The Originals - Ashes to Ashes - Review

16 May 2015

This episode concludes the second season of ‘The Originals’. Dahlia has finally been defeated by the Original siblings with the help of Esther. Davina is furious at the for ruining her chance to bring Kol back. Cami admits that she has feelings for Klaus. Klaus and Elijah are at odds. Hayley is still trapped under the curse. Rebekah was briefly back into her own body to help out before returning to Eva’s body. She left town to try and find a way to bring Kol back, but not before reuniting with Marcel.

Best return: I’ve missed Claire so much. Maisie did a great job these past few months but I realized this week that there was a boldness missing. Not sure if that was intentional or not, Rebekah could have toned it down being in a mortal body. As sad as I am that her return was only for this episode, at this point I guess it’s the best solution. Both Claire and Maisie have new shows so I guess we won’t be seeing much of Rebekah any time soon. It’s a shame because, at this point, Rebekah is kind of the glue that holds the family together. With her gone, I doubt Freya will be enough to keep the peace between Elijah and Klaus. Klaus really did go easiest on Rebekah. I half expected him to dagger her at the end of the episode. It’s sad that we won’t get to explore their relationship further, because they’ve always been my favorite family dynamic.
Unexpected turn of events: There were a lot of parallels in between this episode and last season’s finale. More on that later. What surprised me was how my opinion of Elijah and Klaus has changed. Last season, Elijah blamed Klaus for Hayley’s death. At the time, I was seriously pissed at Elijah, because in my opinion this wasn’t Klaus’ fault. I also felt that yelling at him while searching for his newborn daughter who was about to be killed may not have been the best timing. This year however, we’re in a very similar situation. Instead of Hayley, it’s Gia who’s dead and Hope is in as much danger as she was last season. This year however, Elijah was 100% justified. I’ve always thought that Elijah has been too forgiving of Klaus in the past, with everything Klaus has done to their siblings. Now it’s clear Elijah will not forgive this so easily. I believe the rift between the two brothers will be a major aspect of season 3. Personally, I hope Klaus finally takes some responsibility for his actions.

Best sacrifice: Last week I said I didn’t get how Esther could be the one brought back from the dead rather than Kol. Boy, did the writers show me. At first I was mad, because I really want Nate back as Kol. And I’m very interested to see how his new relationship with Davina will develop. But after seeing the confrontation scene between Dahlia and Esther, I’m glad the writers chose this path instead. I never realized how much I needed to see Alice Evans as Esther again. I’m assuming this is the last we’ll ever see of Esther and I’m okay with that. I think this was the perfect ending to her character. When we first met her on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ she was trying to kill her children, now she died saving them. I would’ve liked to know what changed for her, or if she would’ve never been able to go through with it.

Best parallel: This season started with Rebekah telling Hope a bedtime story. It ended with Klaus doing the exact same thing. I never realized that that would be the perfect way to end the season. If you only look at those two scenes, you’d think that all that has changed is that Hope has gotten bigger. But so much has changed in between. The season started out with the Original siblings united and trying to find a way to bring Hope home. Now she’s home, but the unity between the siblings is no more.
Storyline that needs to be resolved ASAP: We saw very little of Hayley this week, but what we did see is that she’s absolutely miserable. She looks broken and it’s only been what? A day. When she’s freed from this curse, this is going to have some serious psychological consequences. Cami better clear her schedule.

Best quotesRebekah: "In case the analogy is lost on you, I believe my brother is calling you a hypocritical bitch."
Freya: "Well, my adage holds. Nothing good ever happens in a clearing in the woods."
Esther: "Let me share with you the glorious freedom that I have found... in death."

Season 3: So as for season 3, here are some of my predictions. Davina is going to retaliate. The Original siblings ruined her one chance of bringing Kol back, she’s not going to let this slide. My guess is that they’ll probably build up to this and save the actual ‘war’ for the second half of the season. Maybe by then Rebekah will have found a way to bring Kol back. Freya will hopefully find a way to release Hayley from the curse. Klaus and Elijah will be at odds, that may be an understatement. I read that the first vampire ever sired by the Mikaelsons will appear next season. Now this I find very interesting. There are certain things I’ve been curious about. For instance: who was the first one to turn someone? How did they figure out how to do it? Or was it an accident? So many questions! Hopefully I’ll get some answers next season.

That’s it for season 2 of ‘The Originals’. It’s going to be a long wait for season 3, which will air on a new night: Thursdays instead of Mondays. Hopefully you’ll remember to check back here in October. Until then, let me know in the comments what you thought of the finale.

