The Flash - Rogue Time - Review

The challenge with any great cliffhanger is living up to its potential. While at times I loved what went on during this episode, much of it felt like a letdown after being blown away so many times last week. At times it was almost frustrating, it did however give some good moments but nothing on the level that we got last week.
After having gone back in time, Barry quickly learnt just how much the time-stream can be screwed with. Make one change and it ricochets. It was interesting to see how things diverge as they went along and how some minor comments can completely change things. Mardon however was dealt with quickly and in a most unsatisfying manner. After trying to make him seem impressive last episode he just came off as weak here. However to take his place we got Captain Cold, Heat Wave and newbie Golden Glider.

I personally enjoyed Captain Cold and Heat Wave along with their comic-book-style performance. A scene I really enjoyed took place near the end when Captain Cold and Barry came to a...lets go with 'mutual understanding'. Lisa also adds some more fun to the Rogues as they bolster their line-up, however I didn't like her changes from the comics.

I'm just nitpicking here, but Golden Glider focuses more on speed with various jewel themed gadgetry. Giving her a gold gun goes against that and also opens up more plot related questions. If Cisco can make these guns in a couple of hours out of household items...why hasn't he given one to say...Joe?

On the topic of Cisco though, he really was one of the high points of this episode. Since the previous episode, Carlos has really been nailing his performance. We also got to see Cisco's family along with his brother, Dante, after being referenced last week. However when push came to shove, Cisco had to make a tough choice between his friends and his family. Now due to his actions, Captain Cold knows Flash's identity.

Romance was also on the cards in this episode, now that Barry knew Iris' feelings. However, as with many other elements the ricochet effects didn't work in Barry's favor. Barry wants Iris and came so close to it. With that knowledge he threw away his relationship with Linda, only to lose Iris to Eddie as well.

Harrison also had some nice moments during this episode, which while of less importance then they were last week still plays up his mysterious nature. His friendship with Cisco had some nice touches and even carried a small ode to the events of last week. However the last thing Harrison wants is for Barry to ruin the time-stream. Right now he believes he's on a path to return to the future, but as things change will that always remain the same? Unfortunately for Harrison, Barry has started to suspect his involvement with Reverse Flash.

Also as with the ricochet effect, someone had to die. Unfortunately this time it had to be Mason. I would have liked for Mason to tell Iris about his findings regarding Harrison. She needs to be brought into the main plot rather then just played up as the love interest.

Oh and Caitlin near the end...nice save!

Overall thoughts:
While much of this episode was lackluster compared to the previous week, I do however believe it set up some important foundation for the future that was really needed. We know that Barry will go back in time again, this time to the day his mother was killed. But now that Barry knows just how bad things can turn out, will his actions and choices be affected?

  2. Great review. Even I was annoyed when Mason did not reveal his findings to Iris. Last episode it was Iris that brings this to Barry's attention. Now they took that plot away from her and conveniently gave it to Barry to solve. It should still have been Iris who investigate into Wells with papa West or Barry.

Also did Iris spill Barry having feelings for her to Eddie? If yes why was it not shown to us?

Yeah. They've had many openings to bring Iris into the main story and give her something away from the love triangle but they just keep giving them to someone else. I was hoping to see Iris digging deep into Harrison and showing up on his radar. He probably can't kill Iris without changing the future drastically which puts her in an interesting position. If Harrison can't stop Iris without changing the future, then she unknowingly has the power.

The Eddie thing confused me. I feel like their was meant to be another scene or perhaps more to it that got cut out. It just had weird feeling of something missing.

  4. This episode was a major disappointment to me after previous installment which was amazing!
    Reasons-
1.They undid every twists/revelations of the previous episode & acted like nothing had happened thereby using this awesome idea of time traveling pointless. So,what was the point of killing cisco or even barry's identity reveal & love confession-Just a gimmick?
2.Cisco's brother-Cliche character. Two brothers, one parent's favorite.Apparent hatred between siblings,at the end of the episode, conveniently every issues between them is resolved which didn't happen in 20+ years before this-i expected better than this.
    3.Captain's Cold's sister was another over-the-top character like Heatwave.Gold,really?!?
4.Does anyone even buy than Iris loves Eddie coz all i see is her babbling i love him,i love him all the time, let us see some genuine moments between them coz i'm not seeing any on-screen.She moved in with him so why not see some of them in his apartment? This eddie character is really getting on my nerves, rick cosnett was so good as a villain in TVD,why is he acting so badly here i have no idea!!
5.Finally,that explanation caitlin gave to iris & eddie at the end-i didn't know whether to cry or laugh.

  5. Yeah...I'm disappointed with what they're doing with Iris..As you pointed out, they've had so many opportunities to bring her into the loop and stop treating her like just a love interest. Also, I'm bummed that they killed Mason, because the actor was very good and he and Iris had the potential to make a great investigative team.

  6. I like Hot and Cold. Their good acting helps to counter the guy who plays The Flush. Someone should tell him he's not on Glee any more. Barry Allen is the wimpiest, squintiest, smirkiest, superless hero I've ever seen.
As to the plot. So, Cisco could make a gun that turns anything into gold, which is chemically impossible by the way. Ignoring that fact; why didn't he make one before now? If you knew how to make a gold making gun, wouldn't you? And why, if you have a gold making gun, do you need to rob a truck? You have - a gun - that makes - GOLD! You don't need to rob anything - just zap some rocks! Because of that, the bad guys have to fit into the standard, cliche - they're bad just because. So, so tired of that. I want a complex villain, like Bester from Babylon 5 or The Mayor from Buffy, people with good and bad, with their own set of scruples. "I'm just evil!" doesn't cut it.
