The Vampire Diaries - I Could Never Love Like That - Review

20 Apr 2015

I'm finding that I actually hold this episode in higher regard the more I reflect on it, as opposed to the somewhat underwhelmed impression I had while watching it.  Maybe I'm still so disappointed by Nina Dobrev's announcement of her departure after this season that the many hints to Elena's desire to be human and Damon's inevitable reveal to her that he has the cure were saddening to me.  On the other hand, these references also felt awfully forced and telegraphed in places, which would have irritated me anyway.  It's hard enough to imagine the show with no Elena without the writers starting to indicate this inevitable outcome in such a maddeningly obvious manner.  But while I might not have loved that part of the episode, there was plenty to enjoy elsewhere, from Dark!Steroline's continued romp of terror and snark, to an Enzo subplot that actually clicked quite well, and a nice turnaround to Stefan's state of inhumanity.

Mama Salvatore: her limitations and possibilities: I'm really finding the character of Lily to be a highly fascinating and rewarding addition to the show, not only for the intriguing new  context given to Stefan and Damon's past, but also as she herself is quite interesting.  Take, for example, her multi-tasking a horrifying Ripper massacre and giving Enzo a second chance at life on that ship back in the day.  Then there's her apparent sadness regarding her inability to reconnect with her love for her children, though she can certainly feign it with heartbreaking realism when she is forced to in order to save Stefan from himself (which she only does to rescue her creepy brood of friends from the 1903 prison world).  Lily is certainly a mysterious and complicated character, and her texting attempts were downright awesome ("Dearest Elena, I hope this finds you well...")

I thought that the scene of Lily speaking loving words to Stefan, which were put in her mouth by Damon, and then those words actually causing Stefan to turn his humanity back on, was the most poignant and deep one in this episode.  There's so much going on there, from Lily's bizarre inner conflict and inscrutable blend of sensitivity and coldness, to how well Damon knows Stefan and how greatly he longs to bring his brother back from the abyss.  At first, just as when Caroline got Stefan to switch off his humanity, I wondered if Stefan was faking it when he switched it back on.  I was convinced that he was being honest, however, by the time Damon offered Stefan a night to collect himself before looking for Caroline and Stefan replied "I don't need a night.  I'll find her."  Even as someone who doesn't particularly ship Steroline, I must say that was a wonderful moment reflecting the depth of Stefan and Caroline's relationship and how nice it is to get the real Stefan back.  I liked the way that scene was constructed, with the reflection of Stefan's face in the window telling us volumes about his weary feelings and yet his firm resolve to save Caroline from herself.

In order to convince Lily to overcome her emotional block regarding Stefan and coerce him back into the light, Damon had to hand over the ascendant.  As it turns out, this was an even riskier move than it seemed at first, since we got an all-new insight into the nature of Lily's beloved buddies back in 1903-land by the end of the episode.  Yep, a gaggle of vampire-witch terrors who will surely wreak plenty of havoc if Lily springs them loose - a promising premise for an end-of-season crisis.  That jailbreak seems inevitable, but what about Kai?  His fate seemed grim enough when last we saw him, but I want him back big time!

