Chicago Fire – Headlong Toward Disaster – Review

Well, well, well…looks like Saint Casey had a weekend-long rendezvous with Bar Slut, Beth. This is a side of Casey we’ve never seen, and while I don’t particularly care for it, it’s nice to see him with a little life, a little story. He was getting boring.

With his father’s passing, Chief Boden will be out on furlough, and Chief Pritchett will be filling in. Before he even says a word, you know exactly what kind of man Chief Pritchett is – hint, not a good one. On their first call, not only does Pritchett show his lack of instinct on the job, but also how much of a jerk he can be. When Otis slips and falls on a bowling lane, he belittles him and mocks him, something Boden would never do.

After the first call, Beth shows up at the house to finalize divorce papers with her soon-to-be ex-husband. Drumroll please…it’s Pritchett! Of course it’s Pritchett. So not only is Casey sleeping with his new chief’s wife, but Pritchett doesn’t care for Casey. Seeing as how Casey is one of the best guys there is and Pritchett one of the worst, they naturally butt heads almost instantly. While I obviously don’t care for Pritchett, his character creates an excellent foil for Casey, which will hopefully continue to bring him out of his boring funk. Though after the second call of the night, I’m not so sure that Pritchett isn’t hell-bent on making sure Casey doesn’t come out of a burning building at some point.

We finally got some quality bro time between Casey and Severide! In a weird twist of events, it’s Severide telling Casey he’s being too reckless with Beth. While I don’t love that Casey and Dawson are broken up, I do love the scenes we get with Casey and Severide as a result. Keep them coming!

When the pipe breaks in Sylvie and Dawson’s apartment, Dawson calls Casey. Oh these two, when will they get it together? In a cheesy, cliché moment, the sink sprays all over Casey, and it’s clear the two still love each other.

With Newhouse still out on furlough, Squad is short a member and guess who Pritchett brings in? Tommy Welch! I know I shouldn’t be excited to see him (Firehouse 51 certainly isn’t), but I was disappointed when he left. He’s a controversial character, but I feel like there’s so much we don’t know about him yet, and I stand by what I said earlier this season – I bet we come out of this liking Tommy Welch.

Welch doesn’t receive the warmest of welcomes, but surprisingly, I think his way in will be Dawson. I don’t think his problem with Dawson was ever about Dawson; there’s clearly something in his past we don’t know yet. Anyway, Welch seems to be open to making amends and I hope they do. He could be an excellent addition to a pretty bland Squad (with the exception of Newhouse and Severide, of course).

Later, Beth stops by the firehouse on divorce business, but also to see Casey. She kisses him, even though Casey tells her their affair has to stop. I’m glad he ended it, but not before Welch saw the kiss. Well shoot.

When Pritchett has Casey and Severide cleaning windows for insubordination, Casey looks in and sees Dawson below. Welch approaches her, and at first, I think he’s worried for her; it’s almost a jealous look, like he’s afraid Welch will swoop in (what in interesting turn of events that would be…). Then, the look becomes fear, as it’s clear to Casey that Welch told Dawson about his little fling with Beth. Hell hath no fury…watch out, Casey.

Herrmann visits Boden to keep him updated on the goings on at 51. Chief is more bothered than I thought he would be about having Welch in the house, but the scenes do end up being comedic. Boden is a new dad, and Herrmann has like 10 kids (exaggeration, yes, but I’m close). It’s clear who the new dad is, and who has been doing it for years. When Baby Boden won’t stop crying, Herrmann puts him on the floor and gives him his key ring.

“Is that a pocket knife on that key ring?” asks Boden.
“He’ll never get that thing open. Those tiny fingers?” responds Herrmann. Love him.

The girl Sylvie saved, Celia, shows up at the firehouse to thank Sylvie. She seems eager and earnest and sweet, and call me a skeptic, but there’s something there we don’t know. I think she’s got ulterior motives. But of course, Sylvie and her good hearted sweetness can’t resist, and she gets involved. When Celia tells her she lost her guitar, Sylvie buys her another one.

Is it just me or is Capp getting a lot more attention as of late? For someone who has been virtually nonexistent for two and a half seasons, he’s seen quite a bit of screen time these past few weeks. What’s your angle here, writers? I mean, I know I complain about the men of Squad never being in the spotlight, but Capp is not the answer. Dream team: Severide leading Newhouse, Clark (still miss you, Jeff Clark!), and yes, Welch. Now there’s an intriguing Squad.

What did you think of the episode? How long will Pritchett stick around? How long will Welch be around?

  1. I agree about Welch, he is stirring the pot but there is going to be something that will redeem him. I have to say the MVP of that episode was Severide, he told Casey to quit being dumb and told the jerk of a chief where his loyalties are with Casey. I was surprised but I felt bad for Gabby, yes she ended it but not because she doesn't love Casey and that look on her face was pure hurt. Hopefully by the season finale these two can figure it out. And hey we only had to endure one creepy Cruz watching over Sylvie moment (I will enjoy the day when that is over!).

  2. I agree about Welch. I kind of liked him this episode. The chief was painful to watch. I didn't like Casey at all this episode. A fling is one thing, but he was acting like a frat boy. I felt sorry for Gabby. That's not a fun way of finding out. Hope these two figure it out soon!

