The Vampire Diaries - Let Her Go - Review

22 Feb 2015

As it turned out, this episode was every bit as sad as we might have expected, given its subject matter dealing with Liz's funeral.  It was even more heartbreaking in many ways than I anticipated and dealt out its share of utterly fascinating, deep character moments and interactions ripe for analysis.  I'm sure this will be a much-discussed episode in that regard.  There were also some twists and turns that I found quite frustrating as well, because how could one not?  Let's look back at "Let Her Go."

Even the title of the episode represented a bit of a more complex wordplay than we've seen of late.  The Season 6 episode titles have by and large been the names of songs from the '90's, tying in with the theme of the 1994 prison world.  This week, while it would have been all to easy to dub the episode "Let Her Cry" after the Hootie and the Blowfish song (and by the way, total props to last week's being called "Stay," presumably after the Lisa Loeb song), "Let Her Go" is, to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong, commenters!) not a '90's song.  It might be named after the Passenger song from last year, which has previously been featured on the show.  Interestingly, there's also a telling line of dialogue wherein Damon tells Stefan, "Today, let her in."  Caroline needs to, but cannot, let Liz go.  And Stefan needs to learn to let Caroline in.  Life doesn't always have the timing that an often painfully perfectionist nature like Caroline's would crave, and that's one lesson this episode imparts clearly.
"I can't do worse, okay?  I shouldn't have to."  From the episode's very first scene, with a flashback to child Caroline telling her mother, "I think I'll always need you," the emotions were enough to make a particularly uptight Vulcan weep openly.  Caroline decided to give all the scooby gang members tasks to do in order to help Liz's funeral go more smoothly.  She repeatedly assured herself and others that she just needed to get through that one day, the day of the funeral, and then she'd be okay.  This became a highly significant point later in the episode.

There was some very intriguing content regarding Damon and Caroline's relationship in this episode.  Due to his manipulative treatment of her in season 1, this has always been an awkward relationship, one that could never really see its way to any kind of comfort zone.  In fact, I've always wished the relationship had been developed in a less aggressively disturbing way back in the days of Damon's evil and more progressively improved over the seasons that followed, but it never happened.  In this episode, we saw some evidence of the remaining weirdness between the two, and the hope that there could be a brighter side to their future interactions.  While Caroline tersely dismissed the idea of commiserating with Damon, and he dispensed some perhaps well-meaning, probably too-blunt advice about how the worst of her grieving was yet to come, the storm clouds between these two were still all too obvious.  Yet, despite his own grief for Liz and the way her passing reminded Damon of the death of his own mother, worsening his mood, Damon managed to put his own issues aside and make up for both his frequent harsh attitude towards Caroline (such as his accusations at her after she'd fed Liz her blood a little while back) and his inability to eulogize his own mother.  Damon's eulogy to Liz was beautiful, giving Caroline the assurances of her mother's pride in her wonderful qualities that she needed to hear, as well as the respectful, reverent farewell the Sheriff needed.

I also loved the simple, stark loveliness of Caroline's song for her mother.  While showing the fragile resilience with which Caroline was just barely able to express her love for Liz amid her near-crippling grief, it also gave us an absolutely priceless look on Stefan's face as she sang.  After Stefan's expressions of confusion and inaction regarding his feelings for Caroline earlier in the episode, his look of surprise, being totally impressed, and awed by Caroline during her song was a nice reminder that Stefan's reversion to overcomplicating or side-stepping his feelings could be set aside by such a moment of perfect clarity.
The scene earlier on of Damon advising Stefan about the latter's relationship with Caroline was one that quickly became a point of contention among the fanbase after the scene was teased online before the episode aired.  For those who feared Damon was telling Stefan that Caroline was flat-out not "the one," that really wasn't the context.  It had more to do with Damon saying that if Stefan didn't think Caroline was the one, he owed it to her not to string her along.  Damon asked if Stefan's feelings for Caroline reminded him of how he felt the other two times he's been in love, with Katherine and Elena.  This actually led to quite a fulfilling pay-off later in the episode, as the two brothers discussed the situation once more after the funeral:

Stefan: "I think you were wrong about Caroline. I realize that I may not be able to explain what I feel for her, but it is something, and yeah, maybe all love isn't true love in the messed up way that you and I have experienced it, but I think this could turn into something even better."

Damon: "Well then, brother, stop wasting your time sitting here with me."

But since all relationships on this show have to feature missed opportunities and confessions prepared moments too late to save others, of course by the time Stefan showed up at Caroline's ready to discuss their relationship, she had already made a fateful decision of another kind.
Elena picked up on the weirdness of Caroline's "just have to get through today" mantra and followed her friend home to investigate.  I absolutely loved how this showed the depth of their friendship and Elena's thoughtful concern for Caroline, especially since Elena herself understands grief better than most.  For those of us who have felt Elena's focus on her friendships too decreased lately, this was a treat.  But while Elena was able to figure out that Caroline must be planning to turn off her emotions the next day, and did her best to dissuade her, her efforts were so ineffectual that Caroline actually snapped her bestie's neck and ditched her.  Coming from Caroline, these were grave and shocking actions, though it was obvious enough that no words of Elena's were going to convince her not to flip the switch.  Plus, Caroline's speech to Elena about the latter's hypocrisy was dead-on, even though Elena's own regret over her switch-flipping, memory-erasing ways were sincere:
after Elena came out of her self-inflicted fog, both times the worst of the pain was over.  Why should Elena, or Stefan for that matter, be the only ones allowed to take the easy way out?

