  1. Seeing Dean hopeful and laughing broke my heart. Dude just wants to go to the beach. Sam is so afraid. Cas has his mojo back, yeah! The music in this one was really good. Was that Benny in the promo for next week?

  3. Everything Metatron had me cursing Robbie Thompson and rolling my eyes.

-I love that we got insight into Sam's thoughts on Dean. I just really loved Sam in this episode.
-Keeping secrets doesn't work well for these brothers
-Charlie was great in this episode. They didn't take her so OTT quirky
-It was great to see some action and actual gun play again
-I'm glad Cas has his grace back. Strong Cas is better than weak Cas
-We knew from spoiler pics that Sam would go to Rowena. I do not like that.
-That end montage and song was really good and made Me feel a little nostalgic. Sam reminded me of Sam from AVSC.

  4. I appreciate the writers giving "insight" into Sam's POV, but we're always coming back to the never-ending "I have to save my brother at any cost" formula, even though Sam thought the exact opposite last season, and rightly so.
I hope the show can move on from this time before it ends, because I'm sick of it. In the meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy Sam being back in the spotlight, even it's for crappy reasons.
They really nailed the ending, gotta give them that. It was close to perfect. It would have been perfect if when they revealed who Sam was talking to in the end, it was a character that was actually interesting, and not the most hated character to ever appear on the show.

  5. It is really refreshing to see Sam getting a POV. Really good episode.

  6. Great episode! Look forward to next weeks

  8. 70+ people and no one voted 'awful", even "ok"? that's something I haven't seen in along time. Was thinking about skipping Charlie's ep, but will check it out for sure now

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well, now there are a few low votes, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Charlie wasn't over-the-top in this one, and the episode honestly focused more on Sam and Cas (separately). There was a lot to like, even if you're not a Charlie fan.

  10. I skip it too I see it on dvr I here they had Sam stuff but come on all I got from watching a little part is Dean bitching that's it and did not care I love seeing cas meet Charlie but come on it was nice but I am tired of the show.

  11. i thought this episode was really good.

sam being desperate and going dark fits with what happened in seasons 3 and 4 when he was trying to save dean/avenge dean. i was surprised to see sam burn the book of the damned - and then pleased to find out he hadn't. not pleased because that was the right thing to do (it would have been better if he had burned it), but pleased because that was the right sam-thing. kudos to jared padalecki, too, for his acting. i thought he really brought it in his confession scene with charlie and at the end when he was sharing a beer with dean and then talking to rowena.

i'm still not clear, though, on why sam and castiel continue to lie to dean. i am pleased that dean came clean regarding talking to rowena and crowley.

glad cas has his mojo back. hopefully he can use it to kill metatron. will be interesting to see how the demon tablet plays into the plot going forward.

    next episode looks good.

  12. I too thought it was interesting that Dean was the one who came clean about his activities on their night off, while Sam has so far ignored Bobby's advice to do the same. At least both brothers aren't lying right now. That's a nice change.

  13. One of the best episodes of the season. So many feels from seeing Dean happy for just one second to Sam speaking of his past and not being able to do this without Dean to the ending montage of the boys, Charlie and Cas eating. For an episode to feature Charlie, this episode was still perfection.

The Flash was mediocre last night but it was breathtaking to get AMAZING episodes of Arrow and Supernatural tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The last 5 or so minutes were well worth putting with any annoyance Charlie/Cas/Metatron brought. Sam had some great stuff, Dean was visibly terrified of The Book and Charlie was mildly toned down in this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  15. -We knew from spoiler pics that Sam would go to Rowena. I do not like that.
As odd as this sounds I'd prefer Sam working with Crowley to cure Dean. Crowley may not know as much magic as Rowena but Crowley should know someone who knows how to translate the Book; Crowley is also fond of Dean and he knows he's at least partially responsible.

