Scandal - The Key - Review: "A Stepping Stone Episode"

24 Oct 2014

After last week's episode, the best of the season thus far, I have to say I didn't know what to expect, but I was hoping for things to ramp up, given the perfect launchpad was laid last week.

Written by Chris Van Dusen and directed by Paul McCrane, "The Key" was clearly a stepping stone episode, but for what exactly remains unclear.

The episode opened with Olivia and Quinn staking out an adjacent apartment when they witnessed a woman get murdered. That's a first for the drama, which immediately increased my level of curiosity. Simultaneously, Huck had resumed watching his wife, dying for a glimpse of his son.I was glad to see this part of the storyline show up again

Compared to previous episodes across the series, not a lot of progress was made with the central storyline. More emphasis was placed on catching up on some missed character interactions that had been put on the back burner for the opening few episodes. In hindsight this was needed, but it drastically reduced my preconceived excitement level. Examples include David and Abby's conversations - though the second one was progressive, the first one wasn't, and to be fair, Huck's adventures I just mentioned could have waited too.

We weren't left wondering what happened to Jake in the dying moments of last week's episode. Jake is already effectively sitting on death row, given Fitz's predetermined bias, and stood his ground right throughout. Even though Jake went on a hunger strike, mentioned the White Hat, and pleading to Fitz's emotions didn't buy him a get out of jail card.

Fitz was also on Mellie's case, and he may have finally snapped his wife out of her pyjama phase when he revealed why he had missed their regular graveside visit. Tony Goldwyn and Bellamy Young knocked it out of the park in this scene, by far the best scene of the episode. Mellie's phase has gone on long enough, as I wrote about last week, so fingers crossed for a change in Mellie's outfit at the very least next week.

Despite Fitz running the country, Rowan Pope continues to run Scandal. He has played his hand perfectly thus far he will be pleased with how his framing of Jake is proceeding. Surprisingly he's still none the wiser to the B613 files that Jake gave to David Rosen. I also said last week that Rosen has been stagnant but his slightly drunk state last night has paved the way for his level of influence in the story to pick up. I'm looking forward to that.

Abby and Olivia had a nice moment at the latter's home, and it was surprising to see Cyrus visit to reveal what was happening to Jake. This is the team of three that can help Jake, but how they go about it is anyone's guess, though we know Abby gets the ball rolling judging by next week's promo.

Lastly, that key Quinn extracted in the morgue. I wonder what's going on there.

  1. Okay episode. Damn, Rowan played that perfectly with Liv and I believe part of her actually bought his story. Jake is a cold blooded killer and I can see she feels guilty for letting him go with her. It really makes her look bad knowing he killed her God Daughter Ella's dad James and 2 innocent women. It is not hard to believe killing a child would also be easy for Jake. So Rowan is manipulating people and feeding on their emotions left and right.

What I love Fitz hanging up on Liv, Fitz telling SmellyMellie off, Fitz disgusted at the opportunistic Mellie "Happy" Jerry was murdered(Mellie is awful) and he didn't die naturally, and Fitz beating the crap out of Jake. Never Loved Fitz more...For one Jake tried to make it about Olivia and he can flashback all he wants to the Island, but Liv ain't never going back there with him. Fitz was all about his son and having to deal with his death and that albatross wife of his for the last three months. So GO FITZ! Being the good and decent guy he is...the one thing Jake did get right...Fitz will make amends next episode probably through Abby and Liv. In the end, Fitz always does the right thing and although Jake is a killer, he didn't kill his son.

Last week was better, but this episode was watchable.

  2. oh your wrong I think
and he's thinking of his time with Liv on the island to keep him going... its his anchor to not breaking... and Rowan needs to die a horrible horrible and I do mean horrible death.. for what he's done to his daughter then and now...I don't see how he sleeps at night.. he'd probably toss Liv in a hole if it would suit him... he sure as hell has no problem doing what he's doing so far...

