NCIS - Troll - Review: "Kicking off the season-ending arc"

2 May 2015

NCIS started its season-ending arc last Tuesday, and it involves terrorists recruiting teens via the internet.

A couple at a restaurant is nearly hit by a car driving into it, and the woman inside appears to be dead. The deceased is identified as Navy Ensign Janine Wilt and she was stabbed in her neck. A lot of her information is classified, but she does have a shirt from a nearby high school in her car. It turns out Wilt volunteered to coach the girls' basketball team. McGee learns that Wilt worked for the office of Naval Intelligence as a Cyber Warfare Engineer and Gibbs later learns from her C.O. that she was working on a Columbian drug ring. To decrypt her laptop, the team gets assistance from agent Ned Dorneget, now with the NCIS Cyber division. Dorneget discovers a lot of protection on her laptop, and discover that drug trafficker Alfredo Montez created a secure messaging system for the drug cartel. However, it turns out Montez' computer was hacked.

Meanwhile, Abby discovers that Wilt's killer was in the back of the car during the entire drive. Dorneget learns that Wilt remotely accessed a computer belonging to Adem Faruk Korkmaz. Korkmaz is a businessman for import and export, but when trying to get a warrant for his computer, the warrant is denied. Apparently, the NSA is interested in Korkmaz because of his business with Turkey. Bishop asks Jake for the laptop, but he can't do that. The next morning, however, he gives Gibbs a hard drive from the laptop. Dorneget and McGee find out that the Korkmaz was in a chat room. He denies going into a chat room, but recognizes that the username of his daughter Layna is among the chat room members. Layna was part of the basketball that Ensign Wilt coached.

Layna says she joined a chat room and was later invited for another one. However, that chat room was filled with hatred against everything so Layna quit. She then started to receive threatening messages and asked Wilt for help, who blocked the chat room. Layna recalls the username of the person who invited her for the chat room and that he was angry when she left. This turns out to be Bradley Simek, and his late father owned the murder weapon. Bradley makes a run for it when Tony and McGee come to pick him up. They also deduce that he has made a bomb with his 3D-printer and gunpowder. The team finds Bradley in a bus filled with passengers and they surround the bus. The passengers safely leave while Gibbs tries to talk the kid out of blowing himself up. However, even though Bradley claims he didn't kill Wilt, he blow himself up anyway.

Elsewhere, it is revealed that Jake and Gibbs have spent quite some time together and are even becoming friends. Jake does have some issues to work out with Bishop though. During the case, Bishop really pressures Jake for Korkmaz' laptop, but Jake says he can't give it to her. He can see something is up with her, and Bishop reveals she shot a man last week in Kabul. Jake is stunned to hear about this and says their marriage changed when she joined NCIS. The next morning, things are not quite well between the two as they almost completely ignore one another. They clearly have some issues to figure out.

Obviously, this episode was just the beginning of an arc that will go to the season finale and hopefully beyond. This episode was a good way to kick things off on that. It started with a distraction as the focus was on the Columbian drug ring, but later we came to the real purpose of this episode. I must say it was a bit confusing with the drug ring and all the technological stuff, but in the end it all made sense. The episode was a pretty fast-paced hour, but also made room for personal character moments. The fight between Bishop and Jake was another great moment in Bishop's character development. I like the fact that they addressed her first kill in Kabul and it's interesting to see how things have changed between Jake and Bishop after she left NSA to join NCIS.

As I wrote, this episode was just the beginning of the arc so there are some things left over from this episode that I hope will be addressed over the next two episodes. Bradley said he didn't kill Wilt and while I'm not sure I believe him, it is obvious he is not working alone. How many more teenagers have been recruited? And what have they been recruited for? More importantly, who is behind all this? Clearly there is some terrorist organization here, but to what extent? Are they foreign or domestic terrorists? If the press releases of the next episodes are any indication, this terrorist group is working on a global scale. Recruiting teens via the internet is a method that is currently being used by various terrorist organizations so the story of this arc is pretty believable. The story will continue in next week's episode and it will involve a pretty significant death.

What did you tink of "Troll"? Do you think Bradley killed Ensign Wilt? Were you shocked that Bradley blew himself up? Who do you think are behind all this? How far-reaching is this terrorist organization? And lastly, who do you think is going to die in the next episode? I would love to hear your opinions and theories in the comment section below.

