Episode 2.08 - Heartless (10-Nov-2014)

As Ichabod and Katrina enjoy a brief respite from their latest tribulations, they attempt to reconcile their recently conflicted feelings, but a lingering doubt – sown by the actions of their foes – continues to creep into their relationship. All the while, Abbie remains intent on preventing whatever next move Henry Parish and his master Moloch are planning. Meanwhile, the Horseman of War is indeed still intent on resurrecting his Dark Lord, and summons forth “The Heartless,” a deadly female succubus with the ability to look into her victims’ soul and mimic their heart’s desire... before siphoning off their life force. When the husk of the body of a young bar patron is discovered in the parking lot of a local establishment, Crane and Mills investigate. While Abbie remains convinced Parish has no doubt played some part in this latest supernatural event, both Ichabod and Katrina try their best to maintain their belief that their son “Jeremy” is still not beyond redemption.

Meanwhile, Henry focuses his attention on the task at hand, namely, using the succubus’s unique powers to achieve his ultimate goal of facilitating Moloch’s entry to the waking world... but how her skills will aid his task still remains a mystery to those who would prevent it. And as bodies in Sleepy Hollow continue to pile up, Katrina aids in the Two Witnesses’ investigation, but it takes Abbie some time adjusting to the teams’ new makeup and to be convinced of the witch’s worth.

  1. should we be happy or feeling sorry for ichabod and katrina for thinking parrish is still redeemable when he's the freaking horseman of war

  2. That doesn't stop them being his parents.

  3. I do feel for them, as I think they're ultimately fighting a losing battle on that front.
But I certainly understand and don't blame them for their determination to try anyway. Granted, most parents' kids aren't bad in the way you note, but I think most parents, if they were in similar situations, would want to save their child somehow, or believe there's still hope for them. I'm really interested to see how that storyline unfolds for those two, as they work together to try and handle Henry.

  4. yeah i can understand that i just don't want them to ultimately have to kill him, i thought i saw some sort of humanity when he moved in the governor's home where katrina gave birth to him but after monday's episode i'm changing my mind on that

  5. I know what you mean, I don't want him to die, either. Which sounds weird, given he's a villain-but I just really like how Noble plays him and so I want him to stick around and I kinda want him to stay evil, too :p.
The weeping at the end of last week's episode had me curious. And he didn't look too happy to be getting scolded by Moloch. So I don't know WHAT that means for him from here on out.

  6. Exactly. You only have to see how long and hard parents of children with drug addictions fight to keep their children safe.

  7. I will love this episode. Apart from it being a Horseman centred plot, I've also waited far too long to see Ichabod and Katrina spend time together as a married couple, doubts and all, and to finally have Katrina take steps to become part of the team.

  8. yeah you're definitely right about john noble he's playing the hell out this role that you sometimes forget he portrayed the greatest father on tv on fringe

    OMG dying of laughter!
Craine is hilarious, the scene where Abby says " its a lovers lane" Craine interrupts and says "no need detective, we had them in my day, its a place where lovers could meet....walk hand in hand, with their parents following them for propriety..." HILARIOUS!

    @angela @raven12 ....Ladies!
Yep, I agree. Parents will fight for their kids, and rightly so. I loved this week's epi. Seriously, it made me laugh. I loved that Icabod and Katrina, despite how long they have been married, are still finding one another...discovering things. It is like a real marriage.

Henry, in my mind is trying to see how far his parents will go. He is still that same tortured and left behind little boy, who is traumatized by being left behind and feeling unwanted. I think there should be a battle or showdown between him and Katrina, as this was solely her doing. Given that Ichabod had no knowledge of the pregnancy and his existence.

  13. Children with drug addiction only hurt themselves. Those people can be saved through treatment and rehab, hopefully. As it stands, Henry is trying to destroy the world and kill everyone. I don't think there's a rehab for that.

Plus, he's already responsible for three deaths. When he re-awakened The Weeping Lady, it lead to Caroline's death. He put the Judas coin in to circulation, which lead to the banker's death, and caused the florist's son to murder him. Now, he owns Irving's soul and we don't even know what he's doing to do with him.

How many more people have to die while Ichabod and Katrina try to save their son?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with you. Parents always love their kids no matter how their kids do good/bad thing.

  15. Finally, Ichabod and Katrina are together! Now, we will see how they use a marriage life in 21th Century. It must be funny.

