'DON'T LOOK NOW' REVIEW

THE BACKSTORY OF CHARLES

Again, we have an episode that delivers quite a lot of answers, despite still not being quite clear of the entire picture. The most important thing we learn in this episode was the backstory of Charles DiLaurentis. I found this aspect of the episode fascinating from the very beginning, continuing on from the end of episode 3. They didn't chicken out either - they actually told us what happened. Sure, what Kenneth said was just what Jessica told him so we can't be sure of the authenticity of some of his story, but the parts where he was present in Charles's life can be seen as pretty accurate. So Charles was born 15 months before Jason and was troubled from an early age, becoming too dangerous to keep in the house. His parents then institutionalised him at Radley, which was actually the reason the family moved to Rosewood, so that was a neat little thing to learn. It was also saddening to learn that Charles committed suicide at the age of 16, which is deeply tragic despite what Charles did to Alison when she was 11 months old.

What I loved about the progression of this storyline within this episode was the denial that Hanna and some of the others had about Charles's actual death. I love group scenes, so when the girls took a trip to the data centre to retrieve Charles's files, I became excited. They really took their own initiative and followed the plan. It was a good scene too, especially since we get the talk between Hanna and Emily about how the girls stand with each other - "we'll get there". These kinds of scenes allow us to see the bigger picture with these girls and how they interact and we can tell the dollhouse saga hasn't ended with them. The best part of the whole Charles mystery in this episode was Hanna's line to Spencer at Charles's grave: "We've been down this road before. Every time A thinks we're on to him, he does something to throw us off track." After years of being frustrated that these girls don't learn from their past mistakes, this was a welcome change. This season has had the girls fight harder for answers as Aria has also been able to actively seek out answers. But does nobody find it odd how she is always the one to find things - the photo in the button jar in the last episode, the Radley files in this episode - just seems a little convenient, or maybe the writers really just want her to the one who finds answers this season.

THE DECONSTRUCTION OF THE LIARS

Spencer had a pretty big episode here actually. Whether you love or hate Spencer's spiral into addiction, you have to admit that the show is handling it well. It's very realistic and we can really understand why Spencer is feeling the need to relapse. I don't really want a drug addiction storyline for Spencer again, but as long as they treat it differently and it allows the writers to develop Spencer more, I can be really okay with it. I loved her flashbacks so much and it really provided some true horror to the other things that happened in the dollhouse. I never expected Spencer to wake up covered in blood with a trail leading to the door like a body had been dragged - that was awesome. It makes me really curious as to whether Hanna was write about Charles's mind games, or if Spencer really did hurt someone. With the experiments and games Charles put them through, it wouldn't be too far-fetched for Spencer to be mind-controlled to do something and forget about it. I can't wait to find out if the writers really are going to go that far with Spencer. "I can't sleep, okay? My mind won't shut off. I just, just want to quiet the noise. I need to quiet the noise."

I expected Hanna's storyline to take her where it did. I could feel the claustrophobia she felt from the constant attention from Caleb - and even I was getting slightly annoyed. I mean, I love me some Caleb and he has been so great in helping Hanna lately, but as Hanna said, he's just a little suffocating at the moment. "Your constant need to keep tabs on me, it's making me feel like I'm still in that bunker." Hard words, but very effective and relatable. It now means Hanna and Caleb will have some space and I hope this means Hanna will get to explore other things outside her relationship while her PTSD continues to break her. Emily, on the other hand, seems fine besides what Pam has told us. And am I the only one who has noticed that Pam has taken over from Ashley as the main parent in Rosewood now? Ashley has barely been in this season compared to Pam. Emily spent most of the episode with Sara again. Not saying I don't like Sara, but I feel she is dragging Emily down and her scenes have become far less interesting than everyone else's. I'm hoping this changes soon.

Aria managed to have a good episode too, having a few isolated scenes that further deepens the mystery. I loved her flashback to the dollhouse too after getting her note from A saying "you're MY doll bitch", and the transition to Aria in her fake room saying "I'm not your doll." I am fascinated by Charles's need to restore the Liars to how they were in season one, with Aria having the highlights in her hair. It reminded me of I Know What You Did Last Summer when she woke up with her hair all cut off. Aria's scene in the dark room was creepy too, and I was hoping she'd save herself rather than have some random new guy save her. Is Clark a new recurring character? He seems to be set up that way as he has a few things in common with Aria that's to do with photography. His name also reminds me of Clark Kent, who had a secret identity. Maybe Clark does too? I'm always suspicious of new guys so forgive me.

