The Walking Dead - Strangers - Review & Discussion

20 Oct 2014

After the emotional and action-packed premiere, we returned for what looked to be a sleepy set-up episode. But right when we (and the characters) started to get too comfortable, things turned. First Daryl and Carol had a sighting of Beth’s abductor, this time with a conveniently battery-charged automobile nearby. And then we saw a return of a few hungry Termites and had another abduction.

First, let’s start with what most of the first part of the episode focused on, and that in the introduction of Father Gabriel. As we, and apparently Rick, have learned by now, with every new character comes a new secret. If it looks too good to be true … you know how that goes. And a man professing the word of God as the only weapon he’s needed is a man who looks to be good to be true.

While Gabriel’s encounter with our group led to a rehash of themes this show has exhausted in previous seasons (whether it’s good or bad to trust strangers and that everyone has done bad things), the confrontation between the faith-spouting man of God and cynical Rick led to some great dialogue between the two and a humorously ironic exchange when Rick’s response to Gabriel’s statement that he hasn’t killed anyone was a completely serious, “Why?” Rick was of course following the line of questioning he has used on everyone since Clara in the season 4 premiere, but somehow Gabriel’s answer seemed the most absurd. It was followed by a response by Rick, in a wonderful delivery by Andrew Lincoln, “What have you done?”

A tour of Gabriel’s church led to some perfectly paired discoveries by several of the characters while clearing the structure before the rest of the group entered. Carol flipped through a notebook with the commandment, “Thou shall not kill” standing out in all caps. Carol, of course, is feeling guilt over killing Karen and David, and possibly over Lizzie and Mika too. She’s trying to live with the consequences, but it’s obviously still wearing on her has she later appears to be attempting to leave the group when Daryl confronts her by the car.

Michonne, meanwhile, found a room with drawings of baby Moses, with the words “40 years of wandering” scribbled on one, paralleling her own period of being lost and wandering with the walkers. The other meaningful discovery was Glenn finding a message about not growing weary of doing good. Glenn has tried to remember and live by the lessons Hershel taught him and was one of the people to remind Rick in the previous episode that they needed to be the type of people who let strangers out of the cargo containers at Terminus. The message seemed to reaffirm to him that he was on the right path.

Beth’s Abduction & The Car

We had another sighting of the car that Daryl witnessed after Beth was abducted. In both cases, this car, which has a cross on the back, was returning to a place with religious significance. The mortuary wasn’t a church exactly, but there was a burial ground out front, and there are usually religious overtones to funeral services. I’m guessing that there’s a connection between the driver and Father Gabriel. Friend or foe is unknown, but I’m willing to bet Father Gabriel’s secret is tied to Beth’s abduction – if, for no other reason, then Rick’s weighty threat to kill Father Gabriel if his secret results in any of their group being hurt loses some impact if nothing ever comes from it.

Bob & the Termites

So Bob was the unlucky victim snatched by Gareth and his group – as we saw them snacking on his leg at the end of the episode. Gareth talked about there being a cosmic justice in it being Bob. I suppose in Gareth’s warped mind that was because Bob idealistically tried to convince him that they could go back – by following Eugene to Washington and trying to reset the world. Gareth had told Bob that there’s no going back, and he repeated it again when he was holding Bob captive. Bob also, earlier in the episode, had tried to convince Rick to support Abraham and Eugene in their quest. He had warned Rick about changing so much that he becomes a person who doesn’t belong in their old world anymore.

I’m putting out a spoiler alert for the next few couple of paragraphs. Although what I’ll be saying is speculation on my part, it follows a similar path of a different character from the comics, so if you don’t want to risk being spoiled, stop reading now. You can jump down to the “Other Thoughts” section.

I got the impression that Bob was bit when in the water. When he was pulled down by a walker, my initial thoughts were that Bob had survived at least two close calls already (in the season 4 premiere when the shelving fell on him, and in Alone, when the walker bit the bandage). Bob’s changed. He’s had growth, and his character arc was completed with him learning to let go of his fear and become part of a group again, so I thought he wouldn’t survive this latest attack. His reaction with Sasha later (asking for the extra kiss), and then his tears by the tree before he was captured seemed to confirm my suspicions.

