Okay, we see Delphine get shot in the chest. Then again, we once saw Helena get shot in the chest and she was okay. So what is Delphine’s status?

Uhhhhhhhhhh…well, you know, I know this will be upsetting to many fans but the story in our minds has always been a tragic love story. Listen, I didn’t want to say one way or the other. For us, I believe this is a horrible thing that had to happen. And I know that it’s hard and I know that it’s emotional and I know there are going to be a lot of people out there going “WHY?!?” But trust me, this was a necessary move to make. And its necessary in Cosima’s story and it’s necessary going forward in subsequent seasons—in season 4 and season 5.

While we’re talking about whom we might be seeing going forward, Delphine handed Shay that info about Dyad including the 324B21. Will Shay be back in season 4?

If the gods are with us, yes indeed. I’m a huge fan of Ksenia Solo. This character is a bit of a slow burn for us and we’ve got some interesting plans for the character. We’re wanting that relationship to go and we have plans for where that relationship will go. I personally feel connected to them as couple. I like it, it’s fun, and it’s new. [Pauses]And I’m sorry about Delphine.

You go from a four-clone dance party in last season’s finale to a four-clone dinner party this year. Tell me about staging that, which even featured a seamless glass-clinking toast at one point, which I can’t imagine was very easy to pull off.

Once again it was one of our, how do you make something more elaborate, more interesting than before? And how do you top a four-clone dance party? And that is very difficult, by the way. There were all these conversations that Sarah could have a side-scrolling fight like in Oldboy, where clones come at her from out of doors and she just fights them all. And then that ended pretty quickly. And it turned into, let’s have a dinner party! And I liked the idea because it’s almost like the last supper and everyone is sitting around. It began at a point in the episode where we’ve actually climaxed the show and we get to breathe and say, “Okay, the show is kind of over,” so we get to sit and listen to everyone speak and enjoy everyone’s company and move around the table and see everyone and have toasts with champagne. It was just a fun, big new challenge and it was unlike anything we’ve done yet. It’s pretty seamless. It’s awesome to watch but you forget how technically complicated that scene is.

Well, that’s the sign of a well-done scene, because you don’t think about it.

I love watching it because I get sucked into the emotion of it—like Alison’s speech to her sisters, and Helena, and the cheers to Beth from Sarah, which is so heartfelt. You just get sucked into the drama and emotion of it and you forget what you’re watching until it’s over and then you go, “Wait a second. How the hell did they do that?” That was a two-day event.

TVLINE | This felt like a very different finale for the show. There weren’t huge cliffhangers, aside from what happened to Delphine, which we’ll get to. Was that a conscious decision to give the sisters a respite?

Yeah, I think so. The first three seasons, if you put them all together, they barely took a breath. So we wanted to [do] a bit of a reset, put our sisters as close together as possible at the end of the season. It’s been a journey for them. That scene with the whole clone club [at the dinner table] was an important [one] for us.

TVLINE | Her last words were, “What will happen to her?” I assume she’s referring to Cosima.

She was, of course. Her journey this season stemmed from her promise to Cosima in the last season. To me, that’s a true journey of love and heroism and sacrifice. And it’s one we worked really hard on with Evelyne Brochu. When you look at her performance over the course of the season, it’s very dramatic and satisfying.

TVLINE | Was Alison’s speech about the sisters being brave and letting her do what she needed to do a commentary on fans saying that Alison’s storyline is very separate?

TVLINE | Going back to the cliffhanger: Delphine was shot, but was she killed?
I don’t know. Did you see her die?

It’s never separate to us. It’s all part of the complete, complex tone of the show. She’s separated by tone more than by heart. Throughout the season, we spoke about [how] it’s a part of Sarah’s newfound responsibility to carve out that time for Alison to be normal. And Cosima, too. It’s like an agreement. It’s like a victory for all of them.

What led to the decision to have Delphine get shot in the hour, and what that means for the character going forward?

We wanted to make a really strong choice with the character this season, and worked with Evelyne to craft the role of Delphine -- stemming from that promise she made to Cosima -- and to tell a story about true love, but impossible love. As for next season, that remains to be seen.

So just to clarify, will Evelyne Brochu be a part of Orphan Black season four?

I'd love to see her somehow. But the story is going to have to dictate it, and all of the other elements will have to come together. We'd love to, but there has to be a great story reason. God, we wrote that role for Evelyne. We all had a great time working together. We hope the character can loop back into the story, somehow. I don't know, what do you think? More dreams?

Until viewers actually see a character take their last breath, any "death" could be questioned…

That's probably a good idea.

How will the worm-like creature viewers saw play into the science of season four?