EPISODE VERDICT

The ending kept my interest peaked after an all-round good progressive episode. I noticed Toby was missing from this episode and his partner after they both had big roles in episode three. They probably couldn't fit them in since this episode was more about exploring Charles's backstory. It was touching to see both Alison and Jason affected by this news despite only recently learning he was their brother. I like Charles's story and that he's dead and A is assuming his identity - or is Charles even dead? The flashbacks for Spencer and Aria were amazing, and Hanna continued to shine. I feel like they're struggling with knowing what to do for Emily this season and it saddens me, so her storyline with Sara had better kick up a notch or there's not going to be much need for Emily. Great scenes included the grave scene, and the small breakdowns of Hanna, Spencer and Aria as they confront their feelings. People may have found it boring but I was enthralled by the story.

EPISODE AWARDS

Prettiest Little Liar: Hanna Marin for her wit and drive to know the truth, not just what someone is telling her.

Most Dreamiest Guy: Jason. He helped with the mystery loads in revealing the story about Aunt Carol's house.

Biggest Asshole: Kenneth DiLaurentis, for saying his kid's death was a relief.

Most Sympathetic Character: Aria Montgomery.

Favourite Episode Pairing: Spencer and Hanna. They didn't really get that much but it was great seeing them together at Aunt Carols' house.

Best Line: "What did I do? What did you make me do?"

Funniest Line: N/A.

Best Moment: I loved the transitional moment when Byron caught Aria in a lie and Caleb caught Hanna in a lie, while Pam also talked to Emily about Sara. It was just a greatly directed and edited moment. But the best moment will go to the scene at Charles's tombstone.

Saddest Moment: Aria finally telling her father what her room was like. "There was no way for me to get out."

Creepiest Moment: Aria in the dark room and is locked inside. "You're MY doll, bitch - A".

Shadiest Moment: For me, when Sara asked how long Emily could hold her breath underwater. I think she's planning on drowning her in the future and wants to see how long it would take to do so. Perfect serial killer skills.

Damned Disappointment: We didn't get to see where the blood came from that was on Spencer.

Biggest Question Mark Award: Is Charles really dead?

Biggest ReveAl: Charles isn't Charles, but A is assuming his identity.

A's Mysteries

CHARLES DILAURENTIS

So Charles is NOT Charles DiLaurentis. Instead, A is just assuming his identity which also means A attended Radley at the same time as Charles and knew him. How are the girls going to get the records of who was at Radley at the time Charles was in Radley when the records are getting shredded? Or is Charles even dead? Hanna had a good idea to dig the body up, and even if the gravestone was planted naturally and wasn't a fake, it's still possible that casket is empty.

DID SPENCER KILL SOMEONE?

There was a lot of blood on Spencer and in her room. Was it just a mind trick and game by Charles, or something much bigger. She really could have been hypnotised into hurting somebody as far as Charles's games go, so Spencer may have the right idea by thinking she might have done something she can't remember.

  1. We learned a lot about Charles DiLaurentis in this episode, as well as how the girls are still coping with PTSD. Did you guys enjoy the episode? Let me know!

This episode was awesome. Spencer shined in the episode, and by shine I mean she was in it more than the others, and I always love that. As u said, the drug storyline is really repetitive, they´ve done like 2 or 3 times already, it´s boring, but as u also said, Spencer has been through a lot and her reasons for going back there are totally acceptable. I needed some space from Caleb as well. U can see that Hanna is the one who´s most desperate to unmask A, they all are, but she showed it more in this episode. I don´t trust Sarah, every episode that goes I trust her even less, it´s just a feeling. And now Aria loves dolls? It´s really creepy and I don´t understand why, the dolls somehow represent A, and they know that, so why? Thank god that Charles wasn´t Jason´s twin or anything, I don´t like the twin theory, any of them. But if Charles is dead, and I think they should have dug out that grave anyway (I would have), why would Marlene say that A is Charles Dilaurentis? Even if A is assuming his identity, that doesn´t make him Charles. And if he´s dead, that means that it´s even less logical for another person to cause that much pain to the liars and especially Alison, who could it be? UGH, I need 6x10 already :P
P.S.: 6x09 is called "Back to Radley"