This, of course, leads us to the seemingly inevitable loss of Caroline's humanity and feelings for the time being, and the probably emergence of Dark!Caroline, which should be truly fascinating to watch.  We've seen before that tricks such as turning off humanity and erasing memories can't completely take away that glimmer of the person's true, better self hiding underneath.  It should be awesome to see what will finally convince Caroline to come back into the light.
Hooray for Bonnie's return!  Fantastically, in addition to the utterly compelling A plot about Caroline's issues, we also got plenty of Bon Bon at her most badass in the B plot.  After using her road trip to regain her power and finally having all the ingredients she needed for the eclipse, Bonnie was shocked to discover that she was apparently phasing back and forth between 1994-land and a second prison world with some mysterious evidence in it indicating that the Salvatores were somehow connected to this place.  The eerie strangeness and unpredictability of this part of the episode were excellent, and while I feared Bonnie would get trapped in the second prison world (which would have been awful), thankfully she managed to get herself home.  However, this happened right after she got a good look at the resident of the second prison world, awesomely setting up a new plotline with some very cool possibilities.

After greeting Damon back home and leaping into his arms for the best "Bamon" moment to date, Bonnie shared with him the footage she'd captured of the mysterious woman from Prison World 2.  Yup, as we might have guessed based on the repeated references to Mama Salvatore of late, it was Lily.  But why is Stefan and Damon's mother trapped in the prison world after having been so long presumed dead of mortal, non-magical causes?  Was she rightfully imprisoned like Kai, or wrongfully punished?  And who banished Mama Salvatore there?  Another, earlier Gemini Coven member?  Someone else?  Hmm.

Jo, Alaric, and Kai had their own C plot, and while the Kai part of it was kind of underwhelming, the Jo and Alaric scenes were delightful.  I think having Kai deal with the results of merging with Luke and getting some of his brother's goodness could have been done in a more complex and rewarding manner.  Instead of seeing his horrible evil side grapple with the unwanted moral urges, we just kind of get this vague "okay, I'm a better person now" collapse into nothingness that is a disservice to Chris Wood's amazing performance and development of Kai's character.  I'm definitely disappointed by the way Kai is seemingly being quietly ushered out as a Big Bad.  We don't even know much about his motives anymore or his plans, and none of the main characters among the good guys even seem to care.  Meh.

Kai and Jo were both sick, presumably because Kai took Luke's magic instead of Jo's as was intended.  After Jo agreed to give Kai her magic in order to save all the members of their coven who would otherwise die, Kai took off with said magic, but not before whispering in Jo's ear the true reason for her illness.  As it turns out, Jo is pregnant!  In an adorable scene reminiscent of an endearingly goofy romcom, Alaric proposed, then explained to Jo that his doing so had nothing to do with her suddenly being pregnant.  In fact, he'd already bought the ring a while ago.  When he took that ring out, it was such an ultimate "Awww!" moment!  Though the love between Jo and Alaric has been so quickly advanced, mainly because they only get so much screentime per episode, it is sweet and provided a pleasant bit of respite in an otherwise very dark and melancholy episode.  It is a little bizarre that Ric didn't go to Liz's funeral, but that seems to have had more to do with the writer's convenient need to tuck him away in this subplot (aided by the common sense issue of Jo being sick) than anything else.

Elsewhere in the episode, we had Tyler showing up drunk to the funeral, to be turned away by a super-judgy, super-scowly Matt.  There's no doubt that Matt did the right thing by preventing Tyler from attending in such a state, but he just has a knack for being insufferable lately whether he's right or wrong.  Later, after Tyler sobered up and reconnected with Matt following the services, Matt informed his pal that he's signed them both up for a police training program so that they can make a difference like Liz did.  This had the combined effect of being kind of cute but also promising a probably dull Matt-and-Tyler-as-cops situation for the future.  We'll see where this leads.

  1. the most heart-breaking part in this episode for me was when the police officer tried to contact sheriff forbes. holy moly I was just so shocked...do they actually do that? because I was lying on the floor crying...

  2. That scene was so sad and in all honesty it seemed a little harsh

  3. I have seen this method used on another show (drawing a blank on which one it was, but it was recent) and think it is probably really used, but I don't know if it is generally used at the actual funeral or rather back at the station as I saw it on the other show. I'd be interested to know! Mega sad for sure.

  4. Great review V! Love how fluent and well layered its written!
Probably one of the beat VD episodes ever, it had all and I enjoyed every single part of it, except Matt proposibg a killer job to Tyler.
Caroline and Elena's final scene was so powerful, maybe the only good thing out of Bonnie's imprisoment is that these spent much more time together.
I hated Caroline pushing Stefan to an answer but again it felt real, in her obssessive maner to control everything. The funeral was really gripping and I enjoyed the way it all played out.
The twist about Mama Salvatore being in a prison world was great, but even more the fact that she was trapped 70ish years after she died was even more intriguing.
    Can't wait for March 12th.

  5. I think it was on Elementary earlier this year (End of Watch). It has become a tradition in funerals for law enforcement members to honor their fallen.