  3. Your dream Squad team is interesting...I loved Clarke & he should be brought back in. I do not agree on the Capp part, the few lines he's given it shows that he's a funny guy & I'm 1 of those who wants Capp to have more screentime. Also, I thing Squad deserves more insight, too much attention is given to Truck... we know all their stories but hey what do we know about Squad? (apart from Severide & Newhouse).

Spoilers say that Severide is bringing in a new guy...which will eventually cause a problem with Mills. I thing that will be a good Squad storyline.

  4. When the reviewer mentioned the part about Capp getting more scenes, my first thought was "Who's Capp?" LOL (I haven't been watching this season very consistently), Anyway, after figuring it out, I'd have to agree with you YV. I like the little I've seen of him. He has an edge that I like, so more screentime for him is a good thing.,

  5. Nice review! I haven't been too crazy about this season, but I thought this was a great episode and a step in the right direction. I think that the series has been in a bit of a rut and having some new characters around to stir things up can only be a good thing. The new chief is definitely cringe-worthy, but I guess it gives us someone to hate and I loved the way Casey and Severide both stood up to him. I have to say, I almost felt sorry for him when he started talking about his wife. And after witnessing her in action with Casey, I cold easily see what he was talking about. I got the feeling that she actually wanted him to catch her with Casey.

Like you, I'm also looking forward to the scenes with Welch. I couldn't stand the way he treated Dawson in prior seasons, but I definitely think your're right about there being something interesting in his past. It does look like he's trying to make amends. However, it was kind of interesting that he told Dawson to warn Casey about fooling around with the chief's ex-wife instead of telling Casey himself. I couldn't tell if he was trying to stir up trouble, or if he just figured that Casey would be more receptive to listening to Dawson. I can see some potentially interesting stories on the horizon, so hopefully the writers won't have to rely on Dawson and Casey for the drama and maybe they can have those two patch things up. I miss seeing them together as a couple.

  6. Thanks for a great review. I love reading these. Your dream team is my dream team. If only.
-I loved Welch in this episode and I hope they keep him. We'll either love to hate him, understand him or root for him when we find out the root cause of his douchness. I think he may have lost a woman that he loved in his firehouse. Either way, he brings an energy to this sorely lacking team.
-When Casey finally decides to get a life, he gets a psycho stalking troublemaker. Nice, only it's not. One look at her creepy face at the bar was enough to know she is trouble.
-I have really started to like Sylvie but I really do not like her relationship with Cruz. For me, he and Otis are the weakest, most boring of the bunch. I can do without either on my screen. They make Cruz a little too desperate for love. Otis is too childish. I also think Sylvie has picked up a mini-stalker. She seemed to he a sweet kid but that dazed, hero worship in her eyes while looking at Sylvie was either played wrong by the actress or a set up for future trouble.
-When Donna hugged Boden towards the end, that was a sweet scene and one he needed.

  7. It was painful to watch the Chief. I didn't necessarily like Casey this episode, but he was at least interesting. I do think he and Dawson will work it out eventually!

  8. Squad definitely needs more attention. And it's not that I don't like Capp, I just find Newhouse, Clark (seriously, I LOVE Clark), and Welch to be way more intriguing characters. I'd like to see them as a team.

  9. Thank you!

Compared to last season, I think I like this one more, which surprises me. I completely agree about the Chief, it does bring that tension and it unites Casey and Severide, which is is always a good thing.

I got that feeling too! Beth just seems like trouble.

Here's my opinion, and it's just speculation (but I think I'm right): Welch was a lieutenant at his previous house, and I bet he was in a relationship with a female firefighter who either was refused a position at his house because of his position, or possibly died on the job. Because of that, He has a problem with inter-house romances and probably told Dawson because he knows it will drive a wedge between her and Casey.

  10. Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy it! I do enjoy writing them.

And right?! I love the dream team. I love Clark, I think that actor is on another show right now and it's horrible, but I not-so-secretly hope it doesn't work out so he can come back to Fire.

I love Welch too! I'd love to see him there in a full-time capacity.

I completely agree about Otis and Cruz. And I hate Cruz's relationship with Sylvie. HATE it.

  11. I agree....Otis and Cruz aren't the most exciting characters. Cruz and Sylvie are an odd couple, . They sort of played around with the idea of shipping Sylvie with Severide, Jay (on Chicago PD) and Mills and I wasn't really feeling much of the chemistry with them, except maybe Mills.

  12. Well.. I wanted to see Welch again too, but not like this. I wanted to see him in deep trouble in his old fire house. And I think that he talked to Dawson with the purpose of making her sad telling her about the kiss, it was never about trying to get things right. Plus, I have a suspicion that Beth knew Casey was going to work with her ex-husband. I didn't like Sylvie's attitude. It's ok to help the girl, but buy her something right after a few words...

  13. I think Sylvie could have great chemistry with Severide, and their different personalities would really compliment one another. Mills would be a great choice, but I'm really pulling for Sylvie and Severide.

  14. "When we get Casey and Severide teaming up, that's what I need."

Same here. It took three years to finally get around to a friendship between these two after endless teasing, so I could see them waiting for a while for them to team up regularly.

  15. I've been pulling for Sylvie and Severide since the episode they teamed up! I really hope they go back to that.

  16. I think a great Squad (and yes, I'm sticking with my dream team) could be infinitely more interesting than Truck and Ambo.