  3. Great review Gavin. U really analyzed it well and put the episode apart to the smallest pieces.
I liked the episode, but disliked 1 major things. The girls keeping Charles a secret from everyone is so annoying. They need to tell people stuff, cause 1 day A could take them again and no one would have a clue.
Overall I catch myself being greedy and not happy with the amount of answers, in this case maybe with the fact that we don't know if the answers we got are truthful. The thing we know is that Kessica was hiding someone in the house, was it Charles, Bethany or a 3rd person no clue but she was hiding someone.
I loved the individual focus on each character and finally grew to like Aria again. Aria and Byron always had a strong connection I'm glad they used him for this part of Aria's story.
Spencer was marvelous, once again she was the standout Liar with her crazy state. Not a fan of the pill popping but why she isbdoing it is great. A great mystery to follow the story.
I was so freaked out when Emily and Sara where diving. That chick i such a wild card. Can't wait to find out what her story is.
Caleb was too pushy this week. Hope he realizes what Hanna was about.

    Can't wait for Mona's comeback.

  4. Excellent review Gavin! This was another episode I loved with the exception of a couple of things. I never liked Caleb but I found him especially annoying in this episode. I'm not too fond of the return of Spencer's addiction either but I really can't argue with their reasoning.I'm loving all the answers we're getting so far this season and the flashbacks to the dollhouse as well. I love seeing how the girls are dealing with what happened as well.

  5. We know noone is really dead on this show, who's to say that Charles didnt killed another person at Ridley and took his place?.
We saw more flashbacks in this episodes than in the otehrs and im happy about that, I hope that one episode is a full "what happened in the bunker" one, the girls need to talk about what happened there at some point, right?.
Im not a fan of teh whole Sarah/Emily situation, im with Hanna there "I dont know the girl, why would i care?" iand i honestyly dont care, I hope she is the one that dies and becomes the new mistery for part b and s7.
I get why Caleb and Aria's dad were all over them, theya re worried, they knwo the guy that took the girls is still out tehre and will come for them and the girl s preffer to do everything alone instead of seek help.

  6. Yay glad you enjoyed it Nicole. Totally agree with your sentiments. I am so ready for this second half too, it needs to happen already!!

  7. Thanks so much for leaving your awesome thoughts! You're so right, and I am baffled by the Charles thing too. I could understand why the real Charles would want to hurt Alison, but if he's dead, then why would someone else go through all this trouble? I totally would have dug out the grave too, Hanna was onto something.
And thanks for the episode title name, I'll add it to the episode guide :D Once I get an airdate for episode 11 I'll add that too. So excited!

  8. Thanks very much Spindae2.
You have an excellent point about the girls keeping stuff from other people, and they seem to be flirting with a repeat performance of their kidnapping by keeping everyone in the dark so if it happens again, you're right, no one will have a clue what to do or who to look for. Complete honesty would work wonders here.
I missed Byron and I'm glad you picked up on their strong connection - it was such a relief to see it again in this episode after his long absence. Mona's comeback is literally the only thing holding me together right now haha.

  9. Thanks very much SGU! Caleb was very annoying in this episode and I usually do like him. I'm glad you're loving the other elements of the show right now and how the effects of the dollhouse are reverberating through the girls' lives. Really love your thoughts!

  10. I do think that Mrs Dilaurentis faked Charles' death and when he tried to kill Alison, she covered for him.
Great episode after all, this season is really on fire and I love and enjoy every moment of it :) Great review by the way, I share your views on the different storylines.