Moreover, There is Katrina in the team with Abbie,Jenny and Ichabod. It will make the team stronger and have an advantage to fight with Moloch.

  16. Always good to find others who agree :). And exactly. Never underestimate a parent's love and devotion to their child/children.

  17. You raise a very good point, too, except for the part about children with drug addiction only hurting themselves-I'd have to disagree on that to some extent. If I had a child, and they were a drug addict, obviously I wouldn't be experiencing the same physical effects they are, no, so it wouldn't hurt me in that regard. But it would devastate me emotionally to know and see that my child is suffering so badly, and if they honestly felt they couldn't turn to me for help? That'd hurt just as much, if not more so. Everything else, though, I can't disagree with you on.
Like I said, unless the show decides for some reason or another to redeem Henry someday, I do think ultimately they're going to have to come to the realization eventually their son will not be saved. That will no doubt be a painful realization for them to make, for sure, and they'd have my sympathy for that...but they can't stay in denial forever, either.
If and when they do acknowledge there's no hope for Henry, though, the next question would be, what would they choose to do then? Would they actually try and kill him? Or would they just want him locked away somewhere? That could make for an interesting debate as well.

  18. I like this idea of Henry going through some sort of EXTREME version of the "terrible twos" :p. It gives me amusing images.
But you're right about him testing his parents, absolutely. And you raise a good point about the showdown as well. In part because it'd be a good chance to see Katrina getting all fired up one way or another, and also because of the reasons you note. I don't doubt Ichabod will try and get involved somehow, both because he'd feel its his job as a Witness and also because he'd want to protect his wife. But watching Henry and Katrina face off on their own would be amazing and intense on so many levels.

  19. This is the mid season final, right? Eight episodes uninterrupted then break for Christmas then air the remaining episodes in the same format?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Am I the only one wonder when in the bloody hell we are going to get to Abbie and Jenny's backstory. They've literally given the first season and half of this one to Ichabod's family.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well said Angela😊 Children with drug addictions are hurting themselves physically, but emotionally they are draining their loved ones, namely their parents. Henry is emotionally hurting yet he is physically harming those who love him and strangers. Pain is pain and love is love. There is nothing stronger in this world than a parents/mothers love for their child.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi girls...Bertha,Angela 🌺
As a former rebel. Let me tell you part of the pain a child causes their parents is not just to push boundaries. It's also to see how far and deep their love is for you. Of they believe you are worth fighting for, no matter how low you have sunk. You find their hope in you, a salvation.

  23. "Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire" Oscar Schindler.

By saving Henry's life and soul, they not only get Jeremy back, but stop War from unleashing his powers by joining the four. That saves a billion lives. An those who have died so far.....I'm sorry to be a realist but in War there are casualties and collateral damage. War makes a victim of everyone. So we should stop the War.

    Totally agreed.

I'm with Angela on this. Substance abuse not only hurts the user, but hurts the family and the over all community. Your point on rehab for wanting to destroy the world....I think this can be seen in redeeming....redemption can be had by all. Henry wants to be saved. As we see in the last epi, he tests and tries to punish his parents despite Maloch not giving him leave to do so. As his parents each have important roles to play in the destruction of the world.

  26. Bertha Strongham25 October 2014 at 15:35

At some point they as parents are going to have to make a decision....Henry may need to be killed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree, but what kind of parents would they be if they didn't try to save him. Am I don't think saving him means he will live. He may still die repenting, saving his soul in the end. Leaving poor Mr Horns a horseman down ☺️

    This sounds interesting!

  29. I do not understand the need to even argue for the redemption of Henry. Since the new season we have seen him facilitate the death of three people (the bank lady, the flower shop owner and Caroline) and with this new ep it seems like the bodies are just going to keep piling up.

It seems clear that Ichabod and Katrina in trying to redeem him clearly value his life more than his innocent victims and for no other reason than he is their son. They clearly didn't raise him, and do not know him, making their reasoning seem even more nonsensical.

I understand that TV shows can have their own kinda wonky moral compass sometimes (see OUAT), but usually they are more upfront about it. Hoping Sleepy Hollow figures out where it falls on this and soon because I'll gladly turn off my brain for Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison. But that isn't typically how I engage in my TV shows and I'm gonna need a heads up. And right now I'm face palming every time I run across a Katrina spoiler, because Ichabod and Katrina's relationship be more unrealistic and just how many free passes is this character going to get?