The next episode, "The Lost Boys", airs Tuesday at 8/7c on CBS. Watch a promo for the episode below.

  1. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this episode, and your predictions as to the big death next week. Will it be a minor character like Dorneget? Will it be more of a recurring character like Fornell? Or will it perhaps be a (previous) series regular like Ziva, Jimmy, Bishop, Vance or anyone else? Speculate around!

  2. Poor Dorney is going to take a dirt nap

  3. Seeing NCIS's record of killing off women gives the organization a bad environment for potential female recruits. I hope it's not another woman.

  4. It's been revealed that behind all this is a international terrorist group named "The Calling". Because the promo advertise the killer ending, I expected that Bradley blew himself up, but I don't think he killed Janine Wilt.

I think that Dorneget will be killed. He and McGee are traveling to Egypt and there will be an explosion overseas. Mcgee is not going to die as he is stepping out of the airplane with the coffin in this promo. + Dorneget is not in the guest cast for next episode 12x24 "Neverland".
It's so obvious that I wish for a big twist like two deaths...
But fortunately, none of the characters you named will be killed anytime soon.
Fornell and Vance are safe because of their kids.
Bishop, despite some hate, has so much more potential as a character.
The producers went through too much work with a baby story to kill Jimmy off.
And finally it would be so stupid to bring Ziva back just to kill her. Glasberg was always saying that they didn't kill her just to put door open for her return.

I love everything about Jake. He makes Bishop more interesting. I like Jake and Gibbs friendship too. And if something really happens to Jake in further seasons it will be personal to Ellie and Gibbs.

  5. Dank je DaniƩl, yes loved the episode, Don't you think the drugline was a mischief of N.I her C.O gives that info, so they are prop. on the wrong track. NCIS discovers the real thing?
Don't think the boy isn't the one we saw him walk into the gym, bringing Gibbs & McG looked cool, what about the principal of the school both are connected to it.? Don't know what to think of the growing friendship Gibbke maybe S13 reveals some? I'm afraid we will see Dorny go.Curious how the CIA agent will be, most collaboration are strained.

  6. What a hit Gibbs recieves when the boy goes, almost burning looks worse than the hit on? (Dorny?) can't see wounds maybe only the stresslevel.

  7. I don't hope so either. But there are more male candidates for the fatality than females. The show has already killed off most female recurring characters and there are only two female series regulars. So I think it will be a man this time.

  8. Yeah, I have read the press releases and this group is called "The Calling". I too expected the kid to blow himself up, especially after seeing the phoof of Tony lying on the ground.

Dorneget seems the most likely candidate, but I am still not sure it's him. I thought various interviews/previews said the death happens at the end of episode 23 so if it's Dorney the scene with the coffin can't happen before that. I also wouldn't hang too much weight on the guest cast for the press release as I am 100% certain that guest list is incomplete. The guest cast for this episode was incomplete and so is the guest cast for episode 23 I assume. It usually happens at the end of the season when the press release gets out before the episode finishes shooting. Just look at the final episodes of seasons 10 and 11.

I will be a bit disappointed too if it's Dorney, the death would seem too overhyped for that. Well, we'll know this Tuesday.

And I agree, Jake is a great character!

  9. Yeah, Gibbs seemed close to the explosion but I am sure he will be fine. Dorney might not be after next episode.

  10. I think the drug ring was a distraction for the team and the audience (except those who read the press releases of the next episodes). Maybe someone at the school is involved, possibly the other coach? I have no idea but I am looking forward to learning more about this terrorist group.

Dorney seems the most likely candidate for the significant death, but I hope to be surprised. I guess the CIA collaboration will be rough.

  11. If you look closely on this promo, you will see that Gibbs has his arm wounded...

  12. Well, maybe the explosion will not happen in the final minute. So the ending will be the sad part whit coffin in McGee exiting the airplane. That I guess is possible...

Yes, you're right, the guest cast didn't include Mimi Rogers and we know for sure that she's in the episode. On NCIS:LA they put "TBD" as "to be determined", but here they didn't, so I just thought there won't be much guest actors in the episode he he.

BTW I was hoping to see Mimi Rogers in the promo. But they only make short 20 sec. promos now... I don't know why ;(.

  13. Yes thought I saw something at the start of the promo, Love Mimi Rogers, think Harmon likes to do personal scenes with familiar actors or maybe he likes to give back so I'm curious
