SpoilerTV Reader Renew/Cancel Predictions 2015/16 - ABC Shows

17 May 2015

Hey All,

As you know each year we try to see how good your prediction skills are in determining which shows will be renewed and which ones will be cancelled.

You can see how we did last season here.

So starting today we're going to be running a series of polls asking you what your predictions are for next season. The remaining networks' polls will be posted during the course of the next week or so.

Today it's the ABC shows. You can find promos, clips and photos for most of the shows via the ABC Menu at the top of the site.

We have a poll for each of the shows airing on ABC this season. For each show you can choose whether it will be renewed or cancelled.

So vote below and let us know in the comments which shows you hope will be renewed, and which ones you think will be cancelled.

NOTE: All of these polls will remain open until the beginning of August so you have quite a bit of time to get your predictions in.

  1. This is always so much fun! I will make my predictions tomorrow.

  2. Yes, I've been looking forward to this (LOL, that's sad)!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I love this!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm surprised that people are so negative towards The Catch.
I cancelled a bunch of comedies, Nashville, Kings of Prophets.

Was pretty mercyfull, even gave AC a renewal next year. I hope the next season will keep the dramatic appeal, but give focus some stronger younger characters. More sex less tears just to appeal a bit younger crowd. But keep the note and way of storytelling.

Can't wait for the Fox and NBC edition, to cancel the ... out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Is AC Agent Carter or American Crime?

    ReplyDelete
  6. My guesses for existing shows : Castle (final season), Nashville, American Crime & Galavant.
Too hard to guess for news shows.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I only predicted Nashville and Galavant cancelled from ABC's existing shows.

    ReplyDelete
  8. OIL is the biggest interrogation. It can either be a success or be a huge flop.

    ReplyDelete
  9. My guesses:

    Agent Carter - Renewed
    Agents Of SHIELD - Renewed

  10. Crime, when I write about Carter I write Carter. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  11. I predicted all new comedies to be cancelled except 'The Muppets' and all new dramas renewed except 'Kings and Prophets' and 'Wicked City'.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I added Last Man Standing and American Crime to the list.

Last Man Standing has a syndication deal, so it's endgame has arrived. It's likely done after this year. American Crime would need a lot of award attention for ABC to consider another season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agreed. If that was an option, I'd likely select that. But in the renewed or cancelled, I leaned cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It is hard, but for the new fall shows, I have The Muppets as most likely to succeed and Of Kings and Prophets as the most likely to struggle as scheduled.

It's tough to call midseason shows because if Of Kings and Prophets struggles quickly, then something would need to fill in there early. ABC would have to make a decision of what gets the call.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If Dr. Ken becomes a success, LMS is certain to be showed the door.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Existing shows :
    - Nashville ratings are not that good but i predict a renewal and it could be used as a bridge just like agent carter or secrets & lies
    - Given how hard contract negociations went this season for Castle, i don't see it coming back
    - abc will produce a new marvel show and Agent Carter will be canceled
    - Last Man Standing is not an abc studios production and with all the powerful comedies abc already has, it'll be cancelled

    New shows :
    - Oil, quantico, the catch, muppets and real o'neals all renewed and maybe wicked city (it'll be used as a bridge so lower expectations)
    - of kings & prophets, the family cancelled along with dr ken and uncle buck

  21. The Most Bubbliest ABC Comedies and Dramas
Old Comedies - Last Man Standing
New Comedies - The Real O'Neals

Old Dramas - AC (Don't ask which one, I couldn't decide b/t them)

    New Dramas - Oil

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like this !!! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hope we do better this year with predicting, we only got an overall 75% score this year as opposed to 80% two years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have a feeling Nashville will get the Revenge treatment and will be announced as it's last season later in january.
For the new shows i see Renewed: Wicked City (it's an anthalogy if AC did it WC can do it too), The Family, The Catch, The Muppets, Quantico.
Cancelled: Oil, Of Kings and Prophets, Dr. Ken, Uncle Buck, The Real O'Neils.
    For the existings shows:

  25. Bring back Forever :P

    ReplyDelete
  26. Existing shows:

Renewed: Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD, Black-ish, FOTB, Grey's HTGAWM, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, The Goldbergs, The Middle

Cancelled: American Crime, Castle (to end rather than cancelled, but same thing here), Galavant, Nashville, Secrets and Lies

Secrets and Lies was the only one I really struggled with here. But I just can't see it doing that well in its second season without the existing cast other than Juliette Lewis. Assuming that it doesn't completely fall apart in its second season, I really hope I'm wrong because the first season was actually a really pleasant surprise - it was a very enjoyable and well done show.

