MOVIES: Doctor Strange - Benedict Cumberbatch gets Titular Role

27 Oct 2014

Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. I’m hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations for the superhero pic. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a big job

  2. Not official yet. And if it is, it's gross because Marvel should cast a person of color and not whitewash the role.

  5. so marvel's really going to delve into magic and the mystics cool

  6. Hmm I want more POC badly but they haven't whitewashed the role, Stephen Strange is white in the comics.

  7. I like Cumberbatch but I'm not overjoyed with this casting, it seems predictable. I would have liked a more out there choice.

  8. I was more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing the role...not a big fan of Cumberbatch

  9. No thank you. There were so many fancasting suggestions I could have gotten behind or accepted, this is the one that I was fervently hoping wouldn't end up being true. Give me Oded Fehr, Timothy Olyphant, Alexander Siddig, hell even Joaquin Phoenix or Ethan Hawke. Cumberbatch is in enough fandoms, he doesn't need to be in this one.

  10. What a disaster...

  11. I love Benedict Cumberbatch (he was brilliant in Star Trek) but Marvel went with such an expected/unsurprising choice. I would have liked to see Joaquin Phoenix or Keanu Reeves take the role but oh well. I'm intrigued to see how Benedict will look like as Stephen :)

  13. Great actor and all, but damn it. The busier he gets the harder it will be to get more Sherlock.

  14. Awesome, he'll be great in the role.

  15. That's exactly what I was thinking, it's like they didn't even bother looking for someone

  16. Really? Gross? Because they cast a white actor to play a white character? No race-bending is now gross?

  17. I think they really wanted Joaquin Phoenix but he was hesitant to be tied up in the long movie contracts Marvel has and in that kind of special effects heavy film but its a weird jump from someone like Phoenix to Cumberbatch.

  18. Yes!!!!!!!!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

  19. Why is it weird? He has been mentioned in connection with the part since the very beginning, the only hindrance was a scheduling conflict which might now be solved. And considering he just won an Emmy and he might be in the Oscar race for Imitation Game AND he's actually willing to do sci-fi unlike Phoenix, what's so weird about him as compared to Phoenix?

  20. terrible choice, he was TERRIBLE in Star Trek Into Darkness and proved that he either is only limited to the role of Sherlock or is overhyped by his fangirls (haven't seen Sherlock)

  21. The way my friends who read the comics have been talking, I thought the character was a POC. I'm confused now.

Anyway, it's just a rumor so I'm not going to get upset or anything until this has been confirmed.

  22. I thought the character was a POC based on the way my friends who read the comics have been talking about this for months.

  23. Its weird because Phoenix was an out there choice really, someone you wouldn't expect in that role so it seemed like Marvel were going for a slightly different actor and then they ended up with Cumberbatch who has done sci-fi/fantasy already and is always linked with these kind of roles.

  24. On Tumblr I've seen people say Strange is a POC but he really isn't sometimes people just twist things to meet their own agenda and I know a lot of people campaigned for Oded Fehr for the role so much so they may have convinced themselves of it. That isn't to say that Strange couldn't be played by a POC, I would really like Marvel to say fuck it and do that.

  25. Yeah, Marvel really needs to diversify their line-up in a variety of ways (where is my Black Widow movie, damn it?). DC's ahead of them there and Marvel should definitely say fuck it and cast a POC as Strange (wouldn't mind if Oded got it, actually).

  26. I both love this development and I'm saddened by it. Love it because come on it's Cumberbatch. Saddened because Sherlock's production will probably be affected by it. Oh well bring on the Cumberbitches.

  27. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! He was my Brainiac!!!! T_T

And he doesn't looks like Dr. Strange... but i'm not very familiar with the character...

  28. I like the guy and all but this is just terrible casting choice.

  29. Meh... I like him but I think he's overexposed at this point.
I'm sure he'll do a good job but I don't see him in the role personally.

    Overall colour me underwhelmed...