And that leads to the next question, which is what happens if cannibals eat meat of the infected? To be honest, I’m not clear why any human meat at this point would be good, considering everyone’s infected in the sense that they will all turn when they die, but there seems to be a different level of infection for those bit by walkers. In an ironic twist, Gareth may get his cosmic justice after all.

Other Thoughts:

- First, I really appreciated some of the some moments throughout the episode in which loose ends were tied up. Rick and Tara finally had the conversation about her being with the governor at the prison. I had seen that he had recognized her in the storage container, and I’m glad this wasn’t one of those little things that were tied up off screen, as these type of things are so often with so many other shows.

- Also, I was glad to see Tara confess to being at the prison to Maggie. She looked very thoughtful earlier in the episode when Glenn said that he had learned that there’s nothing left in this world that isn’t hidden. Tara tells Maggie that she didn’t want the fact that she was at the prison to be hidden.

- The award for the best line of the episode goes to Rick: “Let me take a look around first. We just want to hold onto our squirrels.”

- Runner ups are from Rick to Carol: “I sent you away to this, and now we’re joining you. Will you have us?” And from Daryl (with his squirrels): “We surrender.”

- The Termites group included the guy who Tyreese let live. I’m betting on a reunion between him and either Tyreese or Judith that won’t go well.

- One nitpick for the episode was the group deciding they needed to climb down into the water with the dead walkers to get the food. They had the higher ground advantage and knives. Why not lure the walkers to them (remember Rick’s lesson to Shane with luring walkers with blood in 18 Miles Out), and then take out as many as they could before getting into the water? The thought that walkers or walker parts with teeth could be hidden under the walker was obvious to even me before Bob got pulled under. They also could have looked around a little first to see if there was something they could use to fish out the cans of food.

- Another nitpick was moments of symbolism that were too heavy handed. An example is Carol restarting the car battery in an episode about restarts and as Daryl is trying to convince Carol to try for a fresh start. Another is Daryl tossing Carol a water jug, but her load is already too heavy.

- The smoke coming up over the horizon in the opening scene reminded me of the smoke that Carol and Tyreese had seen from the hooch shack that Daryl and Beth had burned. I took it as a reminder to that scene and her abduction – as later in the episode we saw the car again – but I’m figuring the actual smoke must be coming from Terminus.  There’s a thread that runs throughout this series of burning the old as you start over. That was the sentiment Beth expressed when she encouraged Daryl to burn the shack. The barn where Sophia was housed was burned. The Governor burned his old photographs and Woodbury.

- Speaking of symbolism, Rick got his watch back. He had given the watch to Sam in Indifference, but Carol had found it in Terminus and returned it to Rick. Watches and time have played a subtle role throughout the series, with the camera focusing on the frozen hospital clock upon Rick waking up from his coma, Hershel giving Glenn his watch, and Hershel counseling Rick that to can live in the present when they’re farming at the prison.

- Rick’s speech to Carl about never letting your guard down, and Carl’s response that they’re strong enough that they don’t need to hide, struck me as words that will both pay off as well as backfire on each of them later. This show zigzags back and forth so often between the lesson seeming to be that it’s wrong to trust and that it’s good to trust that it’s hard to tell who was right there. Any thoughts on that? Let me know in the comments.

- Finally, I’m not too happy that Carol didn’t find Michonne’s sword as well. Michonne looks – just wrong – without it. Michonne may feel okay about losing it, but I’m not okay with her losing it. It’s unsettling.

So what did you think of the episode? Let me know in the comments.

