Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of the new season of “American Idol” led Fox to victory, with an average 7.3 rating/11 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking at an 8.1/12 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, “Idol” dominated from 8:30-10 p.m. (finishing second in the 8 p.m. half-hour behind the 11.1/17 for “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS), but it slipped by 12 percent from the 8.3/13 for the year-ago Thursday night opener (on 1/16/14).

Benefitting out of CBS’ aforementioned “The Big Bang Theory,” of course, was “Mom” at a 7.5/11 (#2) at 8:30 p.m., which held 68 percent of the “Big Bang” lead-in. Next was soon-to-conclude “Two and a Half Men” at a 6.2/10 at 9:30 p.m. (#2), followed by freshman “The McCarthys” at a 4.9/ 8 (#2) at 9:30 p.m. As a reminder, the upcoming reboot of “The Odd Couple” moves into the Thursday 8:30 p.m. half-hour on Feb. 26, with current occupant “Mom” shifting to 9:30 p.m. out of repeat telecasts of “The Big Bang Theory.”

The Eye net capped off the evening with older-skewing mystery drama “Elementary” at a first-place 5.4/ 9 from 9-10 p.m.

Over at ABC, two more hours of cooking competition “The Taste” was half-baked, at a 2.4/ 4 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. And that led into a repeat of “How To Get Away With Murder” at a third-place 1.8/ 3 at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, NBC could not compete with its line-up of “The Biggest Loser” (#3: 3.2/ 5), canceled sitcoms “Bad Judge” (#4: 2.1/ 4) and “A To Z” (#4: 1.6/ 2), which earned their walking papers, and “Parenthood” (#2: 3.4/ 6), which built by a hefty 112 percent in the overnights out of “A To Z.” Only three original episodes of “Parenthood” remain.

The CW populated the evening with 2012 movie “House at the End of the Street,” which scored a 1.1/ 2 from 8-10 p.m.

  2. Great for TBBT and Mom. AI didn't effect it much, at least per the HH.

    ReplyDelete
  3. AI doesnt have the effect it use to at all.

    ReplyDelete
  4. ABC is ridiculous for not showing TGIT when TV viewership is so high right now.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Revenge and OUAT9 January 2015 at 15:00

The viewership for abc has not been that high this january

    ReplyDelete
  6. TGIT really doesn't need it, TBH.

    ReplyDelete
  7. ABC needs a better filler
Can't see the taste getting renewed

    ReplyDelete
  8. It did get renewed twice, so who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It can't even pull a 1, is it really worth renewing ?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Just imagine the levels it would reach with that viewership levels.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's a cheap schedule filler.

  12. Jean Paul (Alexi)9 January 2015 at 15:15

A repeat of the movie 'House at the End of the Street' that gets that overnight is a 'loser'? really?

PS: I hope Jennifer Lawrence and Bates Motel's Max Thieriot will have a chance to act together again. I liked their scenes :)

  13. Top 25 Markets 19-49 Demo Ratings have been posted

    ReplyDelete
  14. Let's see if TBBT was capable of cracking a 3.

    ReplyDelete
  15. But the rest of the CBS line-up looks low. I expected higher. lol

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hmm, not seeing them despite refreshing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmm, showing fine for me. Try CTRL-F5

    ReplyDelete
  18. Doesn't really deserve it for this episode; it was really week.

    ReplyDelete
  19. no its not it was funny

    ReplyDelete
  20. I was bored through most of it. Even Mom wasn't it's usual self this week.

    ReplyDelete
  21. your totally wrong lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. Now those are TBBT ratings.
And woah Parenthood! Being on the last episodes and no Murder on the air must have helped it rise

    ReplyDelete
  23. Revenge and OUAT9 January 2015 at 15:32

    In your opinion

    ReplyDelete
  24. Parenthood and Mom look very high from the top25 markets. We shall see how it shapes up in finals but those look me to like the big winners from last night. TBBT should be around the 4.5 mark which is still amazing but quite down from where it was. I would love for Mom to break a 3.0 but I expect 2.8-2.9. But still, new series highs hopefully. TBL also seems to have rebounded!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with this. They need to develop a new reality franchise that is able to hover around 1.2/1.3 on this night. These are really low levels and they are still affecting a high number of weeks, which will hurt their seasonal average. I understand not being profitable to invest in scripted shows for this hiatus (maybe just one hour though) but they should try new unscripted stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's much better to have the shows air in a split season format and there would have been no better way to achieve a split season than the one they currently are doing. Besides, I am kind of doubtful TGIT oscilates that much with viewership as casual programming (reality, new shows, comedies, procedurals) do.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Last year TBBT did a 5.7
It's still huge, but the show is already showing its age. As long as it hangs up on the 4s there shouldn't be a problem, but it's gotta be disappointing. Just imagine how Mom would have done if it had TBBT last season as a lead in

    ReplyDelete
  28. So the PCA's actually helped Mom a little..

