  1. Very exciting and interesting episode. Dany seems to be learning a lesson in ruling. Something bad will happen to her soon I have a feeling. Also great to see Bronn again.

  2. - How cool was it to see Oberyn Martell again even if just in a recap segment?
Love Doran and Areo Hotah, but why no Sunspear or Dorne on the map in the opening credits?
    - That serving girl at the inn may have only had a one word line, but she said the hell out of it...
    Ale? Ale? Ale? Ale?
    - Oathkeeper is a bad ass Valiryan steel sword!
it cuts through chain mail, it pierces plate mail, it shatters swords... It slices, it dices...

    - I love Shireen teaching Gilly her letters!
Greyscale is back in play... Backstory or a dark omen of things to come?

Jon won the Lord Commander choosing thanks in large part to Aemon casting the tie-breaking vote. Damn nepotism wins out again! xD

Dany stirred it up yet again!
Who would think it's a good idea to behead the free slave in public?
Hell, even Drogon returned to voice his displeasure. You see that disappointed look he gave her before flying away? XD

I'm really enjoying the pacing this year so far. The story is getting time to breath and the show seems more on point.

  3. I need to watch this one again. I kind felt it had too many bits of things to really feel for it's narrative. I felt like I was watching 15 promos put together, instead of something more seamless, but I totally understand the need to introduce and move on this way, as a set up episode...

-The House of Black And White (too little of a faceless man for the episode title to hold weight, but at least we're in the door...)
-Boy did I think Podrick was gonna be a goner, but Oath Keeper, good skills, and some dumb luck prevailed!
-Sansa, I think you're back to being stupid again, but I suppose it just all depends if Petyr loves you or not and/or if he can really protect you?!
-Dany, Dany, Dany...either Drogon was disappointed in you, or he applauds you, but considering what he did to a child last season, I wouldn't take it as a compliment...
-Stannis's Daughter teaching Gilly to Read and Sam going on about 10 yr old Stark Lord Commander = <3
    - Sam's speech and Jon becoming Lord Commander was also great, but wish we had a bit more of it!
-Cersei excuses to not allow there to be a new HOTK was entertaining, but loved what her Uncle had to say about it all! (made me miss Tywin though)
    -Tyron. Drinking. In Another Box...
-Bronn, just remember what you said about bad people getting there's...
-A glimpse of Dorne (again, I wanted a bit more)
-Sand Snakes, Snake death threats, and Hissing...nice combo!

Maybe I'll be in a better mood when I rewatch it!

  4. A tad choppy but I liked it.

    - Arya kicked it out of the ballpark! Not enough of her of the House of Black and White though
    - Doran was awesome!!! Alexander I've been waiting for you and you didn't disappoint. Even if it was just the one scene.
    - Kevan was AWESOME! (though you know... total sexist... but I get where he's coming from.)
    - I LOL'd with Bronn's scene. He traded one Lannister brother for another. This team-up is gonna be fun!
    - I think Sansa is just playing along with Petyr, but I don't think she much wanted Brienne's help either
    - Still loving the Brienne Pod pairing BTW.
    - Eat that humble pie Danny. Anything that knocks her off that high and self righteous pedstall of hers makes me happy. Even if it does mean killing off misguided former slaves who simply don't know better.
    - Meh on the Wall stuff... The Gilly/Shireen bit was cute. And Sam standing up for Jon (and himself) was great. And Maester Aemon always fabulous, but they were setup scenes for what's going on up in the north, plus they felt a bit rushed. So, as I said "meh".

  5. How is Sansa "being back to stupid"? I won't even address the "again" since that makes no sense either.

  6. I have not been liking this pacing at all. I know the payoff will be good but the set up feels like such a chore this season. The previous seasons had better pacing while setting up just as much.

  7. I can see how some find the deliberate pace annoying, but to me it makes sense. Unlike the previous 3 seasons last year did not have a denouement episode for the finale. This season has to reestablish the stories and establish every character's new arc. This season feels so much more natural and sure-handed to me.

Like the first 3 or 4 years they were still finding out how to do what they wanted and deciding what they wanted to do. The transitions seem more natural and logical to me,.. Previous seasons I questioned a lot of decisions, but ow it feels like they know exactly where they are going and how they are getting there.

Plus this season I find myself actually enjoying both The Wall and Dany in Meereen. That is a first for me as I have never truly appreciated either arc on the TV series and felt they were the weakest arcs season after season.

I think the first two episodes are probably the strongest start to a season we have had despite not having any real action scenes or WTF moments. I'm actually looking forward to where it goes in the second half this season! I say this after not really looking forward to this season at all. After losing much of my passion for the show last year, the high quality so far this season renewed the excitement factor for the series.

  8. and again Aemon, who loved his nephew R, helped Jon to step up.

  9. Seeing Daenerys meeting some resistance is intriguing to me. She doesn't seem to understand the nuance it takes to be in charge. You can't just be ruthless and automatic and you can't do it all by yourself. These are hard lessons to learn.

The execution, though deserved (in my opinion), was botched. She dragged this guy out in front of a crowd and ironically denied him a fair trial in the same way he denied his victim a trial. The crowd wasn't going to understand.

The parallels between Dany in Meereen and current events, or events of the last decade or so, are eerie. Won't everything just return to the way things were when she leaves? Will she ever be able to establish a sustainable government which fosters freedom?

  10. By trusting Little Finger's plans and not believing in Brienne. She might do better with a body guard. If Cat is truly the only woman that Petyr ever loved, then clearly at some point Sansa will be in grave danger, especially since I am thinking they're changing the book plot since there has not been casting mentioned for JP...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Can you give me an example or a reason why Sansa should believe in Brienne and not Littlefinger? As far as Sansa knows, Petyr is the only one who has never wronged her, you have to keep in mind, we the viewer know who Brienne is, Sansa doesn't. Same with Arya, Arya refused Brienne's helps last season, the girls do not know Brienne's intentions.