  1. First, I'd be willing to bet that Michonne's sword turns up among the Termites. It's too symbolic now to just disappear from the show forever.
Regarding the section you marked as a spoiler, I have not read that far into the comics, yet I had the same theory. But your question about how the infection works is an interesting one. All along, I've hoped that we would learn more about the disease and how it spreads. Apparently animals don't get it. Obviously, using animals on TV is problematic, but I would think we would see a LOT more wildlife, as well as untended livestock. In a world where the human population has been reduced to a small fraction, animals would provide a more than ample food source. Which kinda pokes a hole in the whole cannibal plotline. Why??

  2. My thinking as well. Michonne will get that sword back, one way or another.

Good point about animals. Where are the cows? Horses? Sheep? We did see pigs for a while, but not anymore. Aren't they in Georgia farmland? And I have had this question since the talk about cannibals first came up: can't they find something else to eat, or is it so important to them to kill strangers before they are killed?

  3. I thought it was a great episode. Hopefully TWD keeps it up.

  4. Good point about the sword probably being with the Termites. I hope so.

I had the opposite thought on the animals. If almost all of the farms were overrun, as Hershel's neighborhood indicates, and walkers eat live animals, they've probably killed off most of the ones that can't outrun them. Either that of the penned in animals starved when they stopped being fed. I'm waiting to see a housecat on this show. Surely some survivor brought their cat with them?

Great review! Thank you. I loved the parallels and role reversals where in S2 Carol was the one who wanted to get Daryl to stay and now it's him trying to do that for her. And thank you for pointing out both the guilt she's feeling as well as the consequences b/c it's important, or it was to me. But I wished she'd opened up to at least Daryl, if no one else b/c they deserve to hear what she has to say. I get why she was wanting to bolt throughout the episode and I saw the video where she said she doesn't believe she fits in anymore, but after seeing how happy the group was to see her it's sad to see how quickly she wanted to bail.

  6. Just tell Tyrese the Termites took Judith. End of problem. That dude is a cyclone of death. Loved him since The Wire.

  7. yes,, at the end we saw the tree witht he sword marking-- they are usign it to cut Bob up.... she may not want it back now for sure!

  8. Now that we know Tyrese lied about killing the Termite in the cabin, and we know that guy was interested in Michonne and her sword, and now that guy is busy eating Bob, it's a safe bet that the guy returned to Terminus, snagged the sword, and has it with him. Add in the part where Michonne goes to kill the walker and reaches for her sword only to realize she doesn't have it anymore, and I think it's obvious the writers haven't forgotten the sword either.

Another element I'm hearing about is what if the Termites not only kill themselves by eating Bob's leg, but also end up saving Bob's life by hacking off the infected limb ala Rick saving Hershel? Granted, a lot more time had passed since he was bit, but the writers seem to have little regard for time inconsistencies in this show. In the GNs, Dale is the one who gets his leg eaten and is later hacked up and has his body parts spread around the church to terrorize the survivors, but they've already deviated from that storyline with Bob being the victim.

  9. Thanks for the comment. Good point about the role reversals. I agree with you that it's hard to watch Carol struggling with this and think she doesn't deserve the community, because most have done something that they feel guilty about. I thought that was a theme that ran through the episode - hidden secrets and the need to confess and ask forgiveness, although some were better able to do that (Tara) than others (Carol or Gabriel).

  10. Tyreese has become very protective of Judith. It's really sweet to see. Tyreese is growing on me and I hope he stays alive for a while. (how morbid is that?)

  11. I agree with the cannibalism thing. That's something people turn to when there are no other options, but there is plenty of vegetation and animal life around to be starving.