    New shows:

Renewed: Quantico, The Catch, The Muppets,

Cancelled: Dr. Ken, Of Kings and Prophets, Oil, The Family, The Real O'Neals, Uncle Buck, Wicked City

Hopefully I will be getting the next network (CBS) up by Monday so keep an eye out for that :)

  27. I have a question: do you guys usually vote as to what you want to get renewed/cancelled or what you think will get renewed cancelled?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 02:02

Most people might think I'm crazy, but I see Agents of Shield being cancelled next year. It lost 0.7 18-49 between the first and last episode this season, and ended up at 1.3. ABC won't be able to save it "because it's Marvel" if it goes under 1 and ruins every show that goes after it. But I think a new Marvel show will be launched with some Shield characters, like the one they considered this year.
Castle will end because of the actors.
American Crime will probably get cancelled, but you never really know with these anthology series.
Last Man Standing will get renewed based on the success of the new comedies, but as I think they will all fail apart from the Muppets, it should get renewed.

    So for the established shows:
Renewed: Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, The Goldbergs, The Middle.

Cancelled: Agent Carter, Agents of Shield, American Crime, Castle, Galavant, Nashville.

The Family seems to be a good show, but its time slot will kill it. I'm pretty sure nothing will survive after Shield, apart from Quantico.
Of Kings and Prophets looks like a lame Game of Thrones without dragons. Pointless. And A.D. The Bible shows that biblical does not make for good ratings.
The Catch will probably get renewed because Shonda, and because of its good compatibility with Scandal.
I am not being optimistic for the new shows at all, but I already talked about the Family, and Oil and Of Kings and Prophets have nothing to with Once upon a time. And Wicked City is doomed thanks to Shield.

    So for the new shows:
Renewed: Quantico, The Catch, The Muppets.

Cancelled: Dr. Ken, Of Kings and Prophets, Oil, The Family, The Real O'Neals, Uncle Buck, Wicked City.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 02:05

I vote for what I think will get renewed. For example I really hope The Family works and gets renewed, but with its time slot I think it is pretty much doomed, so I put cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Im so unsure with Oil, Wicked City, Quantico, and Of Kings and Prophet its like they can be hit or missess im very uneasy but they all are interesting cause of the different premises none are alike.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Don't get why people are so sure that Once Upon A Time will get a sixth season. The ratings are not that great, and they will keep dropping.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The reason why everybody thinks that Agents of SHIELD will survive till season 4 is not the Marvel affiliation, but because of syndication. ABC/Disney wants the syndication money. They will make a lot more money out of selling the episodes for that than they will from commercials. It's that simple. Actually considering they renewed American Crime this season it is pretty obvious that ABC is making their decisions based on things other than live ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  33. They are right to think you are crazy (your words, not mine). Agents of SHIELD has been renewed for a full 3 season, and that means only one more season tell it's has 88 episodes in the bag, which means it ready to sold in syndication

    ReplyDelete
  34. Secrets and Lies is currently 50-50 in the poll so you are not the only one who has doubts about it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Agent Carter - I think if it does the same numbers as S1 it will be renewed, its a good little show to bridge the gap between Agents of SHIELD (which will also get renewed)
American Crime - Probably not if it continues the way it did this season.
Black-ish - Unless it suddenly collapses, then renewed.

Castle - Renewed if the cast wants to do more
Fresh Off The Boat - Renewed
Galavant - Would be surprised if it manages to survive another season. Want it to but most likely cancelled.

Grey's Anatomy - Assuming those involved want to do more then renewed, maybe for a final season?
HTGAWM - Renewed, this show ain't going anywhere for a while!
Last Man Standing - Cancelled, it would have reached syndication, there is no need for more.

