Grey's Anatomy - Only Mama Knows - Review

18 Oct 2014

Outstanding. It’s been a very long time since an episode came along which truly lived and breathed the very core of Grey’s Anatomy. Only Mama Knows took us on a journey all through the last ten seasons. Not only is the ‘daughter’ story working well but it was presented to us in 11.04 faithfully and beautifully written, directed, edited and acted. Every single scene, even the very few unrelated to the central story arc, shouted to be absorbed to the point where leaving the room, even with the beauty of the pause button, was not an option. If you needed any reason to keep watching then 11.04 proves that there is fire in the old boiler.

When was the last time Shondaland treated us to such a pleasure?

Yes, this is gushing. It’s an episode worth gushing over in a season that so far is delivering more than any in recent memory. We were scared to let Yang go, scared that this meant the end of the show as we know it, and watching this week I should’ve missed Yang but I didn’t. The episode and the story telling was so strong and the other characters so well written and intensely embedded and woven in, that Cristina was just a fleeting thought or question. What would Cristina say to Meredith, or what is Cristina saying to Meredith over skype?...and then I moved quickly on.

We earned this story and this episode. The arrival of a long lost sibling is certainly not an original plot. It’s a device over-used by soaps and often told in ret-con or with compromised continuity. It could even be said that it’s a cheap device for Grey’s to use in order to keep the show going following possible cast departures post season twelve. It takes the strongest creative team to pull it off so faithfully that the audience not only believes it but roots for it in a show as mature as Grey’s. Viewers have waited a long time for Grey’s to buck up and we are rewarded with this beauty; a story told with crescendo, in present day, weaving in new and old flashbacks.

This was an enormously difficult journey for the creators to take us on in one episode. In stark contrast to recent ‘band aid’ ret-con stories (and I point forcefully at Arizona’s miscarriage) the risk involved in delivering such a potent plot meant leaning heavily on a solid foundation which explains the need for Maggie’s ‘special’ in episode two. That episode in itself was a huge risk. The journey made even more difficult because the writers had a complex back-story to be faithful to spanning the entire 10 seasons of the show; a back-story that has already been dissected and portrayed in flashback several times with different actors. Imagine a piece of thread running through all ten seasons and in 11.04 the writers are pulling it so hard that you can feel the tug right back to season one, episode one.

Throughout the episode there are many ghosts haunting Meredith. At the start her memories were cloudy, she could remember just a whisper of life as a five year old. Slowly and painfully the dark truths unveil themselves, helped by her mother’s journals and by flashback through the eyes of a child. Running parallel to this Meredith is coming face to face once again with the woman Ellis Grey was – cold, ambitious, selfish. Seemingly holding on only with her fingertips, Derek strides in and reinforces her insecurities. This latter stream of consciousness was interspersed with flashbacks from previous Ellis/ adult Meredith scenes. Coming in from another angle Richard was dealing with his own recollection of events and facing up to how his actions shaped the unhappy ending. Flashback weaved in and out of his narrative too. It could’ve been very disjointed, but the slick, shrewd editing kept it flowing. The new flashbacks were realistic; the flashbacks from past episodes slotted in perfectly. There was always a risk that the story would be forced to fit with what had been screened previously but this was never evident. The constant flickering back and forth was intense, dramatic and a very clever way to show us the story.

And the journals! What a stroke of genius it was to introduce those to us many seasons ago. We have had and continue to get full value out of those diaries. Meredith reads her own kind of journal at the beginning of almost every episode so it is poetic (and I assume intentional) that her journey into accepting her mother’s past and her new sister comes via her mother’s chapters. Only Mama Knew.

Derek is forced to plough his own furrow and just when he was showing himself to be the biggest jerk of all this season he comes through in favour of sisters. He has a bunch of them. He loves sisters, he knows Meredith doesn’t so much. Despite his martyring self-sacrifice he sits firmly in Meredith’s corner.

Ellen Pompeo delivers a first class performance. Despite her longevity in the role or maybe because of it she put her all, her truth, into showing us just how much this new development means to Meredith and just how conflicted she is emotionally. She has also proved that Meredith does not need Cristina Yang to carry the biggest stories in this grand old show.

The younger Ellis and the younger Richard could well be their younger actor selves, they were that good, the facial expressions, the voice register, all so close. So caught up in the moment I failed to realize at first that someone else previously played the younger Ellis, but it didn’t matter. These were honest performances from all the flashback actors.

