Grey's Anatomy - Bend and Break - Review

27 Oct 2014

I feel free. Do you feel free? I feel free. Honestly I do. I breathe a little easier now, knowing that Callie and Arizona have finally put us all out of our misery and ended the torture their relationship has been to the viewers. Okay, that’s a little dramatic but let’s face it, watching them recently has not been pretty or comfortable. Don’t get me wrong; over the years I’ve enjoyed watching them and rooting for them to prevail as a couple against the odds. But now, this, this feels right; sad, needed, but right.

Whenever I sit down to write a review I always re-watch the episode. Sometimes, though not this season, that is painfully hard to do (flashbacks to “All About Men” in season eight). At other times, like last week, I spend the time absorbed in the episode again rather than writing, because it was so good. This week I sat down with a heavy heart. That is until the very first line. It was only during this second viewing of Bend and Break I noticed that Arizona gave away the ending in her very first words. She’s such a spoiler. In describing the components of the ‘triad of death’ Dr Robbins effectively nailed the coffin on her marriage before the episode had even got going...

Uncontrollable bleeding, acidosis, cold, the triad of death - the point of no return. She was not describing fixing a broken leg, or even the difficult decision to amputate one. She was describing trying to save what little life is left at the point where it is almost hopeless. It was never going to be a happy ending and I’m vaguely annoyed with myself that I didn’t see that big fat clue from the opening narrative.

Season eleven of Grey’s Anatomy, so far, seems to be the season of specials. Perhaps post Sandra Oh the writers decided to throw the rulebook away and redesign the show. Perhaps they were feeling nostalgic and wanted the editors to do a bit more work by having them go back and paste past clips? Whatever the reason we were treated to a third concentrated episode, delving deeper into one particular relationship to set up a very different kind of reality for these characters for the majority of the season. It’s working too. Bend and Break, while not as good as last week’s epic season buster Meredith centric feast (..and breathe), was a watchable feature that allowed us to look past the superficial and create some closure on a number of unanswered questions.

I did not enjoy the episode, but then I was not supposed to. It was very good, the writing was truly compelling and honest, it was beautiful drama, but it was not pleasant. The outcome was welcome, though the journey painful, for the characters and the viewers. But maybe that was the point? Maybe the writers meant to make viewing awkward and itchy, not only this week but for the last few? Maybe this was a metaphor for their marriage and the story they were telling?

The marriage I refer to of course is Callie and Arizona’s. In 11.05 we finally got to see behind the closed doors of this struggling relationship and what we found was a car crash. Breaking up this couple after all the difficulty of the past few years was the kindest thing Shonda could do; kindness to the season, to the viewer, to the actors. It now gives us the opportunity to get to know both of these characters as individuals again rather than as a couple. It will make them both more interesting and watchable. It may even make them fun again and in the end it may bring them back together as a couple.

Very quickly into the episode we were introduced to the couple’s therapy sessions and finally some dissection of the issues plaguing their relationship. Both women were irritating throughout and at times intolerable. Callie with her emotional whining self-absorption, Arizona with her self-interested clinical detachment. We saw the worst versions of them and this was deliberate. They were lost, to themselves and in themselves. Through their very different experiences of separation they emerge from the silos, one needy the other free. Arizona’s discovery is that she ‘needs’ Callie but we already knew this. This was her breakthrough in season nine. For her this separation was merely an affirmation of that and through her epic failure at work having the break consolidated that need, but she said nothing about her marriage or imagining life from Callie’s point of view. This is what motivates Callie’s epiphany. The effort of ‘fixing’ is tearing her down. The more Callie heard from Arizona the more she realized that happiness starts with self-love and it is absent. The freedom she felt was the separation from Arizona’s need. It wasn’t from Arizona, for it was clear throughout this episode that these two love each other hard. With grace and love and a commitment to shared parenting Callie tore them apart, for the good of them both. When it came it made complete sense. The only surprise perhaps was that Callie and not Arizona delivered the fatal line. Did you see that coming?

The writing was not wholly satisfactory though. While it is wonderful that Callie laughed during her 30 days and did lots of stuff, those in themselves should be benefits to a marriage not drawbacks. Relationships thrive when we get to have our own separate interests and passions away from couple-dom. This is what worked about Callie’s relationship with Mark. Yes it was problematic because of the parenting storyline, but over all she had her social release, her friendships away from her wife. And did she really do that much in the 30 days? I’ve seen Callie be much more hardcore and bad ass before, even within the marriage. Part of this was functional character linking. Bringing Meredith and Callie together as social partners opens up a new (or renewed from season nine) relationship avenue for the writers to exploit. Which brings me to the second unsatisfactory point – where was Bailey? Callie tells Meredith she has no one to talk to. Really? What happened to Bailey? Saying that, I would not take away from this new tequila twosome at all. Their vagina duologue track was possibly the very best scene to come out of the writer’s room in a very long time. I’m excited to see more of Meredith and Callie together.