Stefan didn't need to take a night…but Damon did, as he continued to hesitate in telling Elena that Bonnie gave him the cure for vampirism.  It was so sad to see Elena yearning for a human life she can never have, with Damon knowing he can give that to her at the cost of their relationship.  Elena's reaction to Jo's pregnancy announcement was bittersweet, leading her to ponder the endless lifetime she has stretching before her, not only with regard to her not being able to have the family she wants, but also that her lack of aging will eventually force her to move before the Mystic Falls residents start to wonder why the local doctor doesn't look a day over 20-something.  Plus, Elena's being a vampire totally makes Matt resentful despite his instinctive affection for her, but I honestly could not care less about that, or Matt's ceaseless whining.
More on Stefan and Caroline: This is a fairly detailed and thought-provoking storyline, given that no matter how funny and badass Stefan and Caroline's antics were (first murder, then karaoke, and you will sit there and listen to Caroline's performance, or else!), it's hard to avoid feeling somewhat horrified by the idea of how Caroline will feel when she flips her switch back on.  Stefan, at least, has been down this road before, but Caroline's likely going to face a hard journey back to finding peace with herself when this is over.  That said, these scenes were terrific, from Candice Accola getting another chance to show off her singing chops, to the absurd showdown with Caroline quizzing Matt and Tyler on their knowledge of her, with the threat of killing whoever answered incorrectly.  Of course, given how whipped they both were and Caroline's control freak tendencies, both Tyler and Matt were still quite knowledgable in Caroline trivia.  But while Matt was just trying to make it through the next five minutes, Tyler decided to be more proactive and fight back.  I know it's kind of a no-win scenario, but was Tyler seriously going to kill Stefan and/or Caroline if he could?  That's hard to believe.  Tyler paid the price for his tempestuous behavior when he accidentally stabbed Matt and faced not only the possible death of his friend, but also the threat of going all wolfy again.  I'm not surprised that Michael Trevino won't be back as a series regular next season.  After a somewhat more promising start to Tyler's storyline at the beginning of Season 6, the writers seem unsure of what to do with him aside from dangling his possibly going back to being a werewolf, which is nothing we haven't seen before.
Enzo, Sarah, and some long-needed backstory.  I thought the explanation of Enzo's past with Lily was entertaining, and rewarding since it finally pulled Enzo back into the same story as the rest of the show rather than off in his own weird, tangential, vendetta-against-Stefan mess of a subplot.  In fact, it was very cool when Julie Plec actually acknowledged on Twitter this week that the writers had made mistakes with Enzo this season.  Now that they've seen the errors of their ways, it's not too late for them to make Enzo relevant again, and this week's episode seemed like a step in the right direction.  I also like the relationship between Enzo and Sarah, and how she seems to somehow bring out his better qualities.  I don't know if we'll see more of these two interacting, or how large of a role Sarah will possibly play in future episodes, but I wouldn't mind seeing more of either.  Plus, Enzo's rapid-fire recap to Sarah of how Damon was now actually less bad than Stefan was comic gold.

As is usually the case by the time we get this close to the end of the season, things are ramping up for some crazy plot twists and shocking cliffhangers.  Damon and Elena are at a crossroads in their relationship that will likely play into how the latter exits the show (meh!).  Stefan has a major undertaking on his hands in trying to restore Caroline's humanity and deal with the aftermath - and the set-up for this situation looked fabulous in the preview for next week's episode.  There are plenty of rumors swirling about more revelations to come for Enzo, so that should be intriguing to watch out for.  And the possible return of Lily's witch-vamp friends sounds like enough to keep everyone busy.

Glad you enjoyed the episode! While the Elena parts made me feel a bit melancholy about Dobrev's impending departure, the rest of the hour was mostly quite good.

  3. A great episode and a lovely review.
I agree on U on everything but the fact that the Elena cure storyline feels forced. Yes it is convinient that Jo is pregnant and that just now Elena i thinking and longing for a human life. But I think that is part of every vampire's life, especially for someone who had such a deep connection with her own family and lost it at such an early age.

Overall a tremendous episode, loved the Lily-Damon interaction, it felt honest, real and truly disturbing. Can't wait to see what the interaction between Lily and Stefan will look like.
I assumed that Damon would have a bigger role in bringing Stefan back, that scene was brilliant.
The Heretics sound intense and I can't wait for them to come to town.
    Can't wait for next week.

  4. my thoughts:
Stefan and Caroline - this was the final straw for me. the writers have once again proven that Stefan is only there for Caroline to shine. Stefan's ripper alter ego is one of my all time favorites, he was amazing with Klaus and fans have begged to see his return, I still remember the excitment last season when a promo made it seem like the ripper would be back. and now paired with Caroline he was absolutely horrible, not even a little scary and did nothing but follow Caroline around and get his ass kicked by her. this season has done a fine job of erasing any sentiment I had for Stefan with this stupid romantic plot. also Stefan saying he doesn't need a night, no surprise there, since he blamed himself in the first place for Caroline shutting off her humanity (stupid stupid stupid).
Elena - I love Damon. I don't love Damon. I like being a vampire. I don't like being a vampire. enough already! what an awful last season for the most important character.
Lily- I'm going to reserve judgment at this point. I think there's still more layers to Lily we haven't seen yet, but so far she's a little boring. the I don't love you part was heartbreaking though. and seeing her troubles adjusting to the 21st century is fun.
Enzo - was surprisingly not annoying in this episode. it was very nice to see what he was like before he turned into a vampire.
Matt - I really hope they know what they're doing there, Matt and hate really don't mesh well. is this how he's going to say goodbye to Elena in a few?
Damon - I hate what Elena not remembering has done to their relationship. when Damon is insecure he usually can't wait to turn it around on people in a fun way, make snarky comments, get mad and do something stupid in a-this is who I am. deal with me. kind of way. but now he's withdrawn and brooding. his reaction to Lily saying she doesn't love him was meh.
    Bonnie - WHERE IS SHE?
Heretics - I really don't like hybrids. can't say I find this idea very appealing. but we'll see what their heresy is all about.
overall another weak episode in a very weak season. the only thing I'm still looking forward to is Kai and Bonnie.

