Minus “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC in the competitive mix, NBC topped the Monday overnights with a five percent advantage in households over second-place CBS. But all is not rosy in the Monday halls at NBC with episode four of drama “State of Affairs” third in the 10 p.m. hour with a 4.0 rating/6 share. Comparably, this was down by 17 percent from the 4.8/ 8 one week earlier. Overnight retention for “State of Affairs” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (7.2/11) was just 56 percent. And this pales in comparison to former time period occupant “The Blacklist.”
“The Voice,” overall, averaged a 7.3/11 from 8-10 p.m., fluctuating by only one-tenth of an overnight rating point in the four half-hours. But, year-to-year, “The Voice” did dip by 13 percent from the 8.4/13 on the year-ago evening.
In season-premiere news, CBS sitcom “Mike & Molly” opened with a second-place 5.4/ 8 at 8:30 p.m., which was perfectly compatible out of the almost identical 5.5/ 8 for lead-in “2 Broke Girls.” And it led into a 6.8/10 for “Scorpion” from 9-10 p.m., which built by 26 percent and remains a bona fide hit new drama. Capping off the night for the Eye net was “NCIS: Los Angeles” at a first-place 5.6/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was 65 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Hostages” (3.4/ 6 on 12/09/13).
Also opening for the season was ABC reality competition “The Great Christmas Light Fight” at a respectable 4.5/ 7 from 8-10 p.m., which was 25 percent above the 3.6/ 6 for the year-ago telecast (from 9-11 p.m.). And that translated into 5.50 million viewers and a 1.4 rating/4 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data. Next on ABC was “Castle” at a second-place 4.9/ 8 at 10 p.m., which was 14 percent above the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Great Christmas Night Fight” (4.3/ 6). But “Castle” minus the lead-in support from “Dancing With the Stars” is not as strong a show.
Elsewhere, The CW was at typical overnight levels for scripted hours “The Originals” (#5: 1.2/ 2) and “Jane the Virgin” (#5: 0.9/ 1), which is clearly worthy of a larger audience from a creative standpoint. And Fox aired encore telecasts of “Gotham” (#4: 1.6/ 2) and sophomore “Sleepy Hollow” (#4: 1.1/ 2).

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Nobody seems to have had a particularly inspiring night based on those top 25, save for The Great Christmas Light Fight. State of Affairs is looking horrible and I was hoping TO could have hit a 0.7 for the midseason finale but this looks like another 0.6, hope to be wrong. CBS did okayish it appears, but I thought Mike and Molly could have helped a bit more. 2 Broke Girls still appears depressed and Scorpion is up but apparently not higher than 2.0/2.1. Hopefully the Voice-less months help it to gain momentum and lock in new viewers.

They have a problem, however, since Melissa McCarthy's movie career might not help the show.

ReplyDeleteIt's not that hard. Mike and Molly is practically premiering in January, it will only air 2 episodes in December, so that's 20 in the new year alone. If they want to do it they can squeeze in an utility schedule there January-May. But I imagine it would have to be a lot of Mike and Molly, Undercover Boss and other utility players like that, I doubt we would see big bang theory in those conditions.
ReplyDeleteI am almost certain that ABC will end the season with a two hour Grey's Anatomy finale leading into the finale of American Crime, otherwise the episode orders of Scandal and GA will be very messed up during the spring and they will be airing original greys into scandal repeats in march or april.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they should get the 6 games back honestly. Either go for the whole thing or let it go. It appears to have done little as a promotional platform (unless we attribute Scorpion's success to it, which is a stretch) and I believe the Thursday lineup is bleeding more than it would have done if it premiered in September. Furthermore, they won't keep The Big Bang Theory off the schedule until November so they will have to keep moving it back Monday-Thursday during the season, which is not good for the show (it was already hurt this year), especially as it gets past its peak. I suppose you could argue they could just leave it on Mondays but then I think they will have a very big problem on Thursdays. Yes, they will still have that problem if they get the whole package, but at least it's only from January onwards and they can try to program specifically around that.

ReplyDeleteThey'll inflate their seasonal average but at expense of their scripted options, it's only masking their decline and weakening them as a network, just like NBC ans their awful depth.
But if they do, they better leave TBBT on mondays and revamp thursdays in january, jerking around with your top show isn't good, NBC has waned The Voice because they have no options, will CBS do the same to TBBT when they could avoid it?

