———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“The Voice” (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
“CMA Country Christmas” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Greatest Holiday Commercials Countdown” (CW)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
Note: The football match-up on ESPN last night was the Miami Dolphins versus the New York Jets.

Minus ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in the competitive mix (which concluded its fall edition last week), NBC rose to the top of the Monday overnight charts. Two hours of singing competition “The Voice” scored a 7.4 rating/11 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was 17 percent above the 6.3/ 9 one week earlier and on par from the year-ago evening. With stronger lead-in support, episode three of NBC drama “State of Affairs” perked up to a second-place 4.8/ 8 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 23 percent above the 3.9/ 6 one week earlier. But, before NBC gets overly optimistic, keep in mind that regularly scheduled “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS was pre-empted last night for an encore telecast of “Scorpion,” which finished third in the hour with a 3.3/ 5. And this is still a double-digit dip from former time period occupant “The Blacklist.” Three-week overnight track for “State of Affairs”: 6.0/10 – 3.9/ 6 – 4.8/ 8.

TVMI’s prediction for “State of Affairs”: Don’t get too used to it.

Tops at 10 p.m. was “Castle” on ABC at a 5.6/ 9, which dropped by a minor seven percent from the 6.1/10 in the overnights one week earlier.

In the specials department last night was “CMA Country Christmas” on ABC and “Greatest Holiday Commercials Countdown” on The CW. “CMA Country Christmas” was on the map with a 5.8/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., fluctuating by only three-tenths of a house rating point in the four half-hours. Comparably, this was 26 percent above the 4.6/ 8 for this annual holiday special on the year-ago evening (from 9-11 p.m. ET). And that translated into 7.38 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data.

“Greatest Holiday Commercials Countdown” on The CW, meanwhile, finished a distant fifth in the 9 p.m. hour with a 1.0/ 1. Comparably, that was equal to a repeat of animated holiday lead-in “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” and a slight improvement over regularly scheduled occupant “Jane the Virgin.” But a 1.0 rating in the overnights is still…well… a weak 1.0.

Elsewhere, CBS was hoping to whet the appetite for the return of “Mike & Molly” next week (at 8:30 p.m. ET out of “2 Broke Girls”) with a four-episode repeat marathon that fared in the overnights as follows:

“Mike & Molly” R (CBS)
8:00 p.m.: 4.1/ 6 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 3.7/ 6 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: 3.4/ 5 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 3.5/ 5 (#3)

Chances are “Mike & Molly” will fully maintain (if not slightly build) from “2 Broke Girls” next week…and beyond.

Fox capped off the night with a repeat of the pilot of freshman “Gotham” (#4: 2.0/ 3) into a 2.9/ 4 (#4) into an original installment of “Sleepy Hollow” at 9 p.m. Given the expected lack of lead-in support, why “Sleepy Hollow” was not also a repeat last night is a mystery.

  1. Looks like NBC perked up last night, but there was really no competition

    ReplyDelete
  2. It is no mystery why Sleepy Hollow wasn't a repeat considering the 8pm has 23 originals to air throughout the season (22 Gotham + Following series premiere) and the 9pm hour has 32 (18 Sleepy Hollow + 14 The Following).

  3. Boring night. Good job for The Voice though. Can't wait to see how CBS, FOX and CW lineups do in January against The Bachelor and Celebrity Apprentice.

  4. Monday Night Football?

    ReplyDelete
  5. There was really no broadcast competition, compared to last week NBC didn't really have much to compete with

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ouch for SH, does HH don't look to great

    ReplyDelete
  7. Castle always seems to dip w/out DWTS

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fortunately, Fox has far bigger ratings problems. SH should be okay for renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh man castle not looking good

    ReplyDelete
  10. Revenge and OUAT2 December 2014 at 15:12

State of affairs not down from last week and Ouch castle

    ReplyDelete
  11. The Voice is up a lot from last week, yet State of Affairs is not (add to that SOA didn't have to deal with Presidential preemptions this week).

Overall not looking good for SOA.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Not really, last year there were weeks when Castle brought better ratings than DWTS. It had 1.7-2.1 ratings after The Bachelor while 1.6-2.1 ratings after the spring DWTS series - no mentionable difference. The only episode which went without a contest show lead in was The Belly of the Beast, and it got 1.6, the same as Veritas had.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That's possible, but I think a pity renewal of TMOL is more likely.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i think it will get the pity renewal if it stays above a 1

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm not sure. It didn't really do that great last night considering there was less competition and the Voice was up nearly half a rating point.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Voice looks like it will be a 2.9/3.0 but that is without any competition
I still NBC should bring it back in March not Feb 23, to give it time to breath. Plus NBC is in a much stronger state that they won't die without it

    ReplyDelete
  17. Surprised that State of Affairs went up.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'd argue that NBC still depends heavily on The Voice.

