. Not that they didn't try to give their characters any kind of journeys, but they were rushed and unsatisfying in the grand scheme of things, unlike AoS where the truly tactonic shift in Skye's character over the past 2 years has been believable. So if they need to take their time to do things right, that's fine by me.

ReplyDeleteYou just this conversation and the thread itself gives you another feeling for actors and what they deal with. There's an online debate about a guy shaving and a woman's hairstyle...
A lot of people just take every new bit of information presented to them as further evidence of things they'd already believed in. That's what happens when your opinions or beliefs stiffen into dogma, which can't be questioned no matter what. So when you're dead-set on the notion that a character has been (or will be) badly written, even something as insignifcant as a haircut will be enough to reaffirm that belief in your mind.

Obviously, an ordinary human is at a severe disadvantage in a fight against an Asgardian, but I'm sure he can find a nifty weapon like "Bambino" (a.k.a. the Destroyer gun) or that thing that dissolved Garrett to balance the playing field.

ReplyDeleteBTW, if you're looking for a good show to watch with kickass and complex women, Nikita which ended a couple of years ago is a great choice. The second half of Season 1 and the entirety of Season 2 are some of the best TV I've ever seen, and it's incredible how much female characters and the relationships between them drive the narrative (apart from the fact that they kick inordinate amounts of ass, physically and otherwise), which is still rare on TV. The reason I just thought of it is that the heroine, Nikita, actually DID have her hair in a ponytail or bun pretty often when going out to fight, which I appreciated. Heh.
ReplyDeleteIt goes back to the point you made about how fan service is no problem as long as it doesn't alter the creative direction of the show in a meaningful way. Sure, the reason they've asked Chloe to cut her hair is almost certainly to give her Daisy's look in the comics, but honestly - who cares? It's not like it's some major storytelling decision.
ReplyDeleteTo give an example to the contrary: it's my understanding that Call is a full-on villain in the comics and has no positive relationship with his daughter whatsoever. Yet as S2 wore on, we saw that the AoS version of Cal was a humanized and tragic villain, and the relationship between he and Skye, while highly problematic and dysfunctional, was deeply moving in a way. I would've hated for them to fully vilify Cal and destroy the Skye/Cal relationship for the sake of being true to the comics, thus wasting Kyle MacLachlan's immense talent - and they didn't. So they clearly have the sense to know when something is important enough to justify deviating from the source material, and when it isn't.
And as I've said before, CAL IS CRAZY. I'm not sure how anyone could've gotten the impression that a man in his 50's who giddily declares "Best day ever!" before going to kill someone for revenge, or dances in joy when he discovers his daughter got superpowers, or tries to take down an entire spy agency with a few walks-ins from the street who have lame powers, or starts singing "A Bicycle Built for Two" to himself while a prisoner on a plane, is completely normal and sane. His mental state might not have been bad enough for him to get away with his crimes in a court of law, but he was sure as hell less sane and rational than Ward. Can you imagine someone like Cal on an undercover mission inside SHIELD for years?
ReplyDeleteI give them so much credit for Fitz's arc in S2, it's not common for shows to deal with disability in a way that's so realistic and dignified. (And with Coulson losing his hand, that's already three main cast members with disabilities between AoS and Agent Carter, so: respect, Marvel.) Iain said at the Comic-Con panel that he did some research into the effects of brain damage while the majority was done by the writers, and I have no trouble believing they went to the effort because I've seen little but wall-to-wall praise for his performance and the writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm also impressed with how Simmons has been developed in the second half of S2. It takes some courage to put such a sweet, adorable character on a dark path, but they had her change in a realistic way in response to what she's been through... just like people do in real life. They didn't play it safe by having her stay the same character that viewers love through all the crap. AoS is big on character development and growth, and that's one of the biggest strengths in a show that could've easily just been cool Marvel mythology with action scenes and colorrful costumes.
I also really enjoyed how the FitzMack friendship blossomed out of that situation. A wall had appeared between Fitz and his existing friends/teammates because they were all walking on eggshells around him seeing him as fragile and vulnerable and not knowing how to handle it. And then you had Mack, who was A) direct and honest instead of treating Fitz any differently because of his disability, and B) unfamiliar with the "old" Fitz, so he wasn't expecting anything from him, he just accepted and liked him as he was. That's another example of good character writing, and having a solid foundation for a friendship instead of it just randomly existing.
ReplyDeleteWell, a haircut is pretty minor thing to me so adjusting to it shouldn't be a big deal: after a few episodes of seeing Chloe with shorter hair, we're bound to get used to it. A name change is much more important, but I don't think we're just going to start S3 with everyone calling Skye "Daisy" and treating it like the most natural thing in the world. It's a change that needs to be addressed and explained on-screen, and I imagine it will be. If not, I too will feel cheated.

ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm sure all of those people who agree with KG about how bad the S2 finale was and S3 sounds can come here and make their own case. Simply citing their existence doesn't add anything to the discussion or make her argument any more credible.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said before, even if it's not justified, even if Cal is actually ten times worse than Ward (not at all what I believe but whatever) - Skye has a need to forgive Cal. Believing she's the biological daughter of TWO monsters would be a terrible thing and make it hard to live with herself. Since Jiaying went as far as to try to murder her own child, it's only natural that Skye would cling on to whatever goodness she had found in her other parent. Cal may or may not deserve forgiveness, but Skye deserves the peace of mind she's able to glean from forgiving him, and that's good enough.

ReplyDeleteI promise I won't accuse the show of screwing Hunter's character if he stays clean-shaven. However, if he cuts himself shaving and someone says "You should start being careful with a razor, dude", I reserve the right to complain about victim blaming.
All of the characters had amazing development this season. It's not just that they let their characters change, but they let them change naturally and believably. When Simmons first started showing problems with powered people I immediately rolled my eyes and leapt to the conclusion that she was going to become, maybe not evil, but annoyingly antagonistic towards Skye, which didn't make any sense for her character. I, like many others, thought this because that sort of thing has been done over and over on tv; writers want to put a wedge between characters but they typically find a flimsy excuse and milk it for all its worth. Imagine my surprise, an relief, when Simmons was nothing but supportive towards Skye. Yes she made an insensitive comment or two about her powers, but she never thought anything less of Skye herself. Simmons changed, but she didn't stop being Simmons. Just like Fitz didn't stop being Fitz or Skye didn't stop being Skye.
ReplyDeleteI remember a scene, I think it was the mid-season finale, where Skye briefly breaks through her new badass, May-influenced persona to give Coulson a hug. It was a simple gesture, but it helped show that, while the writers may have changed Skye drastically, possibly because of some negative feedback from fans, they never retconned the character. And I think Chloe Bennet and the rest of the cast deserve props for maintaining that consistency even as these characters change. Which brings it back to why I'm not sweating the name/hair change.
The fact that they show how these major events effect the characters is what I like about AOS in the MCU in general. Has anyone else done superheroes with PTSD before? Too many times they never show the after effects but they do here and I respect them for that.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of representation of persons with disabilities in the MCU, this is the second time that the director of SHIELD has been non-traditionally able. Considering how little representation there is a persons with disabilities on television this is great.
Considering in SHIELD #7 they made Daisy Johnson more like her TV counterpart, I don't think we have a lot to worry about. Also she had longer hair than in the picture below, about three or 4 inches. I'm inclined to believe that's the look that TV Skye/Daisy will have.

ReplyDeleteThere is going to be a time jump, so I think the majority of that transition will take place largely off screen unfortunately. I think it will be addressed; maybe another character slips and calls her Skye, or maybe Skye becomes a nickname that just a few people like Coulson use. After all the uproar, I think the writers will have to do something to appease the fans, myself included because I too want some explanation, but I don't think the name will be nearly as important as Daisy's role as an inhuman and now, not only a shield agent, but the leader of a team of powered people. Questions about identity have always been an important part of Skye/Daisy's journey, but her name is just one aspect of that. While I would like them to address the name, the fact that the writers and Chloe have an explanation is enough for me, whether or not they voice it on screen.
ReplyDeleteActually, they made some changes in the comic books recently. Comics Daisy is now of in human ancestry and they made her mom look exactly like her TV mom. I wouldn't be surprised at all if her one-shot in September we find out that Daisy is now of Chinese ancestry. Essentially they are taking parts of what they like from the TV version and passing it back to the comics version of the character. They also gave comics Daisy the nickname Skye and made her hair is longer in the new version. It isstill short but not that short. Basically the changes are going in both directions.
ReplyDeleteIt's the internet after all. You can find support for nearly any opinion about anything if you look hard enough. But when it comes to opinions, the quality of the argument is more important than the quantity of people who believe it. At least it should be anyway.

I wonder if that's why they decided the character would have facial hair. I do remember from the comic con interview that he arrived on the set via the redeye and didn't even have time to take a shower before he started filming.

ReplyDeleteDepending on how Jemma's situation develops this might be the way to address it with the gap. ie if Jemma is missing for the duration of the "gap" and then returns to have everyone else calling Skye Daisy, I could see them using that to explain why Daisy chose to change her name.