    ReplyDelete
  16. sam is lying he didn't come clean neither did cas you can see the guilt on his fac.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Meant that both brothers aren't lying at the same time, which is a nice change from... well, always. Curious to see if Sam and/or Cas will tell Dean, or if he'll find out on his own what they've been up to behind his back. I can't see Cas keeping up the charade for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Did Sam learn nothing form Bobby's note???? That kind of pissed me off a little!
Predictions for the outcomes of Metatron having possession of the tablet: He'll use it to control Crowley and the Demons of Hell like he did with the angels, but if is going to be the exact same method.... well... that will be the end of it! He will definitely use it to control Crowley though!

  19. [Well, I had a nice long comment that disappeared, so I hope this doesn't show up twice.]

Another good episode. Two in a row! We're on a roll, you guys.

    Highlights:
    1. Exploring relationships and common threads between our characters: Cas & Metatron, Sam & Charlie, even Sam & Rowena, who both have leverage and something precious to lose
    2. Sam explaining his mindset from Stanford to now ... and finding emotional common ground with Charlie in the process (see Highlight No. 1)
    3. Sam and Dean's silent conversations
    4. Cas' mission. Good question, Metatron. What is his mission now, beyond saving Dean and keeping an eye on Claire? Nice touch with the fortune teller thingy in the final montage. What does your future look like, Cas?
    5. MUSIC. Beyond Blue Eyes = perfection.
    6. Family time in the bunker. I sometimes wish all the honorary hunters (Jody, Charlie, Cas) could hang out in the bunker together with the boys.
    7. Metatron discovering waffles (and digestion). I can't stand the character, but Curtis sold this scene. (Bonus: Cas' face throughout.)
    8. EXPLODING BOOKS. Beautiful scene. This episode had a seriously big budget.
    9. Demon tablet resurfaces. Well, that's interesting. I'm trying so hard not to get my hopes up for a Lucifer reappearance, but the Show isn't helping.
    10. "Can I just kill him now?"

Stoked for next week's ep, too. Dare I hope for three in a row?

  20. You want him to save Dean? I really do not understand what people want from Sam I never have , he does one thing that is wrong , does another that is wrong, People whined last season he did not appreciate Dean's sacrifice of him while Dean lied to his face , This fandom wants Sam to destroy himself if he has to , to save Dean then it will just have to put up with what ever he does.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Makes sense now that I think of it.... Dean did the worst thing possible to save Sam and never told him about it. It eventually backfired on Dean. Sam going to Rowena for help is pretty much the same thing. But poor Sammy.... it'll definitely backfire on him!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. No, Sam isn't allowed to destroy himself. That would make Dean angst and do something heinous (but something that is instantly forgotten). And Dean would have to angst some more. And it would be all Sam's fault because selfish Sam destroyed himself to save Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anybody else remember when these articles for Supernatural used to fetch hundreds of comments the morning after the episode aired? Now there's not even 50. This season seems to be chipping away even the most hardcore SPN fans.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would love that. Crowley really does have a soft spot for these guys.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Okay, I will be the lone dissenting voice. Haha! I didn't hate the episode but I didn't love it either. In fact, I was bored in a few spots.

My biggest gripe (I guess I should save this for The Gripe Review - haha) is with the MOC story. This story has been a complete and utter failure in my eyes. I keep waiting for something to happen with it but it never does. Each subsequent episode disappoints me when it comes to this story. When Dean spoke of the book calling him, all I could think was, "So? Who cares?" Was I supposed to be worried? Was I supposed to be concerned? Why? What exactly was the book calling Dean to do anyway? Dean seemed fine and normal to me so I'm not sure why I was supposed to care.

That brings me to Sam and Cas and their general urgency to save Dean. Save him from what? How is the MOC negatively impacting his life? I haven't seen it have any bearing on Dean. Deans not in a bloodlust. He's not a rage-aholic. He's not secretly planning to murder Sam. He's not doing crazy things. He's not torturing people. He's not randomly killing people. He's not doing much of anything IMO. And that is my problem with the story. Because Dean is basically fine, it makes zero sense for Sam to hook up with Rowena to save Dean. If Dean were doing any of the things I mentioned above, his working with Rowena would be the desperate act I'm sure we're supposed to see it as but now, Sam just seems stupid.

I will never understand the way they're telling this MOC story. It is all "show" and no "tell." Was that one act of Dean killing a bunch of murderers, rapists, and human traffickers supposed to be "THE ACT" that shows why it's so imperative that Dean get rid of the Mark?!?!? If so, that is a major fail in my eyes.

