MOVIES: Sega Looking To Adapt Various Games Into Movies

13 Dec 2014

As Sega looks to turn more of its videogames into other forms of entertainment, it has hired former Break Media executive Evan Cholfin to lead those efforts.

Cholfin now serves as head of development and production at Tokyo-based Stories International, a joint venture of Japanese gamemaker Sega and Hakuhodo DY Group (the world’s seventh-largest advertising agency) that was launched to produce films, TV shows and entertainment for digital platforms in 2011.

Of the vast library of titles that Stories has the rights to adapt, it’s moving forward with “Altered Beast,” “Streets of Rage,” “Shinobi,” “Rise of Nightmares” and “Crazy Taxi” first as English-language live action and animated spinoffs. “Virtua Fighter” and “Golden Axe” also are part of the portfolio of properties.

  1. Ideas for flicks:

Bayonetta: a 3D and CGI heavy mystery comedy starring Lyndsay Fronseca as the titular character

House of the Dead: a Resident Evil-ish approach to the zombie franchise starring Zack Ward as Rogan, James Marsters as G, Imogen Poots as Sophie Richards and Caspar Van Dien as Dr. Curian. If done right they could cheaply achieve a good-looking horror flick

Mad World: a Sin City esque animated movie with the violence and gore you couldn't get with live action flicks.

and obviously a CG Sonic flick.

The issue is...that Sega really doesen't own much relevant franchises.
Most are weirdly translated japanese anime-ish games with absurd plots that are incredibly dated.

If only Capcom would offer to sell the Devil May Cry franchise for TV production...you could made such an amazing show out of that

Oh that reminds me of Space Channel 5!
If Jem and the Holograms can get a movie, they could totally make one out of Space Channel 5. It's practically Jem In Space.

  3. It didn't work with Prince of Persia and some other games so why should it work now?

  4. Prince of Persia was IMO one of the best Disney live-action films since the first PotC came along.
It was charming, fun and incredibly atmospheric. Still pissy that there's no sight of a sequel.

And I wouldn't say that it didn't work.

Resident Evil 1-6 might not be good movies but they're enjoyable and don't forget Mortal Kombat! One of the best 90s movies out there. Aged terribly but still the best american martial arts flick we have

  5. lol, I remember reading about that one. Was for the dreamcast, right?

I keep hoping to find a copy of that Metal Gear movie that no one can confirm was ever made, apparently a studio shot a movie based on the first game a month after its release and apparently it was SO bad that it wasn't just shelfed but erased from existance.

And let's not forget one important line: All your base are belong to us.
the world is in dire need of a Zero Wing flick

Lately their seems to be various Videogame to Movie adaptions taking place. All the companies want to have the next 'Hunger Games' style movie and they seem to think it'll come from Videogames this time.

Last I looked into it, Assassin's Creed was the furthest along.
Watch_Dogs, Far Cry, Mass Effect and Splinter Cell also had scripts that were being shopped around I believe.

Raving Rabbids was also being shopped around, probably hoping for the same success with kids that Minions is having.

  7. but, but Mortal Kombat 2!
and even worse series (the old series, not talking about the new series available on yt) - I know, NOT a film but still

Prince isn't a good adaptation of a game - not a bad movie on its own but not a good adaptation, maybe it should have been a separate movie.
Do you remember the old game Prince of Persia? Do you know any fan who LOVED it? Ask them and many will tell you the movie isn't what they expected/loved/remembered. BTW don't ask some hardcore fans about the new game for mobiles, there are people who strongly dislike it for ruining their fond memories.

  8. Far Cry actually got made in 2008 (better than its rep, still pretty sh*tty. I just have a soft spot for bad movies)

and I'm not too hot on AC, they said they were going to take liberties with the franchise and let's be honest: the only liberty I allow is the excluding the future storyline and just focusing on ONE assassin in a time period that actually fits the franchise (aka: no WWK2, no modern or semi-modern eras).

I'd actually WANT a dumb action flick for AC. As someone that played these games ever since the first one (the only games I have yet to play are AC:Unity as I don't have a XBone or a PS4 yet, AC:Rogue because the lack of time and AC: Altairs Chronicles.....yes, I even played the shitty mobile sidescrollers)

It'll probably leak eventually, much like that Fantastic Four film did that was never meant to see the light of day.

I still want someone to leak 'The Day The Clown Cried', it sounds so messed up that I wanna see it.

I believe Far Cry is meant to get a new adaption. They sold the rights in the same deal with Watch_Dogs last year.

If the leaked Sony emails are correct too then we're getting some Nintendo movies. More specifically, an animated Mario movie that could lead into other Nintendo movies. (I'm still waiting to hear back if we can post about them though because they're leaked stuff)

  11. Yeah, that was crap but still fun, James Remar as Raiden with short hair was a blast.
Hey....MK: Conquest was fun, bad but fun.
I love MK: Legacy btw. great new take on the franchise

Oh, I agree on that, I've never played the sidescrollers but from Prince of Persia 3D onwards every part (SoT, WW, TTT) minus the one that came out when the movie was released. And I liked the 2008 reboot wich had a unique charme.