Circling around the core of the action there were a few other moments worth noting...

Amelia seems quite established now as ‘friend of Maggie’. We were given hints of things to come however if Maggie’s suspicious look toward Amelia is worth noting. It seems that Amelia may lead Maggie to understanding Richard more – what drove him to drink. And don’t you just love Amelia as Derek’s boss. She looks about twelve in her scrub cap but it sure is nice seeing someone boss him around.

This really was a retrospective episode in other ways. Bailey reminded Richard of just how good he is. It was so delightful to see Bailey back on top and rather beautiful to see her both relieved that Richard “did not have sex with that girl” and highly sensitive to his pain. Bailey on the board, ‘the transfusion of new blood’ is another wonderful thing to come out of this season so far.

There were two other subplots rumbling along the main action. Alex received a reintroduction to GSM as an attending with Arizona then handing over her peds floor. In her own attempt to be retrospective Arizona reminds Alex that while she didn’t vote for him on the board she does value his skills. The second point in this mini arc is when Arizona gives away how serious things are at home: “and if I’m gonna keep my marriage from falling apart”. It’s notable because rather than talking about who does or doesn’t want a baby she makes the point about her marriage. It was a functional point setting us up for....*spoiler*.

If you are fairly new to Grey’s, maybe you joined post season five, then perhaps the power of this story is reduced for you. If you’ve been with it from the beginning then this episode really was for you, for us. Reaching into the depths of Grey’s Only Mama Knows reminded us of and enhanced Meredith’s and Richard’s story as well as explaining Maggie’s. Mark Driscoll, Nicole Rubio and Susan Vaill stood up and were counted in this episode. I feel sorry for the director, writer and editor of 11.05 for what they now have to live up to.

Over to you.

P.S. Is it wrong of me to want Maggie to go simply because Wilson wants to go with her.
P.P.S. I don’t want Maggie to go.

  2. Seriously what the hell is wrong with Derek, He was the Ellis Grey but in his head he still thinks he is mcdreamy and continues to lecture and condescend to Meredith like she is still his intern, it making me really angry someone needs to kick his ass, maybe Ghost Mark or bring his mom back for an episode 'cause idk how much more i can take before my overwhelming disappointment and frustration with him boils over into pure hatred. He is supposed to make her feel extraordinary but he is going out of his way making sure he is still the "SUN" in the OR, his marriage, and all his other relationships except apparently when it comes to Maggie who he clearly wants to inaugurate into his cheering fan club comprised of his sisters, thats the only thing that has made him genuinely smile this season and it has me fuming his need to have his ego constantly stroked this season has attractiveness levels plummeting

  3. I really want to cry. But -maybe for the first time- not because one of our beloved characters died or left, but because this episode was just all kinds of beautiful. A reward for the faithful fans that have been watching since season one. A mirror of everything this show has been about for ten years. Everything was on point. Thank you Shonda for creating this show I have loved for so many years and showing me all over again why I do. And thank you for review, I can only agree (except for the Jo-part :D)

  4. I gave him credit for calling a truce on the arguments as this is a sign of maturity. Other than that he's being an arse. I LOVE the idea of bringing in Ghost Mark. In fact my alter ego wrote two fics about Ghost Mark ;)

  5. I found myself gushing. And I don't normally gush. I'm scared for the rest of the season. It has a lot to live up to.

  6. Best episode of the season so far, but it would have been a bit more powerful a few seasons back. I found it odd that with all the flashbacks we barely saw anything new, but I did appreciate them doing this episode and servicing old stories / fans. As someone who's been watching since episode 1, this episode felt special.

I just can't get on board with the whole Maggie storyline, her character is so off-putting. I love that Meredith is getting a storyline with some meat for once, though, because it's been too long (James Pickens was also long overdue and is getting some great scenes.) It's so odd how they not only conveniently never mention Lexi, but also never mention Meredith's other still-living half-sister, Molly (or Thatcher.) And while Maggie was less annoying in this episode than the previous few, I absolutely do NOT want her to become a regular. So many characters are being either totally forgotten or horribly written because there are just too many to service right now. I wish they has cleaned house a little more before the start of this season and focused on a few core stories... Stephanie is the definition of dead weight, she's literally around to utter plot-points to other characters.