ReplyDeleteIt's especially hard to come up with a decent schedule for them if they get TNF imo. The best I could do would be a sort of give up Thursdays of second tier comedies (2 Broke Girls, Mike and Molly), dramas (Person of Interest) and reality (Undercover Boss) because I don't see them wanting to hold the first tier shows until that late in the season. But if you put together a night of second tier shows you get a night of second tier ratings as well.

It may seem strange to move broke girls to thursday but with CBS and ABC going with their strongest drama options in the hour, CBS would be wise to counter program with comedy again, I don't see there being an audience for dramas for all three networks (plus FOX, I suppose, I even forget they exist). If the Odd Couple proves renew worthy then I would understand sticking with 3 hours, otherwise I would rather see this.

I went back and forth during pre-season mostly because I really didn't want another procedural in my rotation of shows but then you and all the positive reviews made me decide to try it and I loved the pilot. Subsequent episodes, while often very good, often also feel like too procedural to me and I find myself struggling to get invested in some of the cases. But sometimes they have some really enjoyable ones so for now I am sticking with the show, I think it's really good at what it does, it's just that I am not entirely sure I want to watch what it does right now lol (if this makes sense?) . And I haven't watched last night's yet but looks great.
ReplyDeleteI like this schedule, for me, it's hard to see CBS going for 3 hours without The Odd Couple, their only comedy anchor is TBBT, to air six comedies they need at least two to be anchors, because TBBT's audience isn't sticking for 2 full hours (in fact, 40% of it is gone at 8:30).

I can see it being moved since CBS doesn't own it, because of this situation, I'm not sure if there is any weekday drama above it besides Elementary (and this one they can move to sundays at 10). If they decide to premiere two new dramas and renew Cyber, would POI take the spot from H-50 on fridays?

Those Castle and ABC numbers include Football from the Atlanta and the Green Bay / Milwaukee area,, so when the Finals ABC and Castle will look worst
ReplyDeleteA month ago I thought POI was legitimately in risk of being cancelled when it hit that horrible 1.3 But half a point (or close to it) makes a lot of difference and a 1.7 could be enough to keep it on a weekday IMO. While I agree that it would be the next show in line to move to a weekend night if CBS needed the room on a weekday, I am not sure they do need it. In my proposed schedule above, they are already premiering 2.5/3.5 hours of new programming (depending on Cyber). That's pretty much in line with what they tend to do, excluding this year in which they have programmed an hefty 4.5 hours of new programming. Maybe 2.5 is indeed too little, but 3.5 is okay I think, unless they have a sensational development season (and odds say they are unlikely to have two great development seasons back to back after striking out so many years).
ReplyDeleteIf Cyber is renewed, maybe I agree that 2.5 is too little. But then again, if they have another year in which Hostages/Intelligence is the best they could do, those 2.5 would still probably be enough. If not, then H50 and POI will fight for the remaining slot. Casual wisdom will favor POI but if the syndication economics are still favorable for H50 I am not sure it's an easy decision. There are also other options such as doing POI/H50/BB, cancelling Madam Secretary or even moving Elementary to Saturdays but in general I tend to think those are more long shots. But I would say let's cross the Cyber bridge when we get there. Right now, precedent about midseason dramas on CBS is not on its side.
Then yikes at Castle, ATL is a top 10 market, doesn't get strong ratings for football but its size is enough to create 2+ tenth adjustments.
ReplyDeleteGreen Bay isn't a top 25 market but its one of the top football markets, I can see castle falling to 1.5 or even 1.4, let's wait.
Normally if a show is pre-empted for another show/broadcast it normally means that the numbers you see above for those shows will be higher than they actually are, and are likely to be adjusted downwards in the Final Adjusted Ratings that are posted later in the day.

ReplyDelete- CBS had a decent night but I thought Mike and Molly would be higher. But 2 Broke Girls back to a 2.0 are great news for the network. Despite all the bashing that show gets for all the decline it suffered, it's still one of the strongest comedies around IMO. Scorpion is back up above a 2.0 which is good but could be even better and LA is hanging in there .I expect to see the entire lineup increase by multiple ticks in the winter with the voice gone.
ReplyDelete- The Voice is really bleeding. State of Affairs didn't do as bad as the preliminary results suggested but it's not a success either and should be low 1s with the apprentice.
- ABC looks very good but there were preemptions, so not commenting on that just yet.
- Pitty that The Originals couldn't reach that 0.7 for the midseason finale, but these are still respectable numbers for the cw.

