Atlantis - The Grey Sisters - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers

20 Dec 2014

No-one is blaming Jason for what has happened to Ariadne except for himself, he is willing to do anything to save the young Queen from the fate that awaits her. Thankfully, this means a quest is in order, which brings a welcome change of pace after the recent weeks of nonstop fights, battles, onslaughts and melees. After meeting with the titular ancient soothsayers, our heroes must seek Pasiphae and Medea’s secret lair in order to break their powerful spell.

There is a subtle theme running through the whole story that touches most of the characters. It’s a subject I am not generally too keen on watching in a drama - love - but it’s used effectively to motivate people in many different ways so that the plot works seamlessly. The mini-saga is wound up in a satisfactorily manner, yet a few intriguing strands are left to carry over once it comes back off hiatus next year.

Hercules ruminates on Medusa after hearing the lengths Orpheus is willing to go to find Eurydice, for example. Addy does well here, showing that he is more than the comic relief. Jemima Rooper is due to return in episode 8 and won’t be staying for too long. "You're going to see a short but hard burst of her this series," is what she told Digital Spy earlier this year. With Jason’s heart foretold to be turning black, and what we know of their destiny, I can see some dark days ahead for poor Hercules.

Jason’s path is a tad more complex. His love for Ariadne is obvious of course, but then there is his mother’s affection for him, which will be sorely tested this week. I doubt she will ever forgive being shot in the chest with an arrow by the one person he is now trying to save after all. Then there’s the comradery and allegiance of his friends which is something that he can always rely on. Lastly is the mysterious Medea, she and her aunt have a strong bond too as they are both touched by the gods and share many secrets.

Donnelly gives his strongest performance this week I feel; in particular his scenes with Sarah Parish are very touching. Shippers from both of Jason’s camps will find things to be happy about, which unfortunately means they will also both find things not quite going their way too. I know that sounds confusing, but regrettably, I can’t clarify that any further without teasing too far.

The Grey Sisters airs on Saturday 20th December at 7.55pm on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD in the UK, and at 9pm on BBC America. Below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.

“You’re exactly who I believe you to be”

“Stop it both of you, or I will bang your stupid, empty heads together!”

“They say it is cursed, a place of sorcery of the darkest kind”

“We will be together again even if I must journey to Hades”

“Ariadne’s father usurped the King, she has no more right to the throne than I”

“They’re sure to have guards posted, we’ll wait until nightfall”

“Just try not to do anything heroic...and by heroic, I mean stupid”

“I sense something in you, as you sense something in me”

“I want to see him, give me the eye”

“I’m so sorry about Eurydice, I know how it feels to lose your true love”

Trailer Teaser

“Stupid boy, it will never be over”

  1. When you say "shippers," I hope you are not referring to any Medea/Jason fans because I honestly haven't seen anyone rooting for them! I mean, do Jason/Ariadne fans have anything to worry about in terms of Medea/Jason????

So my eyes have a warning...is the Medea/Jason kiss in this episode?

And also, are there lovely Jason and Ariadne moments? Something to hold us over the hiatus? I felt bad for Ariadne when she declared her love for Jason, and he didn't say it back. Will he say "I love you" to her in this episode?

I'm going to guess that Jason will find out who he is mother is...after all it is the mid season finale!!!! And that's when he'll go a bit dark which is why I think you said we'll find things not going our way! He'll have a strong reaction to such a news...

  2. I also have a question about the shippers thing. I immediately thought it was Jason/Pythagoras and Jason/Ariadne! XD But its Jason/Medea as the other camp right?! Sounds like a good ep though looking forward to it!

  3. Yep I mean Jason/Medea shippers, you replied to someone who liked them as a couple in last weeks thread :) They are the traditional pairing in the Greek myths, so they have their supporters, as unconventional as it is in certain parts of the world.

As I say in the preview though, I can't really say too much about the situation as it would be a tease too far in either direction. Both camps do have positives in the episode, which obviously means that they both will have obstacles in the ways too.

  4. Yep I mean Jason/Medea, they are set up as the other ship this season. She is the person that Jason traditionally marries and has children with before leaving as he has fallen in love with a princess, but I don't know how far they will take this in the show.

I quite enjoyed this episode, it's great to have a quest which is something I've missed since the opening episode. It also allows for a bit more humour to happen naturally when there aren't battles and death happening in so many of the scenes.

  5. Sandi, how can anything be realistically positive for Medea/Jason though? She just STABBED the woman the he loves, Ariadne! How can it be possible that there is something good for them in THIS episode where Ariadne is almost dying basically?

Also, just because 1 person expressed curiosity about Medea/Jason, it doesn't mean they have a "fanbase." Didn't you also say that many viewers were were anti Medea/Jason pairing due to them being blood relatives? That fans reacted badly to the Medea/Jason kiss in the promo? So 1 person being interested does not equal a fanbase at all...

I just honestly don't see how Jason can just forgive Medea for ALMOST killing Ariadne. That would be character assassination for him. And it would make his love for Ariadne look weak....

Which pairing do you think this episode favored more? Jason/Ariadne or Medea/Jason? I would have thought Jason and Ariadne since she is almost dying, and I was expecting an I LOVE YOU or something. Not Jason having shippy moments with the lady who tried to kill his love....

  6. I'm very much looking forward to Jason confronting his mother and perhaps becoming a darker character as a result.. As much as I love romance in my drama, Jason and Ariadne are still a little dull when they're together and they could benefit from having slightly darker / tougher sides to them, at least for a while.

  7. I agree with you on Jason and Ariadne, both Donnelly and Hart do better when they are in scenes with stronger actors imo. Vincent Regan was wonderful at court, he really made a difference in those scenes I felt. Although Parish and Donnelly only have a couple of very short scenes this week, again they are pretty good, it bodes well for what is foretold to happen later on in the series I think. His scene with Medea is also better than last weeks ones too - I found them a little weak if I'm honest, nothing really happened in them as such, we didn't learn anything new from them as an audience.

  8. Meredith Lexie and Maggie? ;)

Are they cousins? I haven't caught up with the second season yet, just read about it. Is Medea actually referred to in the show as Pasiphae's niece? (I'm aware that she is her niece in mythology)