  5. Great review!
I've enjoyed dark!Steroline though I'm glad it's coming to an end. This storyline has been one of the best of the season.
Enzo's past was very interesting. I think his storyline will have more sense now that he has a connection with Lily. That's great because I really like Enzo and his "vendetta" against Stefan was ridiculous.
And you're right, the writers are being a little obvious with the cure. Yes, Elena is going to take the cure, we already know. There's no need of repeating it so much.

I see your point about Elena; I'm just a little bitter and in denial about Nina leaving, lol :) Those scenes just made me so sad. Agree on the Lily, Damon, and Stefan aspects, they are really fascinating to watch interacting and I'm looking forward to more. It will be awesome to see the Heretics in action and hopefully Kai will be with them!

Awesome observation about Lily, Enzo, and the lullaby - a very solid clue about the two characters' possible past involvement. Excited to see that play out and get more details. Your theory about Elena's exit makes a lot of sense, but I hope they have her leave town instead of die (not that death means she'll never return, as we've seen before on the show). I wonder if the flash forward could be of Elena living a normal life as a human through the years? I wish they'd leave it more open-ended. Even if Nina plans to never appear on the show again, she might, and I hope she will, change her mind about a possible final episode appearance.

I totally agree on wanting more Bonnie (I can't stand it when she's not in the episodes) and getting Kai back asap!

  9. Impressive episode although the "regrets" Elena has over losing her humanity only now could have been been a little more subtle than I would have liked.

  10. Virginia Fontana20 April 2015 at 13:47

Thanks! As much as Steroline were entertaining without their humanity, I'm also ready for the real them to come back and was relieved to see Stefan return to his normal self. I love the way the Enzo and Lily connection is helping the character move on from the previous, really bad Stefan vendetta storyline. I'm sure the enmity between Enzo and Stefan will return in some form, but it was being dealt with so shoddily before that I shudder at the thought. I do understand and appreciate Elena's feelings and Damon's conflict, but I've been annoyed by the cure's return since it was first mentioned, and it seems like an overly predictable way to exit Elena.

  11. Virginia Fontana20 April 2015 at 13:49

Yes, I agree. This would be annoying to me regardless of any further clues to the character's exit, but now that we know Nina is going, it's just too over the top predictable. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us in the season finale...but I'm also not sure the news of her departure was meant to come out until after the finale, so maybe that was the intended surprise. Hmm.

Nice review as always, Virginia. The Elena exit buildup scenes felt very forced to me too. If Nina weren't leaving or I didn't know about it, the same scenes wouldn't have struck me the same way. The difference between guessing what scenes MIGHT be leading up to and knowing EXACTLY what they're leading up to destroys most of the drama for me.

My favorite sequence, which was handled so beautifully by the director, was Damon's coaching Lily so she could attempt to trigger Stefan's humanity, right through Stefan turning it back on and tearfully hugging her. How right Emily was - Stefan's heart is too tender and good for him to easily accept his vampirism and especially his being a Ripper when he loses control. I liked that Lily showed she isn't totally heartless by sharing that the Ripper is inside her too and she passed the tendency on to Stefan. I wonder if that knowledge will lighten Stefan's burden somewhat.

I loved Damon for doing what he did for his brother. He'll never tell Stefan anything that would tarnish Stefan's memories of and love for their mother; Damon will bear all the hurt himself to protect his baby brother. That makes my heart turn to mush. These types of actions don't flow from Elena's urging Damon to be the "better man". They flow from love. That's why I always maintain that this series is about the Salvatore brothers and their love for each other. Their actions, not their words, have proved that over and over since Season 1.

Thank you! I love your points about Stefan and Damon, and agree about Elena too :)

I agree that Joy Haldar's observations are always worthwhile! I feel that Elena should die because of the closure factor. A believable death would, I think, allow us to move on without constantly wondering when or if Elena's going to pop back up. I don't mean that memories of her and her previous existence should disappear from TVD; that wouldn't be realistic. But I don't think her "ghost" should be part of the rest of the series. I'd like to see the show make a clean break and stick to it. The future will play out as it's supposed to.

