Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

-Winners:
Football overrun (Fox), “Madam Secretary” (CBS), “The Simpsons” (Fox), “The Good Wife” (CBS), “Celebrity Apprentice” (NBC)

-Respectable Sampling:
“Galavant” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Resurrection” (ABC), “Revenge” (ABC)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
Although some of the broadcast networks are no longer using the word midseason, the launch of goofy musical comedy “Galavant” on ABC last night did signal the beginning of the next round of new primetime series. And “Galavant” did, as expected, get sampled with a 4.4 rating/7 share in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, “Galavant” finished fourth in the time period, which is nothing to boast about. And it dipped by 15 percent in the second half-hour (4.8/ 7 to 4.1/ 6), which could signal considerable erosion in week two. But “Galavant” did build from the 7:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (3.6/ 5) by 22 percent. And it opened 16 percent higher than the most recent telecast of regularly scheduled time period occupant “Once Upon a Time” (3.8/ 6 on 12/14/14), which it is filling in for. Let’s wait and see the what initial demo ratings look like.

Also on ABC: The prognosis for life past the 14 ordered episodes this season continues to get weaker for sophomore drama “Resurrection,” which slipped to a 2.9/ 4 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 36 percent below year-ago occupant “Revenge” (4.5/ 7 on 1/05/14). And minus the lead-in support, “Revenge” at 10 p.m. could only muster a 3.1/ 5, which was still 35 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Betrayal” (2.3/ 4 on 1/05/14).

Earlier in the evening on ABC was aforementioned “America’s Funniest Home Videos” at a 3.3/ 5 (#4) from 7-8 p.m.

In season-premiere news, NBC guilty pleasure “Celebrity Apprentice” returned after an almost two year absence with a 4.7/ 7 from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, this was a 24 percent overnight rating improvement over its most recent season-opener (3.8/ 6 on 3/03/13), and this should be enough to win the two-hour block in adults 18-49. The episode, no doubt, was taped long before Bill Cosby’s sexual assault allegations began piling up.

From 7-9 p.m. on NBC was a two-hour edition of “Dateline” at a 4.0/ 6 from 7-9 p.m., peaking in the 8:30 p.m. half-hour at a 5.5/ 8.

Tops for the night was Fox, which won this first Sunday in January with ease thanks to an estimated one-hour NFL Football primetime overrun (NFC Wildcard Game: Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys) at a mammoth 27.8/43 in the household overnights from 7-8 p.m. Individual program results for Fox last night are approximate, due to unconfirmed start times. As it stands, “The Simpsons” is showing up at an above average 6.6/10 in the 8 p.m. half-hour, but part of that overnight rating could include post-game “The OT.” Next was sophomore “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at a 4.0/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. (#4), followed by “Family Guy” (#3: 3.7/ 5) and “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 2.6/ 4) from 9-10 p.m.

Over at CBS, granddaddy “60 Minutes” took a hit opposite the football overrun on Fox with a second-place 5.8/ 9 from 7-8 p.m. But the return of scripted dramas “Madam Secretary” (#1: 7.7/11) and “The Good Wife” (#1: 7.0/10) remained perfectly compatible from 8-10 p.m. (and are both worth touting despite the older audience skew). And tired ‘CSI” closed the night for the Eye net with a 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m. (#1), which was 17 percent below year-ago occupant “The Mentalist” (6.4/10 on 1/05/14).

  1. Oh no revenge 😔 I have a very bad feeling about its ratings

  2. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:31

Oh god revenge. But when revenge hit a 1.5 they also had said that it was a loser so this means nothing!

  3. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:31

    How was it?

  4. It was a good episode

  5. That's OK for Galavant, I guess. We'll see when the demo comes out.
Resurrection has 13 episodes ordered for this season Marc, not 14.

  6. Surprised by Galavant, those look like good numbers! Let's hope it does over 2s on the demo and keeps it over the season!
Revenge's numbers look ugly, but I'll wait for the demo.

  7. Last time it's hh was a 3.1 it ended up translating to a 1.0

  8. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:33

Okay but i think These first ratings mean nothing

  9. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:35

Do These early numbers really mean anything*

  10. I heard that The Simpsons started in its usual timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Galavant looks high but I imagine that's the type of show that was bound to attract a lot of initial interest and that will then have a lot of tune-out - how much it retains is likely the audience. We still need to see the young demos though, of course.

