  1. Love triangles get boring after a while.

  2. Nothing, it collapsed in season 1 imo. It just got boring, dragged out and buried in love triangles.

For me it started with Lola getting pregnant with Francis' baby in season 1, but 7 out of 10 from this list work too.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Other - Frary reunion and the fact that Francis is still alive. They should just kill him when he was dying and second season should end with Mary being in Scotland.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's just generally a bad show.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Making the female lead unlikeable always leads to downfalll. And in Reign, the whole love triangle and adultery and everything resulted in that. It's no wonder how low the ratings got. Though basically all reasons here are true. But I'm not surprised that they let Francis survive the season. His death would have basically killed the show in this state.

  7. One word - Conde.

  8. Too much boring and pointless love triangles. Mary/Francis/Conde, Lola/Catherine/Narcisse, Kenna/Bash/Antoine. Less love triangles for season 3 and give me some Lola/Narcisse (these two are pure gold together).

  9. season 2 renewal.

  10. People can complain, but i still enjoy Reign a LOT, 2nd half os Season 2 was the weakest yet, but i still enjoyed it and it got amazing again in last 2 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Other: The ratings fell because of fans' ridiculous expectations of a Frary happily ever after ending for a couple where one half of said couple is destined to die.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Just about everything on this list. Here's to Season 3 getting making the show better. Read a few spoilers to what they have planned next season and it seems really good.

  13. It was almost impossible to choose a single reason for Reign's decline...every voting option was accurate. The show was magic in season one; fairytale love story, clever brotherly banter between Francis and Bash, verbal sparring between Catherine and Henry... season two was dark and depressing. I watched from week to week waiting for a bright moment, but it n e v e r came. Writers ruined everything that was good...Marry changed from pure and noble to selfish and deceptive; francis changed from rakish and dashing to sullen and dour! Bash was a poor husband, constantly running around in the woods; Kenna's a selfish twit. Narcisse is a scoundrel. There is no one to root for, writers have made every character unlikeable!! I hope the writers can turn things around in season three!!!

  14. Ratings were already slipping at the end of last season, the show didnt come back to particularly good ratings after the summer and then suffered the usual CW spring time drop I dont think any of the seasons storylines can be blamed specifically. Its going to struggle next season, Friday wont see it go higher than a 0.2/0.3 in the Fall. I think it could possibly be yanked from the schedule by mid season. Shame as I liked the show through most of season 1.

  15. Mary's rape started the downfall but it's not the main reason. It destroyed the relationship between Mary and Francis because she could no longer trust him (plus Francis lying to her about everything that led to the rape). That's why the frary/monde love triangle even started. Before the affair Mary and Conde as friends were great. We all knew Monde was not gonna really happen and most just wanted to get back to Frary, the love triangle just went on too far.

Than it's to the who Catherine and Henry/ Twin Ghosts thing which was just fucking weird and her with Narcisse was wrong on so many levels. It's like everyone just forgot that Narcisse blackmailed Francis into destorying France and eventually Mary getting raped too (Francis, Lola and Mary too).

Also that every relationship Bash and Kenna, and Leith and Greer were just destroyed too. Mary and Bash got 3 scenes in the entire season. It would have been nice to see Mary and Catherine having more scenes were Catherine supported her, it sucked how Catherine just turned on her.

This was the year Reign destroyed all the ships.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The fact that it never was a good show to begin with. It's writing quality was always on a dissapointngly low level.

It's a style over substance show, if it held more substance maybe people would have accepted the rape-plot as an actual storyline instead of a way to gather publicity.

What was its downfall? Its general poor writing quality

    ReplyDelete
  17. amen to that

its production values are impressive (gorgeous sets and wardrobe) but its writing and acting is attrocious

    ReplyDelete
  18. Reigns renewal trend is confusing as hell anyway...how?!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nothing. The show is still enjoyable and if anyone was expecting it to remain all lovey dovey Frary rainbows and sunshine then they are clearly watching the wrong show.

    ReplyDelete
  20. someone mentioned cbs has a hand in it getting renewed I think.

    ReplyDelete
  21. using a rape to introduce another triangle, Conde not going after the throne for his religious beliefs, and Francis being alive to name a few, though the Francis thing may be remedied soon.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I honestly I loved the second season, I saw nothing wrong and liked the various plots that had, but as my opinion is just one is not enough. I think the main reason is because of triangle between Mary, Francis and Conde,I liked it because I knew it was important for her recovery, but Conde proved a liar disgusting.
Forgive me for what I'm going to say, but give a concert in the couple because you shippa not be together is stupid and childish and that's what most did. The third season will be great centered at the English court and I hope have good ratings.