    ReplyDelete
  19. SoA: 1.6, Castle: 1.6??? What do you guys think?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sleepy Hollow did great last night considering it had a repeat as a lead in.

It's definitely a sure renewal on Fox

    ReplyDelete
  21. So the CW aired two specials last night, one low-rated and one extremely high-rated. Seems unlikely, probably one of Marc's mistakes again?

    ReplyDelete
  22. They have Chicago Fire and Blacklist. Both will probably do high 1s for the rest of the season, and those are their biggest shows. I wouldn't say NBC is in good shape, the football inflation is why it's #1 right now, I think scripted shows its behind ABC and CBS

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes but since they are airing a two hour premiere, one of those will air at 8, hence leaving 14 hours to be aired in the 9 pm timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's better than 3 years ago when the only shows they had that could get above a 1.5 were Parenthood and SVU.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I sure hope you're right. It's one of the only shows on that I have to watch without fail the night it airs (usually on DVR, but as soon as I get the chance to sit down, I watch it).

  26. Christopher DeBono2 December 2014 at 16:04

Ah yes...The CW's annual airing of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. Happens every year without fail. >.>

    ReplyDelete
  27. Castle did a 1.5 and State of Affairs did a 1.6.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Half hours for State of Affairs: 1.7/1.4

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Voice really took a hit in this later half of the season. Wonder why.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mike & Molly repeated fantastic; it's going to have a good rated premiere next week

    ReplyDelete
  31. CBS can always count on M&M.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gwen Stefani is boring as hell and she's skewing the show old.

    Also the talent is lackluster.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Revenge and OUAT2 December 2014 at 16:12

That is okay for state of affairs! Bad for castle

    ReplyDelete
  34. SOA will probably adjust down.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gwen Stefani isn't anymore boring than Christina (who I happen to hate).

    ReplyDelete
  36. and how about revenge? how the show did last Sunday? does anybody has the ratings?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mike and Molly is always a very good repeater. This summer it was CBS's best repeater not named TBBT.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Christina kept the show interesting. You probably haven't watched a season where Christina was in it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have. But I dislike Christina (both as a person and as an entertainer)

    ReplyDelete
  40. http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/12/ratings-news-1st-december-2014.html

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the FX syndication might help ratings perk up this season too!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good for Sleepy Hollow, hope it'll not see 1.4 again this season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Damn castle why is it so leading dependent in its 7th season its a damn fine show

    ReplyDelete
  44. not so bad for Castle, it is still the 2nd best show for ABC at 10pm. !

    ReplyDelete
  45. I expected the drop since Castle's ratings are never really good in December. Hopefully it will be back up in January.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree, but nowadays a 1.8 is not a bad thing for Castle:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. lol defensive much?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not good for Castle. Could next season be the last?
The Voice is really down in the back half this cycle.
SofA is not doing good. Don't see NBC ordering more episodes

    ReplyDelete
  49. SOA wasn't on last night. It's on tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  50. SoA isn't on till tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sleepy still same :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. State of Affairs, not Sons of Anarchy.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well that's really confusing then cause when I see SOA I immediately think someone is talking about Sons of Anarchy and nothing else.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Don't worry, State of Affairs won't be around long enough for people to remember it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sleepy up yay I mean!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm talking about State of Affairs. Don't you mean Agents of SHIELD (AoS)?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Too soon to say about Castle. In fact, these are the veterans that have a 50-50+ chance of ending next season on CBS, ABC, and FOX and the list is pretty high

CBS—CSI, Good Wife, Ekementary, H5-0, Person of Interest, Mike & Molly, 2 Broke Girls

    ABC—Revenge, Castle, The Middle, Nashville

FOX—Idol, New Girl, Mindy, Bob's Burgers, Bones, the rest are too hard to call

Obviously they won't all end, but some will due to age and/or ratings. Keep in mind I only included shows that are syndicated or will be syndicated by that point

    ReplyDelete
  58. No I meant SoA Sons of Anarchy.

    ReplyDelete
  59. There is nothing to worry about Castle. It always dips after Thanksgivings. It seems like viewers do not watch after the start of the holidays.