Modern Family - Renewed without a doubt.
Nashville - Give it a 23 episode season and it wil reach 88 eps, enogh for syndication. Could go either way I'm leaning towards cancellation.
OUAT - Renewed. Maybe for a final 6th season but if costs aren't too much then I can see them doing another 2 seasons.

    Scandal - Renewed.
Secrets and Lies - This is a tough one, I say cancelled but a renewal wouldn't be too much of a surprise.
The Goldbergs - Renewed! The 80s are staying.

The Middle - Renewed, maybe for a final season.
    Dr. Ken - Cancelled
Of Kings and Prophets - Cancelled

Oil - Cancelled. Sorry not having a lot of faith in the new shows. Unless any of them get a lot of critical acclaim that could save one of them.
    Quantico - Renewed, I think.
The Catch - Part of the wider ShonaLand, should be an safe bet but I'm saying 50/50 on this one.

    The Family - Cancelled
The Muppets - Assuming they want to do more and its not just a one off then renewed.
    The Real O'Neals - Cancelled

Uncle Buck - I don't know why I think it might be a success. So renewed.
Wicked City - Cancelled unless it becomes a critical darling.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What I think will get renewed or cancelled. I don't care for the ShondaLand shows but I know they will be renewed and whilst I love Galavant I would be surprised if it got a S3.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really hope AOS, OUAT and Agent carter get renewed next year.... one more season of ouat, fourth and maybe final season of aos.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 11:42

Damn it, I forgot it's gonna be in its 3rd season. I just really want it to get cancelled, I'm tired of all these Marvel things, it clearly doesn't work, why keep trying?

    ReplyDelete
  39. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 12:15

Why would you want it to be canceled? Just don't watch. Unless someone is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to watch? In that case give me a sign and I'll call 911 for ya;)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 12:39

My problem is that the ratings are really low, and it should get cancelled, but it's not, because it's Marvel.
It is going to be the lead in to two shows that I am really looking forward to (Quantico and Wicked City), and it is obviously not going to give them a push, so these two series will have to get their viewers almost solely based on the buzz they will generate.
I think it is unfair that good shows are being handicapped by a show that only owes its life to a brand.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The fact that some people voted for SHIELD and The Goldbergs to be cancelled despite being in their third full seasons...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Has any Tuesday 10 pm show survived more than a season because that and the tough competition makes me think Quantico won't survive but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
Of kings and prophets and oil is very unpredictable could do extremely well or worse .
The catch surely renewed its so going to replace Greys if/when the show ends
    The family -canceled

    ReplyDelete
  43. Whatever happened to that competition where we guessed the renewals/cancellations before last season started? Was there a winner?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yep, still being updated :)

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/09/the-spoilertv-cancellation-predictor_12.html

Unfortunately we included a couple of shows that did not end up airing during the main tv season (The Whispers and Mr.Robinson) so we need to wait for the fate of those shows before we can declare a winner)

    ReplyDelete
  45. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 13:15

Well AOS has been on Tuesdays by itself for pretty much it's whole run. It's had to stand on its own being surrounded by shows getting .8-1.1. It's also the highest skewing male show on a predominantly female skewing network. And it's been their best rated Tuesday show (a horrible night for ABC) and the second highest rated show it's the time slot usually only .2-.4 behind NCIS. It's not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The ratings aren't "really low". It averaged ~1.60.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Returning shows
-Agent Carter: if it can do the same numbers it did in season 1, I think it will be fine. Renewed
-Agents of SHIELD: renewed for syndication
-American Crime: I have no idea why this was renewed in the first place, but if it squeezed out a renewal with such low ratings, they can do that again. I can't see the ratings going much better or worse so the critical acclaim will likely be the determining factor. I say renewed.
    -Black-ish: Renewed
-Castle: if the cast wants to do more, they will do more. But given that they have only signed a one-year contract, they will have to negotiate again and maybe they're just done. Cancelled
    -Fresh Off the Boat: Renewed
-Galavant: can't go much lower either, but this doesn't have the acclaim American Crime has. I say cancelled.
-Grey's Anatomy: same as Castle, if the cast wants to do more they will. The ratings will drop to low 2s or high 1s but that will be enough for a renewal. If Ellen Pompeo wants to continue, the show will go on. Shonda solves budget cuts by killing off some characters. Renewed
-How To Get Away With Murder: Renewed
-Last Man Standing: not owned by ABC, already enough episodes for syndication and ratings are low. Cancelled
    -Modern Family: Renewed
-Nashville: Tricky one. It could get the Revenge treatment, which wouldn't surprise me, or be renewed for a final fifth season to reach 100 episodes. I'm going for a renewal.
-Once Upon A Time: It still has room to fall. Renewed
    -Scandal: Renewed
-Secrets and Lies: Could go either way. I don't think it will do much worse than Nashville and maybe it does about the same ratings as season 1. I'm leaning towards a renewal.
    -The Goldbergs: Renewed
    -The Middle: Renewed