  6. Another excellent episode-Julie wrote & directed it pretty well.
1.Caroline-Definitely the MVP of this episode.Candice killed it and i'm glad we'll finally
get to see dark caroline we've all been waiting for since 2nd season.I
didn't like the fact they made it seem like stefan's late response was
somehow the deciding factor in this. The funeral was very gracefully filmed.Loved the young caroline flashback & her singing as well.
2.Stefan-Male punching bag of this series and this episode proved that.I'm glad he finally decided to give their new-found relationship(Steroline) a chance for real but as
expected,he was a little too late.I'm not feeling stefan in general this
season but for caroline's sake,i would like to see him help caroline
    get through this dark phase.
3.Elena-She was a good friend to caroline after a long time and i liked that.I almost cheered when she got her neck snapped-totally saw that coming!
4.Damon-Loved the eulogy,it was short, simple and yet profound.I am loving his character
this season. The flashbacks were really well done.We haven't seen a lot
of brother bonding scenes this past seasons,so this was a welcome
    surprise.
5.Alaric-Jo-kai-I missed kai last episode. He's great as a
semi-villain and i would love to know how his story progress now that he
has jo's power permanently.I hope he sticks around at least until the
finale.I totally predicted Jalaric wedding last week but the baby bit
was a bit surprising.I really hope alaric gets his happy ending at least
but this is TVD after all,so i wouldn't hold my breath. Please live jo,i
would love to see alaric as a happy father. He'd be great at it.
6.Bonnie-She's BACK!The scene between bamon at the end was pure gold.We missed you, girl!
7.Mama Salvatore-They spoiled her name in the credits and then dropped the
hint of mutiple prison worlds,so it was very clear she was trapped there
in other dimension/timeline alongside bonnie. The special effects were
also cool.I can't wait to find out who locked her there and why?
I'm waiting to see stefan's reaction when he learns his mom is alive. That would be priceless.
Can't believe we'll have to wait for 12th march to know what happens next.
Only funny thing about this episode-matt and tyler enlisting for police business!GTFOOH!
I kinda missed enzo but the episode was so good,i didn't mind TBH.His revenge plan can wait.
TVD is really delivering this past couple of episodes and i can't wait to
see what they have in store for us for this last batch of episodes.

Only two confusions-1.Why didn't they cast for a younger damon for this
episode? They are only 7-8 years apart. The age difference looked like
    20!!

& 2.Why on earth they never mentioned the reason jeremy couldn't made it back for the funeral?
Bad continuity writer!(I'm talking to you, julie)

  7. I really wish Caroline would have told Elena that it didn't matter what Stefan had said, she would have made the same decision. But she implied that if Stefan had said the right thing to her she wouldn't have turned it off and I hate that - because it makes it all about Stefan.

I also think it was a bit unfair to call Elena out on Damon forcing her to turn off her humanity by using the sire-bond. Elena wasn't able to make that choice herself, Damon made it for her - so I don't think it's a fair comparison.

I would like for No Humanity Caroline to be very different from what we saw with Elena, but I'm worried that won't be the case. I also have zero interest in seeing Stefan trying to fix her/get her to turn it back on. I'd rather see Bonnie & Elena trying to help Caroline.

  8. I remember seeing it once too and I thought it was really sad....I think it could have been in the first season of Homeland, at Tom Walker's memorial service, but I can't confirm it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Awesome review. This was such a good episode. The memorial service was incredible. I think Caroline turning off her emotions is the only part I wasn't crazy about, because it's been done so much. I liked the twist with all of the prison worlds and I wonder if Kai is going to start wreaking havoc by releasing the prisoners.

Of course, my favorite scene was the end with Bonnie and Damon. Those two have come so far together and I love this side of Damon that Bonnie brings out. The pancakes was a nice touch...it was kind of odd that we never saw Damon feeding on blood the entire time. We saw him eating pancakes, pork-rinds, some soup that Bonnie made, but never blood. I thought they needed blood all the time.

  10. on the age thing: yeah even though they did a good job of making Ian look younger it was still strange seeing Ian instead of a 17 year old actor playing his younger self, i would've been much better

    ReplyDelete
  11. i'm trying really hard to think how no humanity Caroline would be different than The Ripper or no humanity Elena but it's really hard

    ReplyDelete
  12. on Kai: i know it's weird because i don't the bad guy to get the upper hand but if it turns Kai into the Big Bad again then i'm all for it, i hate that he's been basically demoted to antagonist and Enzo taking his place as the Big Bad. On Damon: there was a hospital in the 1994 Prison World so there must've been plenty of blood for him to have

  13. Amazing review - Thank You. You are spot on this was a great episode with so much character development with much anticipated analysis.

    - Stefan - Yes, great depiction of what he was going through and over-complicating his feelings for Caroline by comparing them to yes some "messy" past relationships. IF anything this relationship could be less complicated since = enter the complication "Damon" is not in the picture. I can't wait to see how powerful this relationship will become once Caroline comes out of the "no humanity" side of things and starts her new life with Stefan.

    - Caroline - I keep going back & forth about her humanity and the decision to turn it off - I may just chalk it up to the writers wanting to show a darker side of Car., but she was just at her mothers funeral where the entire town heard how extraordinary her mother & her friends believe she is and it just seems to me that she is dishonoring her mother's memory a bit by turning it off and going on a killing spree - it might be too soon to rush to judgement but I really don't think TVD is going to let this dark Car. get away with some blood on her hands.

    - Elena - You got that soooo right. Poor Elena she wanted to do what was right by her friend but she really did not have an argument to stand on - she erased her memories and turned off her humanity and both tragic events turned out OK. You can tell Caroline was expecting this conversation with Elena and she was desperate so Elena's reasons rang hallow.

    - Kai - I wondered if Kai was faking it to deceive Jo out of her magic but with the prison worlds collapsing I guess he should be believed - unless he faked a suicide and made it looked like he was dying by magically hurting himself.

    - Bonnie - Bamon moment was great - I loved how naturally they went back to bickering the moment she returned.