The "ghost" sl was stupid,& the rape just to punish a another charcter(Mary raped to punish Francis,Lsurie Mcarthy admitted this)& to justify starting a love triangle/an affair.Runing Mary's charcter & making her unlikable, underuse of Catherine& Badh and too much of new characters viewers didn't like-Conde,Narcisse.

  24. I don't think Reign was ever one of those shows that was big to begin with. We all knew after season 1 some people were going.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 14:32

CW seems to support the show and not want all genre shows & Reign is different type of show for them. Its halfway to syndication& CW wants to get it to syndication it's ,a cheap international co-production and until the last month of the season it did decent by CW in dvr (0.7)and it does well in social media and has DVDs,tie in novels to help make money and it has possible international syndication appeal & visual appeal. It did better internationally than HoD and did better s2 ratings than BatB.It probably does well in streaming and was included in the ahulu/Netflix deal for this season( as are all shows this year)so its making money in streaming.Pkus CW likes to give shows with more than two full season a proper ending and get them to syndication & doesn't cancel shows with two full seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agreed. I also think they were too half hearted in making Mary the selfish, fickle person she was in real life because she's part of said ship. Making a ship more important than the characters is never is good thing imo.

CW seems to support it,it's a different type of show for them & they don't want all genre shows. It makes money through streaming-likely does well there-DVD& tatie in novels, until the last month of the season it's dvr numbers were decent by Czw (0.7)& it's a cheap international co production,it's halfway to syndication and Czw never cancels a show at that point cause they want it to get to syndication,it does average international sales but better than HoD and did slightly better s2 ratings than BatB,it does well in social media

  31. From what I understand this is a genre show, people have told me there's ghosts and prophecies and such. I haven't seen it yet myself but that would make it genre would it not? :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 15:38

It's hard to say.It has it's moments of being genre but for the most part,it's a regular drama /historical fiction period soap.

So much this! My sister & I HATE Francis so much, we've been waiting for his death for 2 seasons now!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Once again, You and I are in agreement. : )

I also think 2nd season Mary is closer to real life Mary, and that made her character unappealing for many viewers especially those smitten with Francis. Personally, I find Bash and Narcisse far more interesting.

  35. Ken Marvin Ortega30 May 2015 at 16:20

I used to love season 1 and when I started season 2, I decided to drop it. The storyline was so bad, in my opinion. I just hope that season 3 will be a good one and I'll forget season 2 ever existed.

I hope they focus more on the prophecy of Francis' death and the introduction of Queen Elizabeth. I love some queen fights. Hehe. No more love triangles!

  36. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 16:27

You know you doing something wrong when viewers beg you not to do a certain sl,ratings drop sharply over the season, fans petition for your firing ect.Ive noticed a lot of shows lately fan pander/focus more on ships than character growth/development & plot or they don't pay attention to ratings & what fans want then wonder why ratings fall/fans complain. There needs to be a happy medium.

  37. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 16:31

What?it was doing decent/ok (0.6-0.7) for CW when it was renewed,it won a PCS,was nominated for others,is a cheap international co-production-making it & BatB -cheaper than most other CW shows except HoD,Jane.,did very well in dvr, online, social media,Czw seemed to support the show,It was the fifth highest rated CW show when it was renewed for season two and that typically means automatic renewal. It was doing well in 18-34& W18-34.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just want to forget about second season and focus of show's future. Without that stupid love triangle, Kenna and Leith moping.season three could be at least enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So many reasons come to mind but these three take the cake-
    1.Complete destruction of Mary's character.
2.Dragging out the nonsensical love triangle all season long.
3.Using rape to ignite the romance between Mary & Conde-That's just disgusting!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Victoria Llanos30 May 2015 at 17:57

Probably the fact that they never thought they'd make to a second season, so they didn't plan ahead. That aside, what they did to their main character is the main reason. You can''t do that and not know this will happen. Truth is I doubt season 3 is any better.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Literally everything. There is nothing good about s2, and I find this list terribly exclusive. Where's the "All of the Above" button?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh this! Not only with them changing history but I really want Toby Regbo to play Lord John on Outlander, so let him die so the actor is free lol.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think most of us can agree that Reign would see massive improvements with a new showrunner. Wow, she's an idiot. And you know what the bad thing is? They hired new writers for the third season, but the one who started the rape that turned into a love triangle and made Mary so unlikable is still running things.

I seriously doubt it will get a season four, and they alienated too many people to get those numbers back just because they decided to retcon their stupidity at the end and throw Frary back together way too quickly.

