The Originals - Rebirth - Review

12 Oct 2014

‘The Originals’ is back, and made for a very nice birthday present. Klaus, Elijah and Hayley finally take action against the wolves after months of hiding and manage to take out all of the moon rings. Esther puts her plan in motion. Camille tries to live a normal, supernatural free life (and of course fails). Davina has distanced herself of the remaining witches and is keeping Mikael on ice. Marcel and Josh try to build a vampire army.

Most adorable scene: We only got a glimpse at Rebekah’s life with Hope, but I think we can conclude both are very happy. The opening monologue was great, I actually think they should do this for all of the episodes instead of the “Previously on…”. I hope we get to see much more of them.
Best emotional scene: It’s been a while since we’ve seen a vampire who hated being one this much. Even Elena got used to it after a few months. But Hayley still hates it just as much, if not more. I can understand that for a werewolf or a witch it must be a lot harder than for a human. I remember how much trouble Bonnie’s mom had with this. If you’ve been one thing most of your life (witch or werewolf) and those abilities that come with it are like second nature to you, I can’t imagine one wouldn’t go through an identity crisis when all that changes. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think we ever heard how long ago Hayley had triggered her werewolf curse. What we do know from ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is how much she hated even the thought of becoming a hybrid. When she said “I was a mother and now I’m a monster” she meant that she didn’t think she could both be a mother and a hybrid, especially not without having her bloodlust under control. I hope Hayley manages to find a way the work through her issues with the help of both Elijah and Klaus (maybe even Rebekah) and come to a point in her life where she can accept what she now is.

Most confusing moment: The moment that made least sense to me was when Elijah started to take apart the crib. He said it was to keep up appearances, but it’s not like people are taking tours through the house. There are only three people who enter that room and they all know the truth. Besides, hasn’t Elijah been trying to motivate Klaus and Hayley, and make sure they don’t lose faith that Hope will come back to them. Wouldn’t taking apart the crib have the opposite effect? If anyone can shed some light on this, please do. Maybe I just missed something.
Most badass scene: The entire ring-removal sequence was amazing. I love how most of the main characters were all a part of it. But when it comes to my favorite moment, I’m afraid it’s a tie. I absolutely loved when Elijah confronted Francesca. She’d been so focused on hiding inside her house that she completely forgot to pay her taxes. Therefore the city now owns the house which means Elijah can just enter whenever he wants. Her facial expression was priceless. What I also loved was the scene where Klaus paints with his enemy’s blood. And here I thought he was just kidding when he mentioned this earlier in the episode.

Most surprising couple: Apparently Marcel and Cami have been hooking up the past few months. From what I can tell, Marcel may be more emotionally invested than Cami. I’ve always thought they’d make a cute pairing but I wouldn’t mind it if they stayed just friends. Cami’s right to try and stay out all of this supernatural drama. Although she can’t seem to help herself when it comes to Klaus. And from what I can tell, Esther also has plans for her.

Most surprising moment: Kol is back!! I know some of you saw this coming, but I did not. I love Daniel Sharman but I’d honestly rather have Nathaniel Buzolic back. The whole possession this is not one of my favorite things (I know a lot of people agree with me here). Finn doesn’t bother me so much, because we saw so little of him on ‘The Vampire Diaries’. But where Esther is concerned, the new actress just doesn’t give off that same vibe that Alice Evans did when she played Esther (no offence to Natalie Dreyfuss).
Favorite scene: Again, a tie. One scene is kind of a continuation of the other so let’s just count it as one. The last conversation between Elijah and Klaus was a step forward for Klaus. I think this may be the first time that he put the blame on himself and not someone else. This is the relationship I wanted to see between the brothers. Where the mutual respect for one another is clear and they can confide in each other. Klaus finally recognized that Elijah has never given completely given up on him. Even back in season 2 of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ when he was about to kill his brother, he still gave him a chance to redeem himself first by not finishing him off right away. The conversation that followed between Klaus and Hayley was one of the first hopeful ones in this episode. Actually bringing Hope back hasn’t really been mentioned much this episode. The main focus was on getting rid of those rings. I do wonder what their timeframe is. There’s been a lot of talk about regaining control and getting rid of their enemies. But that’s not going to happen overnight. I’d like to see Hope back by the end of the season, but I think that might be wishful thinking. When do you think Hope will come home?