Sansa saying no to Brienne was very smart and analytical. Like Petyr said, Brienne is untrustworthy from Sansa (and Arya's) point of view because both of the people she swore to protect died.... And not to mention, Brienne was under oath to bring Sansa out of Kings Landing after Jaime got back, which she didn't do.

Show Watchers need to see the show through the characters' point of view sometimes, or they don't understand why characters make the decisions they do.

  12. Sure I understand that, but there are signs all around. Like killing and using Sir Dontos, her Aunt, ect. She should wonder why she is SO important to him at this point and not entirely trust him...

For me Arya's resistance is different, because she has seen more corruption, experienced it first hand being someone else's bargining chip Her experience was more ruthless in a way and I think Arya was never unintelligent to begin with. She has always been cleverer and by the time Brienne came, she had enough. With Sansa, it's more like she loves him and she's unwilling/too scared to venture out and try to learn more of the truth. Of hope fur sake she is learning something and she will turn the tables on him should he come to deserve it.

Sansa is just very much written in the dark way more than a lot of other characters. I would like to see that change and for her to do more brave and unexpected things...

  13. Solid episode. I have one question: When Arya is reciting the names in front of that b/w door, she doesn't mention Tywin Lannister. Did I miss something there? She can't know he's dead, can she?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Everytime Petyr does something, he does for Sansa when we see it from her point of view. He kills Sir Dontos, at the same time telling Sansa Dontos lied about his family heirloom (showing her he lied to her like everyone else). He killed Aunt Lysa, the same woman trying to throw Sansa out a moon door and is arguably more crazy than Joffrey. Sansa doesn't even entirely trust Petyr, I don't know where you are getting that from.

Switch Arya's name with Sansa for your and you got it right. I don't remember Arya ever seeing more corruption. The girls have both seen shitty shit, and Sansa was more of a bargaining chip than anyone else in the entire Kingdom.

Brave as in what? She is trying as best as she can. People need to realize Sansa's strengths are in her words, and unlike Arya, Sansa always has someone hovering over her. She literally can't do much except use her words like Petyr. Like Petyr. Like Tywin. Like Varys. She doesn't physically do stuff, she uses her words. Switch Arya in the same position and people would be saying the same about her "being brave" or Arya would be on a spike. One or the other.

  15. I posted this on the Spoilers thread, and I wanted to post it here as well in hopes someone can give me some ideas about this question:

Found a very interesting comment by the man who plays Ja'qen Hagar in an interview he did with Entertainment Weekly. It was just posted on their website :
    He was asked:
Do you think he actually cares about Arya? Or is she just a recruit?

    His response:
He definitely cares about Arya. But the question is: If he’s hiding it and why is he hiding it? Is it part of a bigger plan? And we still don’t know why he surfaced in first place. He was a prisoner in King’s Landing. Why was he there? Was it all part of a bigger plan and, if so, who is behind it? I like that his character is so mysterious.
I'd appreciate any reactions or speculation on what this might mean.

  16. Oh,dear, if Littlefinger is taking Sansa to be you know what monster's bride at Winterfell ,that will deviate from the bride switch employed in the book and have horrible horrible repercussions for Sansa.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well it remains to be seen if he is/was JH...

It's hard to answer without being spoilerish, but it's very possible that despite having JH's face, that he is another man entirely! You will have to wait and see the agenda of The Faceless Men!

Additionally in the books there is a fan theory that JH is also another character known as The Alchemist and if that is true, then that it is possible that he has bigger plans/agenda.

  18. That is my concern as well. That is why I keep wondering if they will put the former unseen role of Cat upon her...

  19. I figured it was coming but when Arya 's rescuer revealed a familiar face I jumped up cheering. Brienne and Valyrian steel - a good matchup.

  20. We are in dangerously uncharted waters here.

  21. Arya didn't stay with a murderer long, she left him to rot, (and she wasn't afraid to argue and confront him on his choices along the way) because Arya doesn't trust anyone anymore and has nothing left to loose. Sansa still trusts people, just possibly the wrong people. She could easily try her luck with someone else, but she doesn't, because she must believe she is safer with him, meaning to some degree, she trusts him more than a stranger.

I will grant you that stupid is perhaps the wrong word, maybe helpless is better, and I will reserve my judgements till I see this possible plot with the Boltons and Theon play out, but I don't think this will lead her to a better or happier place...

Statisitically 85% of the time, people are killed by someone they know in murder cases.

I am done with this debate. To each their own. :)

  22. And Sansa doesn't let Petyr rot because he is still powerful and helping her. Trying luck with random people has to be one of the dumbest things anyone in any position (especially Sansa's )would do in Game of Thrones.

She's comfortable, sipping wine, relaxing in taverns and traveling the Vale with one of the most powerful men in Westeros while he teaches her the mechanics behind politics and "The Game". Why would she ever endanger that? So in the end, imo Sansa is playing her cards the exact way anyone else with any sense would do. It's what kept her alive or atleast not maimed for so long. Now Petyr will want her to make some power plays on her own, let's see how she responds after weeks under his tutelage.

And alright, to each their own.

  23. That's a fair point I hadn't thought of....
Tywin was larger than life and well known so I guess it is possible the news reached her, but his name should definitely still be on her list if not!

Feels like since the audience knows Tywin is dead D&D felt removing him was okay....

    Odd choice though.

  24. almost all of the characters have friends that were previously strangers and I said Arya let The Hound Rot.

  25. Cheeky episode. Bron's betrothed had the best facial expressions.
