The Blacklist - Tom Keen (No.7) - Review: "The Disenfranchised"

23 Mar 2015

"Be careful, Lizzy, because the truth of it is once you start down this road, there's no logical place to stop. You could see to her education, health ins., housing. You can watch her or have her watched. Keep her safe. Try to ascertain her hopes, dreams, desires. Pull strings, call in favors to discreetly smooth the path. And for the first few years, it may work. You'll draw some measure of virtue from being her invisible benefactor."

In an exceptional episode which actually felt like a conclusion to the previous week's episode, 'The Major', The Blacklist managed to garner the highest ratings for itself in five weeks obtaining over 8.7 million viewers. As one of the better episodes of the season, 'Tom Keen' managed to close out some of the amazing storylines being played out since this season first began. I myself have started to enjoy the progression of the second season even more so due to some of the main character's motivations being made clearer, especially as we get closer to this season's finale.

Last Thursday night's episode of The Blacklist involved some surprising scenes to achieve closure on a few storylines while shedding light on others. Tom Connolly barging in on Judge Denner was one of my more favored moments in the episode. It has actually made me look forward to seeing how the Task Force could possibly utilize him in the future. Although Connolly revealed his villainous tendencies, I enjoyed the scene when he put the judge in his place. I also believe there is a good chance we have now seen the last of the judge and this storyline with the Harbormaster. In my opinion, the judge and this venture were actually just a simple catalyst to bring forth Connolly as an important addition to the many elements circling our main characters. He is someone we need to keep a close eye on in the future. I can visualize Connolly becoming a blacklister at some point in upcoming seasons, although not anytime soon.

The blacklister of the week was none other than the infamous Tom Keen; Liz's estranged ex husband from season one whom we've mostly known as a third-grade school teacher. Tom is certainly one of the best characters on The Blacklist and I am pleased to see his character is still around. More importantly, since he is now out of jail, he may possibly return into the mix at any moment. Since the first episode of season one, I have truly enjoyed observing Tom's evolution from an everyday elementary school teacher to a full fledged international killer spy, which is reminiscent of Walter White's advancement into his 'Scarface'-like persona from Breaking Bad. However, unlike Walter White, who dealt with the illegal drug trade, one can surmise Tom was always a hardened secret agent, yet from our point of view, we've only witnessed the "innocent school teacher" starting point.

Something that struck me as interesting was that it appeared whenever Liz's name was mentioned, or Tom saw people from his past, his demeanor relaxed just a little. He seemed to soften and loosen up at the mere mention of Liz's name. I guess it is possible that Tom can harbor feelings for someone and it would appear he still loves and cares for Liz. In the end, when he finally acquiesced with Red's plea, Tom realized that his love for Liz, the women he betrayed on so many levels, trumped his reluctance to help Red in any way. It is what makes Tom such an interesting character; he can tell Red no and do things on his own terms. This is something many characters have difficulty with in a world governed largely by Mr. Reddington.

This is Red's world after all and we are all just tourists. I am paraphrasing what Red said to Ressler during last Thursday night's episode, of course. Although this was directed to Ressler, it felt like he was conveying this to every character, good or evil. Only his rules apply. What he says goes in his world. Everyone else is just merely visiting. In some ways, Red could also have been speaking to us, the audience as well. His way of informing us anything is possible for him in the world of The Blacklist. Exhibiting he is above the law and what he wants to happen will happen. Everyone besides Red are the disenfranchised - not just the German group Tom has been associated with in these past few episodes.

In Red's distinctive world, the character who stands out the most as being disenfranchised is Liz. During the final moments of the episode, Red overheard Liz creating a scholarship for the deceased Harbormaster's daughter. Of course we all know how Red wants to keep Liz safe from harm, from doing things that could put her life in jeopardy, and even traveling down the wrong path, so what he does next comes as no surprise. In a special moment, which James Spader delivers impeccably, Red explains to Liz the dangers of going down the road of pure altruism she has started on. This in turn generates Red to pouring out his emotions in such a way it mirrors what he has done for Liz her entire life: protecting her. But again, this is Red's world. Just as he realizes he might say too much, he concludes the conversation where he doesn't have to say anymore. When Liz asks him how he knew Tom would be set free in the process of helping her, Red does not reply. Remember, this is Red's world and he knows that sometimes the best thing to say is to say nothing at all.

There are now only 5 episodes remaining until this season's finale which will most likely be one incredible hour for The Blacklist. I have enjoyed how the writers have pared down some story lines, essentially preparing us for the answers to the myriad of questions that have been building up this season. From the key Red obtained from Pepper to the silver suitcase he retrieved from the presidential car in the container on The Kenyon Family compound to whomever is on the other end of the line from the number in Fitch's safe - the questions have been piling up. These final episodes will hopefully shed much needed light on many of Red's actions during season two and what The Fulcrum will reveal. Once again, it is Red's world and we want to know plenty more about it before this season is finished.