    - Lily - I get the feeling that Lily is a complicated character who did a number on her boys. I do not expect to see her supporting either of her boys choice in women - this will be good. If you look at the timeline Lily was not dead, or in the prison world from 1857 - 1903 my guess is that she was not off baking cookies or knitting quilts. I think Lily might have a dark side - could she have been turned into a vampire and like Stefan - became a ripper? Time will tell.

    - Jo/Alaric - bring on the wedding - can't wait.

Once again, Thank you great recap - with more discussion & analysis to come.

  14. Thank you :) ! I agree, it is frustrating that Caroline wanted Stefan to make a big proclamation at that time, yet it's believable given her personality. The ending with Caroline deciding to flip the switch was disappointing in one sense and yet set up interesting things to come. Excellent episode all in all. Excited to see what comes next!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks! Great observations about the episode, and I agree, in the flashback of the brothers, the age difference between the actors was distracting and almost funny! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. another Salvatore Ripper? that'd be cool

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes! That was it! Thanks for that, it would have driven me crazy not remembering which show it was, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks :) Good point about Damon not drinking blood in the prison world. Weirdly, I never thought about that, but maybe the writers attempted to distract us from that with Bamon cuteness.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks very much! :) Yes, can't wait to see what happens with Lily, and I certainly expect her to have a dark side to her in one way or another.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hope they find a way to put a new twist on it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh - and I almost forgot - Yes, please TVD end this feud between Damon / Caroline - it has gone on long enough - Caroline clearly needs to articulate to Damon why she hates him so much. I agree early in S1 the writers were trying to portray a very dark, dangerous, impulsive, egotistic, lack of control, yet sexy vampire. The Damon we know today has come a long way from those earlier days. Early on Elena said something about Damon that has stuck with me - she said she believes that everything Damon has done - every move he has made in his life he believes he was doing it out of love - love for Katherine - so if Car. was a means to an end to get what he wanted he did not care what Human Lives he destroyed in the process - he was on a mission and that was to "FREE KATHERINE" - But, he quickly learned he was deceived and him and Caroline have never really kissed and made up from those first impressions.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He treated her horribly in season 1,there's no coming back from that IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  23. saving her doesn't count?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes,it does in a way but as she herself said-she doesn't have more than formal with him & i totally relate to that.If it happened to me,i don't think i'll be as decent as caroline confronting that person in my life.Saving your life can soften the bitterness but doesn't make okay all of a sudden, sometimes ever.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would say what happened between Damon and Car. pales in comparison to the other men in her life that have let her down who she truly cared about. Just to name a few her father (who BTW tortured his own daughter), Tyler who almost hit her for sleeping with Klaus, if it hadn't been for Stefan and Stefan who just left town w/o saying good-bye and when he does show up he drops of his vamp. girlfriend for Caroline to take care of. So if you ask me - Damon can get in line behind all these men in Car's life who truly owe her an apology - and w/o it she has some how found a way to forgive them. Yes, their is NO excuse for Damon being mean to Caroline and she deserves a formal apology - but I am just asking for some perspective.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Also - didn't they keep a freezer full in the basement of the Salvatore boarding house?

    ReplyDelete
  27. yep so that blood mystery isn't a mystery, just because they didn't show him drinking blood on screen doesn't mean he DIDN'T drink. They don't always show the other vampires drink blood in the show, doesn't mean they DON'T

    ReplyDelete
  28. especially when she talked to Elena about finally understanding why Elena fell in love with Damon

    ReplyDelete
  29. They very rarely show the vampires drinking blood now.

When have we seen Caroline or Stefan drinking blood this season? I don't think we have.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey Gwennie, they've all sworn off blood for "eggplant" and sandwiches. It's a new day. lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. So true....I guess if he had to keep feeding off Bonnie that would have definitely ruined the Bamon moments! As someone else said, he probably got the blood from a nearby hospital (assuming they had enough), but guess I never really noticed that the vampires in TVD actually liked to eat normal food like pancakes and pork-rinds.....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Right honestly - I just can't figure them out - we have seen moments of connection, concern and just plain being helpful towards each other - but this rivalry continues - the writers seem to be saving it up for some special moment for it all to come to a head - and with no-humanity Caroline we may have just reached that boiling point.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Was the actress playing Lily.. just on Castle playing the well.. crazee Dr trying to cut up Beckett?

(Im not sure what to make of all this prison dimensions in the Vampire Diaries. I mean they are a good way to setup some character alone time.. but I think like the Doppleganger business they can be a bit .. overused)

    ReplyDelete
  34. You do have a point.Maybe The difference is all those instances happened long after she became a vampire and damon's misdeed were in season 1 when she was a human. So,maybe after she was turned, those hatred became even more intense. It is after all,a strong form of emotion. That's why this case will always be a little more different than others in her mind.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Don't get me wrong...I like Damon, but didn't he basically compel Caroline to sleep with him and kept her locked up for a while? That's essentially rape. No amount of perspective would make him sound better than Tyler of Stefan. I actually think that Tyler had every reason to be angry and hurt with Caroline for sleeping with the person who killed his mother, especially since they were still supposedly close. And Tyler shaking her doesn't compare to the violence Damon has shown her and others...or to the fact that this is a show where people break each other's neck for the most trivial of reasons. Stefan was profoundly grieved over losing a brother he had known for over over 150 years. He may have been a jerk, but I'd cut him some slack. As I recall, Elena handled losing Damon very poorly too. So as much as I like Damon, I would never compare anything that Tyler or Stefan did to what Damon did to Caroline. Furthermore, Tyler and Stefan have a history of being supportive friends. LIz' death was actually the first time that I've seen Damon make a sincere attempt to reach out to Caroline, so if it's taken her this long to forgive him, that probably has something to do with it. I think Damon has definitely matured since returning from the prison world, so I'm betting that Caroline will eventually see that, but I can't fault her for taking a while to warm up to him. She doesn't owe him anything, and if LIz had known what Damon did to her daughter, she most definitely wouldn't have made picked him for her eulogy

    ReplyDelete
  36. In 1993 that was Zack's house, so I don't know if they would have kept 4 month's supply of blood.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Elena was constantly slurping blood drinks in Alaric's lecture.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No...but clearly food seems to serve as a decent substitute most of the time, which was news to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. what DOES stefan drink now anyway? is he still on animal blood or is he slowly on human blood?

