Matador - Cancelled by El Rey Network

29 Nov 2014

Despite renewing the show for a second season before it even premiered, El Rey Network has decided to cancel the Matador after one season. Per deadline, the show did not do as well as its producers had hoped for internationally, which ultimately lead to the decision of not to move forward for a 2nd season.

  1. How is it dumb? From a business standpoint ONLY and that is it, and as a consumer, the pockets of a business don't matter. At all. So I am all for networks giving a show a second season before it premieres.

  2. I'm talking as a business, which the network is, you want to see how a show does first before you renew it- look at Fox getting stuck with Glee for two seasons past their prime or some of the Starz shows getting renewed before premiering to bad ratings. Obviously as a viewer I want shows to get a break and have networks believe in them, but here they renewed them too soon and then still ended up cancelling the show, so they did nothing but give them false hope/allow them to plan for S2 and then yanked the ground from under them. I'd rather networks wait and see how shows are doing, whether it's live ratings or DVR or strong fan following. Obviously it sucks for those who loved the show.