"But that won't last. It's all a fraud. That it's really not about her at all. That it's all about you. And you're just going through the motions to salve your own guilt. Look, all the money, all the time and effort, all the favors in the world cannot possibly equal what you took away from her. Everything else is just a nice gesture."
- Red to Liz

Red's Quotes

- "But this is my world and you're a tourist. You blink wrong and we're both dead"
Red to Ressler

- "This journey we're on isn't over just yet. You may have given up on us, but I haven't."
Red to Liz

Music from the Episode

- "Always Gold" - Radical Face
Final Music Montage - Liz's case is dismissed as Tom shows up in court; Cooper & Connolly discuss the task force and Liz; Red & Liz talk about how she is helping the Harbormaster's daughter financially mirroring how Red has helped her over the years; Tom calls Liz to see if she is ok.

Thoughts and Discussion

- I love the card Aram got for Agent Cooper. I laughed at the sentiment he wrote inside - "Get well, bitch, we've got some partying to do" - Lol. He seriously could have his own spin-off show. And him and Navabi need to go on a date soon too.

- In my review, I likened Tom's story (from our perspective since season 1) to Walter White's in Breaking Bad. By the end of this story line I guess Tom was also in the drug business with what we witnessed from the cold open in Thursday's episode.

- Will we see the judge again? Or do you think his story line is over and done with?

- What will become of Tom now that he is back and exonerated of all wrong doing and any negative association with what happened concerning the Harbormaster.

- I really enjoyed Connolly's scenes this episode. His ruthlessness and history with Cooper make me wonder if he will ever be a blacklister.

- Did you notice...When Red visits Ruddiger we see someone playing Solitaire. The bottom cards are '4' and '7'. Red was number 4 on the FBI's Most Wanted List and Tom is number 7 on the blacklist. I thought that was interesting.

Thank you for checking out my review! Please comment below so we can discuss the episode and the series some more. Have a great week everyone!

  1. I loved loved loved this episode...mainly for Tom.To me it showed that somewhere along the line in their relationship he fell in love with her.The call at the end between the two proved it as well.Red will always do what he has to do to protect Liz,even if he has to pull ten strings to get it done. Im really hoping he is not her real dad ,that would be so anti climatic .Some great one liners in the episode as well...love this show .Excellent episode ...one of the best if not the best for the season.

  2. This was an amazing episode.

I hope we get to see more Tom in the future.

  3. Thank your personal god of choice (and all the rest for that matter)...
Liz's court issue is finally over!!
    Huzzah!

Ok for the Tom Keen episode this was a wash for me. I expected more, but if I take the info we got from the previous episode and insert in as part of Tom's story I am a bit happier. Too bad the showrunners did not combined the two episodes as well though! Less courtroom drama more Tom drama and it would have been a better episode!

Now that I think of it, it feels like many of this year's Blacklister's have been relegated to the B-plot with Liz's issues taking the A-plot most of the season. Am I wrong here? Even if I am wrong in how many Blacklisters wer B-plots, I know I'm not wrong in my feeling that this year had a number of lackluster ";Listers" in my opinion! Considering one of the best characters on the series, Tom Keen, did not make for a stellar episode tells me a lot... Sadly.

    Speaking of Tom...
I'm not sure Red knew ahead of time that Tom would be pardoned/ acquitted or just let free... Even if Red did suspect as much, I seriously doubt Tom knew he was going to be a free man in a better place after turning himself in than he was before. I often, maybe too often say 'no good dead goes unpunished', but in this case Tom seems to actually have been rewarded for his altruistic act! Go figure! Maybe something will turn before the finale...

Connolly is no Fitch, but he is growing on me!
I wonder where his loyalties are still.. Is he only out for himself or is he part of a clandestine organization within the government or even part of the Cabal? I just hope Cooper is not being lied to regarding his medical state. Seizures from medication is possible, but seizures from the cancer getting worse is possible as well... Ugh.

Over all I did like the episode, mostly for Red's story time and the close of the court case.

  5. I can't help it, I feel the judge was a bully. There were scenes when he enjoys his power.

  6. So grateful this Our Lizzie Goes To Court nonsense is over( I hope). I hated the Harbormaster/Court plotline but it must have been just the means the writers came up with to get Tom back in the picture without fear of prosecution and to move Connally's influence on events forward. It's just that so many elements of it were ridiculous. Aram and Navabi helped get me through the travesty of it. And I hope The Blacklist has Eggold's contract locked up for a few seasons because I think he is going to be in demand after his recent episodes. I am worried that Cooper was lied to by the doctor and the seizure is actually his condition worsening and Connally wants to keep him around and beholding to him for whatever time he has left. You made some very good points as usual. We are all just dancing to whatever tune Red puts on the jukebox. Looking forward to the last few episodes and hoping we get more than a few crumbs of answers. Thanks again for the review.