    ReplyDelete
  40. i know this is probably way off but what if it's DAMON who gets her to turn her humanity back on

    ReplyDelete
  41. At first, I was really annoyed with Stefan for his response, but now that I think of it....Caroline really shouldn't have put him on the spot with a question about their future after just one kiss. That would probably be an unreasonable question for anybody,

I'm guessing Mama Salvatore was already a vampire or had vampire blood in her when she "died" (seeing that she didnt' age), As you said, it was 70 years after she supposedly died. but then she must have been on the run from someone for 70 years before being imprisoned.....probably Klaus, LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  42. no i'm just guessing, it's definitely not a hope

    ReplyDelete
  43. At that point Caroline hadn't anything to hold on, and the only thing that could maybe keep her overfloat was her fellings for S. That was maybe the only reason to keep them, cause if he had feelings she wouldn't turn hers off not to hurt him.

Mama Salvatore could've been a Traveler , cause of the doppelganger bloodline. I hope they introduce something new mythology wise to keep it more intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I loved her fight with Elena, one of the better written ones.
What disappointed U? The set up is perfect and I'm intrigued to see how they will knock some humanity back into Caroline ans how well she get along with possibly devious Mama Salvatore.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Don't get me wrong. I don't think Caroline should have asked Stefan that question, but I can completely empathize with why she did, given her state at the time. People don't always do the most rational thing when they are grieving.

You're right...she could be a Traveler, I forgot about that possibility. I hope it's not that, though.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you! .Part of the reason all the other male characters have such a weak storyline is that most of the focus is placed on Damon. I don't see why he has to be everyone's hero and confidante. In the first two seasons they did a much better job of involving all the main cast members and now it's become the Damon/Elena/Caroline show which is why I don't blame Paul Weasley for wanting out or Steve McQueen for leaving (although I am enjoying Bamon). Caroline will eventually stop disliking Damon, if she hasn't already, and that's enough for me. I wouldn't even call their relationship much of a feud, because they've generally been civil enough to each. I don't know why their relationship bothers people so much. They don't have to be besties.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I get her asking him as well. Grief is a tricky thing, especially when every emotion you have is hightened. So far I like how they have written the SC storyline so lets see how the move further along with it.

Making Mama Salvatore a Vamp would be somehow to ordinary so I hope rhey surprise us. Maybe she is obssessed with someone/something and will o everything necessary to get it. A Original connection would be neat, especially connecting her with Elijah ;-)

  48. No JP has confirmed compulsion happened AFTER they slept together - just like Katherine compelled Stefan after they slept together because he was to afraid of her - same situation with Damon & Caroline.

Not sure what you mean by locked her up for a while - unless you are referencing when her father locked her up to torture her?

My argument is simple this - the show, it's characters - including Caroline and discussions outside the show by JP have Never confirmed (once again JP confirmed Damon compelled Caroline AFTER they slept together) Damon "raped" Caroline so if you take that off the table - what are Damon's sins?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Good point - I never thought of it that way - but Damon helped Liz & Caroline get over a rough patch when she became a vampire - if Caroline hated Damon at that point she would have never let her mother stay in his house - and Damon tried to convince Liz that Caroline was still his daughter. Caroline saved Damon from the deputies and Damon saved Caroline from the wolf pack. Everything seemed fine up until the point where Elena was choosing between the brothers and Elena turned into a vampire that is when Caroline's true feelings really came out. Do you remember "girl-bonding" night when Elena was sired to Damon? Elena asks Caroline what attracted her to Damon to make Her (ie Caroline) want to sleep with him? Caroline responds - I did not know what a narcissistic egotistic maniac he was. Was Caroline just wanting to control which brother Elena ended up with? Maybe in her own sweet controlling way she thought Elena was making a huge mistake and she was trying to "control" her decisions. And as a vampire - her controlling nature is magnified.

  50. Just disappointing in the sense that it is always frustrating to see a character one cares about undone and pushed to scary extreme measures by grief. I meant more in the sense of my sympathizing with Caroline and wanting better for her. Otherwise, I agree, it's a great set-up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think she is a vamp either. Why would someone send an ordinary vamp to a prison world? Just because she's bad? Well, then why is Klaus not in a prison world yet? Maybe she is something new .. something we haven't seen before.

  52. Wonderful review, Virginia. Thanks! This was a great episode. TVD seems to have found its way back this season, although I know not everyone will agree.

I want to weigh in on the Caroline/Damon issue since it's been discussed a lot in comments here and in the past, and was touched on in the episode. Feelings have run high about Damon's treatment of Caroline in Season 1. I don't want to rehash all that now. Rape or no rape, at the very least he used her like a toy with no regard for her humanity. He was deep into bad boy mode back then. We know that he did do good things for Caroline in subsequent seasons, in fact he almost died as a result of defending her from Tyler's attack. But whatever good he did later is separate from his earlier behavior.