I may be alone in this, but humanity-less Caroline became too much for me. Too manic, too cheerful, too much a "twirl your mustache" villain. I love Candice so I'm surprised at myself but I absolutely wanted to shout to her, "Are you insane? Enough already with the no-humanity stuff!" during last week's episode. I guess I'm taking the long way around to say that she was really beginning to get on my nerves!

The only part that I didn't like, were the Elena scenes because the news of her leaving, kind of tarnished her scenes for me, and now the main plot point of the season finale is blatantly obvious. I wish the crew member who spoiled it on Twitter got fired. It would've been much more surprising in the finale if that wouldn't have happened.

  17. The strongest part of this episode for me appears to be similar to yours: Stefan's humanity being switched back on. It was Lily saying the words, but it was all from Damon who knows just the buttons to push to bring his brother back from the edge. I agree with Vampires Forever in the thought that to me, and apparently Vampires Forever ;-), that this is a show about the Salvatore brothers. It will survive without Elena, and if handled correctly (always iffy) could become stronger.

I too give Ms. Plec credit for admitting that they mishandled Enzo's storyline. It's not easy to admit mistakes in such an open forum, but she did.

I see your point about no-humanity Caroline. I think too much more of her would have been overkill...hope Stefan gets her to turn back to her regular self in the next episode.

I did catch that Lily was singing a lullaby to Enzo, but suppose it was simply one she sang to those adorable babies we just know Damon and Stefan were? It seems a far leap from singing him a lullaby to their having interacted in the past. You know - like sometimes a cigar is just a cigar? LOL

  20. Not in the TVD world, they're not.In predicted in episode 6 that Enzo dying of Consumption would definitely tie her in some way with him considering Lily had the same ailment.I also predicted Jo being Kai's sister pretty early on,same for the return of Mama salvatore when they suddenly started to drop hints all around. So,trust me when i say this, their SL is not just that simple.BTW,if you've read malarkey's THR interview, you'd know that he told that What Enzo thought happened that night he turned and what actually ended up happening in reality is completely different which will get revealed in episode 19.So,i'm not saying something as random as mother-son theory but there's some missing pieces from the puzzle.

I agree with you very much about the beyond major spoiler of Nina's leaving. See my comment above about this. In fact, judging by other comments It seems many of us agree. But given today's vast and powerful communication abilities it seems almost impossible to me that her departure could have been kept under wraps until the season finale. Somehow, someway, it would have gotten out sooner or later. I just wish it hadn't.

  22. I will miss Elena as well, but the show so far has convinced me it can be good without focusing on her, even though she is the main character. But seems like fans can't accept that and will drop the show when she leaves or even before that (looking at the ratings).
With those last couple of episodes VD brought itself back into my great grace of favorite shows.

Amen to that, and I'm pretty sure Stefan WILL bring her back this week so she can begin dealing with her inevitable shame and regret for her actions and her grief for her mother. I did read that she begins making amends to her friends.

  26. Damon getting Stefan's humanity back was the highlight for me. If Damon didn't feed her those words and coach her, she would've been screwed. And I'm Sooo glad he got his humanity back b/c iI need Caroline's humanity back on!!!

I lovedd that Stefan, (even with his humanity off stuck by Caroline this whole time. Lol I loved your "listen to her sing or else." Hahahahaha so true. Even with his feelings off he still cares I love it. The other highlight for me was that Stefan said he didn't need a night and didn't hesitate to go find Caroline. That was a huge moment for him! The old Stefan would've be wallowing in self pity wanting to stay away from everyone regretting every little thing he did saying how much of a monster he is. But this time, he seemed to just put all that crap aside, and said, "Caroline is my main concern, I've accepted what I've done. Now I have to get my girl back." Hahahaha. I think she's really changed him, and he's really grown. I really liked that line, it was refreshing, it was refreshing b/c it was surprising. And I am Sooo rooting for him to get her back. This has gone on long enough. I want Caroline back, and I can't wait to see how he does it. I'm desperately waiting for the words.

