  • Early Ratings Analysis by Marc Berman (TVMediaInsights)
The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

    Wednesday 4/22/15
    Metered Market Results

    Household
    Rating/Share
    CBS 5.8/ 9
    Fox 5.7/ 9
    ABC 4.7/ 8
    NBC 3.5/ 6
    CW 1.8/ 3

    ———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 4/23/14:
    NBC: +21, ABC: +17, CBS: +14, CW: +12, Fox: – 2

    ———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account additional benchmarks including the expected Live + Same Day demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind that results for any sporting event are always approximate.

    ———-

    -Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “Arrow” (CW), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS)

    -Honorable Mention:
“The Middle” (ABC), “The Goldbergs” (ABC)

    -Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing…there was enough for every show last night!

    ———-

    Ratings Breakdown:
Dominant CBS held a minor one-tenth of a rating point advantage over second-place Fox in the household overnights, which scored a consistent 5.7 rating/9 share for two-hours of “American Idol” from 8-10 p.m. While certainly not the hit it once was, a 15th season renewal for the veteran singing competition is still likely.

On CBS, “Survivor” opened with a first-place 5.9/10 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was three-tenths of a rating point (or five percent) above the 5.6/ 9 from one week earlier. And this should translate into about a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49. In other words, always addictive “Survivor” is poised for more success next season…and beyond.

Next on the Eye net was veteran “Criminal Minds” at a first-place 6.3/10 from 9-10 p.m., followed by one-the-fence recent entry “CSI: Cyber” at a 5.2/ 9 in the 10 p.m. hour (#1), which was equal to one week earlier. And that 5.2 in the overnights last week translated into a 1.5/ 5 in adults 18-49 for “CSI: Cyber” (out of a 2.1/ 7 for “Criminal Minds”).

ABC was identical to one week earlier from 8-9 p.m. care of sitcoms “The Middle” (#3: 5.0/ 8) and “The Goldbergs” (#3t: 4.6/ 7), which in adults 18-49 should fall in the vicinity of a 2.0 rating for “The Middle” and a 2.2 rating for “The Goldbergs.” A potential scenario next season could be “The Middle” anchoring Tuesday at 8 p.m. (into relocated “Fresh Off the Boat”), and “The Goldbergs” shifting to Wednesday at 8 p.m. (into a new comedy). Stay tuned.

“Modern Family” topped the night, of course, for ABC, with a 6.1/10 (#2) in the 9 p.m. half-hour. And that led into a third-place 4.4/ 7 for “black-ish” at 9:30 p.m. (#3) into three-year-old “Nashville” at an above average 3.9/ 7 (#2) at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Nashville” increased by 15 percent from the 3.4/ 6 one week earlier.

Over at NBC, drama “The Mysteries of Laura” rose to a 4.6/ 8 at 8 p.m. (#4) with its first original in three weeks, which matched its best household rating in the metered markets since Feb. 25. If NBC does opt for a second season of “The Mysteries of Laura” (which would be the only renewal from its fall 2014 freshman class), a move to Friday would make sense given the older skew of the audience. But it is not compatible with “Grimm,” unfortunately.

Next on NBC were encore telecasts of “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 2.9/ 4) and “Chicago PD” (#3: 3.1/ 5) from 9-11 p.m.

On The CW, “Arrow” (#5: 2.2/ 4) got a nice boost, building from last week (1.9/ 3 on April 15) by 16 percent and from the year-ago evening (1.8/ 3 on 4/23/14) by 22 percent. But lead-out “Supernatural” (#5: 1.3/ 2 at 9 p.m.) did not pick up any steam.
