Chicago Fire - Forgive You Anything - Review

12 Mar 2015

Casey walks into a strip club and my first thought is, Has he really sunk this low? But no worries, he’s just doing construction for the guy who owns the place. While he wasn’t there for the stripping, I can’t help think how much Casey has let loose since the breakup with Dawson. Maybe he’s not too far off from exploring the exotic dancing world…(not as a dancer, but wouldn’t that be hilarious?)

Emmett turns up at the firehouse looking for Mouch. Surprise! Mouch isn’t his dad. Emmett explains that his half-sister is Mouch’s daughter, and Mouch failed Emmett’s “test” when he didn’t show at the diner. The scenes between Boden, Herrmann, and Mouch continue to succeed. After a heart to heart with Boden and Herrmann, Mouch decides to pursue getting to know his daughter.

Mouch begs Emmett for another chance, and I was surprised that the scene almost brought me to tears. This was such a great storyline for Mouch to get, and thankfully, we’ll get the chance to see Mouch with his daughter because Emmett agreed!

Amy Morton as Sergeant Trudy Platt continues to deliver – she’s simply fantastic. Mouch and Platt sit together at a fancy restaurant waiting to meet Mouch’s daughter. Platt abruptly gets up to leave, telling Mouch it’s something he has to do on his own.

As much as I love wild and free Casey (and we needed a break from the boredom), something just feels off about it all. Is it just me? I really can’t figure out what exactly it is about his storyline right now that doesn’t feel quite right.

This week we were introduced to Severide’s friend, Scott Rice. With approval from Boden, Severide gets Rice a spot on Squad. Controversy surrounds Rice, as it’s rumored he threw someone out of a third-story window on a call.

A few members of the house (mainly Otis, because he has to something I suppose), investigate what really happened with the Rice incident. Apparently, Rice did throw a man (a meth addict) out of a first-story window…just one week after his wife died. Now, he’s a widower and single father. Ouch.

Severide and Rice apparently went to high school together. The two reminisce about the past which not-so-subtly introduces us to April, a past girlfriend? Just friend? of Severide’s. If the newest spinoff Chicago MD takes off, she’ll serve as one of the leads. Supposedly, we’ll see a backdoor pilot later this season during an hour of Chicago Fire. Quite frankly, the April/Severide storyline was a snoozefest. That is, until Severide hinted to something in his past. I’d like to know about his past of course, but I can definitely do without the April storyline.

I’ll just be blunt: I don’t like Rice. He’s got the story, sure. On paper, he could be a great character. But there’s something that’s just not translating on screen. I’ll give him a chance, because I think everyone deserves more than one episode to get interesting. Then again, I think back to characters like Clark, Voight, Antonio, Katie, Newhouse, Welch…the list goes on with characters who made a mark in their first appearance. But fine, I’ll give him a chance.

To make matters worse, Newhouse is gone! I want to cry. I’m tire of the endless rotation of Squad members. Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, get some solid Squad members and make them permanent! If the writers are taking requests, I’d like Newhouse, Clark, and Welch. Thank you.

Mills is itching to get back to Squad. He’s got re-evaluation tests lined up and he can’t get the results quick enough. I understand wanting to get back to your dream job, but the way Mills handled this showed his immaturity. It’s easy to forget that he’s the youngest in the house (only Sylvie may be younger, not entirely sure) and still has a lot of growing up to do.

I love Mills, he’s one of my favorites. But it’s not his spot on Squad. Yes, he was once on Squad, but that doesn’t mean he has a reserved spot for when and if he can ever return. I’d like to see Mills grow up a bit more, and I’m sure we will. He’s already come a long way in the show’s three seasons.

Dawson is finally ready for a night out and enlists Sylvie to serve as her wing-woman. When Sylvie asks Cruz to join, he tells her he’d rather stay home and watch the Blackhawk’s game with her. She’s clearly disappointed, and I sincerely hope it’s the beginning of the end for them.

After their night out, Sylvie tells Dawson that she wants to be bold, which is why she started over in Chicago. But she seems to have fallen back into her “comfortable and nice” lifestyle, and I get the feeling they are now talking about Cruz. Sylvie’s finally seen the light! She tells Dawson she adores Cruz, but it’s not the life she wants.

Well, Sylvie, do you know who’s a little dangerous, lives on the edge, and is full of spontaneity? Hmmm…I wonder…

Yeah, I’m pulling for Sylvie and Severide.

What did you think of the episode? Will Mills be cleared for Squad duty? How long will Rice stick around?

  1. Great review! I didn't like Rice, either. I completely agree about being tired of the rotating squad members. I loved Newhouse, and I'm sad that he's gone. And, I'm sorry, but I have no interest in Capp.

While I really want Mills back on squad, I agree that he definitely could have handled this situation better. He seemed too eager to prove himself. But I still love him. :)

The April/Severide stuff bored me, too. I wonder what happened to the Chicago Med cast that was in the Fire/PD crossover last season. I love Amanda Righetti and found her more interesting.