So that’s it for this week. Check back again next week for my review of ‘Alive and Kicking’ and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

Wasn't as easy to get back into writing as I thought it would be. Hopefully I'll get the next one up a little sooner =)

  2. I disagree with a lot of this. I thought Rebekah having the baby was awful. They should have just put the child up for adoption - no way do I buy that Rebekah (or Klaus & Hayley for that matter) could deal with a baby.

Hayley has had like 4 months to adjust to being a vampire and she has Elena-syndrome. Nobody else has these issues. Josh was fine, Caroline was fine, Tyler loved becoming a hybrid in Season 3. I also hated all her crap about werewolves being pure - if you turn into a wolf it's because you triggered your wolf gene and are a murderer so it's not possible to be "pure". Hayley had no problem using Klaus to kill 12 werewolves/hybrids for her back in Seaosn 4 of TVD and now suddenly it's an issue for her to kill werewolves? It doesn't make sense to me at all. I don't want to see Hayley needing two brothers to help her cope, we've already been there with Elena I don't want to see it again.

I think Elijah was maybe just being realistic. NOLA will never be safe unless they kill everyone who's supernatural. Marcel will never stop wanting to be King of the city and rule the vampires, the werewolves will never stop wanting revenge on the vampires and the witches are always going to be a threat. If Hayley wants to be with the baby she can leave NOLA and go live with her - there's no reason she has to stay there.

  5. The hybrid thing could have been an issue for putting the baby for adoption. Maybe she never will become a full werewolf, but she's still a vampire, so fangs and blood craving will be there...

Why do we always have to come back to TVD? more importantly Elena....they are two different shows......IMO. The shows are in no way the same, nor are the characters motivations.

I can't wait till they start to explore what the baby is. Hopefully they will get to this this season. Personally, this aspect of the show is my favorite. Not because they had a baby, but more about what the baby will become and finding out its importance to the supernatural realm.

  8. They seem very similar to me and they have a lot of the same characters. Elijah, Klaus & Hayley all started off on TVD and moved over to the spin-off.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, they've said on twitter that the baby is not a vampire. She's a witch with a dormant werewolf gene which will never trigger unless she kills someone.

I hear you.....however, just because a character starts on one show and then goes to another...does not make the shows identical in their purpose. New show, while drawing from the created character, still means just that....new show. I in no way see Hayley like Elena. Like there are no parallels....IMO. I respect the similarity (given that one show spawned the other), but that is kinda where it ends...Klaus is not the same guy as he was on TVD....he was the baddie....on TO he is a flawed but good guy -- anti-hero, which makes him kinda interesting. Hayley IMO is the anti-heroine, as she is essentially flawed but good. They are good foils for one another (not necessarily romantic) but more plot foils....as Klaus tends to go through the exaggerated processes of becoming a good being, and Hayley illustrates through her storylines the infinitesimal nuances of how a being gets there....the exulted place of goodness. Their journeys are the same, but to my mind Hayley helps to further and or explain Klaus's journey. I always thought it was a mistake that the writers kept them away from one another and did not allow them to forge some sort of relationship....as now it seems unnatural. Hopefully the story-arch for the both of them will define new levels of their characters.

I totally want the baby on the show. Only cause I love this new twist to the supernatural myths.