Though the marriage may be over I remain of the view that this is an end game couple. Subject to the actors’ own plans and decisions I can see Shondaland taking Callie and Arizona on a long journey to self-love circling back to each other. They may entangle themselves with others, they may even self destruct first but until shown otherwise the writers will eventually keep the faith.
The love, the passion, remains. Though it’s worth remembering that this is Grey’s Anatomy so this is to be expected - Mark/Lexie, Cristina/Owen, Cristina/Burke, Alex/Izzie. The big relationships rarely fail in Grey’s because people just don’t love each other anymore.

Bend and Break did not break me. It energized me to see what the writers have in store for these two. I came away both relieved and excited, ready for the fall out and new adventures.

In case you missed it:

Did you notice a similarity in Callie’s break up speech to that given by Arizona at the airport”
7.07, That’s Me Trying: “You stay here and be happy and I'll go there and be happy”
11.05, Bend and Break: “I should love me, and you should love you, and together we love Sofia...”

What was Arizona wearing?
Callie swigging from a bottle of wine – is that normal?
Arizona has still not said she doesn’t want another child - foreshadow?

Meredith’s musings on Cristina as her true love and the glue in her relationship with Derek – very attuned piece of self awareness almost drowned out by tequila and vaginas.

So tell me...did an iceberg hit your ship?

EDIT: Oh my. I forgot one of my key closing points.
Callie beware. Callie beware. The choice you made may come around to bite you. The fall out of this will be a very angry Arizona. Callie has made this decision and we know that one of Arizona's real issues is that in her eyes Callie makes the decisions for her:
"I regret that you made a decision for me. You make all the choices and every time that I try to make a decision for myself its like you make me feel like I'm the most selfish person in the world."

  1. The iceberg did hit BUT it makes sense that they get some much needed space to focus on themselves. Some things you can't do together. I'm hopeful that we're going to get more focus/POV from Arizona this season since they're not together and than will help us understand her more.

I'm very sad but know it's best and gives Shondaland the opportunity to reset them and keep things interesting for the characters/actresses.

What did you think of the flashback selection and placement in the scenes?

  2. The word 'reset' is interesting. I think that's exactly what Shonda is doing with them. Resetting them.
I thought the flashbacks were a rather cheap way of getting the viewer to buy into the fact they were in therapy to deal with issues built up over years. I ignored them actually.

  4. Interesting that you ignored them, I suspect many viewers have as well. :-)

There has been some further analysis from fans. The moments selected and when the flashes actually occur were purposeful and I believe is intended to give more insight into what the characters are thinking. An example would be the flashes that Arizona specifically has when she gets jealous or the flashes Callie has after seeing her hip patient walking around. These are just a few.

It will be fun to see what Shondaland has in store for both of them. The reset potential is huge because they've effectively closed the door on the baggage that had accumulated with some of the more flawed and overly dramatic stuff written for them over the years.

  5. Perhaps I'm doing myself a disservice by saying I ignored them. I didn't have the time to analyse them and I normally do like a bit of analysis :)
I've just gone back to the Arizona jealousy one and I can see what you mean. All the flashbacks are to do with 'other people'. The audience is told that she's jealous by Callie however so I'm not sure what we learn from it.
    I enjoyed seeing them though.

  6. I've just added a paragraph to the article. Can't believe I forgot this point in the original review!

  7. Well an angry Arizona is a hot one, so I am game. I do think they are resetting and playing long ball this time. There is probably going to be a few failed relationships in between. They have to learn their own faults about and fix them individually. Then maybe there is a chance together. But if Shonda is really taking Grey's beyond season 12 she had to break them up. What other stories are there for a happy married couple, another baby storyline. Yawn. I so look forward to an Arizona's storyline without Callie. I need to know more about her and why she is the way she is.

  8. i think even if shonda is finishing at end season 12 she needed to shake these two up. I'm excited. It's almost as if we have two new characters on the show that are familiar at the same time.

  9. I agree with everything that you wrote. I'm team Arizona all the way. I think that it will be interesting to see where this break up will take Arizona....

  10. While Callie's speech was indeed good it did not tally with what I saw on screen. I did not see someone laughing a lot and doing a lot. I saw someone drinking a lot and fixing one patient. I've seen Callie be awesome - she built cartilage and she's now doing some spectacular work making robotic limbs - while in her relationship with Arizona. She was drinking alcohol in most of her scenes while on the break and the more I think about it the more I am convinced that this is foreshadowing. The conclusion of her speech I thoroughly agree with but I didn't feel the substance through the break. The writing was good but flawed.
Geena Davis' character, while awesomely bitchy, is something of a caricature and I find it fascinating that the writers have yet again introduced a rather 'hard' character against Arizona - remember Stark? Grey's does not do these characters very well, in the end they don't last long and they leave - it's a very 'nice' show - Burke, Hahn, Stark - none of them lasted and they end up the bad guys. I am though really looking forward to the moment when these two characters, Arizona and GD's character (who's name I need to google) have a show down.