Cas/Metatron - Mostly boring though Booger got in a few good lines now and then. Cad was played by him yet again so that was sad. Booger always fools him. It's pathetic. Plus, why were Cas's sings burned out. He did not fall to Earth like the other angels. He was transported to Earth after losing his grace in Heaven so his wings should be full and fine.

Charlie - Ugh. I just don't care for Charlie, and I don't like them turning her into a super hunter. It just seemed to be a little much IMO.

  26. Great episode, that scene with Cas get his grace back was awesome. Nice twist at the end with Sam call to Rowena to help Dean.

I like this Stein family storyline, I hope we learn more about this group.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Can't believe I voted Awesome with Charlie in the ep, but she was good in this one. Loved the music, Cas is whole again, but Sam what the heck are you doing?

    ReplyDelete
  28. My chipping away started with Carver's first ep in season 8 when Sam did not look for Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In the 10.19 promo Sam seems to be agreeing to Rowena's terms, killing Crowley. Not that I mind Sam killing Crowley, I just don't want him to 'do it' because Rowena's mad at her son and this her way of showing Fergus who's boss. I want Sam to have an intricate plan in mind and not just be lead by desperation. In other words I don't want Rowena to be Ruby 3.0 although Jared has referred to their interactions as similar to the way he worked with Ruby.

    ReplyDelete
  30. but Sam what the heck are you doing?
Hopefully we're getting a re-imagining of 'Sam's going dark to save Dean' storyline that was cut short by the S3 writer's strike.

  31. I like this Stein family storyline, I hope we learn more about this group.
Me. too, I hope it doesn't hit a dead end like Aaron/the Golem and the Thule Society seem to have at present.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I appreciate that you see that now, not fans can look at the two characters' actions and motivations equitably. When Dean brought up 'the changing your remark' in Charlie's hearing I thought - what? - how has Sam not proved himself to Dean this entire season. Then later, when Charlie brought Dean's question up, it all made sense. Sam got a chance to explain and Charlie listened and rationally added her 2 cents.
The situation Dean is now in, fighting (even though we're not much of it) a seemingly hopeless battle against the MoC is a very close parallel to the Sam life or death situation Dean faced at the beginning of last season. Both characters made choices they knew the other would never agree to in order to their brother's life. Charlie realized this when Dean did it to Sam and hopefully she'll be equally understanding if/when Dean finds out what Sam did.

    ReplyDelete
  33. True, I agree with you that Aaron and The Golem episode was great too, but I hope they return in some point in the future like this one, I think they will explore more of the man of letters next season.

  34. I'm late to the party. Just watched the ep. I liked it. I guess Charlie doesn't annoy me as much as she does some people. Metaphor also wasn't as annoying as he could have been.

I liked that it moved the story forward, and the big thing is, I'm pretty certain that this is the first time that SPN has attached a song to a Sam POV moment or montage. They've done it a lot with the brothers as a unit. They've done it a lot with Dean. They've done it with Charlie, Garth, and Bobby, but never before Sam. I'm not sure about Cas.

For the nitpicks, while I appreciate that we got a lot more Sam POV than usual, as usual with Thompson, I got the feeling that during his rewatches, he's never really paid attention to Sam. The line from Sam about how he's always looked at hunting as "just one more hunt" didn't ring true. Sam started actively looking for new hunts as early as season 2, and at last a couple of times, Sam said he wouldn't go back to a "normal" life if he could because that's not who he is anymore. Also, his comment that he loves hunting left me wanting more. Why? That comment alone doesn't paint a picture or develop characterization, the way the story of Dean feeling proud on a hunt as a teenager did. It was a missed opportunity for Thompson to add something memorable to the story and add depth to Sam.

Cas is unemployed. He's been replaced by Hannah and is an angel without a purpose. His missing grace was the biggest non story of the season. I don't think I would have remembered it had we not been reminded last week. So it's good it's wrapped up. Nice scene of Cas hitting Metatron - twice.