  12. I totally agree with you. I'm pretty sure it's found after or during the hunter's deaths.

  13. Looks like they're on a roll and this will be the best season yet. I have a feeling the "playing with time" statement Gimple made on The Talking Dead is going to be really confusing unless they show "before" and "after" prior to the scene. I had a feeling that Tyreese didn't kill Martin in the cabin, mainly because we didn't see him kill him along with him not wanting Carol to go in the cabin. It could be that he thought he killed him and left him for dead because Martin's face was swollen pretty bad. When I saw Bob go under the water and Sasha came over to him to see if he was okay, he had the strangest look on his face like "oh shit", then he asked her for one more kiss, then be broke down outside while listening to everyone inside. I have a feeling he was going outside and walk away to die on his own away from everyone, and then was hit over the head and kidnapped instead. I agree with you totally that Bob is going to play out Dale's death from the comics and tell them they're eating tainted meat. That's when Gareth hits Bob in the scene for next week. I think the hunters are going to take him back and leave him outside of the church. That's in the clip where it shows that red letter "A" on the outside of the church so Rick and the group will know it was Gareth and the remaining hunters. Also in the trailer it shows someone on what looks like a death bed and that's probably Bob when they bring him inside of the church. I'm really looking forward to watching Rick chop up Gareth with that red handled machete, just like he told him he was going to kill him with. So much to look forward to. Now, if I can just figure out these clips I just saw of Beth in the hospital and Carol is on a stretcher that passes her. So exciting!

  14. Just a quick thing- I don't think Daryl tossed the water jug to Carol. I think he was offering to carry hers but fumbled and dropped it, and that's why she smiled and said she was fine. I thought it was meant to show us again how capable she'd become of handling things herself. That's what I took away from it anyway :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah, I think he said, "You want me to carry one of those?" to her, although at first I thought he asked her to carry it. I don't know what that scene was about, really. Some say he was flirting. Some say he was being chivalrous. Much as I'd love to believe that, I really don't know what was up with that scene.

  16. walker bites give you a different infection from the one that turns you like a komodo dragon or something but worse! the walker bites infection doesnt turn you it just eventually gives you a high fever burns you out and kills you then the other infection kicks in and turns you. so i guess if you eat someone who has been bitten your gona get the same infection and eventually die from it. also we dont know where bob was bitten but its safe to say they arent eating the part of the body with the bite. i think bob will show them the part of the body with the bite and from next weeks promo i think you see bob being hit across the head while hes still sitting down minus the leg.

  17. Another great review, Chris -- and personally, I agree with several others here that M's katana is way too iconic to stay missing for long. It's probably what the Hunters used to filet Bob's foot (ew). I'm really hoping this echoes the GN in terms of a demise for Gareth's group. I mean, even though the infection resides in every human, I'd think that any zombie bite would cause putrefaction, and that eating tainted meat would cause terrible illness and hasten death -- something the Hunters, and all survivors, are clearly trying to avoid. I can only hope that what they've done to Bob may inadvertently save his life, as with Hershel. Bob and his sunny optimism have really grown on me. Though that "mystery guest" on Talking Dead next week has me concerned!

Agreed, I really like how the writers have woven in repeating symbols like fire and clocks to show that you simply can't go back again ... though as Daryl observed, they also suggest that you can purify yourself and start over as someone new. Carol was certainly "reborn" as someone new, but I love how they've made her into such a conflicted, tormented warrior. I think that's maybe what was missing with Andrea -- there was always this cockiness and swagger, and I think many viewers found it sort of abrasive. But in Carol, we have someone who's constantly resigning herself to do what needs to be done, and her spirit is becoming increasingly drained and broken. I love how Daryl found her in the process of trying to sneak away ... and then, how the tone of that scene instantly changed when they jumped in the car to pursue what might be Beth's abductor.

As for animals, I remember that poor horse from Season 1 (ew, again). It seems that walkers will swarm ANY kind of meat, which means the supply of larger forest and farm animals has likely dwindled over time...?

Finally, I just have to bring this up: Does it seem to you (by now) that it would be a smart move to get our survivor group UP HIGH, where zombie's can't climb? Either build a big platform in the trees, or clear an abandoned building and then knock out the stairs. They could raise and lower scouts on a rope or swing when they needed supplies. Too easy of a solution, maybe? Or just me being a huge chicken?? Just seems odd to me that the living would continue trying to fight these things on their own level. Although it does create a lot of great action. :)

"Bitten," not "bit." It drives me crazy how often people are saying "He got bit." Anyone who proclaims to be a writer should know the proper way to say it. Morgan may have bad grammar, but writers should not.

