Helix - M. Domestica - Review

After last episode revealed a lot of things, I expected this episode to follow suite. Whilst it did shed some light on some events, I find myself every episode continuing to question who created this virus/fungus, and why it was created.

"Call it what you want, it's genocide" Julia

Julia, who we see in past, is gathered around a table full of immortals. The reason I say the past is: unless Balleseros is an immortal now it can't possibly be her present, as he would have aged. Ilaria wants to eliminate 75% of the current population by using coordinated strikes, which by the sound of it is a virus there releasing. They have the cure, and will give it to those who are deemed essential. So in other words they are planning to reshape the world to what they want it to be. It also looks to me as if Ilaria are behind the on-goings at the Abbey, and started this whole thing.
We know the fungus is initially from the honey, but obviously something must have been put in the honey to make it contaminated. I think Peter brought the virus/disease/fungus or whatever you want to call it with him to the island. As I'm starting to consider that it wasn't engineered on the inside, but rather brought on to the island from the outside. As if I recall Soren's mum said this: "No one was sick before you got here, maybe you brought the disease from the outside" Maybe that was a hint, telling us to look beyond the Abbey. If Peter did bring it with him, I don't think he did it with any knowledge of what he was doing. I think it was Balleseros who gave him it, as we know they have been in contact recently. That could also be why they are so keen that Peter keep track of Alan, as they know he could be a huge threat to whatever they are planning.

Having said all that above, why would the immortals target just the island instead of the whole world like they planned to, what changed? Or are there two separate things happening, maybe they are using the island as a testing ground to see if it works, and then if it does they might release it into the world?

Also when Julia met with Durant, she said there is one other immortal who feels the way she does about killing all these humans, could that be Michael. She says that person is working on something promising, which could be that fungus. So many possibilities, I don't know which one I should stick with.

"I don't want him to be the father of my child" Amy

This episode revealed a lot about Michael's family, and how twisted it was. We find out that Agnes was indeed Anne's mother, and Amy's grandmother. What was disturbing though was that Michael is the father of all of them as he has sexual intercourse with his daughters when they come of age, and they each gave him another daughter, he has been doing it for years. To keep the line of succession going. I was glad to finally learn how he has so many daughters, as twisted as it is, I can't say I'm surprised by it.

Amy this episode played a big role, she doesn't want to bare Michael's child so attempts to make him lose control of his cult by creating an outbreak. She also sets Soren's mother free who creates serious problems for the CDC team. Like I said previously Amy is the smartest among them, and that was clearly shown this episode after she and Landry framed Anne. I can see a confrontation coming between Amy and Michael soon, and I wouldn't be surprised if she found a way to kill him. Another possibility is that she might succeed with her plot to make Michael lose control, which could be in her own push for power. She might even become head of the Abbey one day.

Elsewhere, Peter continues to irritate me. Despite him being imprisoned and tormented by Michael all episode he still reveals information about Sarah's pregnancy. Because he revealed that to Michael, I'm going to guess that Michael will somehow find a way to remove her baby, as he seemed delighted when he learned of an immortal child. Michael also knows Peter is working for Ilaria, the strange thing is how?
Does he have a way of communicating to the outside? He has to be getting his information from somewhere. It also appeared to me as if Michael knows that Ilaria want him dead or maybe alive. He said "Did Ilaria send you" as if he knew they would come one day. Even though he is an immortal he doesn't seem connected to Ilaria anymore, if anything he seems to have been cast out by them, as who would freely go to a remote island. He couldn't have just gone there for the fresh air... I used to think the island could be an origin story for the immortals, but it can't be, can it?

Other notes:
- That necklace Madam Durant had is the same symbol on the Abbey's walls. What does it mean?
- How long has Balleseros been working for Ilaria?
- In the present the outbreak has spread, why didn't they use the cure to save some people? Why didn't Julia give herself it?
- If there is no way of communicating to the outside, where is Michael getting his information from?
- What good will getting Alan to choke Sarah do if she can't die, since she is an immortal.
- What will Michael to with Anne? Will he kill another one of his daughters?
- Why won’t Anne question Michael?
- Are there two different sets of Immortals one good/one bad as Michael said "Are you one of them" as if he wasn't an immortal, which we know he is.

Summary
My head is spinning... I don't know what to make of this episode. Sure it was another great one, but the things that were revealed, specifically related to Julia and the immortals made me question everything I have theorized these past weeks. Everything seems to be connected someway, but with so many possibilities running through my mind as to what is the truth; I am getting a little tired without knowing fully what's going on. I need more answers...

As always, thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  3. Mme Durant was speaking about Michael when she said there was another who was against human extermination/thinning, hence the tree of life necklace she was wearing and also the symbol on the Abbey. She sent Julia to go and see him. What confuses me is the timeline of that sending. Obviously that was 30 years ago before the virus from the island was released but Julia only got to the island 30 years later, so where she did go? What happened in time in between?

Also, I think it maybe Michael that kick starts the baby's growth in Sarah. Whatever experiments he is going to do on her are going to cause her pregnancy to start running smoothly. I don't think It was horror when Peter told him about the baby but amazement in that someone had managed to achieve what he had been wanting for a long time - an immortal baby. Remember Amy said to Landry that he was going to keep sleeping when his daughters until he produced an immortal child. So he is very interested in Sarah's baby.

  4. Exactly my thoughts. This episode with Julia really confused me, she had to of been in the past, but where she was/what she was doing for 30 years is anyone's guess. When she went to the island in the present she was looking for Alan which is even stranger since he would've probably been dead by then.

Perhaps she was held captive for 30 years as maybe she was found out, and as Balleseros said: "if they found out she would be branded a traitor, and we all know what they do to traitors"

I saw the promo for next episode, and someone does something to Sarah so it's probably him.