    ReplyDelete
  11. You mean Charles could have done a bait-and-switch like Victoria in Revenge? It's certainly possible! It's a great theory. The amount of flashbacks is awesome as you're right, there was more and they were so interesting. The girls are going to have to confront each other by the mid-season finale I'm sure, before the time jump, where we will probably be able to piece the whole thing together.
Haha Hanna was on point with the don't know the girl line, and you're right, we don't really care for her so that's why I feel she's dragging Emily's storyline down. That would be awesome if she did become the new mystery ;)
The girls can be just as annoying as the guys protecting them, but constant watching and tracking their cars isn't going to help Hanna get through it. People definitely suffer from PTSD in different ways and I think we're going to see how Hanna is going to manage hers.
Thanks for sharing your amazing thoughts as always Ron!

  12. Thanks so much Valentin! I think I'm with you on that theory about faking Charles's death and helped cover for him when Alison "died". He seemed to really want his sister dead from a young age, which is very disturbing but fits into the show very well.
So glad you are enjoying this season, and thanks for the kind words :D

  13. You're welcome. Yeah, I think that he might've been very jealous of her since her birth and might've always wanted to make her disappear and when he heard about Mona being A, he stole the game from her and started to look for Alison as he could've known she wasn't dead after all.

Now that I think about it, I need Mona to be in every episode, I love her, and I want her to fully be one of the liars, she, along side Spencer, are the brains of the group and they´d accomplish a lot with her. She´s a main character but we´re seeing for of Pam than Mona now, I never liked that Mona is so underated

  15. Not telling the police right away about Charles was a really stupid move, but we let it pass, they are only 18 for 6 more eps. ^_^
Byron with all his faults turns out to be my favorite parent, right up there with Ashley and Ella. The actor really ads something to the role that makes it feel right and honest.
I'm so looking forward to Mona, but a bit pissed about the decoy. Did U read the press release for 6x06?

  16. Great Review as usual.
After kicking up the pace in Pretty Little Liars Season 6 Episode 3,
this hour was rather disappointing to me. A returned into the fold, and it
didn't work really well. I will say that the flashbacks were a good
choice to include, giving us further insight into why our liars have
been on edge since making their great escape.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mona returns next episode.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks Joy! I know a lot of people feel the same as you, and there's about the same amount of people who feel completely opposite - and feel this hour was better than last week's. To me, I think they're pretty even. I think it's interesting how this season has episodes that can divide general opinion. The flashbacks have helped this season out I think, as they've provided PLL with a new sense of mystery and intrigue that is becoming far more interesting as the episodes go on.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That sounds so logical, it really does!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yay can't wait for the girls to become proper adults. I wonder if their appearances will change dramatically? Chad Lowe is a fantastic actor and very underused in PLL, but I don't know if that's because he's usually directing the show more than appearing in it these days. He has a sense of security about him, and he's quite wise in that he's someone Aria could totally turn to. I'm glad she did in this episode.

I haven't read the press release, what does it say about the decoy?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The only major change happening, I could see with Spencers appearance. Think she won't let the A thing go that easily.
Chad is amazing, he is really different and I agree with U that he gives a big sense of security.
The press release says the girls will go on a hunt for Leslie, that creepy friend of Mona's as she will probably be revealed to have spent time with Charles in Radley next week.

    ReplyDelete
  22. RickyForeverDelena24 June 2015 at 22:29

I hope she appears in every episode now until, at least, the mid-season finale. I wonder if Mona will go to college as well

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ahh I see what you mean now. I always thought she was weird. Not sure how I feel about her having spent time with Charles in Radley as that would point the finger of A being her, but yeah, could be a decoy, a red herring.

    ReplyDelete
  24. She was such a random character to appear at all. But yeah seems like she'll be a red herring but with cleaning her name I hope something will be revealed that gives us a real clue to who A is.

At this point I'm narrowing down my list of A suspects. Here's my top suspects:

    1. Wren - He has been my main suspect from the beginning. History of mental illness in the family, he himself could have been a patient there. Assuming Charles is dead, he could've known him;

    2. CeCe - Her name is here because she is the one who could've taken the game too far and got Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily involved. If Charles' issues were with Alison, then why take the 4 girls down and not just her? Maybe CeCe was jealous of Alison because she their leader, we don't really know how exactly she befriended Alison, and we can place her in Radley (that flashback when Mrs. D caught CeCe dressed as Alison in Radley, for example). Plus her initials match Charles' (C.D.);