  2. I couldn't disagree more on the Severide/April thing. I saw chemistry immediately. As for Rice I think that he will develop into a character that we will get to like. Sylvie/Cruz thing...I want it over and secretly I want her to try things out with Mills...I see something there :)

  3. Thanks for the review.

I agree with you about Casey. They seem to want to have him go off the rails I bit, I guess, but I just can't see him in that role. I'm guessing the next step is to have him get involved with one of the strippers from the club...whatever. *insert eyeroll* Maybe they think we'll be happy to see him back with Dawson after but that's not going to work for me. That's just another relationship that's not working out. I wish they'd just focus on work with him for a while. Same with Severide. Stop trying to pair them up with people.

And Rice didn't impress me much either.

  4. I agree with every single point you made. I really enjoyed the Mouch/Emmett scene and I was highly impressed with the actor that played him. I hope we see more of him and this storyline in the future. Also, did you know the girl that played Mouch's daughter is actually Christian Stolte's real daughter?

I'm super curious about Severide's past, but I feel like the writers don't take his love life seriously and I hate that. They keep using him to bridge these crossovers, so I knew before April was even introduced I wouldn't be on board with it -- it'll be treated just like his relationship with Lindsay was. Nothing against the actress or the character itself; it just all feels very fabricated.

Rice -- I'm on the same page. I get it and I feel bad for him, but something just isn't sitting right with me. I don't know if it's the actor or just the way the character is seemingly put on a pedestal, half of 51 making googly eyes at him while he tells his "amazing stories." I respect Severide though for what he's trying to do. Mills, while I understand his desperation, it isn't right to ask that of Severide.

Also, heck yes I'm so ready for Cruz and Brett to break up! I love that she basically said she started dating Cruz because it was "comfortable and nice" and I think I even remember her agreeing to go out with Cruz because she wanted to date a "nice guy." And I'm so happy you thought of Severide, too! I've been so on board with that relationship since the beginning of the season. I'm so desparate for more scenes between them. I would love to just see Brett be single, but still build a friendship with Severide. Let that relationship be organic and make them both work for it until they can be together.

  5. I'm actually rooting for Rice and Dawson. I mean, I know that they will eventually have Casey and Dawson back together but will we still root for him at that point? They're making him detestable and boring to be honest. Jesse Spencer is also giving me nothing lately, no emotions, NADA! It's hard to get into his scenes while the acting isn't following. Plus, the fact that he acts like he never cared one bit for Dawson is ridiculous. I just hope they have something better for him in mind, than to have him screw one of the stripper. If that's the case, I'll never be able to want him back with Dawson. How come Severide and Casey can screw a different girl every week but we keep having Dawson either pinning for him or getting nothing. Give her a new love interest, god know Monica Raymund can have chemistry with a doorbell.

This episode was the weakest of the season for me. While I love Yaya Da Costa, I'm upset that they bring her on Fire as Severide's 456258 love interest.

Cruz deserves way better than Sylvie. He's a nice guy with no luck in his love life. Next thing you know and even his BFF Otis will have feelings for Brett.

Anyway, glad Hermmann is at the center next week, hope Dawson's will be having a storyline soon and I'm all for keeping Scott Rice around.

  6. The whole episode felt like a set-up. And all with heavy name-dropping of "Chocago Med"? I'm tired of it. I know there's going to be a spin off, just move on already!

Introduction of two new characters was heavy handed, I give you that, but their later scenes kind of softened the initial awkwardness. I think Rice may be an interesting character and Warren Christie can deliver.

Haven't seen Yaya DaCosta ever before and I found April / Severide interactions not very compelling on a first viewing but upon rewatch I definitely warmed up to them. I would like however to see them as friends, not a potential romantic couple. I think that Severide works so well with friendships and given their history together (and his mention of "never got to thank your parents" -- that's loaded!) I see a great potential here.

So. In hindsight, I think the episode set things up quite well, even if it was boring on the first viewing.

  7. Completely disagree about severide and april they had amazing chemistry

  8. Thank you!

I'm still trying to give Capp a chance. He's had some good moments, but nothing earth-shattering.

I agree about the original Chicago MD casting. I've seen tidbits for the newer cast, and I know it will include April and Chicago PD's Halstead's brother.

  9. I saw tension between Severide and April, but no chemistry. I'm going to give Rice a chance, but I don't know.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sylvie and Mills together, but I'm getting more of the platonic vibe from them.

  10. I would like to see them focus on Casey and Severide's relationship more.

  11. Is she really?? That's so funny because I was thinking how well they did with casting because she looks like him!

I agree with the whole Severide thing - stop using him as the bridge! Give him something real and meaningful.

Completely agree with you on Rice/Severide/Mills. I can't figure out what it is about Rice, but I don't like him.

And yes! We all knew she was with Cruz because he's comfortable and nice. There was never any spark.

  12. It's been bothering me too that Casey acts like he and Dawson never dated. I definitely don't want her with Rice, and call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind seeing her with Welch.

I really didn't care too much for portions of this week either. Again, give Severide something real and meaningful. I'm tired of these flings.

    LOVE Herrmann. Can't wait!

  13. Ah yes, Brett and Severide should start dating. And soon after that 51 will turn into a war zone and Cruz and Severide will probably put each other in the hospital.