    ReplyDelete
  30. yeah i was answering to angela

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think you've really just answered your own

    ReplyDelete
  32. No, I didn't say I switch my mind off when it comes to Ichabod and Abbie. I said would gladly switch my mind off if it meant supporting Nicole and/or Tom's work, because I think they both are amazing actors and will watch them in just about anything. Looking forward to seeing Nicole in some movies for example, once the season wraps.

But like I said, if they don't want me to nitpick the show they should make that clear, because I'm over here looking for consistency, easter eggs and clues about character development and if that level of engagement isn't something they are aiming for. Then yeah I would like to know. I'll watch it like I do OUAT, as background noise whenever it shows up on Netflix.

The comparison to the Lori Mills is way off. She raised Jenny and Abbie, probably until the were what, 8 - 10 years old? Even if it was closer to five. That is still five years. I don't know it seems obvious to me that there is a difference to five years with a kid, and a few weeks tops with a newborn. But that's me.

And there is huge difference between wanting to protecting two little girls from creepy demons and trying to redeem a grown man ( seriously even if we are talking mental age, he should be a little older than Abbie ) who by all accounts revels in the destruction he is creating - complicated relationship with Moloch aside.

I have yet to see 'Love' be a powerful weapon (for good) on this show. I understand where you coming from assuming that though. It's tropey enough, and frankly I might even be more comfortable knowing that is what they were shooting for. As it stands though, I've seen love for Abbie turn Andy creepy, love for Katrina turn Abe creepy, love for Katrina letting Ichabod fudge up everything ( Headless's escape, that mess in the finale, losing Headless's head), Katrina's love for Ichabod leading to her abandoning her child and making enemies out of her own coven and the Masons, Abbie's (platonic) love for Ichabod almost getting her trapped in purgatory forever, and Irving's love of his daughter tempting him towards the dark side.

So yeah, that's a hard line to swallow. I'm not saying your wrong exactly, but they really have complicated it too such extremes that all I can do is shrug. I wouldn't bet on it, that's all I'm saying.

And whatever to the disliking Katrina comment - my bar is set so low for her you don't even know. All I want is consistency in her writing and consistency in how the narrative judges her for "morally grey" choices in comparison to the other characters she shares the screen with. Literally, that is it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If you are looking for consistency and accuracy in the writing then you will be disappointed. This shows has a lot to recommend it but writings is not one of them. As to the difference in parenting. The time together is not the point in this occasion. It's what the families have been through. The Mills sisters felt abandoned just like Henry has. Their mother protected them the way she thought best. Katrina did the same. If we were watching the exact same story on both sides that would be lazy writing, wouldn't it. It's the journey of how these families will reunite that's the drama.

Same with love. They are not all the same. Katrina's love may have emotionally hurt her husband and son, but at the time her watch of protecting them was out of love. Abrahams love made him turn towards evil temptation ( could be argued if he find love her then or was his pride just hurt) but now it's turning him more human than monster of death. Andy despite turning to dark temptation didn't stop him from disobeying his master to protect Abbie.
There are many forms and results of love. We just haven't seen a parents live take effect yet. Could go either way, but it's the drama of it that's captivating.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Except Lori Mills didn't chose to abandon her children. There's no choice when the state comes in and removes your children because you may have mental issues and THEY deem you unfit. Abbie and Jenny knew their mother was unwell. They understood that she was unwell and their anger is that she wasn't well enough for them. They know she had no control in the matter.

In Henry's mind, his all-powerful witch mother didn't stick around him and didn't protect him from the abuses he received after the Dixons died in the fire.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In Henry's mind his mother abandoned him. He was still an infant when he accidentally killed his foster parents. The only people who could tell him that his mother gave him to them for his protect and had every intention of reuniting with him ( as Katrina tells him before handing him over in that church ) Would he still be angry. Hell yes.....as well as Moloch feeding him anger, he is also a sin eater.....all that darkness gathering to that one person. An it's not Ichabod but Katrina he targets.

Both the Mills and Jeremy are angry at their mothers. For abandonment on totally different reasons. It still fuelled anger. But like I said, Henry is older, suffered longer, is a sin eater and has Moloch as an earpiece. His way of way and options of lashing out are going to be extreme.
