    ———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account additional benchmarks including the expected Live + Same Day demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind that results for any sporting event are always approximate.

    ———-

    -Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)

    -Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Vampire Diaries” (CW), “Backstrom” (Fox), “Reign” (CW), “American Crime” (ABC)

    ———-

    Ratings Breakdown:
The aftermath of Patrick Dempsey’s departure on “Grey’s Anatomy” lifted ABC into a tie with CBS for tops in the household overnights. A two-hour installment of the veteran medical drama was above average at a 7.1 rating/11 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was four percent above the 6.8/11 for a one-hour (9-10 p.m.) installment on the year-ago evening. But failing lead-out “American Crime” did not benefit with a third-place 3.1/ 5 in the 10 p.m. hour.

First overall for the evening, as always, was sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS at a 9.0/15 in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. half-hour. But lead-out “The Odd Couple” slipped to second with a 5.5/ 9 at 8:30 p.m., which was a loss from “Big Bang” of 39 percent. One year earlier, former time period occupant “The Millers” had similar retention with a 5.9/10 out of a 10.3/18 for “The Big Bang Theory” (on 5/01/14).

“Mom” on CBS concluded its sophomore season with a second-place 5.4/ 9 at 9 p.m., which may not be enough to remain as the time period anchor next season. And it led into an encore telecast of “The Big Bang Theory” at a 4.8/ 8 (#3) at 9:30 p.m. Older-skewing crime solver “Elementary” capped off the night for the Eye net with a dominant 4.7/ 8 from 10-11 p.m.

On NBC, an encore of “The Blacklist” (#4: 2.1/ 4 at 8 p.m.) led into a second-place 4.6/ 7 for the original telecast from 9-10 p.m., which placed third in the time period. And it led into a 10 p.m. edition of “Dateline” at a second-place 3.5/ 6 at 10 p.m. While “The Blacklist” has lost considerable steam since moving to Thursday, it is still a vast improvement over anything NBC has aired in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour in years.

Elsewhere, Fox opened the night with veteran “Bones” at a third-place 3.0/ 5 at 8 p.m., followed by the season-finale of freshman “Backstrom” at a 2.0/ 3 (#4) from 9-10 p.m. Given the lack of interest all season, chances are this was series-finale of “Backstrom.”

The CW closed the night with fading “The Vampire Diaries” at a 1.1/ 2 at 8 p.m., which was 15 percent below the 1.3/ 2 one year earlier, followed by sophomore “Reign” at a diluted 0.7/ 1 (#5) at 9 p.m. The CW should really rethink that third season renewal for “Reign.”