I would like to see Damon examine his conscience (there is one in him, we know that) and then find the humility to make amends to Caroline by admitting any wrongs done to her and expressing sorrow for them. I would also like to see Caroline forgive Damon for his wrongs, not for his sake but for her own. Forgiving someone doesn't say that what they did was right. Forgiving frees YOU from the hatred and blame you hold in your heart which causes you to continue to suffer the emotional hurt and damage from the past, which can never be changed. Damon should approach Caroline first. She might not accept his amends but hopefully she would, and offer her forgiveness. Getting this issue out in the open is the only way to resolve it so their relationship, if there can even be one, would at least be free of rancor. They don't have to become best buds.

Of course none of the above can happen until Caroline turns her humanity back on. As someone else has suggested here, it would be nice if Damon could/would try to help her to do that.

  53. "but Damon helped Liz & Caroline get over a rough patch when she became a vampire"

I remember that Gwen....wasn't that when Damon tried to kill Caroline and Bonnie was going to burn him up for it? lol I guess death would put and end to a rough patch.

  54. It's a tradition to honor fallen cops at funerals...it's very sad and respectful...last call

  55. I've noticed that too - that Damon keeps getting "bonding" moments with other characters. My thoughts were that 1) the show is sneaking in "good" Damon without making it official, 2) they're setting us up for a Damon killing spree (I doubt it at this point), 3) this is the Damon goodbye tour and he's leaving the show. Or 4) this is now the Damon show and we should just pave over that and accept it ;)

Stefan had a strong beginning (well, I liked it) but the last 2-3 epis he's been totally side-lined. Maybe the next episode.

  57. I like this post and think you have a handle on what's going on...... I'm going with a 1/3 on this one.....I think Ian is done after this season and their not fighting too hard because they already been given S7...... He'll sacrifice for Elena Bonnie or Stefan and either the true death (again) or body jump for S7. As much as some fans rail against it Elena WILL go back to human.
Damon will turn out to be Stefan's half brother, and Enzo will turn out to be Damon's half brother (dmac) There's a neat little package...:)) Stefan's secret about Sarah will come out and Damon's secret about knowing their mother is alive will come out.
TVD use to present a lot bigger challenge to predict. Stefan will be front and center again as soon as they quit teasing Steroline. 2-3 eps

    ReplyDelete
  58. Haha, thanks. Actually, I mostly think it's 1), but eh, who knows.

Elena human or dead - I always thought that could be more of a series finale thing, but eh.

I'm totally not seeing the half-brothers thing right now. I'm not against any of it, just not seeing it.

They quit teasing Steroline?? I thought it was still full on.

    ReplyDelete
  59. No that was not it. I am sure if you think real hard you can remember the scene. :-)

  61. And they call themselves vampires!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I thought Stefan helped Caroline get over a rough patch when she became a vampire. Damon was still somewhat antagonistic towards Caroline.

  63. PS...I knew if I opened up this can of worms it would bring on the real Damon fans. My bad.

  64. "They quit teasing Steroline?? I thought it was still full on."

    That's the tease. xD

  65. You would. lolololol Tell ya the truth, I love those little purple critters too. :))

  66. Bring your can of worms.... We'll go fishin', girl.....as soon as the ice melts that is. :))

    ReplyDelete
  67. OH I remember it well.....Damon rolling around on the blacktop with flames all around.....Bonnie ready to put the finishing touches on the Damon rack of ribs and Elena singing "can't we all just get along"....... did I miss anything?????

    ReplyDelete
  68. The scene I was referencing was S2X5 "Kill or be Killed" - Liz tells Damon to keep Caroline away from her that her daughter is gone and Damon replies she is your daughter Liz and you have no idea how wrong you are about her being gone. Later Caroline tells Elena she is afraid to go home so Caroline spends the night at the Salvatore house - Elena informs Damon that Caroline is staying and he supports her decision.

    I just re-watched a few snipits - great episode

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes - Poor Anna - she died that episode - that was sad. But I believe she has moved onto the flash so as they say...1 door closes....

Good thing Elena was able to convince Bonnie to save Damon's hide otherwise we would have never gotten to see all those epic Delena moments and Bamon friendship in the prison world.

    ReplyDelete
  70. We all have regrets.....lv ya :)) How ya been, girl,,, Still defending your boy I see, good for you...... You picked the tough side of the triangle to make a stand on, but you did it well
Actually that would have been a good end to the series.... all Elena had to do was say " burn the Bit*h" Bonnie was all burners on. lol And Stefan was taking care of Caroline...... Oh wait, was that Stefan helping Caroline over the rough patch?????????? See ya, hon

    ReplyDelete
  71. I guess your'e just referring to sins committed towards Caroline, right? In season 1, when Damon and Caroline started making out, Damon bit her and she screamed in terror. They hadn't technically "slept" together yet, so it's safe to say that everything that happened after that point was NOT voluntary on her part. So either Damon 1. compelled Caroline to not be scared and had sex with her, 2. had sex with an extremely terrified person who probably didn't want to sleep with anymore (rape) and 3. had sex with an unconscious person Caroline (ew...and also rape) . Since Plec claims that the compulsion happened after the sex, that leaves options 2 and 3, which are actually worse! Caroline then woke up the next morning confused, tried to escape, Damon wouldn't let her and attacked her again (I'm guessing that Plec will deny that anything happened then, since we don't actually see it). Then, Damon basically compels over a period of time to do a lot of things for him. So, if Caroline wants to hold a grudge for that, then she has every right to. And Damon saying something nice about Caroline to Liz or letting her stay at his place really doesn't make up for that (especially since he did it for Elena).
I don't think that Damon has shown true growth prior to this season, so my guess is that this is the season that Caroline will start to see him differently and eventually come around. Just as this was the season that Bonnie also started to see him differently. My feeling is that the burden should be on Damon to make amends and to prove that he has changed and this is

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wow, how did you know... I love fishing...but not ice fishing, so I believe I will save these can of worms for another day...besides No-Humanity Caroline, I expect to be hearing truth bombs left and right and solving this feud mystery...you know straight from the horses mouth.