As for Elena..Smh I just can't with her anymore. The aannouncement ruined me, I just can't get invested in anything she feels/says. They're just prolonging this cure business and everything seems soo contrived!!! I swear it's like Final Destination!! Like ohhh, you went bowling, and the signs were there, and it was your turn, and you rolled the ball down the aisle, you hit some pins, somehow one of the pins goes out of control, and flies towards you, bashing you in the head til you bleed to death and someone at the end of the aisle starts sreaming. UGH! At this point, it's like just cut all that crap out and let her "bleed to death." Damon just do it, and stop stalling. smh It's so upsetting.

Nice review. I didn't care for the episode much either. I found it boring. Only bits and pieces i liked, and the most entertaining part for me was the reveal of the heretics. Wish it would've been revealed in the last ten min instead of the two.

i love your review. we had some similar thoughts on a few things...I wish nina would have announced her exit after the finale...now i am thinking the reason for the cure is more force. other than that i loved that elena started to think about her future. it bothered me how they fought so hard to get the cure for her and she passed it up in season 4. Elena always wanted to be human and have a family...Stefan always respected that and Damon is being a little selfish...i never believed damon and elena was meant to be ..but if he really loves elena like the way he claims...he will tell her about the cure... I guess i must be the only person on the planet who hate the idea of steroline...the opening with them playing around was okay but i hate that they are moving romance into their relationship...partly because i was a hard stelena/klaroline shipper. i guess i really should give up the idea of stelena. lol Enzo back story was a breath of fresh air...now they making him more useful. i loved that stefan got his humanity back and i loved that it was really damon who brought him back..I need more defan in my life lol. the only thing that pissed me off was NO BONNIE!! I NEED TVD writers to give Alaric and Bonnie more screen time..they are my faves!! :)

Thanks! Lol, agree about the "Final Destination" feeling. I hate going into the season finale already knowing I'm going to get my heart broken. At least if it was a surprise it would be less depressing. But maybe the writers will surprise me and her ending really will be satisfying. I also loved the Heretics reveal and want to see more of them soon!

Thank you! Yes, I missed Bonnie and Alaric in this episode. I can accept Steroline and even think they are cute and good for each other, but I'll always wish it could be Klaroline :)

  30. You're welcome. And seriously, I tried, I really did. To just push it aside and stay invested with it (as I've never hated Elena and am a huge DE shipper since the beginning) but it's just not working for me. The whole thing seriously crushed me and I can't let it go, and that's ON TOP of this cure SL that iI've always hated. Before she made the announcement at least I was able to be like, "not again with this crap Elena still won't take it. She's embraced her vamperism" Now with her exiting they want to make it seem like she's been "longing to be human" it's the most random thing. It's bullshit it what it is. Just to fit it in with her arc. Ugh. If they really have a surprise ending then it better be a real good one. But all this build up to- now the inevitable change- it's just not working for me.

A little late with this comment so maybe you won't see it, but I want to say it. What you said about Klaroline - I think that the sexual attraction was far greater between Klaus and Caro; it was - wow! That sense of barely suppressed raw need, that feeling of danger, that tear off our clothes so we can get skin to skin and then even closer vibe that Klaus and Caroline had - I don't feel that with Steroline. Frankly, I don't think Stelena had it either. But, and you know this is coming - I think Damon and Elena have have had it. Speaking as a woman, bad boy vibe + super charisma = fireworks, every time. (Now I hope I don't get too many death threat threats if anyone else reads this!)

I completely agree with you. Part of what makes me so sad about Elena leaving is that Delena may come to an end (I hope only temporarily!), after being such a huge part of why I love the show so much. Even from my days of reading the original LJ Smith novels, it was all about Delena for me. I'll always have a place in my heart for Klaroline too, and hold out a flicker of hope, especially given Klaus' words "he was your first love, I intend to be your last."

  33. Vampires Forever21 April 2015 at 15:43

OOh, you did read my comment after all! I have adored Damon since "Hello, brother" and so help me if two words can make someone a star I think those words coming out of Ian's mouth did it for him. When Delena started to build and finally happened that was the icing on the cake for me. But Damon, not just Delena, was the MAIN reason I have loved TVD so much. I can live (although unhappily) without Delena if I have to but I can't live without Damon, and I need Stefan to be with him, and you know why I feel that way.

That being said, I admit it would be nice if Delena were not gone forever. But as you know I think that with Nina's leaving Delena should end decisively and permanently so the show can move on without Elena's specter waiting in the wings. Of course I hear you saying, "This is TVD and anything can happen." And you're right! If Klaroline has a flicker of hope I suppose Delena may be a small flame. Looking forward to what may happen is half the fun.