This show is doomed, and it's entirely the showrunner's fault.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it's rediculous that some people think that the rape made the season "downfall" it's a serious issue that happens to women and they were smRt to out it in it supports women around the world

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love reign so much like I don't know why people are so critical it's not like they have to watch it if they don't like it

    ReplyDelete
  46. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 21:26

Yes it's a serious ,real life issue but some feel that it doesn't need to be shown on tv.some people objected to it simply cause it wasn't about Mary's strengths As the show runner said or furthering character growth/development but it was done simply,y to punish a male character-show runner stated this in a interview-and to justify a affair,a love triangle and make the lead character a hypocrite & cheater.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 21:29

If Nikita, zhoD,BatB got fourth seasons for wrap up & syndication purposes getting 0.3s so will Reign.CW will get it to syndication & get it a proper ending.

    ReplyDelete
  48. How did it support women? I'm sick of this BS. Women know that rape happens. We're reminded of it nearly every day.

    ReplyDelete
  49. There's a significant different between those and Reign. The fans were active and very supportive of those other shows, not so much for Reign, and for all of those shows the writers and showrunner were very open with the fans, while Laurie has been blatantly ignoring her viewers entirely.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What DIDN'T lead to its downfall? The writers were in a great place for storylines at the beginning of the season and Mary was now the queen of two countries. Instead, they ignored what was logical and gave us offensive, dumb, insulting, and depressing storylines.

This show last season was FUN. It was campy as hell and I loved watching it. They went way too dark this season and nothing was enjoyable. Every episode I kept thinking it would get better and it kept getting worse.

I still can't believe how badly they ruined Mary. Her storyline didn't make an ounce of sense and her affair with Conde made her unredeemable. Watching her constantly defend and cry over him was beyond embarrassing and I don't understand how the writers expect us to ever root for her again. We went through this crap last season with Bash and her "loving" Francis is so unbelievable now since she's been in love with three different men in a season and a half.

Catherine was my one of my favorite characters last season and this season her storylines included things as dumb as having her sleeping with her husband's ghost. WTF? They honestly couldn't have came up with a better storyline? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Brandy Danforth30 May 2015 at 23:59

That doesn't matter.CW gets Reign to syndication, they make money ,they have more seasons/episodes plus a proper ending to sell to streaming(Hulu/Netfkix), more seasons also means more DVDs.HoDs fans weren't active & supportive, especially midseason two and three.A show runner being open with fans and fans supporting shows has nothing to do with renewals-Forvers fans are very vocal yet it got cancelled.Secret Circle fans were active, vocal years ago when it was on and for a year, year and half after but iwas cancelled and stated cancelled.Reign, like BatB,is a cheap international co production and as such is cheaper to produce than most if it other scripted show except Jane that remains since HoD ended.CW doesn't care if a show runner ignores its viewers or if fans are active,supportive-fans hated BatB s2 & didn't support it yet itgot two more seasons.Fans hated, weren't supportive of HoD breaking up Zade,or Zoe's romance with Joel but it got renewed.CW cares about making money.CW has devolved a habit of giving low rated shows a season away from syndication a short fourth & final season for syndication & wrap up purposes. If ,BatB,doing even worse than Reign in s2ratings wise got a fourth season,so will Reign.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Brandy Danforth31 May 2015 at 00:16

No,theres no difference-all low rated near syndication and all got short fourth & final seasons for syndication& wrap up purposes.CW only cares about if Reign is/can make money ,not if fans are active, supportive or not if show runners ignore fans.If Reign gets a proper ending & eniugh70 episodes for syndication, then a syndication deal. CW will make money on Reign.More seasons/more episodes plus a proper ending to sell to streaming,CW makes money on Reign.More seasons, more DVDs means CW makes money off Reign.CW has devolved a habit of giving low rated third season shows a s-even ones getting 0.2-0.3,even BatB which got overall worse s2 ratings than Reign-a short, fourth & final season for syndication& wrap up.Pkus Reign, like Batzb,is a cheap international co-production so it's cheaper than almost all their other scripted dramas but Jane,Batzb.BatB weren't supportive of s2 yet it got two more seasons,HoD fans weren't supportive is. Mud season two and s3 but it got renewed .