Elsewhere, poor Revenge looks horrible, sadly. I can't really say much about the CBS dramas or the FOX comedies without the demos. The Apprentice looks solid and might actually kill the Biggest Loser if it does well on Mondays. It could pull a TBL-2012/2013 when it rebounded big time when airing in the winter as voice-fill in.

  12. That's pretty decent for CA
    FOX is boosted by football
    CBS remains old skewing
    Resurrection and Revenge are done

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not really but it's not a good sign for revenge- it's likely finished

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm not even going to look at revenges ratings

    ReplyDelete
  15. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:37

I guess this is really the end fro revenge ;(

    ReplyDelete
  16. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:38

Yeah :/ bur AFHV scored a 3.3 ans red q 3.1 and usually AFHV ends up with a 1.4-1.5 so how could revenge be much lower?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I know it's sad. Let's just hope that the writers will manage to at least give it closure

  18. Alright for Galavant. We're obviously going to have to wait to see what the ratings look like. Poor Revenge, with dreadful Resurrection as a lead in it can't be able to breathe. Resurrection is suffocating Revenge to death. FOX and CBS inflated. Celebrity Apprentice actually looks quite good.

  19. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:39

Yes and i hope the next show fails in that Slot so we have our revenge because revenge was really not treated correctly by ABC

    ReplyDelete
  20. It depends on the timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:40

But 10 pm is a way harder Slot than 7pm

    ReplyDelete
  22. You can't possibly get more childish.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It depends on what fails5 January 2015 at 14:40

Ugly for Revenge, fraudulent for FOX and OK for Galavant.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You do realize the show went bad and never got back to S1 quality- stop blaming abc

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh cmon she was just saying her opinion

    ReplyDelete
  26. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:41

I am just saying that people always say revenge does terribly which it indeed does but if for example OUAT was put there it would fail as well

    ReplyDelete
  27. The correlation with the actual demos is awful so we still have shows that go down in HH and up in demo in vice-versa but it's rare to have big deviations. If a show does bad (for its standards) in HH, it shouldn't be expected a good scenario in 18-49. This doesn't apply to CW shows though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wishing that the next shows falls just to prove some sort of point is quite childish.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It depends on what fails5 January 2015 at 14:41

It isn't, 7 PM is a low-viewed timeslot, that's why ABC and CBS don't change it and FOX burns episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It wouldn't fail nearly as badly as Revenge. besides, OUAT is a 8 p.m. family show. No one would put it here.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:42

    Yeah true

    ReplyDelete
  32. It wouldn't sink to Revenge's numbers. It would still be doing over 1.5 at least.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It really depends on the show and lead in. So far every show abc has put in that timeslot has been getting ratings between 0.7-1.0.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I still never understand how the shows on CBS can't crack a 2 are still labeled as winners

    ReplyDelete
  35. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:45

    I was wondering as well

    ReplyDelete
  36. Marc berman is just biased

    ReplyDelete
  37. I adore Revenge, it's one of my favorite shows but ABC didn't treat it as horribly as you are implying. They did a horrible thing two years ago when they aired it and OUAT up against the awards season, yes, but they redemeed themselves from it. Even in Season 3 when Revenge had done poor enough to warrant a move to 10pm they held it at 9pm to give it another try and only moved it when they had a viable hit for 9pm in Resurrection. Yes, it found itself in a bad situation now that Resurrection has collapsed, but there is little ABC could have done to change it once it happened.

  39. That's why I think they should move one of their veteran shows there, like Castle or Nashville. Nashville seems more compatible, though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Revenge and OUAT5 January 2015 at 14:49

Yeah you are right i guess ;)

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is not what Mark does (he bases classifications on total viewers and even prestige and such) but IMO, it doesn't matter at all if a show hits a 2.0 or not for me to label it as a winner. Any show on FOX for instance will be renewed with >1.5 and likely even below if it's a comedy for instance. If you're an NBC comedy and have >1.3 or so, you're a winner. If you're a CW show with higher than 0.7 or so, you're a winner.

CBS's drama average in recent weeks is 1.62. If those shows do close to that, they can be classified as winners (not saying it will happen, just showing my logic)