It's been part of our unfolding science, and unfolding bio-horror aspect. And bio-tech. Those elements are something we're really interested in. Like [the finale] said, "The science is far beyond what you could imagine.”

By the end of season three, most of the male clones had been killed off. What role will they -- specifically Mark -- be playing in season four?

We'll definitely be seeing Ari Millen next season.

Now that Krystal is awake and aware she's being held, against her will, in a questionable facility, what can you share about what role she may have in season four?

We left Krystal on a really interesting note, which is something we always wanted to do with one of the clones: meet someone who is naive and choose to leave them naive. Choose not to tell them who they are for their own good. Krystal has shown us she's not just a bimbo; she knows something is up. It'll be interesting next year -- what will happen if Krystal does find out who she is? Yeah, we'd like to see Krystal again.

  1. Please just write Delphine out. I'm tired of her stalkery jealous abusive ass.

  2. Evelyne Brochu definitely did a great job throughout the series. I really like how this episode seemed to be about reunions and connections amongst families. Nicely done.

  3. So Castor isn't out of the picture just yet. It would be interesting to see the Leda and Castor clones team up to take down Neolution, the greater enemy in all of this...

  4. Ha! they didn't say she is dead! I am confident we will be seeing Delphine again, even if she is no longer with Cosima.

  5. I don't want Delphine dead, everything she did was for Cosima. Cosima asked her to protect not just her but her sisters as well. In order to do that she had to be in charge, in order to be in charge she had to become like Rachel. She didn't want to be like Rachel, she had to be. Also, when they finally trusted her with information she came through for them, which i would hope would prove how much she loves Cosima, so i hope she's still alive. Also, this doesn't mean i was a fan of the decisions she made, especially when it came to Shay, just that i get why she made them.

  6. Wishes for S4, Delphine is dead, more Krystal, more Mark and Gracie, a lot more Art. Charlotte having a bigger role.

  7. I will always hope for Delphine to be back. Fascinating charcter, wonderful actress.

  8. No, there's nothing really in this show that explains 'she had to become like Rachel. she didn't. Delphine rarely came through for them, Cosima trusted them with information about Shay MAYBE being a mole and Delphine nearly murdered an innocent woman. Sarah trusted her to handle the Castor thing when Delphine told her to stand down and she nearly lost Kira when Delphine fucked off to Europe and left them all unprotected.. Delphine trusted the one doctor you shouldn't trust and lost RAchel.

I don't care if she 'loved' Cosima. If a man did what Delphine constantly did and they had the nerve to write Cosima saying Delphine's decisions were all her fault, this fandom would rip him apart like it (Rightfully) ripped apart Paul and Donnie.

  9. Pretty much the same for me, though I want more Ferdinand and Kira as well.

  10. Yes I love deranged completely pissed off Ferdinand! And Kira is always needed but I'm glad Sarah did keep her safe this season. I want her to meet Charlotte though.

  11. Agreed, keeping Kira safe was paramount this season, so her being kept out of the picture was necessary. But I think/hope that she will be an important part of the puzzle as the show moves forward so I hope we see more of her next season. I love the idea of her and Charlotte meeting, and I'm interested in how she will bond with Helena's children too.

  12. She was a well written role who made bad mistakes and whose jealousy stood in the way of her making the right decisions again and again. At best she was morally grey, and that's putting it kindly. I enjoyed her character on the show, but hated her relationship with Cosima and didn't see her as part of the Clone Club at all.

I really hope that she did die, but I fear that she was only weakened in order to be upgraded, or neolutionised, by Susan.

  13. I wish taht was the case, but I felt like the narrative was trying to tell us over and over that she was right and it was all Cosima's fault the things she did. (We can tell because she hardly takes account for what she did, Cosima does that for Delphine. and thensomehow forgives her for...threatening to make her girlfriend's murder look like a suicide, which is horrific and shouldn't have been taken as lightly as Cosima took it)

I hope she's dead. She's incompetent at best, abusive at worse, and she brings down Cosima

  14. "I really hope that she did die, but I fear that she was only weakened in order to be upgraded, or neolutionised, by Susan."

Your words made me laugh, in a good way of course, because that is exactly what I am hoping for, just changing the verbs... A matter of grammar ;)

  15. I just want to point out i did say i wasn't a fan of the decisions that Delphine made, and i compared her to Rachel, a character that constantly does a lot of terrible things. Also, i don't blame Cosmia for decisions that Delphine made and i never said i want Cosima and Delphine together because i don't. I just don't want Delphine to be dead. Also, their were some moments in the show were if that had given information to Delphine things would have turned out better for them. Like for example what happened in the season finale. As for having to become like Rachel in order to be in charge, in that kind of place you have to be like Rachel or one of the many other twisted people that have been in charge.