  12. hope is a vampire she can heal herself and other people with her blood because of her vampire heritage and also an untriggered werewolf and witch, and you're right camille can't stay away from klaus no matter how hard she tries i mean that scene when she goes to the compound to try to talk to him and he appears behind her several times and she can feel him that's definitely more intense than just friends they both have feelings for each other, and it WOULD be cool if rebekah did the previously on as bedtime story for hope, i hope hayley can accept being a hybrid, my favorite scene is when hayley and elijah and klaus are getting ready for the fight and hayley and klaus finally look at each other because you get the feeling they haven't looked at each other in those months and he calls her "Little Wolf" again

I too loved when he referred to her as that. I just wish that they would interact more.....for goodness sake they had a baby.

Totally flove your analysis about Hope being a vampire....mind you I am just not sure she is any one thing....that is why she is soooo cool as a character. I honestly can't wait till she grows up. She will be invincible!

  14. It's the same set-up though. On TVD we have the Stefan/Damon/Elena triangle and now with TO we have a Klaus/Elijah/Hayley triangle.

If the main characters on The Originals were actually Elijah/Klaus/Kol/Rebekah or even Elijah/Klaus/Kol this season I'd buy that - but having Hayley as the lead character and being a special snowflake just like Elena makes it too similar to TVD for me.

The only thing that is the same is that Klaus and Elijah are brothers. So far nothing is happening in the romance department....other then Elijah and Hayley feel something towards one another. In fact, the writers may not even go down this road.

I respect that you feel it is the same setup....but at the same time, wait and see if things transpire in the TVD triangle direction...seems kinda preemptive to constantly hammer this point, given nothing has transpired. A one night stand with Klaus, as we see means nothing, given how perfectly flawed he is.

I personally don't mind a triangle, I like romance in a show, there is something for everyone. :) I am in agreement that TVD was wayyyy to soap opera like with the triangles, so I am with you, in hoping that the show does not turn into that. But a good romance triangle, so long as it is not overly constant, can be a good thing....keeps me tuned in.

  16. You realize Klaus & Hayley not only had sex but have a child together? Involving Elijah in that is what makes it a triangle.

  17. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 05:32

Not sure if I agree with you on Klaus being able to impregnate anyone....the show has not made this point clear.

Yep, on triangle...but like I said...not opposed, sooo long as it is not like the bouncing back and forth that went on in TVD.

  18. Still, putting her with human people would make her vulnerable. Her powers will be there, she wouldn't understand what she is and maybe her adoptive parents would fear her in the end.

Why can't Rebekah be able to take care of her? Changing diapers and feeding a baby it's not rocket science...

"Still, putting her with human people would make her vulnerable. Her powers will be there, she wouldn't understand what she is and maybe her adoptive parents would fear her in the end."

Which is exactly what happened to Hayley, no way would she have put her daughter in the same situation

Well it is the same writers, and they're not exactly known for their originality. I still think their biggest mistake was killing off Kol right before the spin-off started. I agree that the main focus should have been the Original siblings from the start. But I can't say I hate the direction the show has taken

I was very pissed off by the lack of interaction between Klaus & Hayley last year. I mean, she was pregnant with his child, there should have at least been SOME interactions

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 15:52

I am in total agreement. It was like the writers had them on the same show, yet they never inhabited the same space....they would be in scenes together and yet never really speak with one another. It was kinda crazy if you ask me, considering the whole they are having a baby together aspect. I feel like this was one of the huge weaknesses in the whole show. The writers did not tell a cogent story....this created a hole in the plot which I hope they rectify this year.

  23. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 16:04

    Agreed!

Shows, have some similarity because they were all on one show at one point ---- however, they are totally and completely different now. IMO.

I do agree that all of the Originals from the get should have been on the show, and that the emphasis should have been on developing those relationships and seeing how the characters evolved. Hopefully, we will get that now....

I do however, FLOVE the baby aspect. FLOVE, like obsessed with. I can't understand why the writers have not gone with this as the story line/thread that holds the characters together....rather then the "get Klaus" story line.

    Agreed and cosigned!

