After new rules issued last month announced that a comedy would be defined as a series with episodes of 30 minutes or less and drama would be episodes an hour long, the TV Academy has released the first decisions by a panel established to evaluate category eligibility.
The nine-member panel, which includes five industry leaders appointed by the academy chairman and four appointees by the board of governors, ruled that Showtime’s “Shameless,” CW’s “Jane the Virgin” and Fox’s “Glee” can be considered comedies, despite their length. A two-thirds vote of the panel was required to reach each decision.
Each of the series will compete in the comedy category for all other awards, including performer, writer, director, etc.

Good for JtV! It didn't stand a chance against dramas - obviously, since it is a comedy -, so it's nice to see it will get a chance on the comedy section!
ReplyDeleteImagine if JtV lands an nom for this. It would be fantastic. But glee has alwys been in the comedy section.
ReplyDeleteGood for Jane. It does have moments of touching drama but it mostly comedy and satire and even some of the "drama" is slight satire of telenovelas. Definitely doesn't belong in the drama category. Hope it wins an Emmy! Or is at least nominated.

ReplyDeleteNot time but tone should be the main definer on what kind of show it is anyway... so the 30 min restriction is stupid anyway...
ReplyDeleteTruth? If the idea wouldn't add another 3 hours to award shows, I'd say create a whole ne category for dramedies.
