DC Head Geoff Johns Says DC Movies & TV Shows Form a Multiverse

Thanks to SHIELDNCISArrowfan for the heads up.
The DC model you’ve described stands diametrically opposed to Marvel’s, where all their content exist in the same world. What is it about the separate world idea that benefits your brand?

GJ: Well, Arrow and Flash are the same universe, and we get a lot of great story out of that — especially when we have episodes that cross them over, but that’s also where our superhero universe lives. We look at it as the multiverse. We have our TV universe and our film universe, but they all co-exist. For us, creatively, it’s about allowing everyone to make the best possible product, to tell the best story, to do the best world. Everyone has a vision and you really want to let the visions shine through. I think the characters are iconic enough. I like [Marvel’s Agents of] S.H.I.E.L.D. a lot. I love what Marvel does. I’m a huge fan. It’s just a different approach.

  1. But why are characters off-limit then...

So...since the movie Flash has been cast already, perhaps we can get a 'Flash of Two Worlds' episode in the lead up to Justice League?

  3. A really weird multi-verse where time is all over the place as well then if we have Young Bruce Wayne in Gotham and Older Bruce Wayne in the forthcoming movies..

  5. Don't blame them at all. So many of these heroes' stories feel like they belong in different universes anyway. Green Lantern in Arrow? The Flash in Constantine? Et cetera... Jolly good for Marvel and their universe, just because it's working for them doesn't obligate DC to follow suit. I say this as a bigger fan of Marvel (superheroes only, the Vertigo line is better than the superheroes of regular DC and Marvel combined) and it annoys me that people keep dissing them for it.

  6. If you're talking about character usage in TV and the Movies....There are all kinds of reasons that the licensing contracts may include one character and not another. For example, the copyright lawsuit over Superman, could affect the ability or process of licensing the character to a series or movie. Or it could be that one set of writers or producers have an approach for a show based on Wonder Woman that the people at DC don't like so DC refuses to license the character to them, but another set has an appealing approach for dealing with, say, Plastic Man so those licenses are agreed to. It's all legal stuff.

  7. If this means there's a "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event coming in 2024.....I'm IN!

  8. He's saying they're not connected (other than Arrow and Flash). Thus, it's not the same universe, unlike what Marvel does.