  2. It was a good finale. I was surprised they pulled out such a strong episode after a really weak set up.
The final scene with the sisters and original trio was so strong. I never understood why they didn't gave us more of Alice Evans in TO. She is such a tremendous villain and damn she was hot in this episode.
I'm happy about the way they concluded Bekah's story (for now). She has to find herself and sadly her path is far away from Nola and she never intended to stay. I hope she finds that man to have a child with and he has to be an evil F, just to keep it interesting. I hope they'll stop with the Kol story, it's freaking annoying. ^^

  3. I agree. I thought this episode was really good and Elijah was not happy I knew that he was not going to be happy what he did with Haley and he was pissed. Liked when he knocked out Klaus "Collateral damage he says and I cant blame Elijah he loves and cares about Haley and he was mad about Gia also. Don't think that Elijah will forgive Klaus and agreed what Becca said Elijah needs to be happy and he deserves to love I liked that Claire was back but upset that she left again I don't mind the other actress also and I like Marcel and Becca. Davina is always mad Elijah did not have a choice they had to save Hope . Loved that Klaus called Freya sister their relationship will be interesting and I like that they all stood by one another. Glad that hope is ok for now. Love the scene with Cami and Klaus and they have not kissed they are perfect together and I loved the Elijah and Haley scene they still care for one another and he will do anything to help her glad there was no Jackson but I bet he wil be back next season. Love the ending when Klaus was holding hope and Elijah came back to be near Hope I wonder what Season 3 will bring. Someone said that Nina was coming to the Originals don't know if that is true. Glad that none of the main actors got killed especially my Elijah. LIttle of Haley what Klaus did was wrong. And my couple Elijah and haley are not over

  5. I loved to absolute look of terror on Alice Evans face the entire episode. She knew she wasn't consecrated anymore so that it was possible to truly kill her. She seemed genuinely afraid and I loved that.

The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of a cliffhanger. I don't think every season finale needs one, but this episode definitely suffered by a lack of one. It felt like an ending they planned for a series finale in case they got cancelled. There needed to be something more at the end to keep people drawn into what happens next. Davina messing around with dark magic with ominous music or something. After Dahlia/Esther's death, it just felt like an ending for the most part, not to the season but to the show as a whole. Yes, there were unresolved stories, but at the same time leaving them unresolved left a bittersweet feeling, and would if it was the true end. Victory, but at a cost, and they could have ended the series then and there and it would have been satisfactory.

So it didn't feel like there was anything to keep me invested until next season, to keep my guessing/questioning. In the first season's finale, that cliffhanger was MAJOR. It got me excited and hyped and I couldn't wait from the day after to the premier.

  6. Oh wow you're right! it's not like they automatically knew how to turn someone, maybe it WAS an accident. Did you like the Cami and Klaus scenes this week? when he apologized since apparently we've NEVER seen Klaus apologize to anyone and the last scene between them?

  8. Both seasons I keep wondering when it's actually going to show the value of family, since it mostly is everyone constantly turning on everyone. Also I still really don't understand what the point is with Cami, I just don't feel her character at all, and since the backdoor pilot I was already sure she was going to be some cheap replacement for Caroline in a way, and when it comes to her relationship with Klaus and their feelings, i wasn't really wrong about that.

I am with you Cami serves no purpose at all in the show. What a waste of my time to see her on screen. Once can fast forward all of her parts and not miss a thing in the plot. Kills me that they keep trying to force her character on viewers.

I feel like the show kinda ended....there was no set up for the fall IMO....very strange....soo unlike the last season.

About the only person that I am caring about is Hope, and what will happen next with her powers.

Hayley's demise kinda makes me think that the actress got another show...it is sooo strange...maybe contracts are up and they had to renegotiate....?

Strange way to leave a show IMO.

I like Hayley....but don't understand why the show would have effectively neutralized her....sucks....

Hayley standing up to Klaus were some of the best scenes ever on the show!

  13. When it comes to Klaus&Elijah fight , i think in contrary that last year elijah was justified at being mad at klaus , cause he was acting impulsively , didn't make the right moves and kept elijah apart from somes alliances that he made and at the end , it was a complete disaster .
But this years klaus wanted to share his plan with his family but elijah drove him away pratically just because hayley told him to. I think that elijah betrayed klaus at a very bad moment , klaus is the principal concerned in hope's protection & elijah forgot that. So this years , i'm 100% team Klaus !

  15. Don't think so I am 100 pecent team Elijah He has always been there and Klaus went to far and Elijah has the right to be angry I like their relationship and I don't want them to be mad at each other forever if Klaus is in trouble I think that Elijah will save him. But I don't want him to forgive him right away. Klaus should have shared his plans and Elijah did it for Hope people need to stop blaming Haley

  17. Kind of sad that Haley is going to be less next season unlike some people I like her, and being a Elijah and Haley fan. Less Jackson is good. Happy to see more Elijah and love Klaus and Cami and some people say that Gia is not dead but she was fried. And who is the new villain