  20. Tyrese is Judith's surrogate daddy. He carried, fed, changed, and protected her. Just because Rick (and Carl) have been reunited with Lil' Ass Kicker, doesn't mean Tyrese will let go of that bond. . . . .
Speaking of I LOVED everyone's reaction to Father G's comment: Beautiful Baby! The entire group stiffens and/or changed stances.

    * Daryl & Carol off to find Beth
    * Bob - was he "eaten" by Termites AND Soggy Walkers?
    * one by one to Abraham: " What he/she said "
    * Don't touch our squirrels ! haha
    * give "that chick" her sword back ....... she may not miss it but I Do !
    * FG - What Have You Done ? ...... A priest and a car w a cross on it .... coincidence ?

    Is it Sunday Yet ?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not according to Morgan. :)

  22. Thanks Mary! Agree with everything you said about Carol. I love the depth of the character and she's not fitting into the molds that a lot of the male characters who also struggling with these issues seem to be falling into. I think she might be the best written female character that the show has had.

I have a lot of thoughts about plans that would be safer than the what we have now. One idea is trying to retake Hershel's farm. Most of those zombies have probably cleared out by now. They could rebuild the fences and try another go at it. I also think the guy who suggested Nebraska was onto something - find a less populated area. There are parts of the world where, because of the climate, are inhabited by fewer people. They should head north to Alaska and fish salmon and build up a big ice wall to protect themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks. I understand that the show has treated bites differently than I guess what is a dormant infection that doesn't kick in until you die. But I don't think it's two different viruses, it's just a different reaction, so I think the odds are good that they would have issues from eating tainted meat. I'm actually a little surprised that Bob didn't look feverish at the campfire, if my assumption is correct, seeing as it must have been at least a few hours since the bite, and it doesn't seem to take long for the fever to take hold.

  24. Writers also almost always have editors proofing their writing and catching their mistakes (which even experienced editors make). This is a website tagged "by the fans, for the fans." I happen to have some professional editorial experience but most reviewers here don't. But with that said, this review was written in about two hours this morning as I was rushing to get ready for work, and it was self-edited. If that's the worst of my errors, I'm not too concerned. Self-editing is a bitch. I would hope that you had gotten something else out of the review than a grammatical error? Is there something about the show that you would like to comment on?

  25. I loved their reactions to everything Gabriel said! Like he had wandered into the wrong show. This was a great episode, and I can't wait until next week.

  26. YES! In fact, one of my favorite "hell-yeah" zombie extermination sequences came from the book (not the movie) "World War Z" by Max Brooks. He played with the idea that zombies would freeze rock-solid in the cold. So in that story, humans fled to northern Canada and holed up in makeshift shelters. The few who found enough food and fuel to survive would trudge through these huge fields of frozen zombies and just take them out one by one -- like rotting Xmas trees. I'm sure TWD wouldn't be able to copy this idea, but what an awesome visual that would make coming from someone like Greg Nicotero. :)

Daryl tossing the water jug at Carol wasn't symbolism that Carols load was too heavy IMO. It was Daryls very awkward attempt to be chivalrous. He asked her if he could help her carry the water she had and when he gestured towards her he chucked the jug at her accidentally. I suppose it could be symbolism of her not letting someone else try to carry her burden. But I really just think it was his awkward attempt to be a gentleman.

  28. True, but times seem to mean little in the post-apocalyptic world. We've gone from it taking days for someone to turn to minutes, or in Shane's case about 30 seconds. Seems like whatever the plot needs is what the new times are. My son brought up the point that the Termites would have seen the bite when they cut the leg off, but it was dark so maybe they didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Rick read that book too. Back in season 2, he guessed that the cold would at least slow them down. I guess Georgia winters weren't cold enough though.

We're in agreement. They should head north!