  3. He can think all he wants. Notice Liv is not thinking about the Island. Her life is Politics and in Washington DC. She even had a fake name on the Island. It wasn't real...what is going on right now is real....Jake knew the moment they came back, Olake was doomed. He's just buying time now...

  4. Episode was kind of boring but I liked Fitz, Cyrus, and as much as I hate Rowan, it is fun watching him get away with his crimes and people are none the wiser. lol.
I was so hoping when those guns came in with guns for them to shoot Jake. Missed opportunity.
Liv is a mess...Cyrus is riot...David was right...he got that judge killed trying to be like Liv...
Abby and Fitz showdown next week. She might lose her job.

  5. other than the fact that Fitz is completely stupid to believe Rowan, first it was Olivia's mom and suddenly when Jake comes to WH all dressed and tries to tell Fitz something, Fitz is that blinded by Rowan? Really? As I recall Fitz actually trusted Jake - forget the Liv stuff - he would know that Jake would never kill his son. It's just a bizarre plot point to create a story. Oh, and suddenly, Olivia believes Rowan without question?

  6. Oh please. Jake fans are so simple, delusional, and basic. Jake is a killer. He's killed so many I lost count. Killing a child is right down his alley. Fitz trust Jake? Why would he. Jake has proven to be disloyal, jealous of Fitz, angry that Fitz has Liv's heart, and bitter because he's a jobless loser. Besides like someone said Jake wouldn't be in trouble if he hadn't layed out his plan to Rowan on a silver platter. You big dummy Jake! Idiot.

  7. ok I see now after rewatching the ep... Fitz is so ahh I don't even have a word for it.. he's not upset about the kid... he's upset about Jake being with Liv... what a total dick..

  8. I completely disagree. Jake made it about Olivia not Fitz. I want Fitz to get over Olivia. I want Fitz to divorce and date women, forget about Olivia. This is shondaland so that will never happen. I expect Jake to start walking on water in a couple episodes lol.

  10. Thank you Sher...Fitz was clearly only concerned with his son. Really Fitz has been about his son all season. Jake is so jealous of Fitz and he made it about Olivia. I want Fitz to date other women also when he divorce Mellie. Time for Liv to earn Fitz love back.

  11. I agree with you 100%.Everything Fitz does is not about Olivia. Fitz has more on his plate than anyone, losing a son, the mess that is Mellie, running the country and the love of his life doing his old Navy buddy is small in comparison. Jake was the one who made it all about Olivia. Presidential divorce would be a great story line.

Hmmm maybe you watched a different episode but what was distracting her was her BOYFRIEND, Jake Ballard not returning her calls. What she did throughout the episode was try to find out what happened to her BOYFRIEND. She even reached out to her side piece, Fitz.

There you go. Even in his conversations with Liv, he was all about himself.

  14. Actually Jake is the side piece and even Jake knows that. LOL! This is why he's always talking about Fitz...Too funny! Liv is in save mode and once she saves the needy whiny little insecure Jake...it's back to Fitz Mode.

Fitz is a married man. All he can do is play the side piece. His main piece is the First Lady. Olivia is a single woman. Jake is a single man. and by definition they are each other's main piece. And the only one who is whiny needy and insecure is Fitz. I mean his the president and he goes after a former Navy like a common thug. but the bottom line is this episode was about misdirection. If you are solely focused on what you see rather than what it means, you really missed the most important thing that happened during the Jake/Fitz scenes. They were awesome.

  17. the Best part of the Epi for me was when Smelly Millie Finally took a shower after 2 months and shaved off her bushy 1971 bush, lol...good for her...☺...

  18. Fitz is also a killer.

  19. Fitz is a disgusting jerk. Mellie is finally getting her act together again. Olivia keeps being weak, not the same woman from Season 1. Jake... I don't know what to think, he's innocent, but he's playing his cards the wrong way. And Rowan... I wouldn't mind if he's suddenly diagnosed with a terminal and highly agonizing disease, what a piece of ****.

Abby, David, Huck and Quinn have their hands busy, I like that. Cyrus is too one-dimensional right now, it's getting boring.