ReplyDeleteTwo weeks ago, The Voice's monday edition was the only non-sports show to not fall below a 3.0.
ReplyDeleteNow not only it dropped from those numbers but it also didn't come back. Its collapse is slower than Idol's, but I can see it losing 20% next spring compared to 2014.
TO to adjust up and JTV down?

SOA is still doing ok by NBC standards so its still lokking safe to me.
ReplyDeleteDownward adjustment coming for SOA, 1.7/1.4 is a terrible half-hour breakdown, Blacklist used to lose 3 tenths too but always had higher ratings.

To be fair, I don't recall the voice ever offering a lead-in of almost 2.5 to the blacklist. I think it was always above a 3.0 or close to it. It doesn't excuse the entirely of SoFa's ratings, but I think it should prevent comparisons with the blacklist.

ReplyDeleteLast night excluded, the voice is down 15% (both on Monday and Tuesday) compared to where it was last fall. It's not a good trend but it's hardly the disaster people are making it out to be. The average decline this season is 10%, so 5% more than that is bad but still acceptable imo.

ReplyDeleteMy bet is that NBC is going to renew 6 dramas for next fall, just like in the last two years.
ReplyDeleteThree are locks (CF, PD and Blacklsit), Grimm is very likely and SVU only gets canceled because of its costs (I bet it won't get cut now). The final drama is the best newbie, right now is Laura given that SOA has The Voice and midseason competition is going to be huge (Aquarius, Odyssey, Allegiance).
They might renew seven if they completely pull the plug on comedies, but what I see is NBC keeping just one comedy hour for next season and replacing the other with some unscripted offer, they are a sports/unscripted-fueled network already.
Half hours have nothing to do with adjustments.

ReplyDelete1. I don't necessarily think TBL has a place on the fall schedule again after pulling low 1s this year. In addition, with the blacklist on the 9pm slot, I imagine NBC will want something a bit higher helping it out. But we'll know more about that one soon, when they announce what is airing there this spring. But don't count out on them cutting out a reality hour.
2. I also doubt they go with 4 comedies for the fall again. We are probably looking at 2 comedies (1 hour) only. So that's another hour to cut.
So while they could still renew the 6 dramas you are suggesting and fill the remaining hours with Dateline+The Voice(x3)+Comedy, that would force them to premiere 3 new dramas in the fall, plus the comedy hour which would probably be all new. That's 4 hours of new programming. It's feasible but the last time NBC did it was when they had the olympics in the summer to help them out (this year SOFA premiered so late that I don't really consider it part of the initial fall schedule). I think it's more likely that they premiere only 3 new hours (2 new dramas + 2 new comedies). That would force them to renew two dramas from this season or to put a 4th hour of reality on the schedule, which I still think is looking difficult. Bottom line? Things are looking up for Laura!
PS: Grimm is as certain as it gets IMO.
Scorpion went down from 2.2 to 2.0 that isn't good, right?:( it had a good episode imo, one of my favs. *sigh*

ReplyDeleteMaybe, but it's worth remembering that before the millers, all the rookie comedies placed after the big bang theory died in their freshman seasons, which is why CBS eventually placed 10 year old two and a half men there. How to Be a Gentleman, Shit My Dad Says, Rob all got canned. And while the millers did get renewed, I argued last year that it shouldn't have gotten renewed and the fact that it was pulled after 5 airings this season certainly makes it look like I was right (which would indicate CBS had learned its lesson).
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how The Odd Couple will do and I think it has a shot, but the idea that just because it's airing after a big comedy renewal chances improve is iffy at best. Just ask all the MF lead-outs, they too can attest to that. Or the How I Met Your Mother lead-outs that are not called 2 Broke Girls!

ReplyDeleteI agree, it's not certain to be renewed. I was wrong about The Voice fueled comedies as well, so I'm not gonna assume anymore that a big lead-in automatically leads to success.
