NCIS - The San Dominick - Review: "A pirate's life for me"

The NCIS team this week had to deal with pirates. It made for quite a fun and intense episode, and we also saw Diane Neal reprise her role as CGIS Agent Abigail Borin.

After Bishop fails a training exercise (kind of), Gibbs and Borin notice a man overboard. When the body is out of the water, they find out everybody aboard the USS Serano is accounted for and conclude it's not one of them. They identify the victim as Joe Willis, a crew member from the cargo ship The San Dominick. Upon trying to contact the ship, Borin learns the ship is off course and is not responding to their radio. Gibbs and Borin board The San Dominick but are suspicious of what is happening on the ship. They are being stalled and Captain Tom O'Rourke is trying to get rid of them. However, he collapses and they discover that he has been stabbed.

Meanwhile, in DC, Ducky discovers the body does not belong to Willis. Abby deduces that the dead guy is Ernesto Vilandro, and that he's wanted for piracy. On The San Dominick, Gibbs stays behind after the Captain is transferred to the hospital. Gibbs checks the radio room and finds it covered in blood, demanding answers from a crew member. However, Gibbs, the crew member and a Petty Officer are taken hostage by another pirate named Renaldo. The pirates demand $10 million for their release. In DC, McGee and Bishop discover the entire plan of the pirates and learn they got on board by using false IDs. As the situation on The San Dominick threatens to escalate, Gibbs offers himself to be sacrificed. Instead, he overpowers Renaldo and frees the rest of the crew. Renaldo leads Gibbs to a shipping container which appears to be empty until Gibbs discovers a bomb.

As another pirate takes the Petty Officer hostage, Gibbs orders him to stand down so he can defuse the bomb. He tells them that they are set up by their sixth man, who promised the pirates an escape boat that would never come. The pirates surrender and the team arrests the real leader: Captain O'Rourke, who was stealing drug money from the cartel with Vilandro.

Also in the hour, we got to see McGee as 'McGibbs' as he was put in charge of the team by Tony. This made for some fun moments as he quotes a non-existent rule number 70. He also explained the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars (hilarious!).

I think this was quite a fun episode, with some nice one-liners here and there. Seeing McGee in charge was good to see, and I liked Abby calling him McGibbs. The episode was also intense and action-packed, which I very much enjoyed. And as always, I am glad to see Diane Neal again. I wish we could see her more often! Overall, I am really enjoying the season so far and I hope they can keep up the quality.

What did you think of "The San Dominick"? Did you enjoy the episode? What did you think of McGee as 'McGibbs'? And how good was it to see Borin again? Tell us your opinions in the comments below.

Here is the promo for the next episode:

  1. I also really enjoyed this episode. I liked that there was lots of Gibbs, and I loved McGibbs. I'd like to see McGee put in charge more often. Loved rule #70 too. lol

  2. I had been waiting for this episode pretty much since 11x06, because, I mean, you can never have enough Diane Neal / Abigail Borin on your computer screen, right?
Loved the training stuff and how McGee was in charge ^-^ But seriously tho, that Rule Nr. 70 will definetely be added to mine ;-)
Also, I thought it was a pity they didn´t give any Abby² Moments.... Still, Borin was once again amazing. I really loved her scenes with Tony and how she offered him a job in the end - and then told him he´d make her number three!
But my favorite scene from the episode was the one where Borin punched Gibbs in the shoulder - I just somehow found it incredibly cute *-*

  4. I really enjoy Diane Neal/Abigail Borin so it was a pleasure to see her again. Some Abby² moments woud definitely have been nice. I agree, it was fun to see Borin punch Gibbs in the shoulder. She can be like a female Gibbs at times.

  5. I thought the McGee scenes had some great humor, but to me, they showed how NOT ready McGee was to be the boss. When he and Bishop went to check out the guy's hotel room, they found the door open, and instead of following protocol, they walked in without guns drawn, and then didn't even bother to clear the room! McGee got Gibbs quirks right, but can't quite follow them up with the confidence and authority necessary to lead. Which is fine, I enjoyed the scenes and Tim's efforts. Best for me was finally seeing the strong, confident Tony I miss so much, and all the Borin/Tony/Gibbs interactions were great. Also loved seeing Tony do some more mentoring with Bishop, which is one of my fave things this season. All in all a fun ep with a great team dynamic.