    ReplyDelete
  54. Brandy Danforth31 May 2015 at 02:33

No theres no difference-all are/were third season shows a season way from syndication ,& low rated.CW has a habit of giving shows with three seasons a short fourth final season.CW doesn't care if a show runner is open with fans ect,all they care about is making money.Getting to syndication, short syndication,70 episodes with a proper ending & getting it a deal would make CW money.More episodes/seasons with a proper ending to sell to streaming makes CW money.More seasons more DVDs,tie in novels make CW money..Fans weren't supportive of BatB s2 or HoD s2-3 but yet they got four seasons anyway,

    ReplyDelete
  55. It's because the rape was used to make Mary weaker and less likeable because it kick started the Monde romance, but mainly to hurt Francis - I mean the writers actually said that, the rape was used to hurt Francis, which many find disgusting. If the writers used it to make Mary stronger, but also more vulnerable by obvious reason, whilst we see Francis, Catherine and Conde (not as a love interest but a friend) supporting her it would have been much better. To see Mary grow and be strong despite the rape would have been awesome. Of course she would have her bad moments that's expected, but the entire 2b was "bad moments" instead of seeing her grow. Rape is a very serious and real issue, but the writers used it to start a love triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I MIGHT be able to get behind you on HoD, but the BatB fandom is REALLY obsessively active. They may not have approved of some of the things that happened in the second season, but they started campaigning for a third before the second even aired, and they never stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Francis being alive is the only thing that keep viewers still glue to the show when conde/monde proved to be the reason why fans left the show. This is what I think.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Rebecca Womack31 May 2015 at 09:21

    I didn't believe this is a downfall.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The destruction of Frary was the downfall!! Killing off Francis will be the death of the show!! Do the research and you will see I am right!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Disagree... Way to many Frary fans

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agree.. All they have to do is listen to the fans.. Long live Francis

    ReplyDelete
  62. Well, I quit in the first season. Hated nearly everything about the second half of the first season. I liked Mary and Bash, but they killed that COMPLETELY... even the rekindling of at least a friendship between the two. That seemed to become typical though. The friendships that existed or were formed at the beginning and were the basis of the show sort of all drifted apart and I didn't like the direction it turned. The Henry storyline was one of the biggest turn-offs for me. I think the only thing I did like was Greer and Castleroy, but I know that didn't last and now apparently she's some kind of pimp... (lol???) Neither did Lola and that guy she married. Or Nostradamus and Olivia. Basically nothing lasts on that show... It's nice to have at least some consistency, but it seems as if the characters and storylines are just all over the place and very little character development. Their time jumps didn't help with that. They were massive and skipped reconciliations or left out drama that would have been beneficial to creating character development. Francis and Mary had an instalove storyline that made absolutely no sense to me. I only understood their attraction for the first few episodes really. Well, Francis's attraction didn't really exist as much as Mary's (well, until he caught the way Bash was looking at her while she danced), but Mary of course was trying to be an idealist. Anyway, there was just plenty wrong with the show and plenty of reasons to quit watching at different points. I suppose everyone has their fill eventually depending on what personally annoys them and everyone has their individual tipping point. For me, that was Henry's storyline back in the first season, so I didn't even finish watching, let alone get to the second season. At this point, they couldn't fix it. The show was just written and developed badly and you can't take it all back at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Brandy Danforth31 May 2015 at 14:34

You're right in a way about BatB but remember,s1ended at 0.5-9.6& s2 started at 0.3,below a million viewers-half of its audience lost during hiatus and many quit watching during s2 too& they were very vocal about their dissapintment in/frustration with s2.I mentioned HoD s2-3 cause Wade cheated on Zoe,they broke up then in s3,she returns to town with new boyfriend Joel-both if these WL upset fans & quite a few quit watching.I think knowing Zade was getting back together in the start of s4 is what helped HoDs s4 ratings rise-or at least part if it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The fans? You mean crazy Frary shippers? That's because they are the loudest it doesn't mean that everybody loves Francis and Frary. I am a fan and I want the writers to stick to the history. And Francis is a really bad King.

    ReplyDelete
  65. And then beheaded and Bash needs to Die because he doesn't exist in History.. Lola never had any child and Leith should die because he never existed and Conde was never with Mary in history either! Guess you prefer that then correct???

