Ratings Breakdown:
Dominant Fox got some particularly positive news last night care of episode two of drama “Empire,” which led the 9 p.m. hour with a 7.3 rating/11 share and built from its debut one week earlier (6.8/11 on Jan. 7) by seven percent. Most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in the overnights in week two, and that 6.8 overnight rating for the series-debut of “Empire” translated into 9.90 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/11 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. Comparably, overnight retention for “Empire” out of the 8:30 p.m. ET portion of “American Idol” (8.1/13) was solid at 90 percent.

“American Idol,” meanwhile, scored a 7.8/13 from 8-9 p.m. While this was 17 percent below the 9.4/15 for a two-hour edition on the year-ago evening, it was still the top-rated program in the hour.

In the battle of the older skewing 8-9 p.m. dramas, soon-to-conclude “The Mentalist” on CBS scored a 5.7/ 9 (#2), which was 39 percent above competing “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC (4.1/ 7). But this performance for “The Mysteries of Laura” was still 28 percent above the 3.2/ 5 for year-ago drama occupant “Revolution.”

“The Mentalist” led into a second-place 6.3/10 for “Criminal Minds” in the 9 p.m. hour, which according to CBS could be the parent to another spin-off series next season (failed “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” aired briefly in 2011). And it led into on-the-fence “Stalker” at a first-place 4.9/ 8 at 10 p.m., which was 28 percent below the 6.8/12 for year-ago occupant “CSI.” Of CBS’ four new dramas this fall (“NCIS: New Orleans,” “Scorpion” and “Madam Secretary”), only “Stalker” has yet to be picked-up for 2015-16.

Leading out of “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC was veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at a fourth-place 4.3/ 7 from 9-10 p.m., which was 19 percent below the 5.3/ 8 one week earlier. And sophomore “Chicago PD” capped off the night for the Peacock net with a second-place 4.5/ 8, which should be neck-and-neck with competing “Stalker” on CBS for first among adults 18-49.

The top draw on ABC was “Modern Family,” of course, which scored a second-place 6.5/10 in the overnights in the 9 p.m. half-hour. But with increased competition from “Empire” on Fox, lead-out “Black-ish” (#4: 4.2/ 7) could only hold 65 percent of the lead-in. Earlier in the evening on ABC were sitcoms “The Middle” (#3: 5.2/ 8) and “The Goldbergs”: (#3: 4.6/ 7), which slipped by a minor seven and eight percent, respectively, from one week earlier. And a repeat of “Forever” closed the evening for ABC with a modest 2.2/ 4 at 10 p.m.

The CW populated the evening with encore telecasts of “Arrow” (#5: 0.9/ 1) and “The Flash” (#5: 0.8/ 1).