    New shows

-Dr. Ken: I can't see this doing much better than Cristela or The Neighbors. Plus, Last Man Standing is fading. Cancelled
-Of Kings and Prophets: The dreaded Sunday 10 pm slot strikes again. Cancelled.
-Oil: Sunday at 9 pm isn't much better. It might surprise me and pull numbers similair to Secrets and Lies, but I don't think so. Cancelled
-Quantico: I really, really want this to be renewed. It's the most anticipated new show for me. However, I'm not as optimistic as everybody else is. It's airing behind low-rated SHIELD and is facing off against Limitless. Quantico will have to survive on its buzz alone and I'm not sure it has enough to do so. I'm going for a renewal, because I don't have too many new shows predicted as renewed.
    -The Catch: Renewed
-The Family: It's the Sunday 10 pm slot again! I think this might do OK, kind of like Secrets and Lies' early numbers, but I'm not sure if it's enough. I'm leaning towards cancellation.
-The Muppets: Does this show really have enough buzz to self-start on Tuesdays at 8 pm? Again, I'm not as optimistic as the rest of you are. We all know what happened to Selfie when it was asked to self-start. This is another show that will have to survive completely on its own buzz. I'm leaning towards renewal but I'm not sure.
    -The Real O'Neals: Cancelled
-Uncle Buck: Unscheduled, but probably cancelled.
    -Wicked City: Cancelled

Personally, I'm really rooting for Secrets and Lies, Quantico, Oil and The Family to make it. HTGAWM is a sure thing, unless it completely falls apart.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Uncle Buck will replace The Real O'Neals in spring.
Also, that obviously doesn't translate into ratings, but The Muppets already has 95k likes on facebook, second after LoT which has 125k. I think it will get big ratings for the premiere at least.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 14:06

Yes but the average doesn't really mean anything. Just look at Once Upon a Time, 2.2 average, but it's been getting 1.7-1.8 for at least 6 weeks.

If you look at the last 4 episodes of Shield, it got 1.5-1.5-1.3-1.3, which is a lot lower than all of the other 9pm shows on ABC, even Secrets and Lies. And at least S&L was pushed to 10pm.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Nicola Moriggi17 May 2015 at 14:08

I agree that ABC was a bit too confident when they launched it and that it wasn't easy for it to survive in this time slot.
Tuesday was a horrible night before mainly because ABC, NBC and FOX were programming comedies at the same time, leading to all of these failing.
As you said, Shield has a male dominant audience, on a female dominant network, so how can it be the lead in to any show if it won't have the same target audience?
Let's forget about the cancellation though, I mainly want ABC to stop pretending it is the hit they were looking for and put it at 10pm, where it belongs with these numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Am I the only one who can't see the polls?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Actually AOS is not that low. The Live +7 puts it in the middle of the pack at 2.7 and 8.67 million viewers. Of course it is not Castle which averages from the Live +7 as 3.1 and 12 to 15 million viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Aryam Manzueta17 May 2015 at 16:47

Uncle Buck will replace Dr Ken; TRO'N will air on Tues at 8:30 and FOTB moves to 8:00 when The Muppets ends (it has a limited run).

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yep, my mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Brandy Danforth17 May 2015 at 17:46

not everyone is aware of syndication.Plus,Mindy Project was cancelled after three full season-though it did go to live on at ahulu. So I think cause of Mindy, people are being more cautious

    ReplyDelete
  56. Cancelled-Nashville,LMS,Uncle Ben,Dr.Buck,OIL,Of Kings & Prophets,The Real O'Neals,American Crime,Galavant,Wicked City.
Bubble Status-Secrets and Lies(Depends on the mystery of the season & main lead)
    Renewed-Rest.