  30. Re walkers eating animals. That would confirm Matt Jones' contention on Talking Dead (I love that guy since Breaking Bad) that zombies poop. Yes! Zombies poop! If they eat, they poop.

  31. I noticed everything in the church had meaning. Saint Sarah's Church? The doors are locked, walkers don't unlock doors. So he was keeping people out. He is rewriting the Bible. The plate "Give us this day our daily bread" The Last Supper, over tge arch "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life" Also the Bible verses on the attendance sign, some have been used before in the past. Revelations is about the dead rising and the good being taken to heaven and the rest in Hell.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Very interesting observations. I especially like that line about what was over the arch. Very appropriate! I noticed that he was writing down Genesis, but I didn't catch that he was changing the text. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah- Bob's likely a goner... but I really hope he gets to say goodbye to Sasha & die happy knowing he wasn't alone in the end. A happy "I'm really OK with this" death would be nice. Hasn't happened since Jim, and we never really knew him so big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah but who's to say the bite has to be on his leg? That walker could have nicked his arm, shoulder, stomach, etc. (someplace concealed under clothing) and still poisoned his whole system. If so, the hunters would have no idea until he lets them know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The amount of time it takes someone to turn IS whatever the plot needs, and it's always been like that, it isn't new. In the first season, Dr. Jenner said that the amount of time it takes someone to turn varies greatly from person to person. The writers' way of making sure there weren't inconsistencies in the amount of time that it took to turn was by establishing it as inconsistent from the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It could be most of the animals are gone between the living and the dead eating them. It's been nearly two years at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, the way it was presented in the comics, eating tainted meat would be the same fate as being bit. You get the fever sickness, suffer, then die. As opposed to eating the meat of someone who is infected but with something that doesn't seem to jumpstart until the first death.

  39. One grammar mistake, it's now officially the end of the world.. THANKS A LOT, CHRIS!

  40. For sure this priest is going to marry Glen and Maggie, and then, in the follow episodes one of them will die; and hope they can focus a little bit more on Maggie that is my fav character.

  41. I'd love it if they broadened Maggie's story. She has a great character, but they could do so muchore with it.

  42. That saddens me. I hated the horse scene in season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, me too! Even though I knew it was coming from reading the comic book. It's just worse seeing it live and in color. It's hard for me to deal with stuff happening to animals like that. I know it's fake, but still. It's like I absolutely HATED that episode of SPN where the guy adopted a shelter dog just to kill it for some stupid ritual. Logically, I know the dog is alive and well, but I still hate Ben Edlund because of that. It also shocked me Jensen and Jared, notorious dog lovers, were okay with it in the script.

    ReplyDelete
  44. In the comic, Hershel married them. It was such a wonderful scene. Some happiness in the midst of the misery. And a solidification of Hershel's acceptance of Glenn as someone worthy to protect his daughter if he should ever get killed or die.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is it bad that it took me about a minute before I figured out which SPN episode you were talking about? And I'm not sure I would have gotten it had you not dropped Edlund's name.

I hate TV animal's deaths. Worse than human's. In a TWD rewatch, I kept urging the horse, "don't go, don't go" when Rick was trying to convince him.

    ReplyDelete
  46. In the comics, the winters produce snow in Georgia. I'm assuming it can happen since Kirkman's from the South. Kentucky, specifically. The winters were the times in the book where they could catch a breath and concentrate on regrouping for when the summer returned. It makes sense they wouldn't address winters in Georgia as it's obviously a million degrees when they're filming the show.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah, they have to develop her character a little bit more ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, I don't blame the community. It's Carol's own internal guilt. But I think she needs to the community to keep her human. Her actions were motivated by her love of what has become her new family and she would just be a shell without that.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Actually, I think Rick needs the community to keep him human: he would've gone back to hunt down Garreth's entire group if they wouldn't have seen Carol. Carol, on the other hand, was only ready to leave them when she thought they were safe.

Problem for her is that they will never be safe and the problem for him is that he won't stay human unless they are. Like it or not, they are both needed to make this work, without any of them this family will not work.