  25. If you have werewolf gene, you make one kill and pay for it for the rest of your life, so it's a natural way of redemption vampires and witches will never have. IMO that makes werewolves purer than other species.

  26. Except there is no triangle the three leads confirmed it isn't going to happen. Narducci backed it up and indicated that they are not interested in a triangle. This isn't that type of show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry, Joseph and Daniel agreed to do the show if it did not include a triangle. They also stated at Comic Con that it isn't going to happen and it was confirmed by Michael Narducci. This show will not include a triangle pitting brother against brother. Perhaps Klaus and Marcel but never with the brothers.

  28. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 20:51

Kewl! I am with that. Like I said, not opposed, but I am happy that they are not going down that route. :) Good info, thanks for the looking out.

Its better if they focus on the supernatural stuff....Personally, I find that more intriguing.

  29. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 20:58

Hopefully your words will convince folks from consistently hammering this angle and being angry about. Considering that nothing to this point in the show indicates that such will happen!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I know... People are mad because they think there will be a triangle and some are mad because they want. As Michael Narducci said: No triangle, it isn't going to happen. Joseph and Daniel prior to signing for TO, declared that there show will be triangle free. I can see one or both of them walking away if Plec tried that on this show. I don't think the writers in this show go along with everything she wants as they do in VD. She wanted to kill Josh and as she said in a interview " her writers pushed back and told her no!" Plus Narducci is in control and he doesn't like teenage angst, which is basically what triangles are.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ah yes, but there wasn't love involved. It was angry sex and neither one of them wanted to try it again. LOL.

Once again there is no triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bertha Strongham12 October 2014 at 21:37

I am just happy that this angle can now be shut down.

However, that being said, this does not explain the writers neglect in allowing Klaus and Hayley to have meaningful conversations about their child. For goodness sakes they went through the battles to ensure that the baby was born, yet they don't acknowledge it or even speak about it.....it is plain weird. If the show is for adults, adults talk about these kinds of things and put them to rest.

Also, I would be be VERY negative on a Klaus/Cami pairing. This would definitely make me NOT watch the show. It would kinda be the same issue....Cami sleeps with Marcel....Marcel is Klaus's adoptive child....Cami then tries to get into a relationship with Klaus.....not a fan of this. This would be another TVD'esque plot convention.

  33. I think with Hayley, part of her dislike for being part vampire is because she was always a proud werewolf and a moral guide of sorts to people not she is a hybrid maybe she feels that part is tainted. In TVD they are also showing that Alaric also hates everything about being a vampire but he remains calm about it.

  34. 2 shows, Different dynamics, Same lore.

Explaining how hope was possible, has been explained, that certain parts of Klaus's werewolf side are stronger than his vampire side but I would say that they will go back into it later down the track, I think that they will have it that it was only because of Hayley being a "royal" werewolf that made it possible, other than that Klaus could knock up a lot of girls and build his army that way. A guy with that much stamina, could get around, if u know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bertha Strongham13 October 2014 at 05:35

Its the humanity issue. Bill on True Blood also hated it....in the beginning, until he embraced it. The books do a better job of illustrating this point. For that matter Edward from Twilight also hated it. Same goes for that vamp in Hemlock Grove, mind you for different reasons....he was born a vampire and did not know. But I kinda feel that there is a thread in these stories, being immortal seems to imply that one has to give up their human side, which may not be the best of things.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Agreed, If they title it "The Originals" it should be all the originals.

  37. Bertha Strongham13 October 2014 at 22:00

I hear you.....but remember that epi where we see that Klaus slept with another member of Hayley's pack....? That was left dangling....hopefully the show in some way answers some of these questions. For me, I don't think they in anyway addressed how the baby came to be.

    Well definitely more repentant!

  39. Most of the common factor with the vamps above and Alaric with hating being a vampire most of them had it forced on them or had no option on being a vampire.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bertha Strongham14 October 2014 at 00:11

Arguably, Klaus and siblings also had this forced on them, as well as Hayley.....