    3. Bethany - If Charles is dead and he is being avenged by someone, it could be Bethany (I know she's dead, but we know how things are with this show, right?). Maybe Mrs. D got close to her because she was Charles' only friend in Radley and after his death she just couldn't help but keep in touch with her to find out more about her troubled son. Maybe Bethany isn't dead at all;

    4. Sara - That girl can't be trusted. From the looks of it, she could've been a patient at Radley too. But still not enough reasons to add her as a main suspect;

    5. Toby - Why not? His mom was at Radley probably at the same time Charles was. Maybe he met him while visiting her and they became friends. He still got no love for Alison probably because he never forgot what she did to Jenna (this might be a double revenge then). Long shot, but still, we can't rule him out;

    6. Aria - Because as a guilty pleasure, I'd love if Aria was this twisted person with multiple personalities who took a year off just to torture them all. Also the scenes where she's stalked by A are not as good as the other Liars'.

I can't think of any more A suspects. Aside from Aria being on the list as a joke, I really think it's one of the other 5. I really want it to be Wren but CeCe's name has been popping up my mind ever since I watched this episode, because it kinda fits to the whole story and give us a reason to why using the other 4 girls to get to Alison.

  28. Great episode. Again. I don't think there's much to Aria finding the photo and the files, other than the writers responding to people's complaints about Aria always being so out of the loop on most A developments. She does spend a lot of her time in her own little show. And Lucy Hale did say Aria would be getting more active in the solving of the A mystery. As for Hanna, I'm loving her this season. I always loved those moments when she'd just say 'screw it' and not take what she was being told without proof, and I'm glad they're having her do that more. I'm also happy she's going to be getting some space from Caleb, assuming they'll stick with that. I've never liked Caleb, and hoped he was gone for good, then he came back. Twice. So having Hanna in scenes with less Caleb is fine by me. Always the worst when your favourite and least favourite characters are together so much. As for Spencer, I'm excited to find out exactly what happened in that Dollhouse, and I actually enjoy her storyline with the pills. A lot of shows have characters struggle with this type of thing, and then a few seasons later, they'll have them in a situation where it should arise again, yet not address it. So I'm glad they've been bringing it back up this season, without acting like she's magically cured. For Emily, I agree her story is dragging. Sara hasn't been interesting me much. But I do think Sara is going to be involved as we get more answers, so I can bear with it for now, I just hope the pay off is worth it. I really enjoyed the Alison and Jason scenes, and was happy they kept Lorenzo out of the episode. I have no issue with Alison and Lorenzo as a couple, but this was definitely an episode for Ali to be with Jason, and I look forward to more scenes between them. The Charles reveals are coming each episode, which I appreciate. I still wish we'd have more information, especially since we're basically at the halfway point of 6A, but we've still gotten more in 4 episodes than we sometimes do in a whole lot more. Minor complaints aside, season 6 is definitely proving to be the best. Just keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. A lot of people have been speculating that Sara IS Bethany. Not sure how I would feel about that, but I do think Bethany is a prime suspect. But I think it's going to be a guy, because I don't think Charles is really dead. No idea who, though. But I wouldn't be surprised if it were Wren. I think after the Toby reveal in season 3, it would be a cop out to have him be Uber A. Also I don't know if it would work as revenge for The Jenna Thing, because Toby never exactly cared a lot about Jenna before it. Also, didn't the first Halloween episode show that A was torturing Ali before Jenna went blind, and possibly even before Jenna moved to Rosewood.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for commenting! You're most likely right about Aria, and I love that she's been getting more active in the main storyline rather than sidelining her while the others discovered more. She's really come into her own this season I think. Couldn't agree more about Hanna, and haha yeah Caleb is like a bad rash but I do quite like him, but I can see why you don't :) At least the Spencer storyline is consistent as they are addressing it again and who can blame Spencer for taking this path again? Also hoping the Sara pay-off will be worth it too for Emily's sake. Totally agree about the need for Ali and Jason scenes in this episode - they worked so great together and I love their sibling chemistry. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts, I'm sure season 6 will certainly keep it up :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOVE your list of suspects and opinions, thanks for sharing them here! OMG I didn't think of CeCe's initials also spelling Charles DiLaurentis! Totally missed that, sometimes I can be so stupid!! I'd love it if Toby turned out to be Charles or something as your reasoning makes so much sense and it would be awesome! Aria's a tricky one isn't she, which is why I found her finding some things first to be suspicious but it seems like the writers are just making her more involved in helping out as she's usually a little more useless than the others, but this season she's been on point.
Thanks so much for reading and sharing your amazing thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not sure how I feel about Sara being Bethany myself, but Bethany could totally be a prime suspect. Wren is everyone's suspect I think, I just hope we get more about him as it's torturing me thinking he has something to do with all this but no confirmation yet. And yeah, the Halloween episode "The First Secret" did show Alison get notes and stuff from A before the Jenna Thing. But there's been so many different A's at different points and enemies, who knows where Toby came into the game but it could happen I suppose.