  7. I agree that the episode was long over-due. Perhaps it would not 'feel' as powerful if it was in seasons 6,7,8 or 9 but it would have been better placed? Maybe without Cristina it carries more weight?
I think Maggie is here to stay. On balance she is far more palatable than the other newbies. I don't find her off-putting, though she is rather too good to be true.
It is odd that they haven't mentioned Lexie but that's because our benchmark is normal life. Grey's forgets quickly and operates outside normal when it comes to these relationships. Mark is all but forgotten and he was Callie and Derek's best friend - though he will probably get a mention next week.
i laughed out loud at your stephanie comment. Her scene with Alex proves your point completely.

  8. That ending with first glimpse of Ellis's Alzheimer's was great. It gave me the chills.

I was really against Maggie in the first two episodes and I was ticked off about how she handled Richard in episode three but I did find myself warming to her in this latest episode. I loved the scenes between Richard and Meredith and as for Stephanie I've been thinking the same thing why is she there she has no storyline she's not growing. Jo it seems is learning to grow as a character but Stephanie is still her intern self.

  10. It's so true lol, that's the scene I was thinking of. I almost couldn't believe it happened. The writers were like, "Hmmm, how does Alex find out Meredith and Arizona didn't vote for him? Lets throw Stef in the elevator with him and say she overheard it!"

As for Maggie, I do appreciate that she has actual connection to the main / original cast and some real story to explore, but like you said she's very 'too good to be true.' It was so jarring having an all-Maggie episode as the 2nd of the season, I feel like Shonda & co. tried way too hard to shove her down our throats and get us to like her, and while I didn't mind that episode (11x02) as much as I thought I would, it made me like Maggie even less. If they push her to the background a bit for a while I won't mind I guess, but the major problem with the last several years of the series will remain- too many regular characters, and every story suffers from it. I can't help think how great the series could be if they were focusing more on the stories of a smaller group of connected characters. As much as I love the originals, I'd even say Bailey could go at this point because they clearly have no clue what to do with her. And isn't April pregnant? Have they even mentioned that once this season? At this point I'd even see it as beneficial to lose a few characters I like if it means better story distribution and fresher ideas.

One thing I loved about the epi was how we the viewers get a sense of how Richard betrayed Ellis Grey, and why he feels such guilt. It put a lot of things in perspective for me about that relationship. It is crazy how Richard treated Ellis. They make a pact to leave their spouses, she leaves hers and he stays with his, ensuring that there was no way for her to go back even if she wanted to. That's some serious heavy stuff. Also his jealousy over her accomplishments as a surgeon....yikes. He ruined her life and ensured that she would be an emotional cripple. Not feeling so fond of Richard right now.

    Great epi.

I wonder if the tale is foreshadowing Derek and Meredith's relationship?

They mentioned Aprils pregnancy in episode 1. by having Jackson talk about becoming a father with Richard and then April touching her Stomach. Since then nothing has been mentioned but April's mom is supposed to show up sometime this season I'm thinking episode 6.

  13. IMO both Stephanie and Jo are useful but neither are particularly watchable. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Jo, Terribly written, badly cast and a rather artificial relationship with Alex. I'd be much happier actually with Alex and Stephanie but I've be happiest if the love of his life was a peer who really challenged him emotionally. Amelia would be great.

Oh I agree I'm not a giant fan of Jo I like her but I just feel like she is there to be a love interest but I do like how they started to give her some backbone. Working with Callie last season and the way she handled the Maggie situation. Stephanie could be a good character if they actually gave her something to do besides being Jo's friend and Bailey's shadow. As for Alex I think Stephanie would be to clingy for him. Jo works in that they both have broken past. but yes they could find a better fit.