    ReplyDelete
  29. The jerk around really threw it off it's game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well Empire didn't need it lol. What show is airing on Thurs at 9??

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't follow, what did you mean by that?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will they do that again next season?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Backstorm - the show airing at 9 - won't be Empire.
besides, American Idol still provided Empire with an enormous sample (3.2)

    ReplyDelete
  34. The moving around the schedule due to NFL really hurt TBBT's numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The moving to monday and back to Thursday

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ah!
Maybe, but it started great on Monday and then it deflated. Its Monday run was pretty weak, so I think that also hurt the show, but the changes on schedules must have also had an effect

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think it was due to the change. and maybe The Voice hurt it a little?

    ReplyDelete
  38. The drop for CBS is quite alarming, but I think CBS will renew it past season 10 if all the stars are willing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yep, until it starts to pull 2.5 men numbers the show is more than safe

    ReplyDelete
  40. It did in that in the prelims when it was pre-empted.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is still comfortably the highest-rated show on all of broadcast so nothing to worry about...
CBS will just have to ponder if TNF is worth all that much if it damages TBBT.

    ReplyDelete
  42. CBS can't thank Chuck Lorre enough. The should make a statue of him in their headquarters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. They might but I think S10 might be the end

    ReplyDelete
  44. He is to CBS what Shonda is for ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And what Dick Wolf is for NBC
And what Gordon Ramsey is for FOX

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yes, but unlike Shonda, , none of the shows his shows are produced by CBS so they get no syndication benefits.
WB probably has a statue of him, too

    ReplyDelete
  47. Backstrom is going to be Rake 2.0 anyways. I hope Idol can be more stable than last season..

    ReplyDelete
  48. CBS is trying to full season football package

    ReplyDelete
  49. Did people leave Elementary midway to watch Parenthood, lol?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Arguably, Lorre and Shonda are more successful to their respective networks than the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  51. yes a .4 is a loser

    ReplyDelete
  52. It depends on what fails9 January 2015 at 16:29

But Dick Wolf's shows have aired 51 seasons since 1990 for NBC.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Maybe bring back Extreme Home Makeover? It might benefit from a similar "absence makes the heart grow fonder" effect that seems to be helping Celebrity Apprentice this season.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm speaking on ratings-terms.

    ReplyDelete
  55. TBBT-Still amazing even its down from 5.7 from last year i think?
    Mom-Hitting new series high,very good.
Two and a Half Man-Decent for a show in its 12th season,i think CBS shouldnt ended it.
American idol didnt drop much from Wednesday, still good.
Elementary and Parenthood are helped by absence of HTGAWM.

    ReplyDelete
  56. And Dick Wolf has made NBC millions upon millions of $$$ in syndication revenue, something Lorre has not done for CBS.

    ReplyDelete
  57. And DickWolf has made NBC millions upon millions of $$$ in syndication revenue. Something Chuck Lorre has not done for CBS.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wolf has also given NBC millions upon millions of $$$ in syndication revenue, which is something Lorre, has not done for CBS.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I still need to catch up on MOM.

I hope it's ratings hold up once it's after the TBBT repeat this Spring.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Jean Paul (Alexi)9 January 2015 at 16:41

I read in another site that it was a repeat. It isn't a loser to me.

    ReplyDelete
  61. gah Elementary please syndication get it renewed.....

    ReplyDelete
  62. McCarthys tied a series high. Bit of a hollow victory for it + everything else on CBS given the lack of competition, but darn it, I'll take it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Elementary already has a syndication deal with WGN.

    ReplyDelete
  64. so is s4 sure?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well, you need at least 88 episodes to go into sybdication so i assume its a safe bet.

    ReplyDelete
  66. it's a 3 year old movie

    ReplyDelete
  67. Jean Paul (Alexi)9 January 2015 at 18:44

So? I noticed that even for all new (on broadcast) movies is rare to do very well. Imagine a repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Mom!!!! YAY!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Elementary needs better time for airing. Such a good show doesn't fit with comedy day. It has more potential for greater ratings if it would be on with other dramas.