    ReplyDelete
  66. Bash too!!!! He never existed i history!! Me and my sisters can't wait for him to die too!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yes and kill Bash... Have Mary marry her cousin.. Be imprisoned and beheaded... End of story.. Duh

    ReplyDelete
  68. I want to see the Queen of Scotland in SCOTLAND. I don't see anything wrong with Mary marry her cousin, be imprisoned and beheaded - it happened in reality. It's not like Reign would be the first show with these things. The writers can do whatever they want with Bash.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Watch the History channel then.. Win Win

    ReplyDelete
  70. When you want francis to die to 'follow' history, then you should know that francis died when he's with mary. The fact that you wrote Frary reunion as the reason for the flopped season 2 (which happen only at the end of the season and blatantly being ignorant & refused to accept about all the other reasons) and so against the reconciliation & being bitter & salty about it, could only mean one thing. You never care about history, you care for you SHIP. Monde. You're all for mary going for scotland since if that happen, she'll be going with conde and your ship could be together and fulfilled all you ever wanted of them. But sadly for you the ship has sunk badly. I don't even care if frary took a long time to reconcile or never at all as long as monde is going down the drain. So much for following history. Duh.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well, instead of going for the love triangle (which is a huge part of the storyline) the writers could have gone for politics and other interesting things. Why make conde went for the crown because of his love for mary? Is his love story far more appealing than him going after it because he have issued with how francis ruled his country and because he wants to protect his protestant brothers/sisters? The writers throw that main plot away and make it seems like a petty issue. When the writers wrote a plot line that's basically all about ship and love and love triangle as a major storyline, yes, blame us, the stupid & childish fans for the failure of S2. Blame us for fighting against the rape and the stupid love triangle that come with it. There is just nothing wrong with the writing, just us. Claps for you for being the sensible & the smart fans. :|

    ReplyDelete
  72. Are you aware that people can watch the show and don't ship anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm aware but those fans aren't like you who so blatantly dislike frary for a reason. They wouldn't care much for frary or yelling in everypost how much you hate frary and its fans just like what you're doing.
Owh, do you want me to share your comment here on how you'll stop watching the show if conde dies? And yet here you are acting so innocence and as if you're THE loyal fan who suddenly cares for history. Cut the crap. This is not the first time i saw you commenting and hating on frary.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I like Conde - still it doesn't make me a shipper. I like him as a character. So you can't hate Conde, but I can't hate Francis? LOL
From now I won't reply to your comments. I have the right to my own opinion. End of disscusion.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You can hate francis, as i can hate conde. It's your right. But please don't pretend your intention for disliking him because you're one of those natural stan who 'doesn't care about shipping & wanting the show to follow history bla bla bla' when you're not. And even if you said you're not a shipper, your action speak otherwise. A person who cares ONLY for a character won't be throwing hate for frary/frary fans everywhere. But a bitter & salty monde shipper will do just that.

  79. Brandy Danforth2 June 2015 at 19:10

Well apperentley not cause it got renewed.Reugns cheap to produce too as it films in Canda & is a Candaian co-production so it's cheap enough to withstand low ratings. Its got a third season and most likely will get a fourth too.Remember,CW renewed BatB at 0.3s all of s2& Carrie Diaries with a 0.4,maybe lower in s1 too.

  80. I'm at the point now where I'm not sure if will carry on with the show or not, there are parts of it I do enjoy - like you say, Bash and Narcisse are interesting characters, who get better storylines generally. I'd also add parts of Catherine's arc to that too, and surprisingly I've found Greer's journey entertaining as well, where as she was one of my least favourites in the first year.

The ship nonsense is really starting to drag it down again however, and it's not even just the main characters who are entangled in a triangle, there are at least 2-3 others being constantly stirred up which makes it even more frustrating to watch. Meh!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm sorry to hear that. : (

I still enjoy the show, but I understand it if you no longer do. Catherine is one of those characters that runs hot and cold with me. Sometimes I love her and sometimes I love to hate her. Megan Follows' performances always impress me though. Catherine is a far cry from her Anne of Green Gables' days. LOL!!

I've also found Greer's season two arc interesting, but I always liked her character. Lola is my favorite of Mary's ladies though.

I resigned myself to the shippy aspects of the series because it's on the CW, but I wouldn't mind if the writers toned it down a tad.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I love Megan Follow's performance too, her working with Elizabeth is something I am looking forward to. I'll always had a suspicion that old Liz had a hand in getting Mary tied up in Darnley despite her public wrath at the marriage, for me it was pretty damn obvious that it would cause her downfall! I will probably will continue to watch just to see if they explore this option now Catherine is in league with her, lol. Plus Narcisse has been a great replacement for Henry, I was gutted when Alan van Sprang left the show as he was the main draw for me in the beginning.

The problem with Greer, well all of Mary's ladies really I guess, is that they seem to get tied up in triangles of their own too. I just don't understand why the show keeps putting them in those situations when it seems to be the biggest complaint from most people across the board. I know that giving into fan demands is a bad idea in general, but when you're hemorrhaging viewers it might be an idea to tone down some of the most complained about parts of the show, lol.