  15. I've always been a fan of the ensemble cast. when it's done really well they keep the relationships tight and close so that characters interweave and interact constantly. They haven't done that with Grey's in last few seasons so the cast feels bloated. The introduction of five interns was a huge mistake IMO. Introducing new characters gradually with purpose eg Owen, then Arizona worked so much better.
April is the most underused character, she has/had such potential and Sarah Drew is a brilliant actress. Her pregnancy allows the writers some space to deal with Maggie storyline but I do worry how they can make her and Jackson interesting now.
Different actors I guess deal with their pregnancies differently. SD is on her second, it;s possible that she asked to be minimised during her third trimester.
The writers make it difficult for themselves when they build relationships with characters that are not doctors or series regulars. This is why Bailey\s character is a problem, or at least one of the reasons. They can't develop her romantic story arc because Jason George is not a regular.
I'd be very happy to drop Jo who's introduction is fundamentally weak compared with they way they've introduced Maggie's. Stephanie can be a bit part player for all I care.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm guessing provided her pregnancy/birth is okay Sarah Drew will get a big story mid season.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The problem I have is that I don't 'buy' Jo's broken past. It's not believable and I think it's because the wrong actor is playing the role. Nothing about the way she behaves indicates she's had anything other than an ideal childhood.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Spot on about the cast bloat. Too many of the characters don't feel connected to any main narrative so a lot of times in recent seasons it just feels like a show about a bunch of random doctors at a hospital, rather than originally a series about Meredith Grey, her class of interns + those who taught them. Naturally by season 11 things had to change, but I see Shonda doing such great work on Scandal sometimes and it amazes me that she doesn't realize the biggest problem with Grey's is too many characters.

Rather than having stories advance each episode, they've taken to HAVING to do character-centric episodes whenever they want a story to move ahead. Maggie got one, this week was basically Meredith-centric, and next week is Callie Arizona centric, and every other character has basically nothing going on. If we were dealing with even just 9 or 10 regulars things could be balanced normally. Instead we have 13 regulars + Maggie who gets more screentime than more than half of those stars. I'm in the camp that believes they KIND OF over-did it with all of the disaster stuff, but I sure as hell wouldn't mind a Tornado rolling through GSM and claiming the lives of a few of these doctors.

  19. I'm having a brain fart - was April's mom at her wedding, if not, why?

    ReplyDelete
  20. DarcyandElizabeth18 October 2014 at 22:56

Yes she was but you only saw her briefly in the pew and she didn't speak. they have actually recast the role of April's mom though from the one that was at the wedding.

  21. Agree. Richard has always had a dark element to him. I think it makes Richard more watchable now. He's been quite boring over the last couple of seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lexie is Meredith's sister on her father's side. There's no reason to actually talk about her yet or at all. If it's not directly relevant I don't think Shondaland will not bring up past characters.

  23. I guess one of the reasons this current sibling story is going down so well is because it's using a large number of characters...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bertha Strongham18 October 2014 at 23:26

I totally agree with you. It was kind of a heart breaking story, how he literally felt he had to put Ellis in her place, for succeeding by leaving her, and ensuring that she had nothing and no one to go back to. Its like benignly evil....

    ReplyDelete
  25. I didn't even think of that, but it's true. While I don't really like Maggie yet, the story has reached Meredith, Richard, Derek, Amelia, Bailey and Alex. It reminds me a bit of the old days where the hospital world we saw was smaller and news would travel through all of our characters quickly and affect them all.

  26. 11yrs in and Greys is firing on all cylinders!!!! Talk about coming full circle wow, an amazing episode beautifully incorporating years of small clues into one fantastic unveiling. Never thought id see ellis humanized, finally like derrick for the first time in a while. Thrilled to see maggie killing it at her job. Yay to meredith growing a heart and sharing that moment with her sister.

Love bailey hitting the ground running as a board memberm she definitely provided some needed comedy relief as well as amelia.

Alex being upset is understandable, im glad they didnt prolong his anger. I love the set up the writers made for next week by having Arizona telling him she needs him to run her department so she could save her marriage. Forshadowing much?

It was a good epi for sure. However, Bailey annoys the crap outta me! I just wish she would find a lab and stay in it.

  28. What do you think of Amelia's addition to the cast? (Bloated cast aside)

I feel terrible for not liking her....but the self righteousness is kinda insufferable. Esp during this epi.

  31. I feel like most of the doctors are self righteous ie derrick. But hey she short and has been overlooked for a long time. She finally got her rightful shine and shes gonna let it be known i have no issues with her.

  32. I only ever saw the occasional episode of Private Practice so I don't know much about her other than what has been stated on Grey's (recovering addict, etc.) I like that she's at least tied to people and that there are built-in stories to explore. I'm sort of impartial to her right now but I think the actress seems decent enough and I'd be interested to see her get some good material.

  35. Yeah, I know that, but it is kinda relevant since revealed herself to Mer unannounced just like Maggie did.