    ReplyDelete
  57. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 21:26

The main reason they don't put it at 10pm is because it's male skewing and that's the hardest audience to reach. So averaging a 1.6 that's mostly males is worth more than averaging say a 2.2 that's mostly female. Advertisers pay more to reach the male demo.

As far is this Tuesday goes, I'm actually pretty happy with the scheduling. From all accounts everyone thinks the Muppets is going to be a hit, which should boost Fresh off the Boat, which will in turn help AOS. So AOS could do better next year which will help Quantico (which I'm looking forward too). I also think Quantico looks like it might skew more male so it should pair well with AOS.

    ReplyDelete
  58. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 21:40

AOS managed to average 1.6 while being surrounded by crap. In fact it's been surrounded by junk that averages .8-1.1 for its whole run. It's the only show ABC has out on Tuesday that didn't totally collapse.

With that said, I actually think Tuesday next year might be decent for ABC. Muppets looks to be a huge hit, which will boost FOTB. That should give AOS its first decent and compatible lead in ever. Which in turn should help Quantico. I think Quantico looks to probably skew more male, so it should pair well with the heavily male skewing AOS. I have faith in ABC's Tuesday lineup for the first time in ages.

    ReplyDelete
  59. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 21:44

True. But Mindy isn't the dvr beast that AOS is. Also, AOS does great with DVD and streaming sales. It's a way bigger money maker than Mindy, so getting it to syndication would seem like more of a sure thing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 21:46

The average most definately means something. It definately means a lot more than putting emphasis on the one time low rating of 1.3. Next year it will premiere to 1.8-2.0.

    ReplyDelete
  61. You clearly have more faith in the line-up than I do. I am skeptical about The Muppets' chances. Does it really have what it takes to premiere huge? I, for one, am not so sure. But we shall see in September.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think the big problem for Mindy is that it wasn't owned by Fox, meaning that they had to share the profits from syndication with the studio - they wouldn't have been that great. Whereas AoS is produced in-house (ABC & Marvel are both subsidiaries of Disney), which means every single syndication dollar stays in-house. As long as you've got a full third season AND you're an in-house production, not getting a full fourth season is very unlikely. I have no idea whether or not that's true for The Goldbergs, but if so, I assume it's also safe (especially as it rates higher than AoS).

    ReplyDelete
  63. STOPtheMADNESS17 May 2015 at 22:18

I think it looks awful. It's not my kind of show at all. The experts are saying they think it's gonna be a huge hit. I just hope they're right so it can boost the whole night and help FOTB and AOS, which I love and Quantico, which I'm eagerly anticipating;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. And how does the renewal of a show you don't watch negatively impact your life, if I may ask? Supernatural is getting a freaking eleventh season when I believe that, story-wise, it should've ended years ago, but I'm just ignoring it instead of complaining about its continued existence.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Secrets & Lies had multiple 1.4-1.5 episodes. It only jumped to 1.7-1.8 in the end. You're selectively picking and choosing the numbers for certain episodes of both shows to support your argument.

    ReplyDelete
  66. It's all about the relative ratings. You don't have to do great, you only have to stay ahead of the competition, which it did this season despite a few low-rated episodes. I don't care for OUaT but if its relative position among ABC's line-up remains more or less the same, it will make it to Season 6.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I won't be watching it either. I am also rooting for Quantico though, my most anticipated show for next season!

It shouldn't at all, AOS is around the 50th percentile of ABC shows if you rank them by ratings.

It was deep in the spring, yet OUAT is a show above the league average. Ratings were frontloaded but it does well, there are three dramas on ABC above it.

I know that, but nonetheless no one expected Fox to cancel Mindy ,even if they didn't own, cause she was a season away from syndication

hope so sooooo much. I want S6 and no cliffhanger S5. What do you mean you don't care for OUAT? You don't watch? Too bad because I love it sooooooo much & it deserves more. It'd be my heartbreak to lose it and I'll fight to not let it happen. We deserve to see a full end. I need no cliffhanger even in S5. Please A&E do.