  73. I'm with you Virginia....I generally don't enjoy these kinds of stories where good characters become bad and completely undone.

  74. Very balanced and thoughtful recap of this situation. I do have 1 theory if I may suggest. Caroline, I believe saw Elena/Stefan's relationship through rose colored glasses - they were epic, fairy tale romance and Stefan was Price Charming - she was all on board with team Stefan/Elena and during that time, while she never liked Damon she tolerated him, I do not recall hearing any strong vocal bitter comments thrown his way. Also - KEY POINT - Caroline was very loyal to Elena during this time.

But then Elena became a vampire and Stefan/ Elena's relationship began to splinter. Elena turned to Damon for help and because the brothers were not in a good place, Stefan turned to Caroline. I believe this is when Caroline went from being team Stefan / Elena w/ loyalties to Elena to Team Stefan, loyal to Stefan. Similar to when couples break up in real life - most friends stay with who they were originally friends with but sometimes the friendships change and switch teams - like in this case. Stefan began spending a lot of time with Caroline. He depended on her to keep him in check - sober sponsor - what a great Nobel cause for a controlling person like Caroline. Stefan and Caroline's friendship grows and so does Caroline's loyalties to Stefan more so than her friend Elena. Caroline's feelings toward Stefan start to confuse her she wants things to go back to team Stefan / Elena she begins to vocalize her disappointment in Elena and choice in Damon - remember when she told Stefan about "Why she had a thing for him"? 1 reason she gave was because she could not believe that Elena could let such a great guy go. She begins to use the same language as Stefan's regarding Elena falling for Damon - how disappointed she is in Elena, how wrong Damon is for her, he is a monster, worst choice ever etc.... She even begins to betray's Elena's loyalty - by discussing Elena/Damon relationship with Stefan and telling Stefan, Elena slept with Damon. With all these confusing feelings regarding Stefan going on, Caroline does everything she can to avoid them - she tries her resolve her relationship with Tyler, she once again encourages Elena to dump Damon (very obvious) break-up breakfast - needing certainty Elena is 1000% over Stefan (remember when she accused them of being make-out buddies again), she even gets with Klaus so resolve any old feelings believing maybe this is the reason she might be restless, she does everything she can think of but deal with her feelings for Stefan for fear of rejection - it is during these times that I see her become more vocal and bitter towards Damon and making it clear her dislike for him. I think she is projecting onto Damon - and possible not knowingly - what she is confused and can't have and that is Stefan. Lexi dislike Damon in a similar manner because of her loyalties to Stefan - I see Caroline behaving in the same manner - with 1 exception - Caroline was falling for Stefan.

Sorry for the long response - I wrote quickly before work so hopefully this theory makes some sense - Like you said...I hope Caroline can articulate her true feelings for both these brothers and who knows - truth bombs may come up while Caroline is w/o her humanity - I guess we will find out.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Now look at that......two more things we agree on.....fantastic......fishing &
Caroline truth bombs .....hahahaha I think she'll have a stinger for everybody....can't wait.
Ice fishing is the only thing I haven't tried..... seriously, everything from casting net to bow fishing......Fly fishing is my fav...tie my own flys and make rods...shoot I've even raised chickens for their neck hackle to tye flys with. :)))

  76. Here is an article from JP regarding Caroline's and Damon's relationship in S1. She talks about how Damon feed on Caroline and used her crush on him to his advantage. No where does she mention - strong sexual abuse.

So you are leaving out one other option - did Damon really have sex with Caroline? In all their scenes together we see them, kissing, sleeping or Damon feeding on her - nothing building up to anything more.

  77. Isn't it generally accepted by everyone that they had sex? The show has never suggested otherwise. Damon even admitted it when he, Alaric and Stefan were discussing Caroline this season ("slept with" generally means "had sex wtih".) This is one of the many problems I have with TVD, which is that Plec often has her protagonists cross the line of morality without considering how it will look to viewers. If Plec wanted to do damage control, she probably should just backpeddle and make up a scene where Damon tells Caroline that nothing actually happened (sexually) but until they decide to somthing like that, I think it's safe to assume that they had sex. But aside from that, he took advantage of her by compelling her and repeatedly feeding on her.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This whole Story Line is just very confusing ...because they showed exactly the same bedroom scene with Katherine and Stefan - So what are we to believe Katherine and Damon treated their victims exactly the same way? You are right not sure if they thought things through how it would come across on screen but I cannot believe they were intending on crossing the line.
We know Katherine was the queen of manipulation and some of that rubbed off on Damon - compelling their victims to get what they wanted - but in this situation Damon manipulated Caroline to get the women he loved out of a tomb - which totally backfired on him - so really when you think about it, it goes back to Katherine getting the upper hand.

