How to Get Away with Murder - Freakin’ Whack-a-Mole - Review: "Whatever It Takes"

ABC had another solid Thursday night, with fall's number one new drama How To Get Away With Murder setting the benchmark once again.

Written by Mike Foley and directed by Bill D’Elia, "Freakin’ Whack-a-Mole" continued to edge the storyline closer to the fall finale cliffhanger in 2 weeks time. To boot, the episode had the strongest procedural case of the week in its 6 episode lifetime. It wasn't edge of your seat, but it was hard to take my eyes away from the screen.

With all but one of the Keating 5, as we heard Annalise refer to them last night, getting an episode that was more or less focused on them, last night it was Asher who took center stage in what was one of the better individual character development stints thus far. Mat McGorry stepped up well and did a solid job portraying his character.

The son of a long time judge, Asher obviously had a more posh upbringing - something his colleagues were happy to coat their knives in as they prodded away at him in the office. In the flashforwards we saw Asher unaware of what had unfolded inside the Keating household as his Keating 5 colleagues lay low, only to almost have their cover blown once again during their road trip to the place where they dumped Sam's body. We also discovered that Asher and Bonnie cosy up to one another, which I'm guessing a lot of people didn't see coming. Watching this unfold should be a lot of fun.

In working their biggest case yet, Annalise's team came together stronger than ever, paving the way for Keating's stunning scenes in court. Viola Davis absolutely nailed those scenes - her performance was as good, if not better, than many of James Spader's speeches in another ABC legal drama, Boston Legal.

The case aside, Keating's actions in her defense of Rebecca were massive in last night's episode. Getting Frank to plant the phone wasn't something I saw coming, and her reiteration to Wes that she did whatever it took was pretty ominous. Couple that with the fact that Keating also used that phone to keep her husband on an invisible leash and you see some pretty alarming trends beginning to appear. Unbeknownst to Keating, her boy toy Nate witnessed the phone being planted. If there's a bookie somewhere offering odds for this blowing up in Keating's face, take my money!

Wes was out of sorts last night, and we never really got to the bottom of that. While Annalise had the phone planted to effectively win him over, he was still a bit off. I also found it strange that Annalise visited his apartment, while also noticing scratches on the wall, possibly caused by a murder. Wes got his wish, however, with Rebecca being vindicated, for now.

I also enjoyed Laurel last night. Her coming onto Frank was pretty devious, but lines up with the events of last week's flash forwards. Bonnie got in the way, but it seems her resistance will prove futile. You can't deny the chemistry between Frank and Laurel though. I thought they were going to go at it then and there!

I think that sums things up pretty well for this episode. The next two are where it's going to happen, so I'll be glued to my screen next Thursday. 1. HTGAWM just gets better week by week. Viola Davis and the writers deserve awards for this excellent show.

  2. I only hope they can top themselves even better with a second season....

  3. I am curious if they will have an all new cast of students for season 2, or keep this current cast and have them commit another murder or scandalous act that they have to cover up?

  4. Interesting theory. But why would they be developing each character on an individual basis if they were to do that?

  5. I agree this show is unbelievably good, the writing and acting continues to amaze me, last night feature of Asher we finally see what makes him tick, so far he's mastered the snarky, pompous attitude, glad to see his layers being peeled, but he and Bonnie being snuggle buddies, damn sure didn't see that coming, why did Frank plant the evidence in broad daylight you just know that's not going to end well, I think Wes was acting the way he was because he knew Annalise had evidence to clear Rebecca and she was holding it he knows she's a liar, she just doesn't know where Wes is coming from, she underestimated the puppy, he very well might be Annalise long lost son, getting down to the wire I'm excited!!!

  6. Another outstanding episode! This show never ceases to amaze me. Only two more episodes this year and we are going to find out who killed Sam. This is going to be very interesting and I agree, I will be glued to my screen. Hopefully the show will return in January.

  7. The center of the show is Viola Davis, and during the pilot she said that each year she selects the top students to work for her.

Theoretically that could mean that each year (season) there is a new crop of law students that get selected to work for her.

In that sense the series could work almost as an anthology with Viola in the center and the students changing out every season.

If the show is not done that way I'm curious how they will extend the storyline for a second season.

  8. "Murder" continues to be my #1 Must-See TV show. And the latest episode did not disappoint. The biggest shocker, of course, is the Asher/Bonnie hook-up. And I so loved it: the quiet goody-two-shoes types always have a "dark" side: hooking up with a student, after constantly trashing Frank for doing so, is just perfect. The two cases of the night were excellently written, acted, directed. It's hard to believe that the show will be able to maintain this level of writing for the entire season--but I'm hoping it will. Lastly, I can't wait until the obvious Wes/Rebecca episode: he has an inner toughness that could very well go dark, and she has a hurt-puppy quality that is so appealing and sexy. Together, they could be very toxic (like the characters in Tarantino's "True Romance")--and the sexual chemistry between these two actors is the best on the show. Burn, baby, burn!

  10. Tempted to say that the scene in which Annalise was ranting on and on, despite the judge shouting at her to stop, is probably the best scene of the show so far. That was brilliant. Everything is building to a cliffhanger of volcano-sized proportions and I cannot wait to see how they go into the midseason hiatus.

  11. Best episode of the show, so far. The case of the week was great and so were the flashforwards.

I liked seeing another side of Asher than just being "douche-face".

Frank is so stupid. If I was going to plant evidence in someone's car, I wouldn't do so in broad daylight and wear a hoodie to cover my face.

  12. Well, when you put it like that, it makes perfect sense.

  13. That copy Wes has in his safe deposit box where he wrote everything down.....ruh ruh that can't be good....I feel like that is going to come back and bite them!

Do we know WHO frank is? He is LIKE family to Annaliese. What is his job title? Why does he say he isn't an officer of the court?

There is a weird history between Bonnie frank and Annaliese that I think is KEY. Bonnie is protective of frank and Annaliese..... Why.

  14. The Balcklist, AHS and This one had me bow to them. Excellent episodes.
Finally the thing i have been asking "where the hell is Asher" and damn i didnt see that one coming.
I thought they were going week after week thing, it said at the beggining that there were 5 weeks till the flashbacks events but in the promos says there are only two episodes left and not five as i was thinking...
That move Annalise made with Frank oplating evidence was really idiotic and he did it in the freaking midle of the day. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

  15. I watched 1x05 and 1x06 back-to-back wow, I'm addicted, the cast is very strong and Viola Davis scene in the court this last episode was outstanding.

  16. I don't know exactly why, but from the beginning of this episode I was sure that something "romantic" would happen between Bonnie and Asher. This show is very interesting and engaging because of all the mistery surrounding everyone and everything. Hope it continues on the same path.

  17. This is the best newcomer series so far!!Every episodes keeps getting better and better; in every episode, there are always some shocking revelations. This makes me wonder how they will set up the storyline for season 2..

  18. Am I the only one who thought that the end scene with Laurel and Frank seemed a little contrived? I feel like they may have known Bonnie was watching and pretended to not like each other to get her off their backs.

  19. Actually, I see the show revolves around murder and Annaliese but also Annaliese and Wes' relationship whatever that's because we still don't know why he was chosen.I don't think I would like it if we didn't have the same characters that we get attached to every season.
