David Beinoff and DB Weiss simply because they have created the biggest franchise by a country mile. Yes Shonda Rhimes has several shows which have been picked up but she wouldn't be enjoying the success she has without her deal with ABC. JJ Abrams has several series under his belt and should be on the list too.
Successful as in a lot of money: probably all of them, but I don't watch theirs shows. Successful as in I really enjoy his shows, please let him do his job as long as it's possible: Michael Hirst, Bryan Fuller, Charlie Brooker
I'd say it's between Shonda Rhimes and Dick Wolf. I'm not a huge fan of the Law and Order and Chicago fire/PD/Med franchise, but they are extremely successful.
What the hell people? How is berlwnti #2 when none of these shows have cracked a 2.0? I think Wolf is by far the most sucessful producer, with Shonda and Chuck close to each other in second and third.
Though I greatly prefer Greg Berlanti (and his shows), TV seems to be all about Shondaland these days. FYI, I'm not hating. I do watch Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.
Have to go with Shonda Rhimes because I like Scndal and HTGAWM. And she created Greys anatomy and even though I don't watch it, it's been on for what 13 seasons?
Dick Wolf, without doubt. He's been at this for over 30 years. Miami Vice New York Undercover (A truly great underrated procedural) Law and Order franchise Chicago franchise Dragnet and a slew of other small shows. He also worked on Hill Street Blues.
Get Betlanti will have 4 superhero shows, the Debra Messing show got a season 2. Granted it will be surprising if it makes it through another full season and I'm pretty sure he has another drama for the fall. So if success is measured by the number of shows on the air at any one time he wins by a mile over everyone else.
If we were talking long-term, I would definitely put Dick Wolf in the top and he's still doing great. Though I think just thinking currently, it has to go to Shonda. That woman could sell any show to a network, have it get picked up, promoted, and likely a success when others wouldn't even get a pitch meeting.
She's definitely the next Dick Wolf. She has more shows in a shorter span than he did, he just wins for longevity. She'll catch him no doubt. I didn't think your post was derogatory and while I may not agree with her thought process sometimes, she is very good at what she does. Hollywood loves her.
I guess it depends how you subjectivity successful. I'd go with Steven Moffat (Doctor Who and Sherlock being two of the biggest drama's on the BBC) and Greg Yaitanes/Jonathan Tropper whose work on Banshee is innovative and flawless.
We can agree to disagree. But I mean, Law & Order made it 20 seasons, SVU might reach thag feat as well, and the Chicago series just won't stop growing. He's still in demand 25 years later, with his newest show one of the most-anticipated of the season. He knows what people want, and he's 20 years above the highest age in the main demo. I highly doubt Berlanti will be making all these sucesses that far down the line.
I love GoT but D&D simply adapted asoiaf. The first 4 seasons followed the original story almost religiously. I hate to give them that much creative credit, sorry.
You don't have to have a series run 7-10 years to be successful. GB has worked steadily on fan favorite shows for 16 years. Dawson's Creek/Everwood/Eli Stone/Brothers and Sisters/Flash/Arrow/Blindspot/Supergirl/Legends of Tomorrow/...he has his hands in all of those and more. That is success.

They are all pretty successful in their own right... I guess it does depend on what are the respective parameters that one would define success as.
If it's regular network standards we're going by I'd say Shonda is probably the winner. (If this was 15-20 years ago Dick Wolf would probably be in the lead)

ReplyDeleteHe is only the creator of NCIS: LA and was the NCIS showrunner for like two years. He doesn't own the franchise.