  8. Well, I love this Red world then! xD Great review!
I really hope they'll make a big reveal this season finale: either some of the whole Fulcrum scene, or what Red and Liz's connection really is. I really don't think they should stretch it that much. Besides, if it's revealed, it'll probably bring something new into their relationship...

  9. I llike the word the Judge used to describe everything.
    Twisted.
Tom/Liz relatonship, Liz/Red, Tom/Red. that judge got it all in one simple word.
Liz worried even for a secod that Tom was going spend his life in prison, Red going after Tom and knowing this one will do anything to save her. Tom doing as Red predicted and saving Liz not even caring about his fate, cause i believe he didnt knew he was going to be saved. Tom saying that Red has an agenda when he said "your task force" and it's true, The task force do as Red says and then Red takes something that he needs, what for?, i guess it will be for the worst terrorist attack known ever?. And that final scene where Red explained what could happened to Liz, that was more about him than her. We are getting closer to the truth people. It's time to pop the champagne! (I really hope they dont drag this more than s2, let at least the audience find out whatever is their conection and go from there)
Conolly, he will be a problem, i can see it. we all can see it.

Great review Geo! it's gonna be fun to watch where Tom's story goes next. Also i found inetresting that Tom had a number on the Blacklist as "Tom Keen" and not his real name.

  10. I have been a Tom fan from the first, so this ep made me very happy. ;) Since Carver has messed up SPN so badly, The Blacklist has become my favorite series and I think James Spader is HOT as Red.

  11. James Spader is 20+ years older than me, but I have to say, he does have a way about it. ;-) haha

  12. Well he is 20+ years YOUNGER than me and I still think he is hot. ;)

  13. I realize now I could have easily looked that up online...Lol...sorry

  14. Thanks Ron!
It is a little twisted and I think it might be a way for the writers to get Tom back into Liz's good graces...if that is even possible...
But I think Tom is not going anywhere anytime soon because the creators realize the audience is starting to like his character a little more. So, maybe they will find a way for Liz to fall in love with him again...perhaps after certain elements of his character become revealed?...maybe...?

I personally do not think that Red/Liz's relationship (if there is one) will be revealed this season or even in Season Three for that matter.

And that is a very good observation, Ron...They didn't use Tom's real name as the Episode Title...very interesting I think.

Thanks again for the kind words Ron!

  15. Thank you for the kind words!

I don't think we will get a reveal about their relationship just yet but I do hope it is sooner rather than later. There are plenty more interesting story threads that could take the spotlight and still make The Blacklist as great as it is now.

  16. I am glad the court story line is over as well. I don;t think we will see the judge again, but there are a lot of fans that think we will, so who knows?

  17. I think Ryan Eggold has done an exceptional job the past few episodes. He is a great actor and I look forward to seeing more of his character this season, but I am glad the courtroom stuff is over and done with.

Thank you for the nice words about my review. It is very much appreciated! I like what you said that we are all just dancing to whatever tune Red puts on the Jukebox.

I think the final few episodes are going to be great!

  18. He was clearly being a bully and just as Connolly stated, "Out of his depth". I hope we saw the last of that judge...

  19. Sadly I think that judge will return somehow.

  20. Looks like I'm the only one who's not a Tom
fan.I'm not into this guy since day 1.When he played a sweet innocent husband
and school teacher,he's quite bored. And then his spy identity was exposed,he
turned to cold-blooded killer.Ugh.I don't have soft spot for him. His storyline was kinda awkward and disconnected
with the main one, his history with Red, the “he loves Liz”thing.Tptb push it
hard ,twisted the SLs and narrative to make room for him.Just want his SL be finished this season. The show will move forward and speed up the pace.

  21. There is quite a few number of fans that dislike Tom and his Story Arc since S1E1. I suppose at times his story seem disconnected from the main arc, but I'm willing to bet the writers want to bring him back into the fold and find a permanent spot for him. I don't think they have done all this just kill him off in the coming Eps.

  22. Tom joins the task force? If it happened,it would be ludicrous.I don't understand why he can walk away from the trail. How did he come back? Connolly arranged it and made a deal with him?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with ffalta in that I think the "love" seems forced, but I agree with you, Tom is not going to be out of the storyline just yet.

  24. Tom was never the teacher, he was always the agent. He's had a few violent fights with Liz to drive that issue home. We've also known he's in love with her since the Decembrist. She had him locked in chains for 4 months and he still kills to protect her. He also made a phone call to her before going undercover again, had to be warned off by Red and on and on. Of course he was going to show up, if he wasn't Red would have bodily dragged him back instead of using his knowledge of Tom's feelings for Liz to do it. The only person who was surprised was Liz. I thought it a good episode, just not very surprising.