My theory that Car./Damon never had sex was just that a theory - and w/ No-Humanity Caroline it would be a perfect time for it to come out. I can see why both would want to keep it a secret (reputation and all) - also I wonder if Stefan would see that as a + knowing Damon was never truly with Caroline.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think Caroline wanted clarification THAT day, because she was already planning on switching her humanity off. Tomorrow would've been no good, because she wouldn't care then.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, I agree. :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well we had the Stefan/Silas/Tom/PW show last season. It was a doppelganger nightmare. Swings and roundabouts. The last few Eps have seen a shift to more Caroline/Liz/Stefan SLs, and that looks set to continue for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Actually, Caroline owes Damon her life, a few times over now, and that of her mother. Liz got to have the dignity of a human death, and a beautiful send off with full honours, because of what Damon did to reverse her vamp blood experimentation. TBH, I don't really care about Damon and Caroline's dynamic that much, it doesn't bother me that they have this frenemy vibe, I kind of like it. I enjoy their snarky scenes much more than the serious ones.

    ReplyDelete
  83. But really Linzi, the day she puts her mom. in the ground?....That's a little over the top....immortal vampire could at least wait a day.... Sry having "the talk" with the casket in the background was a bit over the top...:))

    ReplyDelete
  84. nice, is that from Elena? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  85. oh so Caroline's feelings for stefan have been building for longer than season 5?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think it was poor writing to let Liz go to her grave never knowing what Damon did to her daughter...... Most of Damon's relationships are built on lies, so there's that. lol

    ReplyDelete
  87. Elena as a new vamp turned to Damon because she was "SIRED" to him.... Come on Gwen, you know the story. lol

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well yeah! of course, it is Caroline we are talking about. No time like the totally inappropriate! Caroline was on a mission, she was on a clock by her own design.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I like snarky frenemies - it's the "WHAT".... where did that over the top way to Judgy Caroline Bomb come from that I find hard annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Buckle up girl.... I think I know what's coming .... Judgy is going give way to blatant and pointed.... good luck. :))) Lets plan out fishing trip before it starts. :))

    ReplyDelete
  91. good point...... silly me I forgot it was Caroline.....:)))

    ReplyDelete
  92. That is my theory - I just find it strange that she was not as vocal about her disdain for Damon until Stefan asked her to be his sober sponsor. Honestly, I think it goes back to when she first became a vampire. Caroline and Stefan had some unique bonding moments - trust, friendship, loyalty all began during those first days of becoming a vampire. If you think about it "trust" is at the core of their relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Of course, I would never dispute she wanted him to know, only that she said the actual words.... which she didn't... lol Caroline was Team Stefan thru and thru.....Hey, I am too....

    ReplyDelete
  94. The show has been sneaking in "good" Damon all along, it is just more obvious now since he is doing much less "bad" stuff. Anyway, I would go with option 3 ;) Ian is leaving, and they are wrapping up Damon's series arc.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Wow -you make your own flies impressive now that's ambitious - and here I thought I was doing good by not hooking my ear or loosing as few flies as possible when I hit the river (those little things can get expensive).

Anyway enough fishing chit-chat - back to business what do you think of this Lily character - friend or foe or somewhere in-between?

    ReplyDelete
  96. You Fly Fish?..... Now I am impressed.....Have you heard the one about the guy that put an add in the fishing magazine for a mail order bride?..... Wanted, a woman who can clean and cook fish, must have boat and motor..... send picture of "boat and motor" lol Come on I know you chuckled.....
Have you ever fished with any really small flys? #22/24? It amazes me they hold a big fish.....

Lily is a piece of the puzzle for your boys redemption.... although I think it will be found out the he knew all along mom wasn't dead..... I wonder if he'll tell Stefan, he and Elena are trying to bring her back? I definitely think he and Stefan are half brothers and Lily is a witch..... There is a possibility Enzo is a half brother too.... Lot's of twists comin'

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yep, Love to fly fish when I can (Colorado, Montana) - and those little flies hooking those big monster fish -Yep the wonder of nature. No, have not heard about the Fly Fish Bride - I can just see the post "Wanted Fly Fish Bride - Come w/ Own Boat" - Too funny.

Damon appeared to be genuinely surprised that his mother was still alive - so I think both brothers believed her death in 1857. Damon will eventually tell Stefan's about Lily's predicament but he believes he failed Stefan once so he will not want to disappoint him again. Lily could be a witch - but I am hoping for a new supernatural creature - both Stefan and Sarah mentioned "angels".

Damon's redemption - well my guy has been working on it since S1, but Yes I agree he has been still holding something back and Lily may be the key. It will be a day of celebration when You finally admit Damon has redeemed himself!!! I am looking forward to it.

  98. Ya know, I feel for those that have never experienced to thrill of watching a big trout rise from the bottom of a river, slurp up your dry fly and jump when he feels the steel....it's primal....lol Have you ever really fished with 9 or 10x tippet... I fish Roaring River every year with my brothers... it's crystal clear and you have to go really lite to fool em.... On non windy days I fish a 1 wt fly rod ....tons of fun...:))) Catch 50+ a day sometimes but only keep dinner...

I think Damon knows Lily's not dead, but was surprised she show up. Im pretty sure she's witch material and Stefan thinks she's dead.... Guess both bros have their secrets.... Stefan / Sarah and Damon / Lily.... I do think your gona get your wish about and Angel.... In the books it was Elena, right? My guess is Damon... hows that for a twist? lololol

Don't worry girl, the minute I see Damon look someone in the eye and say with meaning "I'm Sorry" I'll be the first to acknowledge his redemption. Just don't give me the standard "actions not word" or read it in his "eye rolls" lol
Too bad they don't have a PM here, we could talk more fishing. :)))))