Overall the story with the book and Jacob was good. It also strangely didn't seem too odd to see Sam meet with Rowena. Dean's comment that Sam had said before he wouldn't save him was consistent. Whether or not that is what happened and whether that's what Sam believes, Dean has always seen it that way. And Sam would feel guilty about that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes. They both know what's right and wrong. They haven't seemed to be able to rise above the emotional response though - except for maybe Sam moving on at the beginning of season 8, but I don't want to open that up again.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i'm still not clear, though, on why sam and castiel continue to lie to dean. i am pleased that dean came clean regarding talking to rowena and crowley.

While I partially think this is being blown up to manufacture angst, an argument could be made that it's because they both have been down this path enough times that they're not going to find a nice neat ending, where no one gets hurt. To save Dean they'll need to do something that will come with a price, and Dean will fight it if he knows. It's why Sam lied to Dean in season 4. He knew Dean would never get behind his decision to explore his demon blood powers, but it was something he felt he had to do. It's also why Dean lied to Sam in season 9 about Gadreel.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Unfortunately, Sam didn't get the chance to explain. Charlie made an assumption and then rolled with that. She doesn't know about the lies or the possession or the violation or the declaration by Dean that he'd do it again. And, of course, no-one is rushing to tell her because this show doesn't focus on the negative deeds that Dean does. Instead, they dismiss them.

And I'm sorry, but the situation Dean is in now is nothing like the situation Sam was in at the start of season 9. Dean has the MOC, he cannot die.
Instead, he will turn in something far worse than a demon and he will
murder all around him. Not curing Dean of the MOC will result in
widespread death and destruction, starting with Sam and Castiel. (Though
I'm waiting for people to start saying 'Well, if Sam cures Dean of the MOC then he's just killing Dean because it means Dean won't be able to live
    forever.)

At the end of season 9, Sam was going to a natural death, something that every single person in the world will face one day. He wasn't suicidal, he just accepted the natural order. He got assurances from Death that there was no way back, noone else could get hurt because of him. The only person who was going to die was him. Dean 'saved' Sam's life for what? For Dean? So that he keep on hunting and most probably die on a hunt?

  38. AWESOME episode!!! and all the others too

    ReplyDelete
  39. yes, it was the best episode ! my heart broke when Sam was talking about Dean... We really need more episodes which focus on their relations and emotions.

God bless Jared for his acting, it hit me right in the feels.

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I watched the episode I get why Jared said that it was the best episode of the year. Which also worries me since I'm afraid if he means the rest of the season is not as good as this episode? :)
Your observations are always very spot on Chris. Sam's confession could have been elaborated on a little bit more. The other thing which struck me was when Dean said that it was his cross to bear. Where was that sentiment in Season 9 when it came to Sam and his decisions? Seemed a little hypocritical especially since Sam has been uber supportive. No wonder Sam is being secretive. It will definitely backfire but I understand him going to Rowena. I hope like Charlie and Metatron, she also dials it down a bit in the future episodes.
Loved the music in the episode. Especially the last song, it hasn't felt that relevant since Death's intro music. :) That one is still hard to top though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. wow .....STANDING OVATION.........

    ReplyDelete
  42. Did Jared say that? I missed that interview.

To elaborate more on my point about what Sam said about hunting, with writing it's the small, personal details that make something come to life. In this case, answering the question, what is Sam getting out of it, would tell us so much more about him and the way his mind works than a general statement that he loves hunting. Characterization used to be one of the show's strengths, and people still have high expectations in that area.

With Dean's reactions, I'm torn between thinking it fits the big brother personality profile, which can be both endearing and annoying at the same time, and thinking part of this is just inconsistency in the writing of characters' points of view from one season to the next.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jared tweeted it just before the episode. So wasn't an interview as such.
Yeah, the small stuff can really make the difference. Somehow Sam's scenes always make me feel wanting. Just a little bit more detail and TLC would really go a long way to resolve that. Since they have such a good base, it shouldn't be so hard. You're right about high expectations. I know I do have.
I guess with Dean, it can be construed as a big sibling thing, but I feel it happens once too often. Looking forward to Wednesday with a little bit hope and a little bit of dread. :)