That's a good point, I just replayed the clip, and you're right he seemed more amazed than anything else. He can keep trying for an immortal child, but it will never happen. It probably only happened to Sarah as she was pregnant at the time when she became immortal. Why is he so interested is what confuses me, what's the point of an immortal child/baby?

  5. I think Agnes, Anne, Amy, and the other ladies are not only Michael's daughters, but also his lovers and they are daughters of the previous lady.I predict it!

  6. 100% agree with all of this! :)

I initially thought that the 30 year jump could of been apart of Julia Hallucinating and/or she not knowing what date it was due to some freaky magical portal/Island bearing, but she mentions to Caleb the state of the outside world, so I know that she at least has to really be in the future. It will be interesting to learn what happened to her in between those 30 yrs and how and/if the show is going to allow her to connect with the group again in either time period?!

The baby thing seems obvious conclusion, but I'm wondering how he is going to do that?

  7. Me too! I was wrong about the sexual relations though...^^

  8. Nice! I knew Anne was Amy's mother, and that they were all his daughters, but I didn't predict Michael having sexual relations with all of them.

  9. He will probably just cut the baby out. In the promo he's seen grabbing a blade, with her strapped down to the table. The baby wouldn't have grown much since when she first became an immortal I don't think she was too far along with the pregnancy.

  10. Ya. The promo looks scary!! I wasn't sure if it was growing at all or if it was in state if stasis, but I just am thinking that if it's very premature due to it growing rather slowly or almost not at all, that he might need something to help it along?????

  11. I definitely think I need to re-watch the first 6 episodes of this season, as I was so confused when writing this weeks article. I even re-watched the episode, and still continue peace all the Julia scenes together, and everything about the virus/fungus.

If Peter was to have brought it to the island, it might explain his sudden promotion to CDC team leader, I mean that came out of know where and like we've said previously Ilaria must have had some involvement in that. Did we ever find out why Alan blew the building in Paris up? If we didn't perhaps he knew what they were planning (to unleash an outbreak) and he attempted to prevent it.

Another reason why I'd say he had some involvement would be why does he keep in constant contact with Balleseros for if he wasn't sent there to do something. Also the way he knows some parts of the island, makes me think he's been briefed on it. Another thing is he never wanted Alan's help with trying to find out what was happening on the island, why? Alan is the smartest scientist, and Peter knows that. Just a theory of course.

I don't recall ever being told why he was there, well actually he mentioned he wanted to get away from Alan and Julia, but obviously that wasn't the entire reason. He was probably there as a spy for Ilaria to keep an eye on what they were doing. I find it strange how at each one of these compounds (Abbey/Arctic base) there is a immortal leading them, and just one, no more.

As for Julia, the cure must have been stolen or Balleseros double crossed her, as giving it to him was always risky. You never know what to expect from him. I'm hoping we will find out what she spent the 30 years doing, as that's a long time.

  12. I didn't think it was growing previously, but after her being stabbed I believe that somehow kickstarted the growth again. Even so the baby would be born premature, so yes he probably would need something to help it along the way. He has been around for a while so I'm sure he has something up his sleeve.

What will also be interesting next week is seeing Michael's past on the island, something I've been wanting to see.

  14. "Did we ever find out why Alan blew the building in Paris up? If we didn't perhaps he knew what they were planning (to unleash an outbreak) and he attempted to prevent it."

Peter confronted him on it and he didn't deny it and I know there Ilaria documents on it, if that means anything? Not solid evidence, but it seems like he did it.

"Another reason why I'd say he had some involvement would be why does he keep in constant contact with Balleseros for if he wasn't sent there to do something..."

Ya that's true. But some of those documents seem to suggest that Ilaria is slightly in the dark about what's going on there. So I just figured he was there to investigate in general. But now that I'm thinking about this episode again (I should rewatch hem all too), maybe Sergio got wind that Julia was sent in that direction and Peter's there to find Julia? Or, like you also just brilliantly suggested, to Kill Michael!!!!

  15. Thanks! It doesn't mean much, I was just curious and couldn't remember. I was also asking because I want to know what his reasons could be for blowing it up, there has to be more to it than him wanting to kill some immortals or to find Julia.

Perhaps Ilaria are in the dark, but as we know there is a division within Ilaria, so maybe some members know what's going on/whilst others don't.

I hope Peter gets out the pit next episode so we might see some more of his "Mission". I'm just going to keep in mind what I said about him being involved with the outbreak, as you never really know what route this show will take. He definitely isn't a good guy in my eyes.

I know Michael will die at some point, but I'm starting to think it will be by Amy's hand, especially after reading the summary for 2.08.

I never pick up on these lines during the show, I should perhaps crank up my volume a bit more next time.

  16. "I never pick up on these lines during the show, I should perhaps crank up my volume a bit more next time :)

My dogs tend to bark at the deer in the back yard at night, so there are times where I completely miss dialogue!!! But I think this show has a tendency to just throw things out there sometimes at warp speed!!!! Like I really need to go back and listen better about the M. Domestica apple and 3-sided something or another uniqueness and then try and look up why that is important. LOL!

I'm still thinking Anne might be holding some cards we don't know she has. I don't completely buy her allegiance to Michael. She just seems written too passive for her own good. Plus speaking of episode 2.08, I'm curious as to why she's paired with a certain someone...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ha, my dog tends to run outside and bark at our neighbours cats at night. She has a very loud bark.

Even if I had really high volume I probably would still miss something important, I might as well find an online source for Helix that hopefully sheds some light on some of these things!

As am I, that was actually the first thing I noticed. Seems very odd, considering they have barely had a conversation together. Perhaps she gets the same treatment as him, thrown into the same...