Kudos for getting the big fat clue :)

  11. How Callie gets to the realization is very much in character. The point is not the drinking but the journey. She starts with the first morning where she expresses the need for contact with her wife to the very end where she experiences a certain amount of success with the help of Derek. She realizes through Arizona's speeches that they are now at polar opposites and to return to the relationship will suffocate her. She has clarity at this point in time allowed by the realization that she is not alone and has both professional support and a friend in Meredith.
Callie's journey is complete from George at the beginning and now with her breaking the ties that bind her to her co dependance. She even refers to both George and Hahn at the bar.
This sums up in a nutshell the brilliance of the episode...

  12. Your argument makes complete sense, her journey is complete, I get that. I struggle with some of the leap as illustrated through the episode. Both the professional support and the friend in Meredith were evident in season nine.

  13. thanks. I'm going to sit on the fence here. Both of these characters are flawed and now rather toxic for each other. The challenge is that they are very different personalities that it is easier to be sympathetic to one more than the other. Callie is emotional, wears her heart on her sleeve and expresses her feelings large and loud. Arizona is the opposite. She holds everything in, does not process through talking and can compartmentalise her life quite efficiently. This means IMO that sympathy from viewers is often more skewed towards Callie. It wasn't an accident that in the episode Arizona is frustrated that Callie speaks for her, over her. She does, but can you blame her when her partner, Arizona, puts up barriers.

One of the best things about this episode is that both characters were portrayed in a negative light. It was a signal that their marriage is over. But things will move on and the writers will allow both of them to shine. I'm optimistic.

  14. I agree totally with Callie's speech and decision to end her marriage to Arizona not being a reflection of what had been portrayed throughout the episode. I expect that was SR's intent to add to the shock value of that scene. She didn't want the viewers to see it coming. However, I think she overplayed that hand. My reaction wasn't so much shock as "Wait...What?" It seemed more manipulative than anything.

I was optimistic, until yesterday, when I dared to watch the 11x05. For me, it was pretty clear that there's no return for them, Callzona over. I believe the SR, for doing other series (like bright woman who is) is losing the charm when it comes to Grey's Anatomy. So do not believe that the series will have a 12th season, I believe this will be the last, according to the latest events. I did not want it, even when accompanied them from the 1st season, it's sad.

  18. Loved loved loved your review. It's what I've been thinking. They needed a reset to rediscover themselves and ultimately each other. They are end game, imo, but they didn't stand a chance continuing on that same path they were on; it was painful to watch for some time. Callie's speech about being more happy in the 30 (40) days was a little out there, as a couple of drinks, a moment of singing about vagina, and her usual surgical badassery in the OR didn't illustrate an especially happy month for her…in fact, she mentioned to someone that she was having "the worst month." If she had made a clearer point of saying that all of these normal activities were made so much better by not having to come home and worry about walking on eggshells regarding putting their relationship back together and the stress that doing so was adding to her life, it might have been more believable. Lots of holes in the writing as usual, but I agree that this was a necessary split and they will be better for it. CalzonaStrong!

In short, end game for them.

  20. I don;t get the feeling at all that this is the last season and demog ratings are in favour of renewal as well as the fact they have added episodes to season 11. However i do think that 12 will be the last or at least the last for many of the longer term cast members.

Remembering that Jessica Capshaw is the only one that has not yet renewed contract. What makes you think she will leave the series. Think about it !!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. i think arizona going to feel that callie walk away from her and their marriage , one of arizona's biggest fear. And that going to be interesting.
I just hope we can see them having an amazing journey as individuals that bring them back toghether.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Awesome . I agree with you. I hope callie realize that now that she doesnt have arizona anymore . They are still mfeo!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I didn't say she would leave. Assuming JCap signed the standard seven year contract then her contract will expire at the end of season 12 (she joined as a regular in season 6) which brings her in line with the longer cast members. Ramirez signed 7 years in season 3 and has just renewed again for 2 years bringing her in line with the originals. I would assume that KMK's contract is up for renewal at the end of this season as he joined as a regular in season 5.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ps. that doesn't mean of course that they can't leave before or that Shondaland can't dispose of them.

  26. I hope Arizona and Callie never get back together again. I couldn't care less about Callie (in fact, I FF through her scenes when Arizona's not there), but it should be refreshing to see a truly single Arizona who is no longer attached to Callie (except through Sofia who we never see anyway). That's the only story I care about, and really, it has never been done before except for those first 3 Arizona episodes in S5. I'm interested in who Arizona is, because I feel like being with Callie has dragged this character down so much, that she is no longer the strong, independent, brilliant woman we were introduced to years ago.

Of course, given that Shonda has said that this season is Meredith and Callie's journey, I wouldn't expect to get much from Arizona (so what else is new?). Still, the possibility is way more exciting than whatever little Arizona's been given over the past years. And as an Arizona fan, I'm already used to the potential of Arizona's SL being tons more exciting than what actually plays out on screen, lol.