As I said above if Jemma is absent for the gap in the rock, then they could use her return and confusion over the name change to address the change.
ReplyDeleteThat is also a possibility, assuming she is absent for that long. I have a feeling that Simmons, or something resembling Simmons, got out of that rock before anyone noticed she was missing. Personally, I'm rooting for the Agent Venom theory that's been floating around.
ReplyDeleteI've actually been wondering myself who are going to be part of the AoS version of Secret Warriors. Lincoln is a shoe-in, given both the fact that he realized the truth about Jiaying in the end of S2 (thus being more inclined to work with SHIELD) and Luke joining the main cast. Two other possible members are Mike, if he comes back, and Alisha (the Inhuman who could clobe herself - Lincoln pointed out that she, like others, was misled into helping Jiaying, so it's not unthinkable that she would be willing to follow in Lincoln's footsteps).
ReplyDeleteBut right now, the only superpowered characters in the main cast are Skye and Lincoln, so it's hard to tell who's going to be on the team other than them.
It would be fairly easy for the show to have Alisha as she's Adrienne's stunt double from memory, though the fx costs might be an issue.

So very true, they all have developed, even May has changed from the detached May of Season 1.
ReplyDeleteAnd when you consider while Fury's is a cannon disability that had to be included, there was nothing that forced them to cut off Coulson's hand. That and the well developed female characters (on all sides) is another plus.

ReplyDeleteThere's also Donnie Gill, if they can fish him out of the ocean, and though it might be a stretch, they could get Absorbing Man, seeing as he was more of a gun for hire than an outright villain and could possibly be convinced to work for shield in exchange for his freedom. However, I think both are more likely to join Ward's team. Also, there's a good chance Simmons might get superpowers from the Kree stone, so you never know. I think we'll only get one or two completely new characters on the team this season, three at most. As has been mentioned, this already large cast can only hand a few new faces.
ReplyDeleteWell, considering Donnie was shot and nearly killed by SHIELD (by Skye herself actually, though I assume he's unaware of that), I think he's almost as unlikely as join a SHIELD-related outfit as Absorbing Man is. Moreover, there's always the question of whether they won't prefer to stick to comic canon, in which Blizzard is a villain and member of the Masters of Evil. It actually makes me wonder if we won't eventually see a supervillain team (a real one, not the joke Cal had going) rise to challenge the Secret Warriors. Between Blizzard, Absorbing Man, Graviton and probably a couple I'm forgetting, there are enough loose ends they could tie up in a cool way if they do this.

That could be, but I also thought we'd see more of the process of Coulson rebuilding SHIELD this time last year, yet it seemed to already be up and running when the show returned.

ReplyDeleteIt's possible we'll be seeing a proto-Secret Warriors team from the get go, but it likely won't be the definite one and wouldn't surprise me if a few of those proto-members get offed in order to emphasize Lash's threat. They did do something similar in last season's premiere, after all.
ReplyDeleteDon't see Alisha being developed into a real character anytime soon, being such a last minute addition to the previous season and played by a stuntswoman rather than a full-time actress to boot. The only reason she even exists was to increase the number of Inhuman enemies SHIELD would have to face in the finale, any new appearance of her would likely be to give her a proper sendoff IMO.

Ragtag is the season's codename, mind you, the episode name itself is covered in black; I *think* someone on Reddit managed to read "Laws of Nature" out of it. "Written by" is pretty obviously Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, they've written last season's premiere and finale so it makes sense they'd do it again on the new one. No idea about the director, and don't feel like researching those who do the job on the show to throw a guess.

Actually, Alisha's FX could possibly be some of the cheapest to use. They don't have to show her copy herself every time, just like they didn't show Gordon's teleport every time.

I don't think she would look good with the "Angelina Jolie's hacker" look either but looks like is a adaptation and its longer. I don't think changing her hair was that important since a lot of comicbook adaptation don't follow exactly the comic looks.

ReplyDeleteRight. Well, it's a definite possibility, I don't imagine Lash is the only one with the radical view that New Inhumans should be "judged", and eliminated if they aren't found worthy. Sadly, our history has taught us that an alarmingly large number of people can be sold on the idea of purity of race.
ReplyDeleteA few folks who are comic readers have described Lash as similar to Ronan the Accuser. I'm really curious to see what his character will be like.
It's funny - per Misscar, the comic book version of Daisy is changing to better resemble the AoS version, too, including her hair now being slightly longer. With Chloe, on balance, cutting her hair, I guess they'll meet halfway in terms of hair length. LOL.

I also hope ABC gets its shit together and doesn't wait until a week before the season premiere to start promoting the show's return, like last year. With the state of the ratings, they can't afford to slack off.