  33. Piper would definitely blow shit up for her daughter - she would have been the one to find them in the dollhouse and kicked Charles's ass! Can't remember the status of the parents but I think divorced because didn't that young guy propose to Ella and she accepted?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I live for Charmed so James's reference literally made my day haha.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If Piper saw A she would blow him up to pieces, that guy hit on hanna. What's with this show and having ADULTS hit on teenage girls? You know what gets me more pissed off about the show not even ADDRESSING statutory rape is that THAT incident with hanna got the show all serious about it. Probably not even that, it was probably just because of aria's mom which if it was it's just IRRESPONSIBLE of the show not to at least discuss it on screen. But with aria's situation they make it seem all "epic" and a "they NEED to be together" thing. It makes me sick and even more glad the show's having a 5 year time-jump so the girls will be legal and the fans won't have to deal with statutory rape. I'll say this: the end of the show better have ezra ROTTING in jail and double charged with that offense, for aria and ali.

  36. Hello again!!! Hello Gavin :) , hello everybody else). I know I'm getting off to a late start but so far (up until the previous episode) S6 didn't particularly impress me. Firstly, Mona was missing. I thought the whole point of bringing her back alive was to actually see her in season 6 (Sorry, huge fan here) and in the first episode that we actually did see her, she was so deeply shaken up emotionally that I hardly recognized her. Although I have to admit that whereas I really want to see her strong and clever solving every mystery, she is due to some trauma from the whole captivity, but one episode, that's it, ok? .. I really liked this episode though Mona or no Mona because there was some actual development and we saw a lot of flashbacks so we begin to understand what the girls went through in the lair. Some quick various thoughts:
    a) Oh Hannah.. why do you break Caleb's heart like that?
    b) No, no, no Spencer.don't go back to the addiction path. You are stronger than that!
    c) More question marks? Who stayed with Charles in Radley? Couldn't it be more simple, like aunt Carol is still alive, we go ask her and we solve the case, even partially?
    d) Has Caleb been working out? Because I don't remember him being so huge in the beginning and so built up... Thumbs up all the way!!!!
    e) Well hello Clark !... Very nice to meet you and I'd like to see you again!
    g) Isn't Sarah the girl who they thought died in Alison's place? Wasn't she supposed to have some girl friends who mourned her death and were devastated from her loss? Where are all her friends now? Don't they remember their story line or it's me who has it mixed up?

Gavin your reviews sustain me. You write amazingly!!!

It has to be Charles, who else can be? Maybe he fake his death and changed his name to Wren...

  38. Aww thanks so much dosia, and hi again, sorry for the delay in replying. Been having a very busy weekend but I so love and appreciate your comment :D

Don't apologise for not really liking season 6 so far without Mona as I totally understand - I was so looking forward to way more Mona when she turned out to be alive (and what an amazing moment that was). I hope she comes back swinging in the next episode but I can imagine she will have way worse trauma than the others.

I love your various thoughts! Spencer is totally stronger than the addiction which is why I think, in the end, she's gonna kick it's ass. Right now she's very vulnerable and she needs to be reminded how strong she is. And haha nothing is ever simple in Pretty Little Liars :P Hmm I forgot about Sara's friends that moaned her - that's another reason the whole thing seems suspicious. And thanks so much again for reading, we have to fight this PLL addiction together (by watching and talking more PLL haha).
