  1. This show has perfected the slow burn. Was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

  2. Brilliant episode, and impeccably acted by Keri Russell and Lois Smith. Probably the most gut-wrenching scenes of the show thus far, and it looks like this could be a big turning point for Elizabeth.

  3. Lois Smith's performance absolutely deserves award recognition. Hell, the whole show deserves recognition.

That scene was the highlight of the season so far. An absolutely heart-wrenching resolution.

  4. "That's what evil people tell themselves when they do evil things"...the last words of a dying woman to Elizabeth. Chilling. That entire scene between Elizabeth and the character played by Louis Smith was incredible. How does this show not get more awards?

I always feel so tense watching the scenes between Phillip and Martha, and with every recent scene I keep wondering when she'll reach breaking point. There was something very chilling about that scene where she told him about the computer undergoing maintenance. This was their way of both acknowledging that he had married her just to get information and I felt like it was her way of testing him. She's stuck because she cannot turn him in without also being charged of treason, so I suspect that at some point, she's going to use that gun on him. I think Phillip is misjudging the situation. I was glad that we got a break from his relationship with the fifteen-year old girl which is even more uncomfortable to watch. It's odd to watch a man who cares so much about his family and his children, pull of these kinds of elaborate deceptions that will ultimately result in ruining multiple lives.

I may have missed some key scenes in prior episodes, but I think that the woman who defected is definitely a spy. And she seemed way too calm when she was threatened in the hotel room

  6. Gut wrenching and emotionally draining. What an awesome episode. There's many reasons why Elizabeth is my favorite character and this episode provided a showcase of some of those reasons. Phenomenal scenes between her and that old lady. The collateral damage that occurred was so heart breaking that a cold hearted assassin like her was moved to tears. And as a viewer, it left me numb.

This episode left me really annoyed with Philip. He is being a f*cking jackass. I don't mean that final scene with Gabriel (which waas great) but his attitude towards the Martha operation and him being myopic about it. Has he really developed feelings for Martha? Because that is just cruel to Elizabeth who had to listen to him trying to protect Martha from future tape recovery missions. She caught his concern and when she wanted to talk to him about it, he brushed her off. "F*ck you Philip!! Elizabeth loves you. Get your head in the game."

Is Zinaida a spy? I have a feeling that Stan is barking up the wrong tree.

  7. Not feelings. I just think he cares about ehr as a friend, teh way i see his relationship with Martha is that he feels more at ease with her (Martha is his job) but when he is with her, he gets to be this guy that doesnt have to worry about Russia, the KGB and everything else.I feel like with Martha he is the eprson eh wants to be when he is with Elizabeth.

  8. DAMN! for episodes like this is why I love The Americans.

The actress that played the old lady was excellent an impecable performance. "That's what evil people tell themselves when they do evil things" better wprds had never been said. all those scenes were heartbreaking and brilliant, the acting, teh pace, evrything that went between Elizabeth and her was just amazing.

Hnas. MAN WHAT DID YOU DO! man thatw as crazy and reckless. I was rooting for the guy to tun and not to get killed but damn Hans got him.
Philip trust Martha, he doesnt want t kill her, he cares about her as a friend, after all this time it was bound to develop something. I hope Martha does not break, I stand with Philip, she is stronger than we though. See Nina and how she is doing everything to survive, I hope Martha is the same.
    Stan, you are loosing it.

  13. His feelings for her are just as person--why wouldn't he try to keep her from a dangerous job that she doesn't deserve just because Elizabeth might have to hear him do it? What she said about Martha later just came out wrong and I think she understood that it was a misunderstanding. I do hope they get more back together though, soon. I think they will--those words from Betty are going to start some change in Elizabeth.