I always try to view VG movies seperate from their game counterparts, otherwise I ruin the fun for myself.

I wouldn't love RE:Afterlife so much if I was hellbent to compare it to the RE game franchise (although the latest games are closer to being parodies themselves)

  12. Oh the sony leaks...did you read about the Spiderman/Captain America 3 discussion that seemingly ended with sony declining?

I don't dare to say anything bad about the company I'm trying to sell my project to but that was a....not so good decision.

Marvel offering to do a MCU franchise for Spidey wich Sony would hold the merchandise rights to is almost too good of a deal!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wich in all honesty wasn't the worst older Marvel flick I've seen. For being a mere means to retain the rights to the franchise it was actually fairly enjoyable and probably is still better than the one we'll get next summer. You know...the one with Dr. Doom being a broody hacker that calls himself "Doom" in his blog? :P

Isn't that the Jerry Lewis film that the producer "forgot" to pay the rights to? Yeah, that's something I'd love to see myself.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They might own the company but what I take from that is that they only make flicks out of direct Sega internal brands.

Well...after the brilliant Taxi Brooklyn (your move Joel McHale) we need more Taxis :P

Yeah I've seen some concerns online that Sony could be facing a big lawsuit because thousands of employee personal details have leaked (dating back to the 1990's apparently). Along with some private company stuff (the directors for Avengers 3 leaked a few hours ago, Sony found out and discussed in the leaked emails).

It'll be interesting over the next year to see if Sony can recover from this, or if this will kill off their film division. I don't think they were exactly in the best place financially as it was.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hard to say, the fact that they used torrented material for refernce purposes is troubling, discussing leaked info among themselves is stomachable.

And I really don't want their film/television division to go down, simply because all I'm currently doing is gearing my productions to a crackle standard :o

However no shame to admit that I REALLY want Sony to sell back their Marvel properties to Marvel.
TASM 1/2 were sort of meh at the box-office (given the name more money was expected) and their current ideas with the franchise (an animated movie, Aunt May, Sinister Six) sound almost desperate :/

I'm oddly intrigued by the Fantastic Four film coming next summer. It sounds so bad, but I'm hoping it's a case of 'Its so bad that its good'.

I love how Marvel is trying to spite FOX and is turning the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into nobodies in the comics now. (They cancelled the FF comic and they made them background characters now + various X-Men are being revealed as really being Inhumans).

Yeah The Day The Clown Cried was the one they 'forgot' to repay for the rights for. In the end they still filmed it but they lost the court case. Theirs like 2 copies of the film in the world apparently and both are under lock and key to apparently 'keep us safe'.

  18. It seems Sony is hellbent to recreate the movie gem that was "The Room" (wich I NEED to buy cards for a live screening soon)

i actually get why they're doing it, F4 haven't been a money-cow in the past few years anyway and Spidey got screwed over all by himself (aka. Sony)

no need to keep me safe from bad movies...I love badness

Have you considered shopping your project overseas? I've noticed that many Australian shows tend to be rejected British projects that find their way down under. Plus their recently has been a push for more Australian Original Programming so if you have the concept they may go for it.

Alternatively have you considered putting it in novel form? About a year ago I looked into the origins of Pretty Little Liars and apparently it was originally developed as a TV show but no network was interested. So Sara Shepard turned her concept into a book that became a best seller. In the end she had companies fighting over the rights to adapt it. Now she does that with all of her TV show ideas, she puts them in novel form and lets the companies fight over it.

I want a Howard The Duck remake. One of the best 'bad' movies in my opinion. It's quack-tacular!

  21. Oh he'll move alright, right into a discounted/free Sony 4K TV. You bet your ass he will :P

Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Altered Beast and Golden Axe are so precious to me, I would love animated series for sure!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I played the old PoP games, and the SoT, which was my favorite, and was not satisfied with the film.

  24. Streets Of Rage and Golden Axe PLEASE.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Golden Axe sounds interesting. But what about DMC? If they adapt that, they better do it right.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Know what my favourite game series is? Kingdom Hearts! I don't know if it would make a great movie (it could if it had an original story and was handled well) but yeah, the Kingdom Hearts series is awesome.

  27. I'm not familliar with those games. Hoped for something like Takken to be done once more.
The film industry is falling apart nothing new and inspiring to bw developt.

  28. My favorite series too. It's responsible for getting me into gaming which I almost resent it for. I just go 2.5 hd remix and am playing them in chronological order starting with Birth By Sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes! It's responsible for getting me into gaming too! First bought KHII when it came out so that was my first KH game then sort of played all of the others starting with the first KH. I wish I had of thought of playing the 2.5 HD Remix chronologically. KHII is my all-time favourite game so I decided to play that first. I love it (and the whole collection) so much haha.
